    Wewak was the scene of one of the gutsiest US submarine actions of WWII. Thanks for the good view of it. (USS Wahoo, under LCDR “Mush” Morton entered Wewak harbor without real charts, and sank a IJN destroyer with a memorable down the throat torpedo shot.)

    Hi Ryan, Great to see the Mt that close up after 53 years. Three of us flew up to Kegulsugal in a turbo C206 on a Saturday from Goroka where I was stationed flying for the Lutheran Mission. We camped overnight above the lakes. Up before dawn so we could be at the top a little after first light, It was clear & the view was fantastic towards Madang. A great memory from a three great years in PNG.

    My wife and I climbed Mt Wilhelm back in 1979. We camped at 11,800ft near the second lake and headed for the summit in darkness to get there for the sunrise, something most people try to do (could be one reason you have not seen any hikers yet). On a good day you can see both coast lines (north and south) but we didn't because there was a layer of cloud below us. A great experience not to be forgotten.

      The Daher Kodiak is available on the MSFS Marketplace from SimWorks for about $35 USD in a zillion configurations. I just bought it recently and have been flying it exclusively ever since. It's a 'for real' aircraft. You have yo pay close attention to start ups, etc as you can actually damage the PT6 if you Hot Start. It'll quit running and die an early life.
      I've been flying several flights a day in PNG, high on Ryan's inspiration from the videos. I'm planning on buying into the Kodiak tutorials, too. I have had my real life PPL since mid 90's but at 62, no good reason to drain my bank account playing with airplanes anymore so I just bought the Honeycomb Alpha/Bravo, a new gaming desktop and big curved screen, and I'm scratching that aviation itch from the safety of my office chair! 😅

    Along with my sons and a couple others climbed Mt Wilhelm back in the '80's. It is a spectacular view from there. We got up there just before sunrise and watching the sun come was great, plus we could see both coastlines for few minutes. We used to work with NTM/Ethnos in the Sinasina. We didn't travel by air as we were able to use road, though I think it was safer travelling by air.

    Area QNH is the lowest forecast QNH for a period of hours ahead (3??) over a fairly wide area. Consequently, if the QNH is higher than forecast, or is yet to reach the lowest value, the apparent altitude of a visible feature will not be correct. (as best as I can recall)?

    • @MissionaryBushPilot
      @MissionaryBushPilot  2 місяці тому

      It's basically so all the airplanes can be flying on the same altimeter setting so we are all at the same Indicated altitude

    • @Fidd88-mc4sz
      @Fidd88-mc4sz 2 місяці тому

      @@MissionaryBushPilotNot really, it's so that your terrain clearance is always greater than that which would be using any current airfield QNH in the area, and it does so for a few hours ahead. It's secondary benefit is, as you say, in allowing aircraft to operate on the same QNH, but that's not really why Area QNH came to be. Otherwise, they'd simply use the lowest QNH ever recorded in an area and use *that* - which would keep aircraft on the same QNH for traffic separation. In effect, that's similar to how flight-levels work. It's terrain-avoidance that impels the use of Area QNH's, the use of a common QNH for traffic reporting etc is a side-benefit.

    At what altitudes do you use O2? When gliding, I start at 2500m (we are metric!) when I expect to go above 3000m. We use the Mountain High O2D2 system, that saves huge amounts of O2 compared to just enabling a constant flow from the O2 bottle.

      @@MissionaryBushPilot Wow - you know that the human body cannot store O2. I suggest you take an oxymeter (put on your finger - really inexpensive these days) when 5 minutes at 10'000 Ft to check your saturation.... Being at 10'000 Ft without O2 has the same effect as having drunk 2 glasses of beer... (and you don't notice it).

    As a "Right" handed person why do you wear your watch on your right arm? Have you always done that or is it a Pilot thing?

      because the wind on the watch hits my wrist on my left hand making it very uncomfortable

      I was told in the forces that you wear your watch on whichever wrist makes it easier to demonstrate with the other hand how you rolled out of a tight turn to end up neatly on your opponent's six o'clock!

    Those watches are expensive, and nothing you can't get from Seiko. Not only that, but Seiko 5 are mechanical (i.e. automatic winding) so no batteries are required.

    Ummm, Ryan, your nifty watch isn't actually working here, lol. Looks like the sweep second hand is frozen in time? Still, it will be absolutely accurate at least 2 times a day for exactly 1 second, right? ;)
