He just failed to see that she was a nice lady who was considerate and even went to the trouble of counting the stupid raisins to show him she honestly believed there were 5,000. He was busy making her wrong (calling her a liar). At the very least he could have made a friend.

She was not a liar, she didn’t come to interfere with him but to bring his “purse” to him that he had left, and she told him she never lied and was right even when she “guessed”. She was humble, she showed emotion without shame, and she went away without a word when he tried to shame her. How can anyone be LESS wrong than she was? You know he didn’t need to as you say, “appreciate what is right about them”, everything was right and NOTHING was wrong. Humans need to know that no matter how out of sorts and hurt, troubled, and mean they get, they are not entitled to see everyone as having at least some faults. Some people actually and truly have no faults, zero. It’s only when we realize these role models in real life that we will stop feeling like we owe it to ourselves and everyone else, AND DESERVE, to be free of fault, wrong, stupidity, selfishness, and hatred. I invite you as I do everyone to take notice and see a RIGHT when it isn’t at all wrong. And better than that to lead your life in this way and encourage others to do so.

She gave back his purse. He left it at the store where he bought the potatoes and the raisins to balance the load. He’s not got all his wits since he could have balanced the potatoes in two 5 kilo bags and not have to buy the raisins at all. Not to mention lighten his load by 10 kilos! She is the store clerk who sold him the goods and that’s why she knew that 10 kilos of chocolate covered raisins is 5,000 pieces. She was nice because she’s always nice and she’s known him for a long time while she watches his mind slip away. He needed his money so she took it to him, but, got caught up in his demetria. She knows the only way to deal with him is to act like he’s sane and go along with him. She smiled because she’s happy she helped him and that he is ok and still kickin. Because she’s his friend. Many friends of the mentally ill and infirm behave in this self sacrificial way.

Well that certainly explains why he thinks he’s American but uses kgs. I’m going to go along with that so I can just enjoy it, & not focus on the fact that his 10 kgs of potatoes wouldn’t last anywhere near as long as his 10 kgs of chocolate covered raisins if he had one of each every day. 👍👍

Reminds of another story where a young man went to visit his grandpa in the nursing home. There was a bowl of peanuts sitting there and as they visited the grandson ate every one of those peanuts. When he was about to leave he apologized to his grandpa for eating all of the peanuts. Grandpa said, "no worries son, since I've lost all of my teeth I just suck all the chocolate off of them".
That made my day..hilarious!!!! Suck the chocolate off of the..lol Nice

This film reminds me of someone in my life who thinks they are the perfect friend.
He will verbally lash out at me at the slightest chance he gets if he thinks I deserve it causing me a lot of unnecessary upset grief.
After watching this film I have decided it’s time to end this so called friendship.
I also had such a profound moment. I was allowed no beliefs that disagreed with her beliefs or she would verbally attach me. Hold her theoretical gun to my face while I counted all the theoretical raisins that proved she was right, only she missed the part where I was offering love.

Share this film with her. Cultivate her to be the kind of friend that you would love. Don’t give up on anyone that could be your friend.
Enduring abuse is not what one should receive from a friend. You should stop him in his tracks when he starts that.

@eyesiepaine9099. There was an atty everyone hated him. I ended up working for him. He kept talking to me like I was stupid so after hours one night I asked him if he thought I was incompetent. He was shocked and said "no". From that point on he spoke to me a like I had a brain. Tell your friend what he has been doing by giving an example of a time he has done it and of he/she does it again you will no longer be his friend. Do not accept or forgive his/her excuses. One chance left.

But, when we point a finger at others, we don't realize there's 3 pointing back at us. It's in the bible, something like, "how well you see the splinter in someone's eye, in spite of the log in your own eye". Js. Best to love thy neighbor, truly. And "have a heart" no one knows when the tables will turn.

The shot of her in the sunlight leaving is poetry.
I noticed that too. Can't put words to it but I sure felt what it means.
And the natural honesty of the old man's thin, wrinkled thighs like stalks from his ratty underwear as he watches her walking away felt stark... it wasn't a necessary component, but its inclusion counts toward such simple, visceral truth about time and reality.
Someone here gave a helpful bkgrd that she was the regular store clerk who knew he was alone and losing his wits. And that she therefore played along with his obsession about blatant liars for lack of any other connection.
This led me to surmise she achieved something more than just returning him his purse. She spent hours with him right there, him half-dressed but full of himself-the social that he needs to knock him out of his mundane and predictable routines. She was the good neighbour with a heart of gold. An unlikely social that got thru to him despite his lack of sociability. Coz she wasn't allowing no half-dressed raisin to spoil her intentional errand 😉
She acted like a fearful, shy, old lady, but as the camera caught her eye on her way back. There was a knowing glint in her eye and a self satisfied look upon her face. She accomplished the task she set out to do. Check on a crotchety neighbor, and give him his purse.
Without being threatening in anyway, as he is old and infirm, and feeble minded. She respects him enough to do it, because she is kind. She allows him to live as he is, while many would interfere. Again she respects his right to live as he pleases.
Beautiful film. Reminds me of someone I knew that had PTSD from fighting in the Vietnam War. I never gave up until he broke. He later became my most kind, wonderful husband.

he’s the raisin and she helped him find himself and that he’s tired of being alone or that it hasn’t been worth it. the raisin. he’s spent 4999 days by himself and now she’s shown him what being alone has gotten him: unfounded skeptical hatred of good kind people.

It breaks my heart that all of those chocolate covered raisins were ruined.
Yes, the raisins were left lying on the dirt ground which turned to mud in the soaking rain, except for the one raisin on a rock taken by a squirrel.

Awesome! I thought the last raisin would drop as he stood up and she would see it too. Maybe I’m just naive. The landscape, the wind especially, seemed like another character- bringing to the fore the old man’s self inflicted isolation. Brilliant! Thank you!🎉🎉🎉

@@rebelliouslogic2705 then does that once again make the woman a liar? I think, rather, the raisin is an offering to the woman. The liar, he said he "hated" . He feeds the squirrel he "hates" the raisin. Perhaps a belated peace offering.
As simple as a fable, and as powerful too. There's a lesson for each of us in both of these characters. Simple is the hardest thing to achieve for an artist. Thank you for this film.
I thought it was neither funny nor sad....I felt nothing but irritation for a foolish old man who acted a jerk when someone tried to show him kindness....

Incredible acting by both the elderly man and woman. Outstanding scenery/setting, directing and photography, too. It would take me too long to speculate upon the moral, meaning and symbology of this story, but it is obviously quite profound. Lost opportunities due to fear, especially fear of change is one thing that comes to mind. :)

Why healing is important, people aren't born bitter, it takes many betrayals, many disappointments and bad fortune, sometimes to people most undeserving. Dont become what hurt you, for you may hurt others, and miss the blessings they bring.
Pretty much sums up the last few years and the entire you-know-what debacle.
So beautiful definition of Art. Allegorical, archetypal. I love the coloqial accent of the man. Astonishing delivery of the words by the actor.
This film is pure genius - the photography, the vast, lonely landscape, the lighting of the interior set & the sunshine striking the woman's face after she closed the gate AND the acting,are just perfection. There's many different ways to interpret this short film. To me the old man has cut himself off from others and lives alone - except for his bitterness. That bitterness and his outlook on life, in such a negative fashion, keeps him always alone.
I'd love to know what was in that drawstring bag - maybe a small inheritance which he was denied until that moment... but it was far too late.

3:22 She didn't lie; she said she was "guessing" there were 5,000 chocolate covered raisins. A guess is an approximation. Because it appeared she was off by only one, she had told the truth; her figure turned out to be an approximation, a guess, and she proved this by underestimating the correct amount by one (which, of course, turned up later). A well-executed film, nonetheless.
I have NO freaking clue what the short is about. She didn't lie, whether she guessed right or not. Later she admits it was a lie by saying "I don't know [why I lied]" It makes absolutely no sense, right? There's comments talking about how much they laughed or cried or... what are they talking about. The short was terrible!
@@tylerharrington4515 i think he was such a bully and so mean that she, a gentle woman who had never lied in her life just allowed him to dictate or narrate the situation. I don't know if she actually accepted it as the truth or just agreed with him because it's easier to do so. Maybe at first she wanted to become friends or unite as a couple, counted the raisins out for him, received his scorn and verbal abuse, just "let it go" and simply agreed with him because at that point she realized, 'hey this guy is a Di%&! I don't Want to be his friend or unite to become a couple. And here's the clincher, she was relieved when he told her to leave. I say this because, did u notice as she walked out from his 'yard' she looked up at the sun or sky or whatever, and smiled. She realized what a crotchety old man he was, she would be better off not befriending him.

to learn how to interpret the "meanings of", in movies I guess there's videos out there that walk thru a book or movie or piece of art.
A Book club, where everyone reads a book, then gathers together and discusses it. A writing class, and of course exposing yourself to new; movies, art, books etc after a while there surely would be new insights and understandings
Thank you! I love this. I’ve been working in longterm care for over 25 years and in my experience most of the time the women are much more crotchety than the men. One way or the other, the elderly are precious and have a lot to teach us. I really appreciate them and what they have to offer. Wisdom and comedy are at the top of the list. I love this population! Age is just a devide. We are taught at a young age to look on older people as something different than the rest of us. When planning goes into a neighbourhood they don't factor in that people age and need different amenities right across the board. Employment, medical,social entertainment,practical/ housing, security/policing. Bring back the concept of community village life type. Countries are obsessed with wealth at the expense of the majority. 5% have, 95 haven't. The gap is criminal. The are the seeds of discontent in countries that never had Revelution. This is because of their government's unwillingness to go against the 5 %. Wealth distribution is key If we're to head of trouble coming our way. ✌️☘️
attempting to formulate a joke using crotchety (great word I haven't heard in ages) with choc raisin buried in the crutch :) Can't quite work one out! Though in terms which sex has a more disagreeable character in later years, you have got me musing. For women our mood can be at the mercy of our hormones... though as a Mum of three boys I can contest I often use the phrase, "control your hormones!' and kick them outside to be physical.
It’s funny about mood and you mentioning “hormones”. I had my last period at 59 and never had any menopause symptoms. Not even one but I do feel that strong female thing going on where I speak up and don’t hold back. I’m not putting up with anyone’s “chit”. lol. If you know what I mean. 😂. Acting, yes, kinda nice. But wasted in this story.
Story of my life. God sends someone with my poke sack that I forgot at the grocery and she is my Angel meant to be with me that I’ve longed for my whole days. And I’m too ignorant, stubborn, clueless to understand and Being a loner and suspicious, I send her away. I wouldn’t be that rude but making her count the raisins confuses me.
He had to prove her wrong and that she wasn't as honest as she said she was. 🤪 Silly

I am 78 years old. Revisiting this and reading you commits I tell you guard your life don’t become hard hearted. God made men to be strong, to defend, to provide and to preserve others and other living things. I did that and know that the world was likely a better place because I was in it but for a short while. I am satisfied with that way of going.

This was an encounter by chance because she probably saw him buy those raisins and returned his purse and probably interested as she knew where he lived. Instead of enjoying this encounter he squandered it by having her count his raisins. In the end he continued his set way. She was a better person from this encounter and he still remained an old fool. Are you set in your ways. Everyday the same thing. Never change so it all remains the same day after day. Just alive but not living.

He was generally starving in every sense of the word....until he realised his mistake. 2 things he did hate, squirrels and liars. By the end of the film the squirrel had a chocolate raisin. She was very kind, honest, etc the opposite to him probably. Life teaches us many lessons no matter what age and situation we find ourselves in. We should never have to prove ourselves and be prepared for
unexpected visitors.
Different and unique - which is great. Loved the shooting location and also enjoyed the end credits with the squirrel and raisin. Thanks for sharing!
There is so much that I loved about this movie! Absolutely the best movie I have seen in a Loooong time!
I see more than one message/lesson/moral in this short film. What I list below is my take, not what I feel the filmmaker meant with the film.
One is that each of us should not be so quick to accuse someone of a wrong. Less we come up with an unjust verdict that could be destructive to the accused and the therefore condemning our Soul.
The 2nd is that we should be careful who we joke around with. Not everyone has the same since of humor as us. I might joke around with my sibling but definitely do not joke around with my parents. There is a place and time for each thing. I know the lady in the film had no bad intention in lighting joking with the man about the raisins in his trousers but she didn't know him that way, so it was best to just tell him why she was there. A few more misspoke syllables from her and she would be dead. Not by the gun so much, but by the man's ill-tempered character.
Last is making a mountain out of a mole hill. Although we come across a vast number of different individuals and situations in life, we need to know that most bothersome situations need to be swept off our shoulders. A car cut you off on the road, does not warrant you following the car to the next red light, getting out of your car, going up to the driver's wind Smashing it in and assaulting the driver. Because now you'r arrested and your bank account will feel a heavy withdrawal. All Because you made the situation something it wasn't.

i used to imagine what contentment I would likely feel if I could be a photographer who specialized in still-life settings, gathering all the perfect antique items and arranging them to take a photograph that would touch the artistic feelings of viewers. This is what your short film is to me...a story of still-life put into motion....words and expressions and perfect location and actors for your story. Very deep. I admire your artistic expression. Lot of wisdom in this movie. Loved it! Stop judging first (the viewers!). We are all a reflection of both the man and the woman. May be we should have a bit of a squirrel in us! We all need a raisin...
A very classy little film, with a super tight script and superb acting. Well done. I used to know a hard up yachtsman who had worked out he could afford to sail all year round, if he only had 1 potato a day. Inevitabley he was known as the one potato sailor.
I particularly thought the change in the facial expression of the old man when he realised there was the 5000th raisin. It was great acting - you could see and feel the penny drop and remorse.
I think the idea in this short film is deeper than that. Let me explain to you how I understood this work:
The old man makes a huge effort to obtain his supply of food and takes it to his home after hardship and effort, and then because of feeling of hatred, he directs his attention to another issue that is not essential in his life.
The gun represents the impulsiveness and excessive enthusiasm that the old man directs towards this secondary issue that is not of real importance in his life.
The woman represents the rational party with the correct point of view, but at the same time, she is weak and unable to prove her point, she is easily distracted from her main case under the other party’s blind enthusiasm for his idea.
In the confrontation, both parties act under the weight of misunderstanding and lack of awareness of the real priorities in their lives.
In the end, both sides lose their main case in the story. The old lady, although she has the right point of view, is distracted from her main case and directs all of her efforts to prove a useless side case.
The old man, driven by his hatred and blind enthusiasm, sacrifices his day's supply of food (the most important issue) for the sake of a victory in a case of no real importance, and discovers the truth of his misunderstanding too late.

Proof squirrels drive people crazy!
The old man reminds me of how we feel when we fight to survive and society has pushed us aside it causes us to lose the ability to trust. The old woman spent her life trying to prove herself to everyone that she doesn't know how to stand up for herself.
I think it's a little gem.

This is a beautiful precious jewel of a film. It makes one think.
Whenthe lady gave him back his purse atthe end, the squirrel in my head ran fast in its wheel, and found out the Lady KNEW he had bought 5000 raisiins, because he had bought'em at HER store, manifestly.
I doubt he bought raisins by the number...rather by weight.
Moral of the story: Don't eat a potato and one chocolate covered raisin for supper every day of your life.

the moral of the story could be that the truth lies within his own self. He wasn't convinced with 99.99 of all that she had reached. also there is a funny twist at the end where he pulled the last peanuts out of his b***, perhaps she was too polite to mention or tell! ( Old lady : I am not a liar, I never lied my whole entire life !! ).
Sometimes instead of thinking someone is a liar we should give them the benefit of the doubt. 🙂
A man is driving around a bend in one direction. Another car is coming towards him in the other direction from around the bend. The person in the other car leans out and yells, "PIG." The man in the first car gets really angry, says how dare you. Rounds the corner and runs into a pig.

Wow!!😳 Not a single comment about the 4 other guest appearances whose presences are mysteriously revealed in the background of the countryside at precisely 4:00. While these quiet, yet profoundly illuminated characters had no dialogue, their simple, and yet visually profound presence offered a glimpse of the purest form of science fiction/horror/fantasy that one could ever hope to dissect from such a quaint, sharp, and witty little movie, or short film as it were. The biggest question I have for the filmmaker is whether or not these characters were included in the original screenplay or not. Because they do not appear to be CGI or special effects, and yet they still made the Final Cut which I am assuming was intentional. This adds all the more intrigue as to why they would have revealed themselves in the first place, assuming their presence was genuinely natural. That is to say by the nature of their appearance, and their relationship to either the characters in the story or the characters creating the film. In either case, whether they were intentionally written into the script or accidentally caught on video, my interpretation of what a moral or morals of this story could be remains the same. And that would be, redemption, forgiveness, and charity. Attributes which are never too far out of reach for anyone to achieve as it would seem is the case for the old man. Not even for someone with this sort of abrasive, yet profoundly sad attitude. Also, considering each one of our own free wills, combined with our ability (or inability) to interpret various ideas, words, and meanings into our own personal truths, does not necessarily mean they are accepted or agreed upon by everyone else that might have gained a completely different idea about a certain word(s), or idea. Including a particular meaning(s) based on each of our own personal life experiences, and beliefs. Or the actual formal definition of that word as outlined by a certain rule of that language, or the agreed upon definition by a certain organization or group of individuals selected to define (or indoctrinate depending on the group) all of the different words of whichever language is being utilized for spellcasting I mean spelling. Such is the lesson we might all benefit from learning… that with each individual experience, including various aspects of all the different languages, such as what we each believe to be the truth about anything or anyone my friends… is not always necessarily the correct truth, or the truth agreed upon by the majority. Nor is it always the truth understood by the individuals who share their opinions about what they believe to be truth in the first place! So, with that… am I telling the truth, or lying when I am misinformed about a definition, or a series of incorrect explanations about history for example? There is probably a better question to be asked, but regardless of the question here also lies another curious lesson about profound ignorance, if you would please. Thank you for the thought provoking pulp, including a-non fictional set of ideas and comments, regardless of all the inherent ignorance exemplified by the comments, and critics.🙂

A beautiful example on the awakening to the knowledge that his loneliness was killing him.
She was such a christ-like figure kneeling at his feet counting each rainsin in the rain. The light that broke through the clouds and rain and her smile at rhe end were synnolic of her healing that one man.
What he does with the gift of the one raisin is up to him.
