👍👌👏 To say this MAN does justice to the Charles Aznavour's masterpiece is an understatement. There are very few songs that have such an impact in fighting bigotry and intolerance, and very few who can go on stage and deliver their message. BRAVO to Marc Almond for being "man enough" and more than "enough" to do so! 👍👌👏
A beautiful version - earlier this week I was overjoyed to see Marc in concert at The Brighton Dome - Charles Aznavour a hero for my cause - written 1972 in support of his gay friends who at that time lived hidden lives - which is still the situation right now in so many parts of the world - to this day Russia refuses to permit Charles to perform as he has ALWAYS insisted this song can be performed.
I have now rethought my juvenile criticism of Marc Almond. Sometimes it's good to be wrong cause you can go from being judgmental to being more open-minded. Thank you, Marc...
Touching comment, this song was originally written and sung by French Charles Aznavour, Mark borrowed many Aznavours songs to release a wonderful thought provoking album...been hooked on Almond since " à lover s spurned" greetings from France without the translator
I first heard this sung by the late Charles Aznavour in the late 70's, just listened again today because of his passing. Listing to Marc Almond (first time I ever heard the name) But this guy put the same true feeling and Mr. Azanavour but he made it his own. Thank you for your beautiful rendition>
I remember seeing Marc perform at London Pride back in the 90’s and there was a technical problem with his backing track. So instead of stopping, he told the sound guys to sort it out while he sang the next song 'a cappella’. It was the moment I realised what a truly gifted artist he is. The clarity of his voice was so powerful I found myself crying because of its beauty. I consider myself very lucky to have seen him perform a number of times over the years, I hope to see him again in the future.
indeed, jealous! lol. as a gay man myself (living in Orlando, Florida), i loved this song the very first time i heard it. We need the message in this song and from other artists like Jimmy Somerville now more than ever. i am shocked at the hatred around us all nowadays. i am ashamed of fellow humans, and intolerance. i hate to admit i am intolerant of others as well. i cannot accept a group of religious people (muslims) who does not accept us. shame on me for that. coexistance be damned. the Pulse nightclub massacre happened 10 miles from where i sit right now. I at one time lived 2 blocks from there. i have been there numerous times, my partner and i know the staff who worked there. we knew several of the now deceased victims. life is very short. thanks Marc Almond for being such an amazing performer and human, and for spreading a message of love and acceptance! thanks for sharing this great song.
Marc helps me through my darkest moments, (I am not gay, but I have always felt on the outside looking in). When I listen to Marc I never feel alone, it's okay to be who you are.
A flawless rendition of a truly heart-wrenching song. I dare you to listen to this and not have a lump in your throat at its conclusion. STUNNING lyrics!
OUTSTANDING performance. He's somehow speaking to the souls not only of the people for whom this amazing song is about. I'm a straight woman and this has made me tear up since I was 15. He's truly unbelievable.
Oh wait a minute Marc! This song is so beautiful.. But you introduce it with. "...To be different in the face of adversity"... I am not gay but I also have differences... You are absolutely right, society likes to put a label on every thing, . And if there is something a little bit wrong, you are rapidly isolated. If we could stop to put labels on whatever this man or this woman are, there would not be so many solitaire people. Oh, Marc you are so underrated in UK but you brought great compositors there and you make it very well. Thank you.
1) Marc Almond has one of the most amazing voices I have ever heard. 2) Reminds me of telling my parents, "You found me out. Yes, I'm in love with a woman" and being told it was either deprogramming or disownment (I chose the latter, of course). 3) Utter tearjerker. And may future generations not have to go through such woe. Our love may dare speak its name, now, which is an improvement over before, but we have a long way to go.
I heard this song for the first time last night. The words, and story behind it is brilliant. People should be able to live there lives, as they please without people being hostile towards them.
Everytime I hear Marc Almond I am taken back to 1982, in the middle of an ice cold winter, locked in the basement with only 1 small westward facing window, where late in the afternoon the almost-setting sun would reach the window and be my only company, save my Non-Stop-Erotic-Cabaret Album and that small sliver of daylight. Endless days would pass like this until I realized the basement door wasn't locked. Ahh Marc Almond, how I love thee
This is a beautiful rendition of the song. I enjoyed it very much. I prefer Liza's slower version though, she sings it with a lot of passion. Thank the gods we have such a beacon of hope and strength standing with the gay community
My mother was a christian and she loved everyone unconditionally, as her religion taught her. Careful who you point fingers at, you're just as guilty as those you criticize. Its funny that the people who call others Haters seem to have the most hate in their heart. Judge Not works both ways. There are bad specimens in every group, unfortunately they get the most attention, dont let them sour your whole image. Love you.
Marc Almond is just such a sublime singer over so many decades!! HE is still a fantastic singer and entertainer beyond belief!! Would love to follow him on tour, BUT sickness benefit does not allow !!
I want to thank artistes like Marc Almond especially and Jimmy sommerville, tom robinson and bronski beat for bring there in their times. Being much older no one sang about their gay life, this song by Marc is absolutely fantastic. Thank you Marc.
Sorry to other comments praising Marc's rendition of this great track but Charles Aznavour he is Not! I like Marc and his music, this is at best a 3/10, NOBODY can replicate Aznavour because the emotion he shows in his music is from living in war torn France/Europe during Hitlers European Tour of 1939-1945 and he has his own style thats impossible to replicate. RIP Charles Aznavour. Respec sir.

as a gay guy ,living in Ireland.in the 21st century .there is still bigots and ignorant ppl around ,i didnt choose to be gay .i was born this way this is a haunting song but its soo true
Bravo. Came here looking for the Aznavour original. This is also a very good performance. The question transcends “sexual orientation” - What makes a man a man?. “Tell me if you can?”..
There is no certain scientific evidence I know of that gives a clear answer, however there are many many interesting studies and articles out there, why don't you treat yourself to a bit of Google.
Very beautiful song, it was originally sang by Charles Aznavour, a famous French-Armenian singer. UA-cam him, his version is interesting as well. This song is originally in French.
I'm straight, but love this song a lot. Marc brought it to the new heights.
Charles Aznavour was straight as well...that makes the song so incredibly strong.
Who can sing songs of Charles Aznavour or Jacques Brel, 2 giants ? Mr Almond, another big one. Great !

My mum would sing the Charles Aznavour song to me when I was young, honestly she knew but kept my secret close , Thank Goodness ❤️
@@StevieTiller-ze5yf Very moving. Mums like yours are all about ever reaching love.
I am totally obsessed with this song when sung by Charles Aznavour , this version by Marc Almond is very good as well.
Once again, the French lyrics are really special, stronger, stricking in straight forward short descriptive.
Impressive storytelling through lyrics and amazing performance
I want to cry when I hear that song
A very beautiful song

i've been a fan of marc's for over 30 years! I hope you discover more of his work, and his wonderful voice x
I was at his concert in Moscow in 1993. I will never forget him. He was so beautiful, so sincere.
Marc Almond did a great interpretation of the song by Charles Aznavour.
I remember seeing Marc perform at London Pride back in the 90’s and there was a technical problem with his backing track. Lucky You. Back in the early ‘80’s in NYC I waited on him at David’s Potbelly Cafe in the West Village. He’s a LEGEND!!!
I was lucky enough to be in the audience for this performance. One of my top 10.
I am so jealous myself... Marc Almond is one of the most rare artists, he is incomparable.

It's good, but isn't the one from the Union Chapel in 2000 even better? It is in my opinion.
Aznavour's lyrics is breathtaking and incredibly deep. and this interpretation of the song is also great
this song and his voice make me cry . so deep and beautiful .Thank u Marc Almond
a great talent. A nice person and a real man who isn't scared to voice his feelings as this song proves
So sad that Aznavour left us.

Lyrics to What Makes A Man A Man
My mum and I we live alone
A great apartment is our home
In Fairhome Towers
I have to keep me company
Two dogs, a cat, a parakeet
Some plants and flowers
I help my mother with the chores
I wash, she dries, I do the floors
We work together
I shop and cook and sew a bit
Though mum does too I must admit
I do it better
At night I work in a strange bar
Impersonating every star
I'm quite deceiving
The customers come in with doubt
And wonder what I'm all about
But leave believing
I do a very special show
Where I am nude from head to toe
After stripteasing
Each night the men look so surprised
I change my sex before their eyes
Tell me if you can
What makes a man a man
At 3 o'clock or so I meet
With friends to have a bite to eat
And conversation
We love to empty out our hearts
With every subject from the arts
To liberation
We love to pull apart someone
And spread some gossip just for fun
Or start a rumour
We let our hair down, so to speak
And mock ourselves with tongue-in-cheek
And inside humour
So many times we have to pay
For having fun and being gay
It's not amusing
There's always those that spoil our games
By finding fault and calling names
Always accusing
They draw attention to themselves
At the expense of someone else
It's so confusing
Yet they make fun of how I talk
And imitate the way I walk
Tell me if you can
What makes a man a man
My masquerade comes to an end
And I go home to bed again
Alone and friendless
I close my eyes, I think of him
I fantasise what might have been
My dreams are endless
We love each other but it seems
The love is only in my dreams
It's so one sided
But in this life I must confess
The search for love and hapiness
Is unrequited
I ask myself what I have got
Of what I am and what I'm not
What have I given
The answers come from those who make
The rules that some of us must break
Just to keep living
I know my life is not a crime
I'm just a victim of my time
I stand defenceless
Nobody has the right to be
The judge of what is right for me
Tell me if you can
What make a man a man
Tell me if you can
Tell me if you can
Tell me if you can
What makes a man a man

as a gay guy ,living in Ireland.in the 21st century .there is still bigots and ignorant ppl around ,i didnt choose to be gay .i was born this way
this is a haunting song but its soo true
I was there
Bravo. Came here looking for the Aznavour original. This is also a very good performance. The question transcends “sexual orientation” - What makes a man a man?. “Tell me if you can?”..
the original song : Aznavour comme ils disent
NOBODY handles a song as masterfully as marc. he is impossible to copy. he is the best.
Not bad, but the original version by Charles Aznavour is outstanding.
Such a beautiful man ❤
Keeping the song alive in other renditions
A Great interpretation, no doubt. Very hard and very sentimental at the same time.
Sympathique reprise du " GRAND CHARLES " !
just amazing, so many intense questions all rolled up. This has always been a favorite song of mine
La si può cantare bene,ma l'eccellenza è solo di Aznavour
beautiful x
