I love Strax. He is the one person who can say they will melt you with acid, obliterate you through time and space, crush your bones, basically threaten you in ANY way, hell, even knock you out with a rolled up stack of paper, and just smile and laugh about it afterwards.
Always liked the Sontarans back in the 1970's. I'm glad the new generation found a use for them.

Plus, let's be realistic; he's a Sontaran. He comes from a technoarchy of sorts, he used to literally do everything with machines, and being cloned and raised by machines, didn't even have parents. I'd be pretty stupid too if I came from a world in which every damn thing is done by tech and was then thrust into a world with few machines.
He's basically Zoidberg from Futurama. He also don't know that much about human anatomy despite being a doctor. It's suppose to be because alien anatomy is quite different and maybe there are some species where the mouth actually does contain eyes. I'd be pretty confused to if I had to learn the anatomy of not only my own race but also every gawd damn species in the entire fucking universe.
Every Sontaran's ambition is to die gloriously in battle, so they have no NEED of medical professionals. That's why Strax is a nurse, and why being a nurse is a punishment for a Sontaran. If a Sontaran dies or is injured, they just clone more.
The problem with the joke is that he has exactly the same facial features and generic body type of a human. So confusing her eye for her mouth makes absolutely no sense just on a fundamental level.

it's strangely satisfying, and never gets old.
Well Strax's humor works best when he's still actually competent, however his competence is at odds with the role is trying to fill.
It's such a cheap and easy bit but it works so perfectly for the sake of humor.
In Dungeons & Dragon terms, where a Strength 24 character (so +7 to damage) throws a roll of paper (1 pt damage base):
"You knocked my character unconscious!"
"It is just bruise damage, your character will be fine in a couple of hours."

He doesn't (correctly) recognize the difference between human males and females (most of the time), so it could be gay male porn, normal porn, or even lesbian porn.
Correction, he doesn't correctly recognize the difference between ANY males and females because his race is entirely male he usually incorrectly assumes that everyone else is also male. Except for the first Doctor who he actually thought was a woman due to his long hair. I guess that means he is at least familiar with the stereotype that men usually have short hair and women usually have long hair.

Well Clara has never shown any interest in other women but she is very clearly attracted to men so they most likely were men. Though it is possible that at least one of the people "playing sport" was actually her having an orgy with multiple guys all at once. As we've established Strax incorrectly thinks Clara is also male and people usually fantasies about themselves and other people chances are she was getting gang banged by three cocks at the same time... maybe... Still really don't know for sure but I highly doubt lesbian or bi is in there... That would be like Bill having a sexual fantasy about men when she clearly only likes girls.
At least one of Clara's splinters, Oswin, hooked up with a girl once. Seeing as her splinters all share her core personality traits, that means there is the possibility that Clara has also had similar attractions, at least at some point. She was probably thinking of her hooking up with guys... but we don't know.
If I recall, the medical device Strax uses was actually designed by a group of fans and then was built to be used in the show. That's why we got the scene with Strax giving Clara a medical checkup.
Three kids won a Competition on Blue Peter each of the team had a device designed by one of the winners for the character they liked best...
I love how he repeats "melt him with acid" in the exact same gleeful way...gesture included!

I went back and watched this story again last night. Pure brilliance. You'll always have your naysayers, but I think Peter Capaldi's incarnation of the Doctor has been pretty damn strong. I do not care for what some say about the writing and Clara, the stories were fantastic, except for Sleep, that was the weakest story in my opinion. Peter, like the rest, will be greatly missed
The Phantom I agree. Capaldi is like the alter ego of Smith. More of a grumpy character with an outward appearance of an arrogant character. Of course, he isn't, but he lets off that vibe. He also kinda turned the doctor into a rockstar.

Necroing a bit. There was never anything wrong imo with Capaldi's doctor. A lot of the problems he had was in some of the material just... not delivering as punchy as Tennant's/Smith's run. IMO his delivery is probably top notch when he's got decent stuff to work with.
Capaldi didn't get as many great written episodes, but he was a brilliant Doctor. Matt Smith was another all time great. If Ecclestone had stuck around he'd be an all time great as well.
I'm not a huge fan of Tennant, he was far too user friendly. Although Donna was magnificent, probably the best companion of the modern era.

Personally, Donna was rude and foolish, basically a modern Karen. Martha Jones and Clara Oswald were the only companions bright enough to actually be the Doctor's equal (in intelligence) in the modern sagas.
Matt Smith and Eccelston are great doctors, but Capaldi fell flat on a lot of options. His companions after Oswald were really bad, bringing a cringe campy feel to the show. For the first time, the Doctor and his Companions all seemed equally stupid. It's not Capaldi's fault - it's the writers; but damn they ruined his chance. Then we went to Jodie and it kept going downhill.
