I just did my first ever hands installation, watched this vid 3 times beforehand, and I'm amazed! It worked! I didn't have the putty, so I used masking tape to pick up the hands, took a couple of tries for each hand but I just went slowly, calmly, and again, sloooooowly, and suddenly it was done! Thanks so much!
That play dough idea was amazing!!!!!! I always scratch my hands while I put them back it!!!!! This time I used play dough and it turned out easy and clean! I really appreciate your effort for making such a great video! Thanks
Henry M. For sure. Hand setting is the most nerve wrecking part. Too much pressure then you have touching hands. Too little, then theyre not on well enough to stay. Practice and patience is the only way!
I’ve just put my first build together (a vk63 chrono) and I don’t think I used the correct ends of my hands pusher. This resulted in a damaged tachometer hand (the large second hand). Live and learn, replacement hands on order. Weirdly, all other hands (including the subdials) fitted with relative ease. Rodico is a life saver!
Thank you for the great content! It's REALLY helpful for beginners like myself! Question... Retrospectively, do you think it's mandatory to use a movement holder (the brass mount that can hold the movement) to install hands? I'm not planning on doing the operation many times and was wondering if I can get away (and don't damage the bottom of the movement) with just placing the movement on a soft piece of leather or cloth (like you did in this video). Thanks for the help!
Excellent video, was attempting to put the second hand back on a rolex sub but was worried I would mess it up. Feel confident I can do it now without doing any damage.
I'll be doing a GMT quartz movement replacement Ronda 515-24H. I'm wondering if the 24 hour hand should be calibrated when installed on the new movement. Normal function is independent of the other hand settings. When setting the GMT I turn the crown counter clockwise in the first position. I follow you how to synchronize the hands to make sure they are in tune with the midnight date change. Thanks!
Looks like I’m not the first to be here 😂 running into an issue with hands touching and still have never gotten the second hand on. Trying not to give up.
Man thanks for doing these. I'm a total newb, and to complete my 1st Franken build, I'm installing gen hands. Nervous as hell but excited to (patiently!) do it
Great video! I just realized my first and it helped a lot! I still have one question though : when I install the seconds hand it stays stuck to the minutes hand when I wind the crown, does it mean I applied too much pressure or not enough?
Is better when movment is not wound? I think when movment is wound, second hand is always moving so you can not set so precise at 12 o clock. And minute hand will move a little too.
How do you know which is the correct size die for each hand? There seems to be almost no difference in the size of the holes on the various dies? thanks
No No No No No, the voice in my head is telling me to attempt the hand removal, aaggghhhhh, I've only just attempted the crystal change. Excellent video, I'm sure I'll be back to view it again 😂
@@LumeShot help!!! My fossil ch3045 watch crown turns smoothly and works until my hour hand moves an hour from its previous position (12-1, etc). Then it starts clicking and nothing moves. If I turn it back it's the reverse and stops the hour hands and the crown starts clicking like it's being stopped...
Very nice what do you charge for the hand replacement service? I have a seiko 7006-7120 where the second hand fell off and is floating around in the face the hour and minute hand are still working fine ! And face of dial have 2 smudges that could be removed!
I wish I watched this first lol I accidently pushed the hour hand in so much, when adjusting the time, the seiko S and e started to lift off the dial lol its fixed now, but it took hours to get it back to how it was.
Hi this is quite late, but I was just wondering, after doing all this whenever my day (ie monday to tuesday) changes, my hour hands get stuck for a while before it starts to move again after some time. Do you possibly know what might be causing this issue? Thanks :)
I really struggle with the second hand… the rest is cake but things always go to hell once the second hand gets installed… I end up bending it trying to get it aligned right. I have a magnification light that I use as well as I have loops but I just can’t seem to get it aligned well.
Help!!! My watchband is not moving when I turn the crown! The crown starts clicking after the hour hand is 1 hour from its original position. The crowns click is like something is stopping it. Before the click it runs smooth.
When I tried this my minute and second hand move together when turning the crown. Do you know why? They aren't bent and catching on one another either it just looks like they are on solid piece
That means that the second hand isn’t properly in the center of the pinion. Just take a tooth pick to remove it and center it better. It’s a bit harder to do with higher set hands, but it can take a few tries before getting it in right
I have a watch where the hour hand and the second hand are attached but the minute hands spins around. I guess I need to remove the second hand to fix this?
I’ve seen somebody post on another video saying that installing the hands while on midnight will break the day/date complication. I don’t see how you could install the hands in any other position without it being misaligned, could you clarify that for me??
If you know where the hands should be prior to removing (take a picture to help remember) then you can reinstall at any position that doesn't conflict with whatever tools you're using to get them on. It also helps to work on a non-moving movement unless you're just very quick! Regarding the cheap Seiko auto movement, it already takes "forever" for the date/day change to occur. From the factory, it starts changing at midnight but doesn't completely finish until 3am or so, since it'll first go through the alternate day language. So if you put new hands on, and discover the cycle begins changing at around 11pm or doesn't complete the change until around 4am ... you're not actually too far off from "ideal."
I've built myself a few watches now, the problem I have with this one is when the crown is pulled out, the seconds hand doesn't stop. No matter what position the crown is in it doesn't stop.
they cant shange together at the same time, its how the movement is build...its better to figure it so you put the hands changing everything between hours you wouldnt normally watch it (like 3-5 in the morning)
Pro tip, the dial protectors suck ass on a watch with raised indexes, since they will catch and bend the hands upwards. That was a $50 dollar mistake. Use a ziplock bag to remove the hands like he did in his other videos.
Yup, but it wouldnt be as precise as setting it to 12 after removing it. The movement might continue to run after taking off the hands, which could put it to 12:01, 12:02, etc. depending on how long you take to set the hands after removing them.
I tried doing this on my Seiko5 last week and ended up miserably, it was my first time though, I think pressed too much and the press tool I have sucks, it is like yours but the white tips are screwed and not pushed and they are not sitting flat and the whole thing is shit quality. A top quality hands press will cost a lot, anyway, I will try fix the watch later, but how can i get the lens you put around your head? can you get me a link for buying it?
Hi Lume Shot or Anyone, Can I use a Hand Remover Lifter Presto Plunger Puller to JUST remove a seconds hand? Thanks for your videos. They are a huge service to mod community.
Hey! Thanks for the compliment! It should be possible to remove just the seconds hand with the presto lift, but you should be careful not to touch the minute hand underneath since it could result in scratches.
Those press tools are trash. The plastic tips are press fit instead of screwed on, which means it it's a bitch to remove them in order to switch the size.
When pushing in any of the hands how much pressure is needed and do you feel it sit with a click? I'm about to start my first build and it will a Willard. Any help and prayers welcomed.

Did my first mod. Thanks for the tips. Rodico saved my butt! 2 years later your vids are still helping people. Appreciate it Eric!
That play dough idea was amazing!!!!!! I always scratch my hands while I put them back it!!!!! This time I used play dough and it turned out easy and clean! I really appreciate your effort for making such a great video! Thanks
It's actually called Rodico which is like a play-doh like material haha
a LOT of patience!!! that is an understatement. that seconds hand installation is tricky as all hell. I have a bent second hand to prove it! lol
Henry M. For sure. Hand setting is the most nerve wrecking part. Too much pressure then you have touching hands. Too little, then theyre not on well enough to stay. Practice and patience is the only way!
Meanwhile i have the same problem with the minutes hand 😅😂 learn and practice!

Big thanks, I was struggling with the seconds hand but the tac-it tip really helped.
Had the same problem!

Great vid, I’m just about to do my first hands mod in a week or two and this video was excellent to explain, thanks.
Man thanks for doing these. I'm a total newb, and to complete my 1st Franken build, I'm installing gen hands. Nervous as hell but excited to (patiently!) do it

Yup. Correct. Did you fix it?
obviously too much
Great video. I used my tiny security hex bit as a press tool and was able to put my minute hand back on correctly. Thanks again!
Good idea, i was wondering what i could bodge up to put a second hand, on a watch i just got, that has the hand floating round.
Great vid - and I really like that dial. Which model is it?
It looks like snk 805--those brushed body and nylon strap ones.
Is better when movment is not wound? I think when movment is wound, second hand is always moving so you can not set so precise at 12 o clock. And minute hand will move a little too.
So could blue tack be used in place of the stuff you used?
instead of that magnifying thing could you just use your phone camera with the macro function?
Fantastic tutorial my friend. Thank you very much, very helpful.
😎👌
How do you know which is the correct size die for each hand? There seems to be almost no difference in the size of the holes on the various dies? thanks
No No No No No, the voice in my head is telling me to attempt the hand removal, aaggghhhhh, I've only just attempted the crystal change. Excellent video, I'm sure I'll be back to view it again 😂
Haha ! It'll be a great learning experience. Only going to cost you a few table flips and hair pulls.

Thank you I've just made my copy seiko 031 and I'm so happy with it .hope it sells as i want to make more. I've caught the bug now. :)
Thank you , I’ll give it ago once the hands pusher arrives, thank you
Very nice what do you charge for the hand replacement service? I have a seiko 7006-7120 where the second hand fell off and is floating around in the face the hour and minute hand are still working fine ! And face of dial have 2 smudges that could be removed!

Here in 2024. You just saved my ass! Thank you!
one question, how do you know how much to push down?
What if your not upgrading the movement. How can you get the seconds hand to match the minute hand rollover?
Not necessary because the minutes hand can be adjusted independent of the seconds hand.
This was a great video! That second hand has been giving me fits. And, using the putty was inspired!
OK. Thank you. I have a question.
If I do this for the first time after just seeing this video, will I success???
if ur careful n lucky
Ended up repeatedly bending then breaking two second hands.. :(
With I could find someone to install my handset for me. Do you do custom work?
All I can say is aurrrrrrrrrrrrr for f--ck sake
What type of movement is that ?
Hi this is quite late, but I was just wondering, after doing all this whenever my day (ie monday to tuesday) changes, my hour hands get stuck for a while before it starts to move again after some time. Do you possibly know what might be causing this issue?
Thanks :)
Thanks for this video. I have rebuild several quartz wall clocks but I was wandering how you install hands in the correct position.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
Is that nh35 movement ?
Are you using the same die for both (hour and minutes) hands?
How if hands pointer isnt fit on movement ?
I think my pointer circle is small
I have a 5 where the dail is rotating when it is shaken, thus becoming misaligned...how do I fix this?
I really struggle with the second hand… the rest is cake but things always go to hell once the second hand gets installed… I end up bending it trying to get it aligned right. I have a magnification light that I use as well as I have loops but I just can’t seem to get it aligned well.

Will my watch be silent if I remove the second hand from the quartz movement?
Where did u get those tweezers? looks chunky and I like it
When I tried this my minute and second hand move together when turning the crown. Do you know why? They aren't bent and catching on one another either it just looks like they are on solid piece

Great video with helpful information. Thanks
what is that sticky material you are using to put hands back on? is it rodicale,? What is the correct spelling? Thanks
Very well explained providing clear instructions and motivation for the amateur DIY
I have a watch where the hour hand and the second hand are attached but the minute hands spins around. I guess I need to remove the second hand to fix this?
How did you fix it?
How do you know what size hands you need?
I wish my installation went this smooth. Broke the minutes and seconds hand. neither would go in at all no matter what I did.
I’ve seen somebody post on another video saying that installing the hands while on midnight will break the day/date complication. I don’t see how you could install the hands in any other position without it being misaligned, could you clarify that for me??

Hey my first Seiko.
Excellent. Thanks for the clarification.
Thanks for your video. Very good information and very well done.
having tried with a roamer watch, reckion I need to leave these jobs to the experts!
I've built myself a few watches now, the problem I have with this one is when the crown is pulled out, the seconds hand doesn't stop. No matter what position the crown is in it doesn't stop.
I've watched lots of pros and they don't worry about it being stopped. They just press it on quickly and let it go.
Good video, help me a lot. Thanks
fantastic video
What about movements with hacking? How do you confirm the placement of the seconds hand at 12oclock?
Great video, thanks for the knowledge.
It doesn't matter, since you can move the hour and minutes hand independently of the seconds hand.
great stuff thanks!
Where did you get the loop from? The one that you wrap around your head.?
From eBay! Watch making loupe or jewelers loupe should show some results.
Thanks so much ☺
Good video thanks man p
By far, this video is one of the most informative horology related videos out on youtube! Lume Shot, this video was the money shot( all over my face)
very good tutorial!
is there any way to fix it when the date and the day do not change at the same moment? the day changes a couple of hours after the date changes

nice, thanks
Awsome thanks,
Thanks again for another great video
Thanks for watching! Much appreciated!
Awesome but maybe an Up date on this video you do it a little differently now.
Awesome thanks 👍🏽
nice work Eric!!!!!!!
Thank you!
Pro tip, the dial protectors suck ass on a watch with raised indexes, since they will catch and bend the hands upwards. That was a $50 dollar mistake. Use a ziplock bag to remove the hands like he did in his other videos.
thnx
first i'll try it out on a carnival won watch
Couldn't you just set the time to 12 o'clock before you take the old hand off?
Yup, but it wouldnt be as precise as setting it to 12 after removing it. The movement might continue to run after taking off the hands, which could put it to 12:01, 12:02, etc. depending on how long you take to set the hands after removing them.
Can't stress this enough but get a cheap watch to practice on to start with.
whats with the seiko logo on that watch, looks melted lol.
I tried doing this on my Seiko5 last week and ended up miserably, it was my first time though, I think pressed too much and the press tool I have sucks, it is like yours but the white tips are screwed and not pushed and they are not sitting flat and the whole thing is shit quality. It should come up on eBay. I believe watch makers loupe or jeweler's loupe should show a bunch of results.

EVERYTHING you need for watch supplies.
GMT ???
12 am that is... Right when it flips the date
👍👏
A lot has changed on this channel in two years.
I just ruined my Datejust‘s hands while trying to install them with my fingers.
Now I watch this to make sure.
☠️☠️☠️
You skipped over the most important and difficult part. Placing the seconds hand.
4:59
Do they make a better tool for the second hand? I’m about to lose my ever loving mind. These cheap chinese tools really suck for this.
³
Those press tools are trash. The plastic tips are press fit instead of screwed on, which means it it's a bitch to remove them in order to switch the size.
Your seiko logo is abit wack.
Just a test dial! I tampered with the logo quite a bit.
When pushing in any of the hands how much pressure is needed and do you feel it sit with a click? I'm about to start my first build and it will a Willard. Any help and prayers welcomed.
