Not a boring video at all. Very informative and interesting. I went for the Summit and love it. I really like your shop setup. Wished I lived in the US. My kind of country.
Your issue with the Hornady sizing die not being beveled I find as a feature. It means it's going to size a little bit further down on the brass. If you're having a problems aligning a bottle neck cartridge into the sizing die there's a larger factor at play than it not being beveled. If we were talking straight walled, I get it. Personally I feel a small base die is a marketing gimmick. RCBS advertises it sizes brass to minimum specifications. Wasn't aware there was a standard for what is a minimum. I viewed sizing brass like the Price is Right, close to spec as possible without going over and it should work in everything.
Great video! I know this video is 5 years old, but have you tried the RCBS Rebel single stage press yet since it debuted? I wonder how it compares to the Hornady Iron Press and the RCBS Rock Chucker.
HI Johnny. Just found your channel. Great job! I've been reloading a dozen or more calibers since about 1991, am an ex-progressive loader. Now, I use only a Rockchucker and an old turret press. They both make beautiful ammo. You give great advice, and I hope to learn from you in the future. Thanks!
Cliff Collins for some reason UA-cam won’t let me answer the comments like normal. Anyway I got in a big habit a long time ago to size my brass twice. I make sure I push the brass cartridge all the way to the back of the shell holder then I run the ram up and size it once then I spin the cartridge about a half turn then I size it again. I know a lot of people will say I’m working my brass more than I should but it seems to work for me. Thx for watching my video.
SOME KINDA GOOD THERE OLD MAN SOME KKNDA GOOD. Wooo hooo. Thanks for spending your time to do this. This is a great video. It required a lot of effort. Thanks so much for all your effort. Either of those machines are totally awesome. The proof is in the the concentricity gauge. The only way to get better that what you did off hand would be to go to total bench-rest standards. High dollar brass. Weigh brass. Weigh bullets. Same brass. No range pickup. Necks all turned to same thicknesses. Then build the cartridges. Use bushing type dies. Be very consistent on the press pull. This maybe would be better!!!!! Plus practice practice.... After all that the group sizes will only decrease 1/4 moa. The price will increase 4 times. Unless you want to compete bench rest there is no point. Your present set ups are the apex of loading.
Thank you for this video. I am from Brisbane Australia. I am looking at getting into reloading. I research everything before buying as everything to do with guns is so expensive here in Oz. You taught me a lot with this video. Thank you again.
Fantastic info.!! as for a ~vs~ test it kinda looks like the RCBS walked away the winner, but Hornady is great stuff as well! Very straight and honest testing , great job! I wish you continued success !
Appreciate the time you put in making this video. What 223 bullet did you seat in the cartridges loaded in the Hornady Iron press? And what seating stem did you put or have in the Hornady seating due?
Quiet Old Man Brother I closed my shop 2 years ago. Wal-Mart was right across the street and I just couldn’t compete with them. Glad you liked the video.
I have the co-ax and the summit. Even with Lee dies the co-ax loads extremely accurate ammo for bolt guns. With the Summit I back the black die bushing off just above hand tight, oil it real good and it floats to center the bullet almost like the co-ax. They are both great presses.
Nice shop and video Johnny! Wish I had a place like yours around here! I have both of these and I like them both. I really thought I would use the priming system on the Hornady more, but I dont . I got a Frankford hand primer that is so much better than my old RCBS/Hornady hand primers. It really is the cadillac of hand primers -who knew?
This video is the Nobel Prize in accurate reloading with off the shelf tools or any other tools! The 2nd hornaday reload in under .0005 should get you the cover of reloading magazine! Then the RCBS Summit and RCBS dies... same thing in the 4th reload under .0005 (that's 5 ten thousands) walks off with the top spot in this faceoff for its overall accuracy and consistency. Now its time to move up to more accurate measuring tools just to keep up with these great tools.
Hello, What I have seen, this press is the one for me, 2" shaft, cant get any better than that. It would lend itself to fine tuning as well which Ilook forward to.. By fine tuning I mead chech the squarness of the die faces to the shaft axis, etc, etc. I have been looking for some match grade dies to load some Remington 17. But not having any luck, can you suggest something... Cheers Noel
Hello, I use the imperial lube and noticed you put some in the mouth of the brass. Is it safe to do that? I am just learning a bit more. Thank you for a great video....
Johnny you must be the MOSES of reloading 😳 ! Now! My question is: will a standard .223 FL die change the specs of a 5.56 into a .223? I often hear that .223 bolt rifles cannot shoot 5.56 😤
I have locknload bushings on my summit press. I think Lee quick bushings are better . But I go back and forth between my Hornady AP press and Summit so I have to use lock n loaded bushings.
Outstanding video brother. You're a great teacher. Thanks, and please keep it going. One thing. You have what I have with the breathing.Get a sleep study for apnea. We need you around for years to come!
Hey! Very interesting video! I had a lot of presses and dies in the past. But had always some issues with concentricity and some other things. I agree to 100% with your opinion about the Hornady stuff! So I sold most of it.... The best results I have with Forster Bench Rest Dies.... Are they really necessary for me, probably not! But if you have the best feeling with them, they work best for you.... 😂 One of the next things will be a new press. Either the Rcbs Summit or the Forster CoAx. Maybe you could make a video about the Forster, at some time..... Thx for your *snowflake-resistance*
Damn Good Video. Overall I think it was a fair a comparison as anything else. I am a Hornady user but I also have some RCBS equipment. In my opinion they both make the best single stage equipment on the market.
Very good presentation. To be completely fair assuring consistent springback, all the brass should be confirmed from the same origin lot#, fired the same number of times, from the same chamber on the same day with no heat influence. E.g, rapid fire on part of cases where the chamber was overheated.
For some crazy reason UA-cam won’t let me reply to people’s questions. Anyway the last question I was asked was what is the name brand of my micrometer. I bought a 40 dollar micrometer at harbor freight.
I recently bought a Summit press. I was using the Lee Classic press. The difference? Night and day. Wow. My ammo is better, and getting smaller groups when shooting.
The difference in coal is caused by different neck tension of the brass. Also, rcbs dies were clearly better. They didnt over size brass as much as the hornady ones did. Also, you can just drop the bullet into the comp seater even before you lower the die on top of the case.
concentricity is not really a big deal with good dies....a good barrel is a big deal plus good bullets...plus u need to check your seat depth by the og running into mag issues u just set for .040 clearance
Suggestion: Try a dial indicator that will read in ten thousandths each mark. They are not expensive on line unless you by a Starrett brand. You wont be straining to read the deviation. 0.0001 in.
I’ve loaded thousands of 223 with standard RCBS & Hornady dies and have never had feeding issues. That being said Hornady dies win hands down due to there seating stems for multiple styles of projectiles and that why rcbs sucks across the board of handgun & rifle.
I wanted the summitt press and I was gonna buy it, but the rockchucker was so much cheaper so bought it instead. I feel like I cheated myself over a couple dollars. These things last forever and I aint gonna miss 70 dollars 10 years from now and my grandauhgter aint gonna care when she inherits all my reloading equipment. 70$ is gonna be like 70 cents by then
Loved how you moved your rubber bumper down on top of your indicator. Thats not where it goes, it stays under your top cap on the indicator stem. You also need to clean your indicator stem it is moving back way too slow. Using your so called rubber oring down on top of indicator is gripping your stem. 25 yr machinist ge aviation. !!!
Thank you so much. Now I HAVE to go back and see every one of your videos. I hope they are all a MASTERPIECE like this one!
Not a boring video at all. Very informative and interesting. I went for the Summit and love it. I really like your shop setup. Wished I lived in the US. My kind of country.
40 videos later and finally find the one that answers my specific questions and even some I didn't know to ask.. thank you!
Great video! Thanks for making! I’m literally choosing between the summit and Hornady big boy A frame models. Thanks for the incite! Great video! 👍🏻😃

Actually, that is about .0003 runout at 38.21 minutes .200 if an inch. Retired machinist. Thanks for the help with this video.

RCKN - RNDL Thx for watching.
Thanks for taking the time to make this - very helpful.
Matt Schmalz Thanks for watching. I closed my shop in 2018 and havnt made any videos since but I’m planning on starting up again.
@@reloadingwithjohnnyray-bac8775 Sorry to hear that sir - best of luck to you
@@reloadingwithjohnnyray-bac8775 Hope you have been able to reopen up your shop since you replied to his comment 3 years ago.
Great video! Love your stuff. Good detail and make it easy to understand! Keep the videos coming!
Which press do you recommend me for reloading .308win and perhaps rarely a lighter caliber? A single stage or a turret one? Any sugestions?
holy hell ..This video is freaking Awesome!!!!!!!
Wouldnt sizing the brass the least but still under SAAMI be better for case life? I would say RCBS gets another +1 for the least amount of sizing
Nathan Hassey Probably but I always had tons of brass so it wasn’t a big concern for me.
New to reloading, great video. Where's your shop in West Virginia, need to stop by for some supplies. Subscribed to your channel.
Quiet Old Man Brother I closed my shop 2 years ago. Wal-Mart was right across the street and I just couldn’t compete with them. Glad you liked the video.
Wonder what you think of the Forster Co Ax floating design for good concentricity
Vince F I think it’s a great design and Great press.

I ALWAYS sort out military 5.56 and civilian .223 , AND only shoot .223 in my ar -15 and my bolt cz 223.
Hello, I use the imperial lube and noticed you put some in the mouth of the brass. Is it safe to do that? I am just learning a bit more.

Jim Castillo I never had any issues with lubing the inside of the mouth. Thx for watching

Loved the video! Loved the honesty! Where is your shop I’m ready to stop bye!
what was the brand of micrometer you were using to check case diameters
Good job. Thank you. Can’t decide which one, first time on channel. Thank you for the video

That a 1/2 a tho not one if am not mistaking plz correct me if am wrong 👍🏻
Great video been looked no at a summit press you just made my mind up to get one
John David Player great press brother.
John, you don’t have to pull the handle down, then drop the bullet in. When press is up just drop the bullet in and pull down. Thanks

Terry Brightful thx for watching
Peter Acero. For some reason I can’t reply directly. Anyway it’s just the RCBS small base die set. They sell them at Midway.
It wasn't boring, well worth the watch.
Awesome video what is that exact die on rcbs and where can I buy one thanks
Thank you I learned Lot. Think I’m going with summit And RCBS dies for my Ar 223 Wylde and 6.5 creed for my Remington bolt.
For some crazy reason UA-cam won’t let me reply to people’s questions. Anyway the last question I was asked was what is the name brand of my micrometer. I bought a 40 dollar micrometer at harbor freight.
Most interesting! Thank you!

In the 14 press shootout on UA-cam the Supreme won conricity second only to a $1,000 German press from Europe
good video helped me make a choice
Thanks Brother, I’m a Newbie learned a lot.
What’s the brand of your micrometer?
AF-O6 I bought it at Harbor freight for around 40 bucks. Not sure about the name brand but it’s the only one they sell... Thx for watching my video.
concentricity is not really a big deal with good dies....a good barrel is a big deal plus good bullets...plus u need to check your seat depth by the og running into mag issues u just set for .040 clearance

Overall, quite valuable and interesting info.
But realy, should have fire formed a box of high grade ammo, prepped the brass and then made this vid.
RJinNH Thanks for watching.
Good Stuff brother!!!!
Reload reload reload hell yes. Your videos fucken kick ass.
great
Its been reported those RCBS seater dies with the bushing&window add a few thou runout. Please try a standard seater die in the Summit press.
Nice!
👍👍👍
