    The tools! Reminds me of my late father, and his reloading bench, press, books, magazines. He was an avid deer hunter, was a crack shot, and alwayshad more tools to get, and knew where to get them.

    ***This is a really old video, but I feel that an update is needed to clear up some confusion***
    First, this video was never intended to show the BEST tools to start doing any type of watch work. As its been titled for the past 4+years, this is for BEGINNERS, who may need some general idea of what type of tools are used and realistically will most likely be interested in affordable options. These are the type of tools I used when I first started tinkering with watches ( no more than $50 dollar Seikos and of course not doing any type of work for clients ), and slowly over the years, have upgraded to higher quality versions. I believe in learning with cheaper tools, figuring out if you actually want to continue doing this type of work, then after confirming your interest, purchasing the best quality tools that you can afford.
    The work I do for client watches are NOT done with $2 tweezers, a $15 crystal press, $7 caseback opener or any tool thats most likely shown in this video ( except for the very useful rodico ). If theres any doubt for some reason, please view any of my recent watch build videos to see the type of tools I use and have invested in for client commissions. I don't find the need to have a video for "experts" or "expert watch tools" because anyone that invested in this work will already know what the quality tools are and where to get them.
    If someone is looking to just work on one watch and never again, it doesn't seem reasonable to spend $1000+ on a single crystal press, $900 for a caseback opener, $60 for a single tweezer, etc. But if you are working on multiple watches with no intent to stop anytime soon, then yes obviously you will want to go for the quality tools because it will increase efficiency and minimize the risk of causing damage ( which I believe is also a non-negotiable if you are providing services to customers, but hey that also a factor as to why some people charge more than others right ). This isn't to say that you can't produce quality work with cheaper tools, it just takes longer and requires more care because you are handicapped by a crap tool(s).
    Now if someone with no experience working on watches wanted to work on a $2000 watch, for whatever reason like a simple strap change, then I also don't think it makes sense to use a $2 spring bar tool. Save that $2 and put it towards the $5-$10 it costs to have a professional to do it for you with his/her $100+ springbar tool ( yes such a thing really does exist because I and many others have the $150+ bergeon 7825), who ( hopefully ) will not scratch your watch in the process.
    TLDR
    1. This is a video to show beginners some of the tools that are generally used for watch work and the affordable versions....since a beginner will most likely not want to spend thousands on tools.
    2. I do not use these affordable tools when working on client watches. Please view any of my recent watch build videos to see my equipment.
    3. Quality watchmaking tools are expensive and I wish I didn't want to buy every single one of them because my tool addiction is only growing worse and worse 🙃🙃🙃🙃

    Started out changing batteries then modding to simple stuff like adjusting the regulator has gotten me a lot of free stuff from Friends and Family.Nobody wants to pop or unscrew case backs,change straps or batteries.It’s also VERY relaxing to just mod for an hr or 2.

    Great video.. Ask around your town if anyone is interested to give a shop tour, meet and greet gathering or need helper/apprentice? Work in their shop for awhile. If you are lucky enough, you will find the right person that will show you a real trade tools and help you understand that trade... This will help you with many different kinds choices to come.

    19:50 So for old watches can I use a crystal press? Is crystal lift and crystal press interchangeable in their application?As a beginner can I just use crystal press for everything? As of now I am going to start with cheap Timex watches crystal replacement then giving my Seiko 5 a sapphire dome crystal love ;) After which I might be taking my dad's old watches from the storage to fix them which might need crystal replacement. Nothing replaces education. Quality tools (not cheaply made or materials) once a craftsman uses superior tools you will never go back to cheap materials or tools again.
    If you can, sacrifice to try getting excepted at a local Horology school.
    Self taught is all many have, but if you can get a tutor your well on your way to the craft. Horology is a dying art. And should be preserved.

    Very nice watch tool explanation for budding watchmakers and watch collector enthusiast. I’m always surprised how many long term watch collector guys don’t even own a band tool or a basic screwdriver set. I get that your comfort zone may vary but having to run to a watchmaker or jeweler every time you need something simple gets old. I have about the same tool set as you. I also have invested in a cheap ultrasonic cleaner which really has come in handy, not just for watch stuff but other hobbies. I will say that I much prefer the press type case back removers like the LG case back removal tool. I mainly work on Rolex and the press type is less prone slipping. I’ve had a slip with the handheld type your using. That was definitely not cool :(

      Thank you. The entire purpose of the video was to inspire more people to get into watch modifying and to take the initiative. These tools are not even for the aspiring watch maker / modifying but rather something or a few that every watch collectors should have as you mentioned. They prove to be extremely useful for this hobby especially because some issues not necessarily should be brought to the watch maker. They can be easily fixed with some tools and practice. I do have an ultrasonic cleaner as well but did not mention it, d'oh. Of course the case back removers with the fixed movement case and rotating handle is the best tool for the job but they are also quite expensive especially if you get the burgeon one. Something to upgrade in the future! Thanks for watching.

    I have extremely dry hands, and these cots/gloves are a necessity and it is amazing to use them. The amount of times small stuff slipped through my fingers, getting lost, bent or broken due to too much pressure to hold on to them when other people seemed to have no issues at all were too numerous to mention!
    If you are like me, you will be cursing and cheering because of the handicap nature gave you and the solution your fellow men devised for you. These hand hating moments will be behind you for ever
    Added bonus is the absence of finger prints... compared to the mental health these cots are offering, finger prints are merely an afterthought 😉

    Yet another informative and fascinating video of yours. At the time of making this which was a couple of years ago by the looks of it you had only been doing this for a few months. Can I ask Braden how to do all of this please? Since my mother passed recently I have had lots of time on my hands and I would love to develop a new hobby. Your assistance and help would be very much appreciated. As stated I have already asked you on another video if you would do some mods for me on a couple of seiko, looking forward to hearing as soon as possible

    Great video, I'm trying to buy the tools I need to give watchmaking. Did you mention an oiler? Maybe I missed it. That's a really important tool right? Do you need to oil every time you take a piece out and put it back? Like if I dismantle a watch and try to put it back together, I'll need to oil it, right?

    • @LumeShot
      @LumeShot  5 років тому

      If the movement is being disassembled definitely need a variety of oils for the jewels. However, if it just a simple disassembly, gasket grease will suffice! I dit not include it in the video, my apologies.

    Hey man I just discovered your channel I’ve been enjoying all your content!! do you know how to replace a nh36 day date wheel ? Do you have a tutorial or know where i can see one? Im replacing to a black day date wheel and putting one from a 7s26. That Way it aligns with the date window on my skx007.

    • @LumeShot
      @LumeShot  6 років тому +1

      Hey Joseph! Thanks for the kind words. I actually converted my 7s26 movement to a NH36. I did a video about that watch here ua-cam.com/video/XA-yleTuFqA/v-deo.html I was thinking about doing a video on it but currently I don't have a movement or watch to show the process. If I get an order in to commission one, I'll be sure to record the process and make a tutorial. However in short, to switch the date wheels to make it align up you have to remove the movement from the case, remove the hands and dial to expose the inner workings of the movement. Then what holds the day wheel ( not date ) is a small washer looking clip that looks like a C. You have to remove that little C clip to allow the day wheel to be lifted off the canon pinion. Be careful though for the C clip because it is extremely thin and fragile. Since its malleable, bending it or having a portion of it stick up farther than the other sides will cause it to scratch against the date wheel which could affect its performance and worse not let it work at all. I had to make a tool to lift off the clip which is shown on the video ( the screw drivers that were grinded extremely thinly ) so they could fit underneath the clip to be lifted off similar to how hand lifts are used. Hope this helps!

    this video suprises me. Those cheap tools are made with really low quality steel. I have never understood why some people would use $20 tools on a $2,000 watch. The difference between a cheap pin bar tool for example and a Bergeonone is chalk and cheese.
