Repair Blog: Laney GH100L Modification with before/after sound clips

  • This Laney GH100L made its way on the bench because it had a hum that recently developed. Since the amp was going to be opened up I decided it was time to do a recap and perform some modifications to get a little more versatility out of the amp.
    The main focus of the modification was to be able to remove the "cold clipping" stage and still utilize the existing additional "Drive" stage to get more of a modified Superlead sound.
    The modification allows different configurations of the preamp without having to drill any holes in the faceplate and all modifications can be reversed. I also didn't want to veer too far off the original sound as these amps sound pretty good in their stock form.

    I like at the end of the video where you said made this amp more flexible, one could even say you made this amp more Plexible. Cool video. It's a good time watching you repair and or mod these amps, ect. then hearing the results. thumbs up.

    That cold clipping stage removal mod sounds awesome. Really plexi ish. It's something I had considered doing years ago . I love this era of Laney's. A bit too much maybe, I've got 2 gh100l's and 2 vh100r's and have gigged with them for years. Thanks, I'm inspired to do the mod.

      I play with moderately high gain at times but I still favor having the cold clipper stage out of the circuit. It sounds more like a cascaded JMP that way. Glad you dig the video!

    Thanks. I am thinking about going from a Butcher to this amp to get a little more gain. I’ll try similar mods you got this sounding awesome!

    I had a 50 watter of this one for several years and to me there was nothing Marshally about it. I loved that amp and I miss it. The only reason I sold it was because I needed something I could do clean & dirty, but the way this was designed it wasn't really feasible in a live setting without a drive pedal, and I didnt have the financials to have more than one amp at the time.

    My favourite amp, really interesting video to see someone playing around with it on the bench. I have no idea how any of this stuff works so really cool to see how much variation can be done by someone who knows what they're doing. That strat sounds great too, were you running this through a mic'd cab or an IR?

    • @purgasound
      @purgasound  2 роки тому +1

      It was either an SM57 or an Audix i5 in front of a Marshall cab with G12-65's if I recall correctly.

    Awesome! You are one of my favorite guitarists. Where did you learn so much about amps?

    • @purgasound
      @purgasound  2 роки тому +1

      I used to frequent the MarshallForums and was a fly on the wall over at PlexiPalace. Always tried to work on my own gear and did a lot of studying... I'm always studying. In anything you do you can never stop learning.

    Wow that looks like a repairable amp compared to many new amps. I wonder if they are still built like that

    Do all of these Laney GH 100 used the same model of tubes I got one for a crazy low price but there are no tubes and it’s missing the power sockets so I think yours sounds amazing

    could you point me to some sort of schem where the cold clipping stage has been removed / bypassable? i really liked the plexi/superlead tone you demoed. i play 99% clean so it might be beneficial to skip the clipping stage alltogether. many thanks, great insights here

  • @lordgraga
    @lordgraga 14 днів тому

    Hey, I know this video is a few years old, but a question: Instead of entirely bypassing the cold clipper, could you have achieved a similar result but switching in a smaller cathode resistor to make that stage more transparent?

    I think for the modern sound I enjoy, the Ironheart wins out. Great classic sounding amp though.

    I had a VH100 (same drive channel) but it was faulty and I didnt have the money to fix it, so I sold it off. Now owning a modern GH50R which is a good amp, but I feel like the old GH50L, 100L or the VH100 just sound a little better, more ballsy and raw

    I have a Marshall JCM900 SL-X 2500 with 5881's, and a Laney GH100TI with EL34's (basically the same as the GH100L), and they don't sound the same at ALL. Might be the power amp tho

    • @jupitermoongauge4055
      @jupitermoongauge4055 2 роки тому

      Yes it is. But I would definitely check the bias. Your 8ohm speaker jack becomes a 16ohm speaker jack after pulling a couple of tubes.

      Not sure without looking at it. Try swapping the first preamp tube and see if anything changes.

    How does it compare to a Jcm800?

    • @purgasound
      @purgasound  3 роки тому

      I wouldn't say they are far off in stock form but after the modifications its just like an 800 with the extra stage disengaged.

  • @szaki95

    If you turn off the resonance, then it's a 100K NFB just like the Marshalls, no need to mod it.

    • @purgasound
      @purgasound  3 роки тому

      I modded it because I wanted the effect to be more subtle. The bass boost in the power section is quite a lot in stock form. I like a resonance control, more so in the form of a potentiometer but a static boost is good now that it is tamed.

    The AOL Pro Lead is more like a super JCM 800
    The GH100L is more like a Super JCM 900

    • @Wardell43

      When I traded some stuff for my GH50L, it did not work and needed a transformer, so I got the GH50L for about $300 including labor.
      I also have a Laney VC50 212 and a Marshall JCM 900 2500 50 watt
      I love Laney Amp and once had a 50 AOL ProTube Lead which is a great friggin amp
      and I've had several Marshalls over the years and Fenders and Sunn, Crate Blue VOODOO and a few Peaveys
      Sunn Model T would have ate my 100 Super Lead. Both were awesome.
