As you said it yourself.. javelins are unique and different. You dont see them every day. It would be cool to restore, but expensive. It would make a great driver with minimal work though. You just proved that it will drive.. now its on to making it safer. Awesome episode guys..

    Love these old AMC cars. I ha b e had a 71, 72 and 73 Javelin. I've built a 304, 390 and 401 for them.
People don't give them enough credit for what they did.

I had a 70 Javelin in high school with a 304 and a 4 spd manual with a Hurst shifter. Mine suffered from the front wheels locking up too, but it was a bad master cylinder. When my front wheels decided to lock up, I had to back up until they started rolling again and then I was good to go until next time. I also had the same long shackles to compensate for the clapped out rear leaf springs.

I always thought Javelins had one of the nicest looking front ends of the period muscle cars. Had a friend who had a 74 Charger SE with the 400 magnum engine and a 72 Javelin that he dropped a 527 (? Don't quote me on the cubic inch but it barely fit) racing engine in, converted to a T-top, pistol grip shifter and a custom pin stripe job (which is what he did for work back in the 70s. That Javelin was fast. Alabama even had a few that were used as police cars back in the 70s.

    1974 Javelin!
Lifelong AMC fan here, would love to own a 2nd gen Javelin! I’d fix it up to driver status (reliable and safe) and drive the hell out of it, then when my son is old enough to turn wrenches we’d turn it into a father son project and make it nice. I have a few 401s sitting in storage that would be perfect for these cars. Honestly, I’d fix them both up over time, nothing better than a father and son (or daughter) pair of cars!
You guys are inspiring, keep at it! Definitely earned a subscribe from me.

Were it mine, I would simply weld in some patches over the holes in the floor, sort out fuel tank, and have a look for exhaust leaks. Probably double-check the brakes. Probably shocks. A little tune-up.

I owned a 73 javelin myself. Currently working on a 74 gremlin. I’ve been a diehard AMC guy since I was 19. (I’m 47 now) what you have most likely is a 304 car with a AMC/Chrysler 904 automatic transmission and the rear end is a AMC Dana/model 20 rear end. Between both those cars I’m pretty sure you can make a decent ride out of one of them. I hope you don’t put a Chevy motor in it.

The AMC 20 axle was neither designed by, made by, or affiliated with Dana/Spicer. It's entirely AMC. The AMC 15 axle was sold to Dana in the 80's and renamed the Dana 35, but was an AMC design dating back to the early 60's.

Never messd with Javelins, but do have my own AMX story.
About 45 years ago, we had a family neighbor, and the father ran an AMC Dealership. Around my town, we also had a Chrysler plant. Mopars, Javelins, AMXs, Hornets, Ambassadors, everything! But let's get back to AMC...
They had 2 Hornets, and their son had a 69 AMX. He tore it apart already. It was first white, then red, then he painted it purple. Graphics on the doors was hand painted Tasmanian Devil, from the cartoon. Added some, I think, Mickey Thompson wheels. Under the hood, an insanely modded 390 or 392. That hood, of course, got an insane hood scoop, to be friends with that intake. Interior was mainly stock. I do remember that T-handle Hurst shifter. Great audio system: Just an 8-track and some 6x9's. The tapes played were Boston, Molly Hatchet, and Charlie Daniels.
That AMX won many drag races at St. Louis International Speedway. I was only like 12 or 13 then, and I rode in that thing, holding my ass on, for dear life. GREAT TIMES.
Fast forward to now, 2024. The son is now aged in his late 70's. Guess what, he STILL has that AMX! Kinda off-topic, he's also built a Chevy Vega station wagon. Shoe-horned-shoved a 350 in it. Also did a great performance mod on a 73 Triumph Spitfire convertible. As always, even 45 years later, his cars RIP!
Thank you for taking time out and reading my story. Greetings and blessing from San Diego, CA.

As a Ford guy, i think AMCs are very underrated. My friend bought 2 AMC Eagles that used to be my grandpas. One being a pretty mint 1982 Eagle SX/4 with a 304 V8 swapped into it and an 82 wagon for parts. On his they have Ford Carbs and ignition, a GM Master cylinder and steering columns, and a Chrysler transmission. Then my dad has a restored 69 AMX with a 390. But other than stuff they borrowed, they made pretty much everything else themselves

Its wonderful seeing rare cars revived for the road. I know my 1977 Mercury Marquis 4dr with the 400 6.6 and FMX is rare only 270 to 8100 of my model were ever made in 77 (depending on production number.) It's getting the Mad Max treatment getting turned into a wastelander car for Wasteland Weekend. 4000 miles round trip to near Edward's AFB and back home.
Only paid 800 bucks for it but it needed alot of mechanical work (new engine and trans) on its 2rd engine and 3rd transmission about to be a 3rd engine I need to make sure it don't break down there. So either 460 or another 400

Epic little trip with little to no budget - that's the way to do it, mate. I fell in love with the AMC Javelin the first time I clapped eyes on one. Being that I am in New Zealand, it wasnt on our roads, but on another UA-cam channel. I looked them up and found out a lot of info on the wee beasties. For a car that was basically homogenised from every other manufacturer's old stock, the AMCs still have quite a big following....but it's only now that people are getting into repro-ing parts for them so now is a good time to get one.
On the show I mentioned, I saw a '68 Rebel 2-door hardtop and was so surprised that such a beautiful car was made by AMC and largely went unremarked and ignored as a muscle car. Then on the same show, they showed a barn with an early Javelin SST complete with GO package...and THAT was when I fell in love with the shape. Here was a car that looked like the love-child of a '73 Mach 1 and a '72 Challenger, had an interior that looked cool and the whole car just looked MEAN! From every angle, the car had presence and even when the camera went three-quarter profile from the left rear quarter, she was STILL a looker. Then they walked into another barn.....and my jaw dropped. There were 3 AMC Javelins....all AMX models and all with the GO package as well. There was a mid-blue metallic one (like LeMans blue in colour), a white one and a black one - all with the decals, all with the special wheels and spoilers and such and all with the big 401 in them. The white one looked very patriotic, the blue one was stunning but the black one......wow. It was in a league of its own.
However, they never exported them CKD to be put together here and nor were thy old new on any lot, so the only ones in my wee country are imported since 1987.....and as I said, I've not seen one in the flesh. To me, they are a beautiful vehicle and even though the rear end looks shorter because of the C-pillar that carries on to the rear of the car, they are well proportioned. I often thought that they would do quite well on the winding roads in my country due to their shorter wheelbase than the Muzzies and 'vettes and have kept my eyes open for one, but to no avail. Unlike most muscle cars however, they look like someone with legs and over the age of 10 would actually be able to sit in the back seat comfortably. Again, not having looked at one up close, I don't know and would like to find out.
They are an under-rated vehicle in my opinion and their day or being recognised for what they are is surely coming. Here's hoping you can put one good-ish one together and be able to drive the beast down the road on a regular basis.....and safely! I'll certainly keep watching (yes, I am subscribed) to find out the car's fate. All the best

Great video. Those old Javelins are cool. I just found your channel. Midwesterners (especially guys from my old home state of Iowa) working on old junk cars; that's right up my alley so I had to subscribe.

Yeah, things with independent front suspension won't flat tow and follow without the weight of the engine and trans.
Straight axle vehicles tow awesome either way.

    • @DailyDrivenDeathTraps

Ahhhh, i was thinking it was due to no weight in the front of the roller. Good to know! We've never towed something like that haha

My mom ordered a yellow 68 AMC Javelin SST with black interior buckets and auto V8. She said it was Super Sport Tuff. Dad said that car was the biggest POS ever built. Too bad she didn’t still have it cuz I love those unique cars. Car was sold back in California.

Just a tip. Start checking your transmission adjuster cables aka tv cable on the linkage on carburetor. Could have kept that tranny nice and healthy because driving it with it stretched or seized will burn the clutches out due to not enough pressure. Which cause slippage. Especially while towing another car

Make a complete running and driving car from the two and just enjoy what, AMC had to offer. A full restomod would be nice but as you said it is what it is, and in my book that's just fine

1974 javelin I want that javelin because it’s beautiful even if it’s in rough shape that’s still a really cool car. I love messing on old cars and turn them in the street rods. I just think it’d be fun to play around in.

Great to see. ... Very cool nostalgic video. Gotta treat those cars with respect. I completely restored a 1973 Javlin. Light blue with a black vinal roof. Wrecked and burnt from a junkyard back in 1979 ? My sister took it on her honeymoon 2 weeks after it was done. Had it for years then stored it for years when I moved out of state. Came back to a unit that needed restored again but did not have the time or money so eventually sold it. Now I am 72 and retired. Looking for a Javlin again as my Dad was also a Rambler dealer back in the day and all 7 kids and Mon all drove used Ramblers or AMC's and would like to find one to do for my 73rd birthday. Not looking for a show car but a decent looking daily driver. How much can I buy this one for? You just don't find them anymore. I also had a 68 silver fastback but the 73 was a much cooler look . ..
