Teen tiny house builder Austin Hay finishes dorm on wheels

  • We first visited Austin Hay after he had just finished his sophomore year of and had built just the shell of his tiny home on wheels (based on plans donated by Jay Shafer, now of Four Lights Tiny House Company). Now, Austin is in his senior year of high school and he has finally completed his home, including a full kitchen, DIY sofa-bed, nearly full-sized shower and composting toilet (doorknobs and solar to come).
We stopped in at his open house where his house was packed with a dozen friends (at any one time). His mother weighs in on the future of tiny houses (his high school and other local schools have asked for Austin's guidance in building their own versions), his girlfriend answered our questions about living in something tiny one day and his grandfather playing Santa Claus to help Austin finish his tiny dorm on wheels.
More info on original story: faircompanies.c...
    * Austin's open house was filmed by Johnny Sanphillippo (from our video "Mortgage-free tiny home on a housekeeper's salary") and John and Emily Dirksen (my parents who happen to live nearby).

not funny at all ! some folks have their priorities in order and sex is not even close to the immediate top of the list! some folks don't feel the need to have sex with complete strangers but to share something this important with someone who's important to them! there are some who don't buy into the crap that's stuffed down their consciousness on a daily basis in everything around them...including other Opinions of what's none of our business ✌

My apologies to Austin for all the comments below that are rude, immature and critical. That is very typical of those who sit and do nothing. Armchair critics are a dime a dozen. You, Austin, are what the real America is made of. Well done and God bless you and your family.

Deb Fryer and sojourner...agreed!!! Although the negative comments are unneccessary, mean-spirited and hateful, they do define who YOU are...or really rather who you AREN'T!
Austin Hay doesn't need your endorsement or approval. He's already won by not saying a word.
~ ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS!!! ~ Where's your video? Where's your Tiny House? It'd only be fair if we all had the opportunity to critisize and critique yours. Oh wait...
AUSTIN, YOU ROCK DUDE! Keep on keeping on...the world is a better place having you in it. I, along with I'm sure countless others, would be proud to have a son that is as focused and as driven as you are! Huge props to your loving family (and Santa) who gave in numerous different ways to support and help you to become the fine young man that you are!
Your Tiny House is a HUGE accomplishment and we thank you for sharing your journey!

Austin is so far ahead in the game of "Life." He knows how to evaluate possessions and decide what he needs versus accumulating piles of crap. He has planned, engineered, built, and all those are confidence builders.
I really like his grandfather: I would be incredibly proud, too. He's a solid young man and I hope he feels really accomplished.

Just Beautiful. This young man has strong values and morals. The sad part is that I know people who are in their 50's and 60's who have no place to sleep or eat, because they are too lazy to do anything! This young man had the dream to put it all together, so he would not only have his own privacy, but enabled himself a safe place to be as well, and not be a burden in the lives of others. I'm glad he will be on the speaking circuit to share with others how they too can achieve such a inspirational goal. Amazing young man.

I think this would be a perfect set up for a kid his age. Gets him into construction early so that he knows how to build and maintain a house, gets him somewhere to live for college and maybe a bit beyond for cheap compared to renting during that time, and he's mobile to find a school/job that he wants to be at. Once he's set up roots and is ready to settle, he can buy a full size house and still have this as a guest space or as something to pass on to his kids in the future.

Austin, if you read these comments, just ignore the haters. The internet is full of ignorant, hateful people who have nothing better to do than spew crap upon others. You did a great job, and thinking "outside the box" and doing things different just makes people jealous. You used resources, donations and family's help and you used them well. You are an inspiration and a role model for other teenagers. Keep up the good work.

Pardon me for saying so and you guys can trash me all you want but this kid did this in 2 years with the family's leftover materials, Dad's construction/foreman supervision and Grandpa's money...very focused, but unimpressive nonetheless...I've seen people his age do more with less and without the luxury of, what looks to be, a huge support system around him....

    • @CowsGoM3ow

Because everyone's family is the same right?
I've had and used the opportunity to work full-time during the summer at $13 an hour while taking 4 courses in college (community college). But still, my family does not want me to work part-time during the school year because they want me to focus on my studies and that they will pay for my college expenses( I find it ludicrous). Not everyone has the luxury of the support of their family for everything they do, but in the end , they all achieve(or don't) their goal with or without help. And unless you plan to belittle every achievement with "Someone out there has done it better while being worse off.", then you must be telling me that just because your you're a quadriplegic, you cannot complain/be happy (you're alive)because someone out there is a quadriplegic with autism and no family and he/she has it worse off than you.

CowsGoM3ow First of all let me just say you're incessant rambling is somewhat confusing...a little tough to decipher but I think I get the gist of your comment...unfortunately, you don't get the gist of my comment but please, let me explain a little more clearly.
...Your whole "they all achieve their goal" argument is from a fairy-tale world that you obviously still live in....contrary to popular belief, ALL do not achieve their goals. ALL have dreams but ALL don't reach them because they lack a support system. Yes SOME achieve goals on their own without a support system and my immense respect goes out to them...but there is a LARGE portion of Americans who were not able to do so and still work today as adults trying to raise a family on what you made in your summer job. Good for you and good for your parents who are helping you...I'm glad you have that support system...you are truly blessed. I was not trash talking his achievements as much as his means of achieving them....I said I'm not impressed....and I'm still not.
Listen...I'm not impressed because ANYBODY could've done this with the huge support system this kid had (2 years to do it, the land to do it on, all the tools at his fingertips, Daddy's construction/foreman supervision, Mommy's encouragement and Grandpa's money)...are you kidding me???....give any goal-oriented, able-bodied person that kind of support system and they could build a billion dollar corporation... that, my friend, is why I'm not impressed.

How can it cause diseases if it is not being consumed or being absorbed? You don't magically get sick. Nonetheless, the cost of a "tiny home" is at least 1/4 the rent of an apartment. IT is also mobile and more environmentally friendly(IF you care about that) and it utilizes space more efficiently than family sized homes.

14:07 This is a big problem for me. He took the SATs, then they lower the audio so you can't really hear, but he didn't do so well... so he has to retake them. The initiative and drive to plan and actually build a house is more than most people, myself included, will ever accomplish, for him or herself (as opposed to doing something for someone who pays you). SATs be damned, this kid should be allowed to go to any college he wants.
