    I grew up working on these old Detroit 2 strokes. The 8v 71 and 92 series. We had an old terex loader with the 12v-92. Always a fun time when they sit for a while and the rack sticks wide open and they run away. Then you go to reach for the latch that drops the air kill flap and it’s frozen. Keeps you on your toes 😂. Also if the governor isn’t working right it will not let the compressor pump. I’ve gotten those bad outta box more times than I can count. They are adjustable as well. And there is a small fuel pump on the back of motor that’s held on by 3 bolts those get weak and won’t keep the fuel rail pressurized enough for injectors and will cause issues.

    I bought my first heavy truck a couple years ago, I'd never worked on them before but had years of experience building cars. Many totally alien systems to me. A lot of things that have potential to be quite dangerous. (The springs in the brake pots will take your head off,) once you get your head around the thing it's not rocket science. Best of luck with it..... cheers from NZ....

    Each cylinder is 71 cubic inches and there are 6 of them, or 8, or 12 etc.
    I THINK all of them are supercharger (6-71, 8-71 blower origin) AND turbo charged.

    6-71 is a 238 Detroit I think. 238 horsepower, 426 cubic inches.
    Oh and a 12V Cummins doesn’t require power to turn on fuel. It uses an electro magnet switch to do it, but it's just hooked to a mechanical lever on the pump. Easy to bypass.

    That's a transfer/parallel switch by the batteries, it should wire 12 volt to that switch/solenoid & it sendsc24v to the starter only tge rest of the truck is 12v. You can update the starter to a 12v & bypass the transfer switch if you don't want the headache of a transfer switch & 24v starter.

  • @davidanderson2393
    @davidanderson2393 15 днів тому

    If you haven't worked on diesel trucks before you have a real education heading your way, a lot of potential for things to go sideways with one that has been sitting for that long. A cab over is easier to work on but all the controls have a lot more wear points, also the transmission air system may be stuck, it looked to be a 13 speed at a glance. Which has 3 air shift cylinders, slave valve on the side of the main box which controls the high and low gear shift in the auxiliary on the upper right rear of trans. On the lower left rear of trans is the splitter cylinder which shifts from direct to overdrive, the main air supply on the trans has a filter and a pressure regulator mounted on the upper left rear. Hopefully non of these cylinders are stuck or will not get any ability to shift through the ranges on the trans and won't be able to achieve any road speed, good luck on the project.

    • @DailyDrivenDeathTraps
      @DailyDrivenDeathTraps  15 днів тому

    • @davidanderson2393
      @davidanderson2393 15 днів тому

      @@DailyDrivenDeathTraps At 10 mph you haven't even had it in direct yet, low and direct can be used in reverse also to increase back up speed. Should be a fun project, just remember you cannot use 1st gear in the main box after you shift into direct when rolling down the road. The ratio split is to large and you will need to shift to 2nd when making the shift into direct. Then you will be able to use the overdrive splitter for the remaining main box shifts. Have fun grinding gears learning to make shifts, just don't get to aggressive or you will have some real issues with the trans.

    My guess is the new starter you got was 12 volt and putting the 24 volts to it fried the solenoid. Most trucks that had the start on 24 run on 12 was bypassed long ago. In the end i think it was just running out of fuel

    These people need on of those push button starters that hooks to the starter and bypasses all the key switch stuff on the dash. This engine if started does not need anything electrical running. To drive home though it needs the alternator to be alternating.

    Sounds like the rack and governor needs adjusted it shouldn’t roll the rpm’s like that at idle. I would run it a bit and if it doesn’t come out of it you will need to run the rack and set the governor gap and adjust idle and buffer screw.

    So as a 2 stroke, are yall adding oil to the tanks as you're fueling? Or is there a separate oil tank?
