@@babzcovington492 She's said in the past the song wasn't about James Taylor. A second person is most likely Dan Armstrong, who was a famous musician that Carly had a love affair with (She even wrote the song Dan My Fling about that time). Carly told Regis that one person had the letters A, E and R - and Armstrong (whose legal name is Daniel Kent Armstrong) fits the bill. Her ex-husband also said that one person in the song wasn't anyone famous, so we may never know the exact identity other than Warren Beatty.
At some point in 1971, Carly Simon attended a party in Los Angeles that would change the trajectory of her career. That evening, a man she knew walked in with a palpable air of pompousness. Simon instantly found the subject for her new song, which she had been working on. "I said to myself, 'This is exactly the person that 'You’re so vain, I bet you think this song is about you' is about!" she recalled in 2006.
"I envisioned him looking in the mirror and the scarf twirling, and the imaginary gavotte, and all the women wanting to be his partner."
The identity of that man has never been revealed, and since the song's release in November 1972, it's driven music fans mad with speculation. Many famous names have been suggested over the years, including Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Warren Beatty, James Taylor, David Cassidy, Cat Stevens, Dan Armstrong, David Geffen and Jack Nicholson.
Without intending to, Simon single-handedly launched one of music's hottest debates. "You're So Vain" arrived as the lead single from Simon's third album, No Secrets, which was a misleading title. There was one huge secret in the LP's best song.
She confirmed in a later interview that the song is about three men and that the second verse is about Warren Beatty but she refused to name the other two saying their identity is in her will and will only be disclosed after her death. Mick Jagger is actually singing back up in the original recording. Clouds in her coffee came from a plane ride she was on with I believe Billy Merrit (a keyboard player???) and she was next to the window and clouds were reflecting in her coffee to which Billy said, Hey, you've got clouds in your coffee and she really like the way it sounded.

ms.simon is very shy and suffered from bad stage fright, almost crippling. she stopped giving concerts for years. this group of songs is from an HBO special that produced a live album. everyone listening to her is a neighbor from martha's vineyard.

I read it was about past boyfriends and the second verse was about warren Beatty who has been married to Annette benning for a long time now.
This came out in 72.warren played a playboy hairdresser in 1975 movie shampoo where he's with 3 women played by julie christie,goldie hawn and carrie fisher before star wars.when i hear this song it reminds me of rhe film.

Carly sang one of my favorite James Bond movie theme songs (for The Spy Who Loved Me), Nobody Does It Better. Her song, Let the River Run, was in the movie Working Girl. Haven't Got Time for the Pain & Anticipation are well worth a listen...one of my favorites, His Friends Are More Than Fond of Robin, is probably too obscure for most people, but I've always liked it. She's got a deep catalog.
Grew up on Carly Simon and love that people are enjoying her music. Carly's song 'ANTICIPATION' is the one that started it all. Definitely check out CAROLE KING too, if you haven't yet.

It has been a hell of a good song for half over a century. To keep the secret that long grew rhe story exponentially. She is beautiful (why would anyone who is not vain try to play her), the song is beautiful and timeless, and she performed it beautifully.
