I love her. I read her bio. She was a sweet and kind person and suffered severe health setbacks that didn't seem to slow her down. Meryl Streep does a great job portraying her.

I agree, thank you. When I heard about her and found her recordings few days ago, they made me feel only deep sadness. I don't know, how is it even possible to laugh at her (or at anyone who wants to sing). And knowledge of all troubles she met made it sadness even deeper. Also one need to remember that she was in age when professional singers finish their careers. No one knows how she sang when she was young and how she could sing more simple pieces. I think she could sound quite well if someone would give her a repertoir that would suit her

I dont think she was aware of it. She gave performances mostly for people she considered to be close friends. She died about a week after giving her first public performance, which was lambasted by the public.
She was rich and got to do whatever she wanted. That's all.

She had so much courage, not just in her performing, but living with the deadly disease she did most of her life.
A person is never cured of that disease. It can come to the surface again, even 20 years later, after the so called. curing of it.

This is so incredible. Thanks for posting. FFJ was not just a bad singer--she was a whole encyclopedia of wildly bad singing--a prodigy of bad taste and ineptitude--and her singing is so hilarious you can listen to it over and over and still be captivated and amazed. Most bad singing is merely sad and dull, but she made you feel like you were watching a fireworks show; it's dazzling in its badness.
It's true. I have her on CD. Only someone with serious training could reach such stratospheric awfulness.
Many years ago I found that wonderful LP of hers and took it home, and my mother and I listened to it and almost fell off the couch, we were laughing so hard. She obviously had a wonderful time putting on her concerts, and her audience had a wonderful time listening and trying not to laugh too openly. She brought joy to many, many music lovers. The only performance I can think of that rivals hers is Peter Ustinov's "Mock Mozart" and "Phony Folklore," and even he is not so sublime! A very bad singer myself, I admire her ability to exist in a reality of her own; I suppose her singing sounded great to her.

As a dancer, I view her as kind of an inspiration though. She looked like she was having the time of her life. Who cares about what people think. Reminding myself of her story helps to take the weight of worry off my shoulders a little bit. It’s just a dance after all.

Florence Foster Jenkins promoted the organization and motivated the creation of social and civic groups that provided services to the military, soldiers returning from WW2, wounded, etc. Her inability to sing as well as she thought was tolerated and fans were not necessarily those of her music, but of her work in this area. She helped raise awareness and serious money for vets. They respected her and her actions. Those who gathered around her admired her desire to help others. Tickers were frequently given to soldiers and paid for by patrons of the arts and she was given access to some of the most respected opera halls in England and the USA.
Yes I guess people did pay to see her. So what has changed? Look at what people pay to see performing today!!............

Did people actually pay for the singing, though? I thought she did her singing to raise money for charity. With the Carnegie Hall concert, I believe she rented the place herself and gave the tickets away, mostly to returning soldiers.

@@zamyrabyrd Hi yes it is true that St Clair Bayfield only got $ 10,000 from her fortune and had to go to court with their love letters as proof to get that. However that was not Florence Foster Jenkins' fault. Her father had disapproved of her marriage to Frank Jenkins and he stipulated in his will that no husband of Florence's should ever inherit his money. If she died childless the money which was in a trust was to be given to her step nephews and step nieces. Her own will seems to have disappeared.
Although Bayfield and Madame Florence had a kind of common law wedding in a hotel it is not sure that she was actually divorced from Jenkins at that time - divorce carried a big stigma for a lady wanting to be included in high society back then. Apparently she always gave people the idea that she had been a widow - even before Jenkins death. This might explain why she kept his surname although she despised the man for what he had done to her.
Cosme McMoon also applied to the court for a legacy and stated that Florence was in love with him , but he got nothing - so much for the codicil before going on stage at Carnegie in the film! Who knows if that ever happened?
Anyway , it is a great film isn't it! She was such a character.

You have got to see the movie. Every reason and every detail is shown and explained so well.
In the end, I don't think it matters that she was a terrible singer, because one way or another she put on a great show and everyone left with a smile on their face!
And isn't that what everyone wants ultimately, to be entertained? I can't imagine anyone ever got bored during her performances! She was a great entertainer.
Let me be the first to express his astonishment that these films exist! A transcendental treat, to see La Jenkins in action. And color footage at the end! If I hadn't seen it myself, I wouldn't have believed it.
I am fairly convinced she was an angel of sorts. What's interesting is her timing's actually pretty decent - it's just the pitching which needs a little more work. But I think this footage shows a sweet person who just didn't give a damn and used her wealth to fulfill her personal passion. And actually many people loved her for who she was and came to her concerts despite the poor pitching and sometimes rough tone. (A small howling dog comes to mind sometimes). When I think of the full belly laugh she gives me I realize how much joy in truth this woman has spread and continues to spread - all really because she had an extraordinary passion for music.
You can check Madame Mari Lyn who is mostly on pitch, but still hilariously bad.
I love her....and I love her determination to be who she is. I am no opera/classical singer; I am a big fan of the genre...and with that being said....I do my opera singing in the shower where only my family and pets can hear....and object...LOL!

I discovered FFJ's records when I was a teenager. I never dreamed I would see actual film footage of her; in color, yet. It is amazing how this relic was discovered and preserved. Now she is a star again on UA-cam. Thank you, Donald!

The fact that we remember a singer who can't sing says a lot about the human condition and the state of music.
Off the top of my head, at roughly the same time (perhaps in their heyday a little earlier): Dame Nellie Melba, Tetrazzini, Lotte Lehman, Lily Pons ... I could name more except I have a terrible memory for names! But I do get your point. She was unique and gave a great deal of joy to those who heard her sing, live or recorded.

I guess that is Cosme McMoon we see at the piano Spencer, as Miss Florence had sacked Edwin MacArthur several years before this. She caught him grinning at the audience while she was singing - so she was aware enough to realise that he was mocking her at least . I think she had a great deal of fun on stage.
The movie reduces the time factor to a month or two as apparently Cosme had been playing for her for 5 or 6 years before the Carnegie Recital. All the best, Andy

People saying she's no singer... The technical aspect of music performance has its purpose, of course, but from where I stand it's far from being essential. Florence inspires me through her joy more than many technically experienced artists whom I find boring. She has a special kind of artistic force that is derived from the courage of being authentic and vulnerable. That's the core aspect of art, and thus, she is an amazing singer. But we suck at appreciating the higher subtitles of the heart because everything has become a joke and we laugh at whatever surrounds us by inertia, especially at the conventionally wrong or broken angles of art.
She just needed Les Dawson on piano, to make it perfection.. Ilove it. I would love to go busking, but am too afraid, I wish I hade her courage.

No. She was ill. Very very ill. She thought she was a brilliant singer and it didn't help that she surrounded herself with people who endorsed her as a singer and praised her 'talent'. To be honest, I really don't care. She loved music and that's what matters to me.

Sad that no footage or recordings exist of her playing piano, she was actually a talented pianist, even played at the White House for Rutherford B. Hayes.
It's amazing that in this old footage the audience seems to react like they did in the movie - meaning laughing at her yet pretending to admire her singing.

Jlo no es cantante precisamente, es una show wumen, y es muy trabajadora y perjeccionista, no ha sido nada fácil y gratis para ella, (aunque no soy su fan para nada, no me gusta su tipo de música, ni como canta, casi no se le oye, pero por lo menos tiene oído y tacto musical, siente la musica), como a esa estúpida ricachona, que daba asco verla y no tenía ni tan siquiera ni una pizca de oído musical, ni ritmo ni nada - era una tortura escucharla - lo has escuchado? What!!!!!! I have virtually every recording, technically good, bad and indifferent. Unless you are well tone deaf, you could never say that, even if she could sing in tune, that she could sing well!! I had read on one of the record sleeves that she flung flowers into the audience, and at one time mistakenly threw the basket! Here, we see her doing it!
