"When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life" - John Lennon .
Except he never said that. It’s a false tale that apparently happened in his life.
Bassman is correct. There is no evidence linking this alleged quote with John Lennon. Over the years, Quote Investigator, Wikiquotes and others have tried to source it from interview archives etc and nothing has ever been found. It first appears as an *anonymous* "quote" in 2008 and thereafter at some point acquires the Lennon tag. The most likely original source is a Peanuts cartoon from 1960, reused and embellished, probably again by an American as no English pupil or teacher would ever use the term "assignment."
Well perhaps that's true, but with quotes, like stories, people take a bit of liberty. Mark Twain has been the originator for a million quotes falsley attributed to him @@Bassman.9
This song was essentially John's response to all the comments and questions about his 5-year retirement.
"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans"- John Lennon
I've quoted this so many times in my life. One of my favorite quotes from anyone, ever.
Unfortunately it wasn't John Lennon, he "borrowed" it from an article by Allen Saunders in Reader's Digest in 1957.
John had just taken 5 years off to raise his new baby, before returning back to recording. This song is about the period. One of my favorite Lennon songs, Beatles or solo.
John actually had two sons. The oldest son is named Julian and his mother is Cynthia Lennon, John’s first wife. Julian has had a decent career in music as well, and looks and sounds a lot like his dad. Check out “It’s Much Too Late For Goodbye” by Julian Lennon to hear one of his hits. The youngest son is named Sean, and his mother is Yoko Ono. Julian and Sean are half brothers.
Julian was born in 1963, during Beatlemania. It was advised by management/recrod company that John not have his Wife and Son "in view" for the audience to "love the members of the band. That didn't last long. Julien, as a child drew an imaginative item of Art, of a woman flying through the stars on a horse, that inspired his Dad to write "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" -this Art has been shown in books, and I saw it at The Rock Hall. "Hey Jude" was Paul McCartney's song for young Julian in 1968, when John left Julia for Yoko. Despite some tensions in the Lennon family, Julian and Sean now get along quite well, and have done some music project. Sean, is a versatile musician. Sean has also bee doing the remasters of his Dad's albums, with his Mom Yoko - to keep the family archive.
As deep as this song's lyrics are, I'm sure John would be very impressed with the depth of your understanding of his song.
For real, J has a way of drilling down into the lyrics, extracting the meaning of the song. A real talent that no other reactor, and I follow some good ones, really displays. He's pretty damn special.
@@RicoCosta317 Agreed. I've been watching reactors for five years, know all the better ones.....JM IS BEST
Not pausing the song is greatly appreciated, too! I feel it respects the music and the artists. Taking time to form an in depth analysis with thoughtful (and edited!) insights takes a lot of time and effort. Thank you!
I was surprised to see that this clip included a rare shot of his first son Julian along with Sean, his son by Yoko. Great song!
It's important to note how vehemently he repeats that he had to let it go. He really means that. He was extremely self destructive and was lucky to survive the 70s. He finally had his act together.
He was coming back, not to come back, but to help and thank his generation and that survived that circus rollercoaster, of 60s ,70s ...only to be cut down ..at 40. ✌️
It was heartbreaking when I bought this album back in 1980. It seemed John was coming to terms with himself and finally enjoy his life. Then the unthinkable happened. . . .
All these years later, these songs from John and Yoko's "Double Fantasy" still very emotional for me.
Sadly, this song came out very shortly before John's murder. It was playing on the radio after a 5 year break, and then it was over on December 8th, '80.
John and his son Sean had the same birthday. That party was for both.
This song will always bring me to tears. He was enjoying life with his family, only to have his life taken from his family and all the world ❤
Glad you are a fan of John Lennon's work, Jarvis ! He's a truly legendary artist.
He was such a beautiful, peace-loving,kind man...I'm so glad his killer was denied parole...twice. A great comeback record, Ironically his most successful and biggest seller, and I'm sure he would've given us even more had he lived. Good pick/summation Jimboy!
of all the songs in the universe, this one is my favorite
Actually John Lennon had 2 sons, one with each wife. I’m a new subscriber. Enjoy your videos.
This a great song and you nailed it. But the song is bittersweet. He had some of those happiest years of his life and was looking towards the future. But it was not to be. He was taken from the world too soon. Thinking of the last few weeks of his life always brings tears to my eyes. It hurts just as much as it did in 1980. His loss had such a profound impact on my life.
Thank you for such an insightful review.
I was in 6th grade when John was assassinated. I had Double Fantasy on vinyl before John died, and his death hit me pretty hard. I grew up with Beatles music in my house.
Finally found happiness, peace, wanted to share that.
What a freaking loss. ✌️
I miss john😢 my fav artist🤘❤️
Thank you sir, fantastic take, glad he took off for a while, valuable time!
Glad you understand this song. A lot of people don't.
I remember exactly where i was when John passed, that memory fused in my memory forever.
His son Julian also was a musician and has a few videos you can find. He looks and sounds much like his father.

This is my favorite John Lennon tune. Something about it is just a little more perfect to me. And that’s a great mentality and mindset- to take comfort in the little things. You can let the little things be quite big.
Lennon wrote many classics. “Watching The Wheels” is exceptional. After years of not recording, the song explains to fans why he didn’t miss the big time & fame.
"I tell them that I'm doing fine watching shadows on the wall." Platonic.
His songs give peace a chance and working class hero are definitely must hears.
You're my favorite John Lennon reactor!
A song for our time, love the connection between Rush and J.L.
Thanks for getting to this favorite of mine. I had never seen the video before. it was great to see the home videos with John and his family. Sure miss this guy being around. Makes you wonder.....
John Lennon was an amazing artist all around
Elton John did a beautiful tribute to Lennon called Empty garden after Lennon was shot. Some of the lyrics focus on the location of the hotel where it happened
Elton was good friends with him and is the godfather of his child
You're really smart. Enjoy your reactions.
He was a good art student and wrote a few books. That’s
John Winston Lennon.
Really enjoy your reviews, you always pick up good lyrical meaning and you enjoy most of what I love. Keep it up!
He had two sons. His son julian was born while John was in the Beatles. John missed a lot of Julian's early life because of that. When his second son, Sean, was born John didn't want to miss anything. It was a good thing he did slow down because he was killed when sean was a young boy but he has a lot of memories of his dad.
Wonderful reaction and insight. 😊Jeep Rocking Brother!'
That mix is very good.
Great song.
PAUSE!!!.... YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS SONG... Hit play....
Jim Keltner on drums, real tasty and simple.
Andy Newmark played the drums
Brilliant man.
Great song! I can relate. 😁
Great!!! Job!
These songs and videos always make me so sad. John had two sons, Julian and Sean, the one in that video is the youngest, Sean.
John took a 5-year hiatus from the music industry to raise his second son, Sean. He did a wonderful job here of silence seeing his critics. Of course, he had to use his music to do so; there's a bit of irony in that.
Not many artist put their own life in words for all to ponder what it all means like Lennon..... I Love It All, is what it means to me. Thanks again for another exceptional song to your collection, and mine.
People say I'm crazy
Doing what I'm doing
Well, they give me all kinds of warnings
To save me from ruin
When I say that I'm okay, well they look at me kinda strange
Surely, you're not happy now, you no longer play the game
People say I'm lazy
Dreaming my life away
Well they give me all kinds of advice
Designed to enlighten me
When I tell them that I'm doing fine watching shadows on the wall
Don't you miss the big time boy, you're no longer on the ball
I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go
Ah, people asking questions
Lost in confusion
Well, I tell them there's no problem
Only solutions
Well, they shake their heads and they look at me, as if I've lost my mind
I tell them there's no hurry, I'm just sitting here doing time
I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go
I just had to let it go
I just had to let it go
Mick Jagger also had a pad in the Dakota…he was one who asked John why he wasn’t out there being a star….which Mick obviously needed…and John didn’t .. John had a couple of sons.Sean was the younger , Julian the elder..different mums
A+ reaction as always
Your first time hearing John Lennon solo was..."Working Class Hero". Now you have a fine Playlist of his music.... I Smile each time.
John had an older son, Julian. oh no was cruel to Julian after his dad died. He desired some of his father’s things. Julian had to pay for them. He became a musician as singer and so did Sean. They’ve gotten closer over the years.
I'm sure it was hard not to be a Beatle anymore though
Have you reacted to "The Captain of Her Heart",by Kurt Malloo, you will like it.
This reminds me of something Adam Savage said the other day, "can the world solve this problem?"
In other words, don't waste your time arguing with people if they have obviously incorrect ideas, just step back and wait. Their ideas will run into the world soon enough and the world will correct them.
He had 2 sons, one he forgot about. I love his music but the guy was a hypocrite
He didn't forget about Julian. They connected often in person, and then when John couldn't leave the country and be able to come back, by phone. He recorded a song with Julian playing drums when he was about 11 and it's on his Walls and Bridges album. If anyone kept them from connecting for awhile it was Yoko. John loved Julian. More importantly, Julian forgave him, so who is anyone else to say anything bad about it who wasn't there.
@@lauraallen55 he was 100% a hypocrite
@@donaldhynson4538 Oh, that tired trope of 'oh he had millions of dollars and sang about imagining no possessions'? lol! How dare someone imagine such a world. Horrible. lmao!
Nothing to say about 'forgetting' Julian now?
It's fascinating to me how there are those who spend their time putting down others. Curious as to why they even go to make comments on videos about someone they don't like or whom they don't like their music... ?
I find so many better things to do with my time than to seek out videos of people I don't like, nor care for their music lol
@lauraallen55 he absolutely forgot his son. Just because you say he didn't 😅 who the hell are you ? The encyclopedia of John Lennon 😅 he was a hypocrite in many ways. You can stick up for him all you want. Means nothing to me the same as what you think you know 🤣😂
@lauraallen55 I didn't seek it out mouth. I watched a video and made a comment big mouth.
