Winter tires do not work on icy sloped roads. Salt does, or sand.
@@CasperEspresso salt doesn't work under 10 degrees. It's been below 0.
Actually @@CasperEspressothey do work IF you have proper winter tires = Nordic non-studded or studded ones. I have Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5's in my VW ID.3 and 0 problems during this winter. Previously drove 2 winters with Hakkapeliitta R3's and those worked good too.

Haha!
I hear anything about ice I stop
I stopped my big truck in Batesville,MS about 60 miles south of Memphis. After watching this video I thank the LORD I did.🙏🏻
Smart man!
Stay safe!
Good idea waiting it out. Better to get it there in one piece
Be safe out there
I'm in Memphis right now I shut down yesterday hopefully in a few hours it's better I got load pick up at 9 headed to Houston back home
Can't overestimate enough how truckers are appreciated for what they do specially in this kind of weather.
Ya especially the bobtail on my way home without headlights on , texting and swerving into oncoming traffic. Truckers are idiots
Like blocking highway on-ramps because they forgot to chain up???
Thanks truckers, we appreciate ya for...the traffic jams?
My heart goes out to them, our country depends on them. They are some skilled drivers!
@newenglandcoast7121 I agree. There are douchebiscuits in every profession, but without truckers we'd all be starving and naked corpses without caskets.
@@angelbulldog4934 so where's my Amazon package ?
Dispatchers aren’t driving, there comes a time to park your truck! Been there done that!
Yup i park if its snowing bab tell them to reschedule for next day
Man that part… I just shut down today… dispatch was trying to call me. Told them to message me what they needed to say that way I can have it documented. I’ll go straight to OSHA and Dept of Labor if Crete Carrier wants to play games. I’m on my way out the industry, you guys be safe.
Exactly my thoughts. Been driving for 8yrs now and it's insane the amount of drivers trying to be superman just to get the load there to the delivery or picking up. It's not worth your life
Yup and 2day was certainly it
I began my day in Memphis, and drove all the way to Nashville, where it became so treacherous that I finally got off the road and got a hotel room over 300 miles from my destination. First time I’ve ever done that in 44 years of driving!
Thank you to all the truck drivers who risk driving in these awful conditions. You guys keep us fed and warm.
Thank You. You're Welcome.
You're welcome. And thank you for the acknowledgement. We don't get it very often.
everyone contributes , it is true the truckers have been through a maelstrom over the last 30 years. meanwhile ... never forget the Canada truckers rally ... now, it is the farmers in Europe. ... sigh ...
Thank you unfortunately many don't care. Shippers, Brokers, and receivers all don't care. Nor does the Dot 😂
AND, if you ever ride in an 18 Wheeler from TX to Canada, you will see just how many truly stupid people there are. You have to be stupid to jump a piece of junk Hyundai directly in the path of a behemoth, especially after the Blizzard hit. It happened a LOT, but the old couple that took me along were so patient and skilled, they just shook it off (while I spent the first 12 hours hiding in the giant bed-lol). God bless all good truckers!
A big hi-five for the air-drone pilot for well describing this iced road curve. Super surveillance w/the up close shootings. Thks for the vid.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you to all truck drivers, emergency vehicles & workers, tow drivers & anyone who has to travel on dangerous road conditions.
Umm, you're welcome, I guess?
Do I get a medal, or at least a cookie?
Glad I got off the road after 15yrs just couldn't take it anymore

I'm thankful for the truck drivers who know enough to stop when conditions go beyond their skills, equipment, and experience. I'm tired of dealing with trucks going down the highway at 10MPH (and the accidents these cause) or "parking" in the ditches and medians or flying down the highway making themselves a hazard for every other vehicle.
The drone operator (camera) did an excellent job.
Thank you!
@@WxChasing What kind of drone is it?
@@ben-fg3fp A dji drone of some sort most likely.
I can't believe that this would not be the first place salt or sand would be dumped. I really feel for these people. My heart was beating fast during the semi incident. Poor guy.
Tennessee doesn't have much of that stuff man💁♂️
I'd rather get stuck than ruin my car.
In my neck of the woods, they pre-treated the highways with salt spray.
Southern States rarely have freezing weather so they don’t budget for salt or deicer etc etc.
@@XPRoller if they had had plenty of it they would be using it man.
This is what happens when employers THREATEN employees to go to work in dangerous weather conditions. Then when you die, they hire someone else by the end of the week 💯
Really crystal clear drone footage. Like being there. 👍
Thanks!
Along with being clear it was very good flying. Almost like a movie view LOL. I live in the area and not only was it snowing hard the wind was very strong that day too.
The pickup truck getting stuck was the best. The blue car with winter tires drove right on by, weird how that works!
The pickup truck it can go anywhere. I hope that people see the sarcasm in this comment, and not that I think pickup trucks can go anywhere.
It's because they didn't get 4 wheel drive. Why? I'll never understand.
Right!? That clown had no clue lol
I grew up in Memphis in the late 60's and early 70's. Has an ice storm every winter. Great memories sledding down those iced up streets!
I lived in northern Arkansas for a few winters and forget about any salt or sanding. Minimal plowing even on major roads. Schools would be closed for days with just a few inches on the ground. I actually put studded snow tires on my rear wheel driven car and was amazed how well I got through it all.
Even just snow tires themselves are a massive improvement over all season tires, let alone over summer tires.
I live in Connecticut, so we do have proper winter support. This leaves lots of people being OK with leaving all season tires on all year. For the most part this is fine, so long as you wait for the plow trucks. Even then, every single person I know who has gotten a GOOD set of winter tires has been amazed at how much better they are. For all types of cars and light trucks, 2wd, 4wd and awd.
On the other hand, I have seen people get cheap winter tires that were worse than good all seasons in the snow. Then form an opinion that winter tires are not worth it. When they should have learned to never cheap out on your tires.
I had studded snows on my '71 olds back in the day. I was invincible with those.
Smart advise 👍🤗
Plus the weight of those big old cars of the “rolling steel” days, heavy as all get out helped with traction. Anyone who drives a pickup with no weight over the rear axle is asking for trouble.
@@patroberts5449Agreed. the idea of driving a pickup in that weather with no weight in back? Come on.
I haven’t left my house in now six days. I’ve never been so happy I had stocked up supplies along the year. Every time I went to the store I got an extra cans of chili and extra cans of cat food. I knew others that had to be out didn’t need the extra traffic! Bless everyone who had to be and got out and helped!
For those that don't know, the cloverleaf ramp is at the intersection of Crump Boulevard and I-55 As Crump goes west It becomes I-55 North and crosses the "Old" river bridge that opened in 1949.
This cloverleaf feeds I-55 north traffic onto the westbound bridge. Notice that it currently has two-way traffic on it. They are also routing southbound traffic on this loop from traffic eastbound on crump from the bridge onto southbound I-55 . They are rebuilding this interchange to get rid of the cloverloops and connect I--55 directly to the bridge.. This interchange was built in the mid 1960s and has been a pain for a long time. It is supposed to be finished in early 2025. (Observing this from South Florida where it is 75 degrees)
It has consistently been one of the dumbest sections of interstate in the country. Baton Rouge river crossing on I-10 is the only thing standing in the way of #1 for that Memphis.
@@jmit3491
They are planning a new six lane bridge for I-55 now. It will be to the south of the current bridge. It is likely three or four years out to begin construction.
The current I-55 bridge is NOT dilapidated at all. Its only problem is that it is only four lanes and no shoulders. The I-40 bridge is only 50 years old and is in good shape. It had a defect that was discovered in 2021. It was fully repaired and reopened in about three months. There might be another bridge built north of the I-40 bridge at same point.
l@@jmit3491
Re-read my reply The I-40 Bridge had a structural defect that was in one of the 900 foot section support beams over the river channel. It had been there since construction in 1972. It started cracking about four years before it was discovered but was missed by inspectors. It was fully repaired in about three months in 2021.
I've shot across this old steel monster every Turkey Day and Christmas for the last 26 years, headed back home (Little Rock) to see my family form Atlanta. It is a narrow one!@@swinde
@@tima.478
The next river crossing south is at Helena/West Helena, Arkansas and it is two lane bridge and even narrower. The next crossing north is near Dyersburg, TN on I-155 and it is a modern bridge that has four lanes. It connects Tennessee to Missouri.
So sorry for all these truck drivers out there in these horrible conditions, trying to make a living for their families . 🙏🙏
You and me both.
Our deliveries are going to be late.
17 1/2 years of CDL driving and NEVER had to be pulled out of a ditch or off the side of a road.
Had they gone slow and kept one side off the pavement where the grass and gravel was, they would have been fine.
But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Companies don't want to teach drivers how to drive in this kind of weather.
@@overyonderjustapiece I agree. My daughter-in-law has been driving for about 12 years and has never been pulled out of a ditch. She is a very cautious driver. But then, she is also an owner/operator.
@@overyonderjustapiece I drove for many years and you are totally correct about where they should have been driving. Off the side of the road to keep the wheels, on one side of the truck, in the dirt, grass or gravel will keep them from sliding. They will gain some traction and stability. Best to call dispatch and tell them you are parking when you get to the next pullover spot.
This is almost as good as watching a boat ramp on a Saturday 😂
LOL especially with the newbie drivers that can't back a trailer up. Waste the whole day trying to get the boat wet.
great comment ! don't know if you picked that " out of thin air " or you actually visit boat ramps on Saturday ...
I really feel for those guys in the semi-trucks. It's hard enough to make a living out there without losing time on the ice.
@dammitbobby283damn right I’m from Colorado sitting in Arkansas cause my loads got canceled with 2 sets of chains ready to go
Fmcsa and dot allow us adverse weather driving which gives us 2 more hours on our clocks to be able to get through days like this or we park the truck my dad always said “if they wanted it today they’ll be really glad when I show up with it tomorrow” 😂

If you have to put chains on... you've done failed. You should never have to put chains on. You're essentially saying you are willing to gamble with your truck and life. Cold weather only causes a minor reduction of flying time, depending on the temperature.
The milld clear conditions shown here are perfect for a drone camera.

What weather? It was calm with a light snowfall.

I am from Memphis, but presently I am living in Phoenix, AZ. :) I love the snow, but not the ice! Lived in Flagstaff, AZ and also St. Paul, MN, so I know what's it's like to drive in the snow. I really enjoyed the video, especially, when the drone took us down Beale Street, I recognized everything. It was good to actually see what's going on in my hometown, even though I am so glad to be where I am at the present. Thanks to the videographer who even considered Memphis as one of your projects! (smile) And to say to my fellow neighbors & people; HAND IN THERE GUYS, THERE WILL BE BETTER DAYS!!!
The downtown is so much more pleasant with no vehicle traffic.
I think everywhere is more pleasant under such circumstances. ;)
Everyone always thinks they can do it ! Not me . I'm stayin home
This video shows it! They cannot even drive 2 feet yet they relentlessly try and try again, only to get stuck 1 foot down the line. What is the goal here, other than to smash your car? Why do they continue to attempt to drive when they clearly have tires that cannot work in these conditions, near miss after near miss? Each and every one of them is stuck and each of them refuses to accept it. Driving culture has done stark raving mad.
Gotta keep your momentum up in conditions like this. Have to find the sweet spot that your speed will carry you through but not so fast that you lose steering contol.
Excellent drone video. Everyone should wait it out until roads are safe to drive.
Watching these vehicles struggle to move on the icy highway is truly nerve-wracking! Massive trucks seem to lose control, spinning sideways, while other vehicles crawl at a snail's pace. This is one of those situations where driving skills and extreme caution are absolutely crucial. Harsh weather like this really puts even the bravest drivers to the test!
I don't hate winter, but I seem to like it better when it's not around.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I say the same thing about my ex wife.
Как вы правы,я тоже ненавижу зиму
Thing for the weather terrified to remember is that we in the northern states (North Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan) don't have these problems, even thought the snow and ice are worse and more often, because we have good forecasting of bad weather, and plenty of winter weather dedicated trucks, vast amounts of ice melting compound, and equipment to deal with this before it makes a serious problem for people who have to travel for work. In Tennessee, they don't expect it and don't have anything to deal with it.
I can't believe they didn't plow and salt that I-55 interchange. Those ramps are a tight curve with a big slope to the center.
We don't use that car-destroying salt down here like the North does. We normally use sand. But this is so uncommon that we just don't have enough sand trucks to get around to the outlying areas.
@@JWimpy The salt doesn't destroy the cars. it's the failure to clean the cars every spring that does.
I'm in the out scort of Kingsport TN no salt on the roads just snow n ice I only drive my rusty F-150 4x4 drive my nice car in nice weather
Can't believe the service truck didn't have some sand in buckets in the back for emergency, you also can carry some kitty litter or some bleach to pour on your tires
They don't have that in Memphis. It's not worth paying for the infrastructure when this happens at most once or twice a year
You don't want to get stranded in Memphis.
The cold weather is just one reason, it's Memphis is the other.
no one is outside thats for sure
Right! I heard there were people trying to loot the amazon truck that jackknifed and was stuck on an icy side street

Winter always comes as such a "surprise"... And then possibly on the road with summer tires? Where are the city's gritting vehicles? As a German who knows winter (ice, snow, slush and incompetent drivers), I had a great time watching this. Thank you for the video
That footage @ 13:45! So freakin awesome. Hollywood couldn't have done it better. What a perspective. It was a privilege to watch this. Hope all those truckers reached their destinations safe and sound.
Here's a helpful driving hint. If you find yourself on an icy road like this, instead of trying to drive with both wheels on the hardtop, put one tire in the grass and one on the road. The grass will give you much better traction.
^^^THISSSSS!!!!!
Not the grass... the little bit of sandy/gravely ruff stuff between pavement and the grass. Also sometimes less throttle is more. I'm a northern Albertan... I ride my motorcycle in snow worse than this video.. ok.. not a lot, but typically first snow I'm out there as I rode to work, it snowed while I was there and need to get home
Ok
We had a little snow yesterday that quickly turned to ice at stop signs and intersections. Cars struggled and a guy in a puckup truck with a plow smashed into a bmw in front of him while trying to stop for a red light. A Volkswagon Golf GTI was struggling horribly in front if me. A the red light he slid, but managed to stop and then his car slid completely sideways into the curb. He managed to get through the light and was spinning wildly and zigzagging. Luckily it was a four lane road and I saw an opening to get around him when he was sliding away from the lane I was in. I went quickly before he had time to zig back into my lane and accelerated smoothly and swifted up the curved hill. I got the heck off the main roads and stuck to side streets after seeing the cluster there.
My car isn't anything great just a Mazda cx 30 awd, but I put some bluzzak tires on in in december and I was glad to have them.
Interesting. I own a VW Golf turbo diesel and my little car drives on ice like it has chains on the tires! It's a bit confusing to me, but I drove for hours during our ice storms in 21 & 23 & rarely slid or spun. I did mild hills, up & down, without any problem. I have manual transmission & front wheel drive & have been told that has much to do with good handling on ice. It caught my attention the GTI having issues, bet it was an automatic.
@@crooked-halo I'm sure it was mostly down to bad tires, as I have a co-worker that drives one all winter. I wish I had a dash cam to show the struggle though, the poor guy had little to no control. All I wanted to do was get well away from him. He might have even had performance Summer tires for all I know, but he was spinning them up really bad. He wasn't the only one struggling, but he was the one struggling the most.
@@crooked-halo Come to think of it I am sure it was his tires because when he was completely stopped at the light the car just slid completely sideways into the curb. Other cars were sliding, but he was the only one whose car completely went sideways like a crab does.
@@Wigglythegreat2 When our ice storm happened my tires were almost new, so I'm sure that helped. They're just all-season, but also 17" wide so that also helps, but the GTI probably had 17" also. But yeah, no tread and you're not going to grab ice. Golfs are low to the ground, which helps on ice and the GTI and mine share the same, high-performance suspension.
Reminds me of winter in Minnesota, saw a semi years ago on a loop like this tipped over on it's side, scary stuff and a stark reminder to be extremely patient when following them on icy roads.

Going to be cold as heck in SC but at least it isn't icy/ snowy. Y'all be safe out there.
One good thing about being retired.... I can just sit here and watch UA-cam videos until all the roads are cleared and salted before I need to go anywheres. There's coffee, bread, meat and milk in the fridge, so I can just sit here and wait for all the crazy weather to be gone before heading out to get groceries....
YES, that's exactly me. No need to be on the road if bad weather is projected. I got everything at home. But I do feel for truckers though...
@@mathisnotforthefaintofheart I'm still laughing because instead of purchasing summer tires and then studded winter tires on steel rims, I asked the Dealership how much for the most expensive, softest riding, most quiet riding tire I can purchase and he said, " You got $1,500 dollars? ... I said " Yep" ... I can't believe how smoother my car now rides, so being retired even saves on tires....PS: NEVER purchase Chinese tires for your car ... EVER. . . I'll never do that again. In the South, salting roads is few & far between; even though we get snow & ice storms every winter. They don't budget or train for winter weather.

People, probably, don't have winter tires there. Stay strong. Good luck on the road.
Nobody is prepared for any of this besides food and maybe generators. It also fell as tiny flakes and compacted to ice basically instantly.
Very few in the South ever use chains because this doesn't happen except on very rare occasions. Spiked winter tires are illegal in most of the South. They destroy the roads. Chains are illegal on dry roads. So most people just stay home and let it pass.
@@Spolt_main yeah. icy roads are awful. But winter tires are from 1st of November to 1st of April absolute must in northern countries. Memphis is so to the south that they probably did not hear about tires change. Yeah, looks scary how they slide sidewise.

It amazes me how most people don't seem to know this, and all,or almost all cars have had it for over 20 years,I think.
If you go normal speed you’ll lose control and slide.

I am a Trucker and have driven for over 35 years. This storm was real bad and the roads were an ice arena with no traction. Great job with both photography and editing. Sorry for the troubles experienced by all drivers, but the resulting footage beats many a major-studio suspense effort.
Thank you!
I don't know why they wouldn't just get their passenger tires on the gravel shoulder.
And just drive around the corner
I was thinking the same thing. That’s how I do it if I get in ice.
Exactly what I was thinking. I walk on grass when it's icy, too. Fell on ice too many times! Ouch!!
It's easy to say when you're out there in a panic trying to stay on the road...... logic doesn't always come through...
It's ALL ice, The grass is iced, the gravel, EVERYTHING. maybe this doesn't happen where you live, but this is freezing rain and creates a sheet of ice. That turn is practically impossible to make. Just a sheet of ice. Temps in the zeros.
@@starkeymorgan4142 we do actually all of it up here in Minnesota. I just park my truck if it’s Icy out on the road.
nice video
Thanks
Awesome video especially the drone footage
Glad you enjoyed it
That's why I left CB on all the time! It was invaluable for info on backups and weather conditions!
The rear wheel drive pickup with the empty bed was the one for me. Hey Tennessee people, sometimes you have to turn around and go backwards. That turns your car into a front wheel drive.
I can tell they know how to drive in the weather but seems like the road is missing some pre-salt. That would of combat that initial glaze of thin ice sheet. That Mercedes van went through and said “hold my beer”😂.
That's straight ice. Nothing to do with "skills". Physics are a thing.
2:25 This is a new form of drifting... with the tail swinging towards the inside of the turn.
Outstanding drone footage. Drones have added an amazing perspective to our every day lives.
Thank you! I take a lot of pride in my drone work.
Those drivers really need a kitty litters. 🤣 lol !!!!
Drone footage is amazing - right on top of some of these - very nice!!!! I *NEVER* understood buying a pickup WITHOUT 4x4 AWD!!!! I know in the South you "MIGHT" not need as much but if you have to haul anything, have a farm, go on dirt / mud roads, or for even THIS exact reason! It's NOT that much more to just get the 4x4 option and have total peace of mind!!!!! 🏁🏁🏁🏁
Glad you like them!
I hope you all drive safe and get home safely!
I hate winter, can't do anything about it though, so we try and deal! Wouldn't chains help here??
imagine having a big ol heavy truck that wasn't 4wd
Amazing footage.
Thank you!
Drone views are the best! Thank you.
Glad you like them!
