  • Becoming a missionary pilot takes many years of dedicated work to complete all the training required. This training is a vital part of the process to be able to safely fly in the rugged mountains of Mexico.
For more info on UIM Aviation go to www.uimaviation.org
Average is ten years to become a missionary pilot:
    1. Commercial pilot (500 hours)
*Because of the ruggedness of the mountain flying in Mexico, a high level of technical competence is required. A missionary pilot needs more than just average piloting skills.
    2. Aircraft and Powerplant License
*Because most of our pilots serve in isolated areas, an airframe and powerplant license is also required.
    3. Minimum of one year of Bible school
*There are many great options for Bible schools.
    4. Join a mission
    * Information about joining UIM

    5. Raise support
    * Raising the 100% support required by UIM can take between 1-3 years.
    6. Language school
*UIMA missionaries attend Rio Grande Bible College which is a 9-month program.
    riogrande.edu/en/academics/ic...
*For safety and longevity, all pilots and mechanics on the field are required to have a working knowledge of the language. It is important that they can communicate with the locals.
    7. Field orientation
*After getting settled on the field, it can take up to 12-months or more to complete on-field-training.

We have been missionaries in Mexico for many years. We've been on some pretty Epic ADVENTURES, and we thought that it was about time to take you along on these adventures. Jasson flies a Cessna 206 into various mountain bush airstrips for medical evacuations or delivering supplies to the missionaries living there. But our ministry includes so much more than just bush flying. Follow along to see all the different adventures we experience.

Great video! Worth mentioning that there are also mission aviation organisations that do not require pilots to also be mechanics (MAF International, Ethnos360, Samaritans Purse who are salaried so no support raising). Obviously then the time to the field is a lot quicker and being both a pilot and mechanic is not for everybody!

i know for a fact that Ethnos 360 pilots have to raise support. I personally know of one that just came home from flying missions overseas for one year for a break and to raise support. I support he and his family every month.
