In the early 80s the studio didn't offer much in the way of places for poor singers to hide. Mr Almond suffered a lot of opprobrium for his struggles to hit the notes. I think he later re-sang some of Soft Cell's hits for a compilation, unless I'm mistaken.
Marc and soft cell meant so much to me as I became a teenager in the early 80s. His tales of life in the gloom and dark corners opened up a whole new world. As a straight boy I never had a moment of thinking gay guys, flamboyant guys were different to me and to be treated as ‘other’. thanks to Marc in particular for being on ToTp at a critical time in my development. He never gets the right recognition for his songwriting though. This song and bedsitter are stunning works.

I met Marc in 1991 at my friend's get together in Soho after their civil ceremony. Steve Strange sat one side of me Marc the other. I was a huge fan of both. We went for a Chinese. Mind blown! Both extremely charming and friendly.
He still sounds as lovely as ever. What a fantastic performer! There's a video of Marc and Bronski Beat singing live at Montreaux kicking about and oh my goodness, him and Jimmy sound absolutely amazing together. No autotune, just two outstanding voices. I'm always banging on about how the singers in the 80s were so much better but seriously, check it out if you need a little uplift!
Saw him in 99-ish at Nottm Concert Hall, and he walked up and down the aisles singing this, shaking hands with the audience. He genuinely loves the people who come to see him.
I just Experienced this at Union Chapel London. The Concert with Msrc was Awesome but at the end WOW a Suprise , he not only got us Singing to Crowd with Say Hello , wave Goodbye. He come out and. Shake hands with crowd to , and Orchestrate crowd briefly .was incredible. Adore Marc Almond. 😀❤️🌻🌠❤️🎵

I was around when this came out in the premise of Soft cell and loved it then...to have watched many a performance over the years by Marc almond especially on Jules Holland it has proven without doubt what a clean,crisp,strong singer Marc is... Myself I love people who are passionate about there art because they produce songs that once listened to you hum or sing snippets when out/going to work🤣 This song has all...a story in musical form and most of all and best.. Marc singing it with passion and the emotions of someone who is relating the song from past experience Iv listen to many good bands and like red hot chilli..under the bridge...give depth and meaning to the singer and to ourselves Fantastic version of this song.. thank you from a 1980's child growing up listening/still listening to your fantastic vocals/music👍
My favourite Marc Almond Tune, it hasn't got old, in fact it gets better with age. A truly timeless beautifully crafted song you could imagine the great American Crooners like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Elvis, Willie Nelson, Bing Crosby and even Johnny Cash could have covered because of the emotional range in Marc's singing and songwriting puts this in the company of all I mentioned, effortlessly. It's that good.
I have been lucky to have Seen him a few times - always a top professional- I met him in Camden market the Sunday after Tainted love got to no 1 - we were all buying 2nd hand black suits- the stall was next to the electric ballroom, really down to earth guy. - he was wearing a long black leather coat - I remember thinking the coat cost more than all the suits - what a time to be alive. You could see a different band every night in any London venue / Camden was an amazing melting pot
This was always one of my favourites from my youth. It seems to open a window to the trials of a doomed relationship, the raw honesty makes you believe it.
This is such a great song, and it’s sung so beautifully and emotionally , the arrangement is perfect. I always feel like I’ve listened to a story with Marc’s songs.they paint such a picture. Wonderful!
It's almost an a cappella, Jools's piano is pretty minimal. Terrific song this, Marc shows what a great singer he is, he's done a few versions of this song on Jool's Holland's show and each time he's been top class.
