They do. The reason they're not always called over is because the signs and declarations and instructions -- if they fill them out in English (they're all available in their language (Australia has an insane amount of varying languages available to make sure everyone can truly understand), they're fine to converse. Alas, when they're caught out, they suddenly don't understand a lick of English.

On all incoming flights the declaration cards are available in many languages and with significant information about border control, customs, including food…. I have to laugh at that Chinese student, honestly so sneaky and lying. He says his parents will mail him the money when he enrolls. He can enrol online via Internet from his home country. Then he says he doesn’t have enough money and he needs to get more and he doesn’t even know how much money he needs, and if he was truly enrolling in a course, he would know exactly what it cost! I’m sorry, if I was a border security guard all these people would be sent home who were lying like this! Not to mention, how can they study anything that is taught in English when they don’t speak enough English and need an interpreter at the airport? Honestly, I wouldn’t be allowing anyone in on a student visa that did not speak the language the course was going to be taught in… and that’s just ridiculous

It's because we are too soft - we rarely issue fines and then the amount of the fine is laughable - the fine should equal $ amount of goods confiscated e.g.value of 3000 cigarettes PLUS a fine for having broken the law - in the case of illegal organic material (seeds / food) the fine should represent the potential damage to the environment - as someone has commented here, noxious seeds can cost the country into the billions. AND if the smuggler is not a citizen they should immediately be denied entry - if a citizen, a mandatory prison sentence. Either the importation of noxious organic items is damaging to the environment or it is not.

@@michaelhmiles there is a huge value in ancient seeds and seeds for plants and vegetables that you would have to otherwise have to import for a lot of $$$. The reason why a lot of them are banned to be cultivated other than by specialized and certified growers. Is because if they ever spread, they might completely take over or at least disrupt the environment they are not native to. So...some people think they can be careful enough and safe $$$, bring seeds and grow them. The risks outweighs the benefit, but especially Chinese are very selfish and have little to no regard for others or the environment. That's my personal experience.

That security agent who stopped Mr Nicotea-n, is totally inept. The man REPEATEDLY goes fishing around in his luggage, takes a phone call, reaches back in & all he has to do is ignore her passive pleading.
She might be pleasant, she might be intelligent, well-informed & a joy to be around - but she seems to lack the deliberate nature you need when dealing with people like Mr Nicotea-n. The moment he picked up his phone & answered it is when she should have called for security - and not that wiry translator, but someone who isn't afraid to restrain someone. Of COURSE, he won't take you seriously, he's been picking away at his luggage while you search it & all he got was a "sir, please don't".

This is why they kept doing it. It's pretty useless to me and a complete waste of time. They might as well don't bother doing these checks. The laws needs to be more tough and penalties should be in the tens of thousands or imprisonment. That will be the only deterrent that will stop these people from doing what they are still doing.

We have the same thing happening in Canada. If you are coming from a Muslim country enter as a student and then bring over the rest of your family, extended or otherwise. It doesn’t matter if you attend your classes or not, no one ever checks. Didn’t graduate, that doesn’t matter either, once again it is never checked. These people don’t speak English or even try to learn. They don’t have a job and no prospects for getting one. They arrive here knowing nothing about how Canadian live and have decided they don’t care about how we live, they will continuing living the way that they have been living just in a different country. Our government has now implemented a plan that states if you hire a Muslim person to work for your company, they (our government) will pay 75 percent of their salary. Unfortunately if you are from the EU, UK, Australia or New Zealand you are SOL. So right now a Canadian student born here, educated here can’t get a job because the government isn’t willing to pay 75 percent of their salary. Qualified or not, if you can learn on the job you are hired. Where by the university or college graduate who has the qualifications loses out to someone who knows nothing. I used to think I was so lucky to have been born in Canada, educated in Canada and until I retired I had a well paid position. That position has now been filled by someone new to our country who speaks little to no English. They know nothing about the job or what the job entails. I have been asked to come back and train this woman to which I replied an adamant no. She can read the job description manual that I had worked on for more than 10 years. The manual was constantly being updated, changed, job duties changed, or modified or deleted all together. Working on this manual there was always something to add or something to delete. Well guess what, she can barely speak English and she can’t read it at all. Our government let in 1,000,000 Muslims in 2023 of which the majority were uneducated, too old to work, contribute nothing to our tax base and become a drain on our medical system without contributing one cent. I could go on and on and on, but I won’t because it is not fair to the hard working, English speaking Muslims who I have met. They are just as Canadian as I am and hate what our country has become.

Depending on your situation (I went there as a single guy, no one with me), you might get approached by airport security asking for details on where you're going and for how long. Have your passport ready. Have your itinerary ready (if you don't know what that is, Google it, and then make one). Don't just show up at Sydney Airport and think you're going on a random adventure. Australian officials don't like random. lol

The weird thing with the Korean ‘student’, is that a certificate 4 in Australia does not take 4 years. A cert 4 is below any university course; it is more like a bridging certificate, and can (easily) be completed in under 18 months even at part time engagement.
