Are ADHD and autism the same? Can someone have both ADHD and autism? How do you know if your child has ADHD or autism? These are among the many questions parents think about when going through a diagnosis of their child, or prior to one. In today’s video, I discuss the difference between ADHD and autism, what the signs of autism and signs of ADHD look like, and how applied behavior analysis can help your child overcome either. It’s proven that aggressive treatment can lead to possible recovery from autism, so let’s jump right in! When you do not know if it is autism or "just adhd", you are underestemating ADHD. I find my ADD very difficult, probably because people do not know how deep it goes

i remember my mom used to say that she suspected i had autism as a child but instead was diagnosed with adhd. it honestly makes a lot of sense now why that was the case

I know I'm both since that can happen as well. Was diagnosed in elementary. Too bad I got rejected for autism due to trauma (got tested sometime in high school). Ironically my rejection sensitivity dysphoria (which adhd and autism have) is what stops me from trying for a second diagnose. I'll just live with this until something bad happens when I get a job.

Lmao, ironically my mother didn't notice that I had severe ADHD symptoms because she also had severe ADHD symptoms so didn't see anything weird about how I was acting.
Let's just say when I got diagnosed, while she hasn't been diagnosed, she's very clearly got ADHD and Autism.
Honestly there needs to be more teaching for parents to spot the signs of mental health disorders, because I have a really high IQ, hence did incredibly well at school despite having many issues with basically being able to function, hence it wasn't spotted until college when I personally had to sort it out due to recognising issues I've had for basically my whole life.
If I ever have kids, I'm going to be so careful to make sure I get them the help I need. I was delayed but my parents did nothing, and while it's not their fault per say, I still wish I got help sooner.

Thank you so much for this information! We are finally seeing a developmental specialist next month, after starting early intervention eight months ago. We receive a lot of “false reassurance” and are always told not to worry and that our son will catch up, it’s very frustrating! We feel blessed to have families, like yours, that share their autism stories! It helps to know that we are not alone in advocating for our child.

I can relate to a lot in both autism and ADHD. :') I've had delays in learning speech, and other things related. and I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 18 months. I have moments where I'm impulsive, and a whole bunch of other things.. I haven't been diagnosed with autism, but I have asked about seeing if I can get diagnosed or if I am diagnosed. There's a bunch of things in the autism spectrum that I have noticed throughout my life. Such as things with sensory, emotionally, mentally, and socially.
But your best medicine is dont give up on yourself

This is confusing, since one has to be at least 5 years old for the adhd-diagnosis. Autism you can diagnose earlier.
My son who is 5 was diagnosed with ADHD/ADD. He didn’t start “mumbling until the age of 3 1/2 He still has speech problems. Most ppl doesn’t understand him, but I do. I have finally found a dr who is getting him tested for autism. Idk how long this will take, but hopefully I’ll find out soon enough.

We are lacking in great numbers of younger generation now in there 50tys , Adhd severely/ autisms spec, sensory integration and execution delay , frequent changes of temperature light or sounds my distort the mood and might look bipolar !! I have noticed im fine all day until i get upset with a problem that i feel i shouldnt have to deal with
have you done a autism vs social anxiety/shyness comparison? since people with SA tend to avoid eye contact, be nerds and awkward. would people with SA eventually "grow out of it"?
I am not sure as I have not done that. Thank you for watching. I think if you are concerned it is best to get a full developmental evaluation.
I grew up as that 'socially awkward, nerdy shy kid' in school, with the bullying that accompanied that. Was diagnosed with Asperger's (now level 1 Autistic Spectrum Disorder) in the 4th grade, age 9. That was then; I am now in my early 50s and I can tell you that while I have a much better command of all of that now, I still am that nerdy awkward dude. As I said in another comment, you don't grow out of it - you grow into it. In my case, the social anxiety was due to ASD.
I searched this up because my sister called me autistic several times. I have severe clinically diagnosed ADHD. It has caused my learning to slow. And my brain development. And maybe I have autism. I show quite a bit of symptoms and I don’t have good social skills and I’m extremely artistic, but I am terrible at sports and academics. I will never be able to attend college. I am just so sad and I hope I can improve myself. :(

Leah Rose you sound just like me! Severe ADHD, but didn’t know I also was on the spectrum until my 40’s. Whatever you do, don’t have lots of children. Trust me. I have four- all on the spectrum or ADHD - and my husband passed away so I am raising them alone. My life is a nightmare.

My brother goes to therapy, he has therapy/ABA for eating, social skills, how to speak, and more. The whole pandemic was hard cause he was gonna go into kindergarten and that was so important to get social skills but he couldn’t go to school cause of stupid COVID.
My brother was diagnosed with Autism at 2 or 3 I was diagnosed with ADHD at 7 and my Dad was diagnosed with ADHD at 37 or 38.
My dad had it rough when he was a kid he grew up poor and his teacher was racist to him when he was in 3 grade grade. He would get in trouble a lot but that’s because no one knew he had ADHD and not until I was diagnosed with ADHD is when he got diagnosed. I love my messed up family :3
Right now I am even learning how to socialize at 13. 😅

My son is 3 years 3 months and is really hyperactive and the Dr said he has mild autism.he keeps chewing on his clothes till it's wet and runs around and yells a lot.Any suggestions pls? He doesn't talk either just baby language.

Have you tried any diet modifications? Most people agree milk and gluten exacerbated symptoms in Autism.
It might be worth it to get him some stim toys!! Personally, chewy necklaces like the ones you can get from stimtastic.com really helped me with not chewing up my clothes so much!! If you find him stims that he likes, it may reduce his running around and stuff! Its important to remember, however, that stimming is incredibly important in an autistic person's self-regulation!
I’d love to hear this comparison with inattentive A.A.D and autism. Most of the videos I’m finding only address the hyperactivity A.D.D.
ADD isn’t a diagnosis anymore. It’s all categorized as ADHD
I would too- my son definitely has more of a attention deficit- not really hyperactive but they group them together. Meds didn’t work. Now with his potentially having Autism- it’s behavioral-he gets angry and lashes out but he’s well spoken and makes great eye contact. Reading up on medical marijuana and full spectrum CBD benefits for this. I don’t want him on long term pharmaceuticals.
There are a few clear distinguishing differences between autism and adhd and for that reason I think generalizing it under the umbrella of autism on the spectrum seems loose and vague rather than clear and concise.

@AlenBerkeley What? You have got to be kidding me? Is this a statement just to spark debate? what is your reason for this thought process? Both ADHD and Autism have strong science and research that have shown the they are both serious issues. Although I understand the argument that it seem that diagnosis of both has risen exponentially and I completely understand the frustration with a tend that has started in the U.S. to say that any child who is difficult for parents and teachers must have ADHD and they want to jump right to medication. I can say that although this is troubling and wrong it doesn't change the fact that ADHD is a real a serious struggle for many people. However it is supposed to be or job as parents to do or best to learn about the difference between a board child and a child with ADHD and to advocate for what is best for our children. They are defenceless and if you are referring to giving children meds to make life easier for anyone but the child the I agree 100%, but to claim that these aren't real problems hurts children with legitimate issues by encouraging parents and others to take on the mentality that they just need to be more strict, better parents, or worse advocate the use of phisical violence to control their children. I can assure you that it's not going to work it didn't work on me and wouldn't work on anyone suffering from a condition that they have no idea how to control. All they learn is that just being themselves is something to be ashamed of, that they have no escape from the punishment as they have no idea how to make the person happy so they may as well not only not bother to try but they usually decide to act out in other ways ways they can control... your doing a great deal of harm with this off the cuff comment that "one of them is real and one is NOT".

@@amarantaviera8811 I totally agree with you! I was really offended how the author was saying oh yeah you can recover from Autism and ADHD. When she as a doctor should know that both of those disorders and the result of how your brain is wired. And rather than expecting a child to be normal parents should do what they can to help their child succeed but appreciate them for their differences and what they bring to the table. When kids feel like the odd one out, not enough, and a burden it can scar them for life.
Hi, I am starting to have concerns about my 18 month old grandson…have had concerns for a few months. He walked at about 15 months, he does not respond to his name, stopped using some “words” he tried to say, curls his hair, flaps his hands, runs around out side in the same motion..not engaging, sometimes with a flap and the same sound which is not a word. His eye contact is very limited. He does not connect much to a command or word. I heard you mention pointing, he does not do that. I am glad to find your site and after babysitting for him this weekend..I will talk with my daughter. They have had him evaluated by a state program for speech who recognizes a delay. The doctor was just as you say.

I have autism bordering adhd I still have it in about 5 months from turning 20 years old and engaged, I got in to a very addictive habit, chewing tobacco, the nicotine does actually help me cope with it, I never was cured but I am a working adult

Watching these videos gets me frustrated. I noticed my daughter had symptoms before she was 2 and our family doctor wouldn't listen to my concerns. He literally turned from his computer, looked at me and said "She doesn't have autism. She doesn't flap her hands" Oh, it's that simple! At 3 I demanded he get her a pediatrician, and FINALLY, at 5 1/2 years old, she was diagnosed with autism. Now I feel panicked to try and get her help. Thankfully she has been in a great school, had the same teacher and EA since preschool, and doing her second year of kinder this fall, 4 days a week.

I think my 7 year old may have ADHD. She has a slight speech delay and when it’s homework time she gives me a very hard time, and has a difficult time trying to focus. She goes to speech class at school and it seems to be helping, however her focusing hasn’t improved much and sometimes she gets frustrated during homework time when she doesn’t understand something.
Focusing and executive function skills are certainly tough for some kids !

I didn't walk until I was 2. I had the vocab of a 3 yr old at 18 months. I was out of nappies at my insistence overnight by 18 months. I could read by 3. Yet my mum was told by the specialist that I was a 'bright but slow developer' and that was that. Only now am I finding out I have both ADHD and ASD. As women we are so dismissed (more so in the 80s when I was a kid than now perhaps, but it still happens). So just be aware that the first time you see a specialist they may try to dismiss you, especially if your child is female.

Please help. My daughter is 3 and I also have a 1 year old and a newborn. I just recently became a single mum and my daughter is going out of control. If she wants something she repeats the same word over and over without even taking a breath, she looks for her brother around the house just so she can pull his hair or push him, her speech is so weird she says random things can't answer yes or no and she actually knows a lot of words just can't make sense of them and also if she doesn't get what she wants she goes in to a massive meltdown where she will scream and break things. For example last night she woke up in the middle of the night saying she wants to take a bath I tried to explain that she already had a bath and it time to sleep. She just turned in to a little hurricane started yelling so lound my neighbour call to check if we're ok started kicking the headboard throwing things and spitting I couldn't calm her down so I just give in and gave her a quick bath but after she had a problem with her pj it was tearable from all that shouting my 1 year old and a newborn woke up so now all 3 where crying 🥺 my nursery practitioner is saying that she's artistic, our health visitor is saying that all kids develop differently a behaviour professional is saying that it might just be stressed and attention seeking because dad is not around and she only has me to turn to. I really don't know what to do or who to believe...

My son has so much energy. He doesnt listen throw temple and a runner. I started communicating with his teacher. She said she thinks impulsive control. So I took him to mental health department for diagnosis. Said he has adhd. He also will be starting speech therapist in March. His teacher wants him check for that

Good on you as a mother to catch for your child early. I have autism and just been diagnosed at the age of 32 because my parents didn’t think nothing was wrong with me when all the signs were there all my life. My life has been hell up to this point. Get your daughter the help she needs early.

What do I do now that my son is 14 snd was diagnosed with adhd, sensory issues AND ODD at 8. But now I’m learning that likely it was something within the autism spectrum? What can I do now to help him and give him what he needs to thrive!?
If you think it may be ASD you may want to look for another evaluation. If you can find a bcba to help guide some programming for him that may help as well.
I don’t quite line up with ADHD, so maybe I have ASD? It would make more sense. The only issue is that I can’t tell if I’m just masking a lot, because I can (attempt to) control myself when needed.
Can you do this for adults too? I Struggle with the Idea that i have Asperger autism. I was diagnosed with adhd in September 2020, too but I think that some Symptoms do not Match with adhd, but match with autism.

My 3 yr old has autism but my 2 yr old is showing signs of adhd.. very active has random out burst likes picking at things and climbs and pulls his hair and does not sit still at all he's going to the doctor so hopefully they will have some answers as to his behavior

I know this is a year old already but this might still help you:
First of all, a lot of people will tell you how great ABA is, but I suggest that you specifically look for autistic people to tell you their experience with it, as you are looking for the best for your son, not for the best of people that "have to deal with them". Sure, a more compliant child is easier to handle, but sometimes the childs needs can be forgotten on the way.
ABA is compliance based, and often overlooks the childs needs. It teaches the kid that they have to follow rules without explaining why. Now that way it often looks like its working great, but it makes the child susceptible to abuse, as they learn to tolerate touch that distresses them, behaving a certain way even though it distresses them, and that they wont be heard when voicing their objection anyways. Many kids that go through that kind of therapy seem to become "better" and like "functioning members of society" but years later develop PTDS, anxiety and identity problems. Most ABA tries to reduce stimming for example (repetitive behavior like flapping hands, chewing stuff, repeating words,...) even if it is not harmful, so the child seems more "normal". But stimming can be very important to autistic indviduals as it helps us to regulate emotions and can even serve as a great communication tool. It has been shown that stimming is healthy, and surpressing it in a child can lead to severe distress, which it is then taught not to show.
If you want some further reading material I can send you some informational articles, but for now, i just hope you and your son are allright and wish you all the best. I promise, autism can bring some hardships but it can also bring some superpowers along.

I didn't know I had ADHD and when I discovered I tried telling my mom she said I was being immature for my age so I kept it to myself. And I have been looking for a lasting solution since then. With the help of Dr Iyhere on youtube I have been happy recently.

My son is going to be 3. He was assessed by developmental paediatrician before 6 months and diagnosed at risk of autism. He is receiving ABA therapy since 4 months. He improved a lot. He is verbal. When should i stop ABA therapy?
That is great that he is doing so well. Every child is an individual and so I cannot say when he should discontinue ABA. ABA can be used to help people of all ages and abilities.

I can teach him noun easily but he doesn't understand verb. Knows 1 to 25 and alphabets. Knows colors n shapes. Says rhymes by doing actions. Calls me mumma. But doesn't have attention. He has good memory power. Some times doesn't respond to the name. Whenever i ask where is daddy he'll point n show some sometimes. Points at his water bottle n says water also. Sometimes very limited eye contact. Plz reply
@@malamurthy2935 hi mala. Its Good for your child if you start ABA. They follow individualized protocol for every child. Earlier is better. stay in Ahmedabad. My son receiving ABA therapy at sparsh paediatric clinic, Naranpura, Ahmedabad. Dr. Kinnari bhatt is BCBA working in Bangalore, under her supervision and guidance,here clinical psychologist work with my child

I’m pretty certain my son, also named Lucas 🤍 has autism. You just know the differences between your other children. He too has speech delay and pretty much all the signs. But when we were having him evaluated to get the test done, the doctor dismissed autism saying he was too social cos he gave a toy back when asked? I was pretty certain that no two autistic children are the same, thus the spectrum, and that all other signs I brought up were ignored only because he responded to this doctor. Thoughts please? As yes, I am going for a second opinion cos early intervention is key to helping him.
That doesn't sound like a reason to rule out autism that is for sure.

If your child is struggling in school, I would absolutely discuss your son's diagnosis with his teacher so he can receive proper support (if/when needed).

Hi.. I am from India I liked all ur videos. My baby is not diagnosed with autism but he is not talk and now he is 2 year old. I need train him in a proper way so I need your help. What is the order to teach him how to talk I I don't know. He will do all my commands like bring a items or sit properly, give a toy to granny etc he is understanding what we will tell him.
Main thing is he is not turning to his name at once. At the age of 1.5 years he was saying brother sister mom papa granny bye come but now he is saying only mom. Y I don't know. This video has made many mothers smile when you said the difference first and second it is "Just ADHD".
I know right. "just ADHD". I've been around severe autism with my brother, I had ADHD along with other mood regulation issues and eventually addiction starting at 15. My 6yo son has mild autism and ADHD. May I say the impulsivity and aggression from the ADHD is very disruptive. it's not just ADHD when you have to literally drag your child to school bc having to sit and focus, the banality, is torturous to him/her. then your typically very thoughtful and agreeable child with several DDs starts hitting and pushing as a fight or flight response bc forcing their fast brains to do slow things is torturous like needing to run in solitary confinement so bad but your tread mill only goes snails pace and kinda keeping up with you (when engaging in favored activities).

I wish there were resources for (especially females) ASD 30+ year olds who missed the boat on getting diagnosed as a child. I wish there were more resources for the people not in the classical scope (like, not a child). Also there are like zero resources for ASD moms who get a diagnosis (sometimes at the same times as their autistic child lol) and how to cope with adult life and a child while having autism. I guess the world at large thinks we don't have kids; maybe if I had known that what I had was ASD I would have reevaluated my capabilities. Too late now lmao. (My kid is two; really struggling with overstimualtion right now for example).

Hi Dr Mary, what is the difference between ABA and the TEACCH method in autism.
Teacch uses behavioral principles but I do not know enough about all the specifics to have much input. ABA is an umbrella with many different styles under it. My VB techniques are certainly extremely helpful for many learners. Check out my free video workshops bit.ly/2ELvSnM

I have 4 year old toodler , he is very hyper active and distructive, with speech delay , he started speaking when he is 3 , after 3 year old we sent him to Montessori , with in 3 days they told he is not listening, doesn’t sit in place moving around, not coming from slides and all, but when we read a book or do activities at home , he used to do and learn every thing , we are not understanding what is going, we even took him to his pediatrician, but she is saying nothing nothing all the time , the private day cares are not taking for his hyperactivity,, he is going to be in kinder next year , we are getting worried , if he doesn’t sit in in his place and doesn’t listen to teacher what happens ,

I swear my son has Asperger's. My brother has it and I believe I have it as well (he is diagnosed, I'm not). But my son is now 6yo and they no longer want to dx him with autism. Only ADHD.
That can be challenging. I do not know your child but if you need support don't be afraid of getting a second opinion.
@I Love The Colour Pink Asperger's no longer exists. It is part of the autism spectrum disorder. Classifying someone as having Asperger's over autism based solely on "functionality" and IQ is extremely offensive and nonsensical. And those are the differences. Those are literally what the differences were between the two diagnoses. Bs.

my son was diagnosed with adhd when he was 5 he now 6 but his school is also concern he also have autism he likes to be alone gets mad quick and some days take a little while to claim down he also hide under his cover when he upset to he also have a speech delay hard to understand him he points sometime instead of talking his social skill not good he plays ruff he now going to therapy he going back to a child development next mouth where he got diagnosed with adhd to see if he also got autism
Good for you and the school to continuing to advocate for more testing to see if he is truly autistic.

I was told people with autism don't like anyone to hug them and don't like to touch anything. I suffered from been "bothered" by family members and someone said maybe I was autistic because I don't like people near me. Wow! People are idi... you don't become autistic, as far as I know.
Also every autistic person is different.
Personally ... I don't really like getting touched but that's not a fast and hard rule with me. There are times I crave a touch. However, if I am stressed that is not the time. :)

No. They’re similar, but very different. Autism deals with communication issues, sensory issues and repetitive/rigid behavior. You have to hit all three to be autistic. ADHD doesn’t have any impact on communication at all.
They do have similarities and overlap and it’s common to be both autistic and have ADHD. But they are quite different at their core.
One exists. The other doesn't.

Although I understand the argument that it seem that diagnosis of both has risen exponentially and I completely understand the frustration with a tend that has started in the U.S. to say that any child who is difficult for parents and teachers must have ADHD and they want to jump right to medication. I can say that although this is troubling and wrong it doesn't change the fact that ADHD is a real a serious struggle for many people. However it is supposed to be or job as parents to do or best to learn about the difference between a board child and a child with ADHD and to advocate for what is best for our children. They are defenceless and if you are referring to giving children meds to make life easier for anyone but the child the I agree 100%, but to claim that these aren't real problems hurts children with legitimate issues by encouraging parents and others to take on the mentality that they just need to be more strict, better parents, or worse advocate the use of phisical violence to control their children. I can assure you that it's not going to work it didn't work on me and wouldn't work on anyone suffering from a condition that they have no idea how to control. All they learn is that just being themselves is something to be ashamed of, that they have no escape from the punishment as they have no idea how to make the person happy so they may as well not only not bother to try but they usually decide to act out in other ways ways they can control... your doing a great deal of harm with this off the cuff comment that "one of them is real and one is NOT".

I didn't know I had ADHD and when I discovered I tried telling my mom she said I was being immature for my age so I kept it to myself. And I have been looking for a lasting solution since then. With the help of Dr Iyhere on youtube I have been happy recently.
