16 year old builds tiny home to guarantee mortgage-free future

  • Austin Hay is still in high school, but he's building his own house. It's only 130 square feet, but it makes him a homeowner without a mortgage at just 16 years old. Right now, it's parked in his parents' backyard, but he's built it on wheels so he plans to take it to college and then wherever he goes after he graduates.
    He's been sleeping in his tiny home for a few months now and he's already decided not to return to big (his parents' home is 1800 square feet). "Living small means fewer bills, living big means more bills," he explained from the tiny stoop of his new home. "I don't want to pay big bills".
    Hay's 130-square-foot home may make him the youngest member of the growing Small House Movement.
    Hay expects to spend about $12,000 building his home (the used trailer cost him $2000) and he's paying for it working two summer jobs (at a camp and at a park snack bar). He's cut his costs in half (the home's estimated DIY price is $23,000) because Hay has scavenged everything from doors, windows, and flooring to the kitchen sink (the hardwood floors were $25 at a salvage yard and so was the stainless steel sink).

      yeah, also the parent's income support, parent's backyard to be able to build it in, a house to live in and zero bills to pay WHILE he does it.
      I love this, but we shouldn't praise people when you don't see what actually goes into his success. if he was living in an apartment in a city, or a community housing unit cramped in, if he had to work on all his spare time to be able to help pay bills, then he would not be able to do this. that's what kids my age don't realize - a lot of your success depends on your parents. cudos to him for actually building it himself, but - is his dad a handy man? are those his father's tools? did his father teach him, or did he have to buy everything himself and teach himself how to do all this? probably not.

      I think he's hit a nerve because they never did anything that required hard work and dedication at his age. I'm proud that he built it even though it isn't perfect. At least he is learning new things as he goes. He could have worse hobbies.

      "no man" is referring to the collective human race not a specific gender e.g "one small step for man". Its clear by the context that this is what I meant, I generally find its a strong indication of stupidity when someone starts the opening of there argument with a red herring. Your remark was not placid, it contains a wealth of insight into the way you think, which I find distressing. Negativity for the sake of negativity.

      LMFAO people who say that are ignorant and living on some fantasy cloud.
      he's building this in mommy and daddy's backyard, in the home that they own, one.
      two, his father is handy.
      three, his father's buddies are handy and helped with the electricity.
      four, he does NOT have rent or any bills to pay at 16 years old. he has the time, energy and drive to do this. his parents probably helped finance A LOT more than you think.
      when looking at someone's success, you need to look at how much of that success was the parents passing on their privileges (as they should though!) down to their kids, so they can succeed in life.
      i've lived in apartments my whole life. don't know anyone with power tools. haven't known anyone with a backyard and space to do something like this, since i was 12. i don't know a single person who could assist me on this WITHOUT me having to pay someone.
      i do have my mind set on doing this, it's just out of my reach financially. even if i have the funds, tools, and skills, i'd still need a place to work on it.
      life is more than just "putting your mind to it". everyone has different privlidges and disadvantages in life.
      look at that US snowboarding olympian - at 8 years old his family picked up and moved to colorado JUST so they can help him train, and at 17 he won gold. if he didn't have that support from his family, if he was living in poverty - guaranteed he would not be anywhere near as good as he is. that's a fact.

      If your kid wasn't sending txt msgs and showing his/her independence by coloring their hair or whatnot, then something would be wrong. Kids need to be social. Otherwise when they reach adulthood, they will not have developed the communication and social skills necessary to succeed in life.
      The whole "kids these days" arguments are nothing but those in a generation on its way out looking back, jealous of the youth they've lost.

    • @alan30189
      @alan30189 10 років тому +6

      Michael Medlock
      Sure they need to be social, but they don't have to look like freaks to do it! Are you kidding me?
      Also, sending text messages all the time is going to effect ones ability to communicate verbally. It's far less personable. Talk to people! Associate with people in person. Don't just send thousands of text messages every week. It's pitiful, plus it's an inefficient waste of time. Kids are getting fat sitting around texting constantly. Look at them. Ask your parents if girls and boys were that fat when they were in high school. They will say: "hell no!"
      I don't have children, but if I did, I would limit text messages severely or eliminate them entirely until they are older. It's not a necessity. Neither are cell phones, but I would let my kid have one for emergency purposes. They need to develop verbal skills to succeed in life. Call the person and talk to him or her! Also, when my kid started driving, he or she would need to turn the cell phone off entirely when driving until he or she got to his/her destination. If they didn't, they would lose their cell phone for at least a month.
      And trust me, my youth was of far better quality without all this crap than yours will ever be. There is NO jealousy here. Although modern technology is nice to have, I feel sorry for kids today to miss what I experienced, growing up.

    • @imalaakebab4525
      @imalaakebab4525 10 років тому +8

      What YOU experienced is not what everyone wants to experience. You just sound bitter and sad, this is the age of technology. You either get with the times or you don't, plenty have swung both ways, so the kids these days argument is invalid. The quality of childhood is determined by the child him/herself, not what you think it is. I spent most of my childhood playing sports and video games and I think that was amazing.

      Gloves on any sort of rotary instrument is a bad idea because if he were to cut his finger with it, the glove would make it more difficult to get his fingure away. In other words, the gloves would pull your whole hand in, compared to just your fingure.

    Congrats young man on the constructive ambitions, independent desire for self sufficiency and realism. Skills and finances are the backbone of survival and will help you thrive. So many of us were never taught just how much it costs to live and take full responsibility for the many benefits and freedoms that need nurturing to grow, thrive, be a success (whatever it means to anyone) for longevity. Basic needs come first, everything else is just icing !Thanks Kirsten as well for giving him the exposure to share his knowledge and experience in hope of helping other young people be inspired, understand and manage priorities and essentials. • @matad311
      @matad311 9 років тому +14

      But that's not the same and rewarding as building something yourself. Anybody like you can go out and buy something then have the same thing as many other people. When you build your own thing its one of a kind and no one else has the same thing as you. In this case this kid this is his project and his own that he built, I give him a lot of credit for doing this, I don't know too many kids anymore that would go out and build something they would rather buy it. Great looking house man!!

This kid did more that 99.99% of kids his age do. How about do some research and look at the cost of an apt. I pay $1200 a month for rent, bills, etc etc. Yea he may seem to have paid a bit for it ( idk I haven't ever done that) but to me in the first year he has saved it or even made money off of it by saving so much. Plus he did it himself and didn't have to save it to a hard drive.

      you have spoken nothing of labor costs. and obviously the trailer and the appliance costs are not to be added into the square foot evaluation. thirdly, it isnt meant to be a house, its meant to be an alternative to the problems that arise from civilization/unsustainable ecosystems. i dont mean to be insulting but your inaccuracy might lead some one else on this thread to believe that a tiny house is a financially inept decision, when it so clearly isnt . especially for someone of his age. think before you write things on here they have a chain effect

    You "cut, measure & cut some more"? Okay you're only 16, so for best results here's a tip and what my Dad (a real builder) told me. 'Measure twice, cut once'. Sounds simple but works surprisingly well. And it's saves you loads of money & frustration.

      Hey, we have the same saying in Germany.
      "Zweimal messen. Einmal schneiden."

      - Well my Dear Old Dad used to work with Germans on building sites in Sydney Australia, and they were great guys. You never know, maybe it's them he heard saying it first and he just sort of claimed it for himself. He was a bit like that! ;-)

      Alex König - a WW2 vet who worked for my family doing construction use to say "measure twice cut once" he said he learned it from Germans, he stayed in Germany after WW2 to do construction and chase women

      Sniper Picks- Ha, ha, ha. I love that! Personally I really enjoy listening to WW2 veterans (both sides). What I found interesting is just how many didn't go to war for patriotic reasons at all. For many it was about adventure, seeing new places or just getting away from the hum drum of daily life. Sounds like your WW2 vet had his head screwed on the right way, staying on afterwards for work & women. Work, romance AND education. What a combination! Take care ;-)
