Damn good video. I’ve owned 2 of each the 50 and 100. Extremely underrated amps!!! I’ve been wanting another lately. Besides my main amps (Soldano/VHT), there’s always a couple of amps I like to have around for different tonal options. For me, it’s the Laney GH50/100L. My last one had a few small mods to clean up the fizziness a little, and it was a beast. Great amps, and I like how you had this one dialed in.
Thank you for this video. It was one of the deciding factors which helped me to finally decide and purchase a gh100l. I will be running a stereo rig with my dsl. Playing heavy blues rock.
I happened to own the 5th ever production model of the Laney GH50L 5881/6L6. Did me proud for nearly 30 years. Such a great amp.
0:13 laney
1:10 jcm
Guilherme Moraes lol the video is just over 3 minutes long. That’s funny man
Just bought a used VH100 (GH100 + clean Channel). So stoked to change the tubes and hearing it afterwards
I have a weakness for British amps and own numerous Laneys and one Marshall half stack. They both sound killer to me and your playing kicks ass!
Great sounds!
Would love to hear you play an old Laney AOR one day! Lots of rumours around that they were Laney's take on the JCM800. I have one and love it, but I've never played a JCM800 to compare.
Laney sounds brighter, Marshall sounds fuller in the mids and slightly smoother dirt. When I was selling them I thought they sounded hands down British but with a smattering of Fender voicing. I would like to get one. The foot-switchable boost is cool too.
3 knob od-1 added to it though ❤️ back when ratt got a but load of these. When Bon Jovi opened for them. Had to have one. Love laney
Both sounds great, however I prefer the Laney it sounds not that much compressed. And if I need harder drive, you can always add an overdrive pedal. I think as the Laney as a much more sophisticated tone. thanks for the video
Doesn't the JCM800 have a partially solid state power amp section or something?
@@Union.Of.The.666 2203 is all tube
@@Union.Of.The.666 that’s the JCM 900 series. Pretty sure all of those have solid state gain in them except the JCM 900 SL-X which an absolute all tube beast.
Laney all the way! Tighter, more focused. The Marshall instantly had that signature mushy sound.
This may be a dumb question but how do you have the volume cranked so high on the Laney? Is your cab mic'd up in another room or something?
i know this video is kind of old but what are the chances that you could compare the laney to the jcm800 2210?
Does that Les Paul have a broken string?
are the tone settings the same on both amps? thanks... great videos
Hey cool - what settings do you use on each..?
Gh100l had more high end. I guess it depends on amp settings for both amps and also how old the valves are (and what make).
Great video and glad I have a gh50l as back up to my marshalls. Though I'm tempted to give it a blast again!
Do it and see how it compares :)
Gonna be using the GH50l again for my original band Usurper (uk). We have just finished recording our debut EP , soon to be released.
I recorded it with the DSL 50 and (thanks to our engineer) it sounded immense. However it's now gonna be used for a Judas Priest tribute band I'm in ;).
I can't wait to hear it!
The 800 sounds a fuller to me, tho' hard to tell here.
Still the best hair on YT ... :)
I'm flattered :D
I thought the Laney sounded good, but the difference was clear once It is made for that tone.
As a Laney guy, I'm biased, but it's louder and cleaner. It gets my vote.
Laney!!!! It’s got more aggression and balls... plus I own one!!🤘
YES! As always I am partial to Laney. The GH is more smooth and yet has more aggression. Which PRS is that? What pups ae ya running? Is the Laney running EL34s also?
Laney goes alright hey! It's a PRS SC245 from 2008 with stock pickups, the Laney is running EL34's.
Thanks bro rawk on.
Your hair is amazing. Also, great review! Love both of these amps, though I prefer the 800 just slightly for its more compressed sounding distortion tone. I also noticed the Laney is a bit louder which changes a persons perception a lot, when I volume match the Marshall sounds a bit smoother to my ears, almost more Mesa-like.
hahaha too kind!
I’ve got two GH100L and i love them, but they actually work with 6L6. Always wanted a jcm800, but I think if i load one of them with EL34 can get it closer to a real jcm800. What do you think? And by the way, what kind is that GH100L carrying?
Yessss
Laney is like a son of JCM800 and Mesa... Super crunchy highs with nice low-end.
Hey Leon , thanks for sharing. Nice video. What can you tell me about the Hammer Studio on the wall? I’m thinking on buying one 95’ here in Brazil.
Sweet guitar - I don't play it as much as i should but the one's from the early to mid 90's are super solid.
I prefer to Marshall Jcm 800 because Marshall have bright and mid-low sound and i like it.
Recently tested a jcm and laney vh100r, the jcm800 has totaly different experience live, lot of middle frequencies. I think the different transformers and component age. The fact is each amp has its own sound and no metter you want to sound equal simple don't. But near is, good choise is to have a marshall and laney, this way you will get best of two worlds. I think laney has more fancy and sofisticate tone, pair very well with v30. Marshall very classic rock monster, pair very well with greenback or g75 for metal, offcourse v30 too.
a fairly loudly played, fairly highly distorted GH50l with a early 80's Boss SD-1 goosing it further, a slight delay(Chandler stereo digital echo) in the loop gives you a really nice buzzy (in a good way) lead tone with loads of sustain/controlled feedback. Something very very simlar to Marty Friedman's tone on his Dragon's Kiss record and as a matter of fact on the Go Off record too. There's a certain Buzz there that i always have really dug. Maybe that old SD-1 more than anything though, because I've played this amp since 2003 with a TS-9 and never really got that sound. either way, the Laney is staying in my collection. Really like that thing!
I love that you mentioned Dragons Kiss because I love that tone so much!
Same here. I've heard people say they hated it but i think they are nuts! Its unique as hell. Oddly enough, I think it was the common little Boss SD-1 more than anything! I'm using a bone stock, not-so-well-setup-or-tuned 1992 Ibanez rg760 with strings that are nearly as old as my car, & which never really was a tone monster to begin with at all and it still sounds close. With a freshly strung alder bodied guitar with Duncan JB's it be even better. Also In spite of liner notes saying dragon's Kiss was recorded on Laney amplifiers, I know for a fact straight from the horses mouth that he played a JMP 2203 on that record with his Jackson Kelly equipped with his usual JB's and an Old SD-1 (he said this himself on his website where people ask questions about gear on specific records etc) but I'm so close now i'm calling it good. I still want a '76 or '77 JMP 2203 don't get me wrong! :)
Where's the Laney logo?
Hey Leon, great video as always mate! Just wondering if you have any experience running kt77s in your Marshalls for that almost 6l6ish vibe?
I don't, I'd love to though! KT66/77/88 tubes are always pretty pricey.
Leon Todd I think you've sparked some serious gas for a gh50l in me! Given they are so cheap as well! Was considering chucking some kt77s in one
Thanks for doing this video. Due to Laney's difference in the tone stack (220n cap instead of Marshalls 22n... Yes they did ten times bigger value) the EQ works differently. I changed mine for 47n it's still beefy but cuts through the mix better. It needs some tweaking with knobs and you can get much of what JCM800 does and more :)
The marshall has a choke, does the laney? also I know the laney has a toroidal transformer which might make it tighter feeling?
Not sure about the choke bit the toroidal transformer is a big factor
How would you compare the laney to a jcm 2000? I'm considering getting either (or a jvm 205) - loving the riffs from your in-studio videos btw mate :)
Thanks man, I can't wait to unleash all the tracks because it's a very guitar heavy record. The Laney sits in between the two channels of the DSL to me; it doesn't have as much tight, controllable gain but it's awesome for a straight up rock crunch. My personal choice would be JCM 2000 DSL, then Laney, then JVM. The Marshall vintage Modern is rad too.
thanks for the reply man, food for thought, and cant wait for the record to drop!
cheers from the UK
@@LeonTodd the laney is the 800 circuit to a T plus an extra tube stage kicked in copied and better built than any Lee Jackson.
It is also pretty much a marshallised soldano slo in there. If you change just some values, nothing else it is the same pretty much. The loop differs somewhat.
Funny how all things are connected.
If you want another budget hidden gem track the cheapest g50l mk ii onwards.
It is the same amp only that it retains the jcm 800 channel but the extra tube forms a fender like very good sounding clean channel in parallel, totally solving the I don't have cleans in a crunch amp. The guitar comes in and either goes clean or goes rock.
A boost pedal and reconfigure the loop mix pot to be a pressence knob and you ve got a fender 800 dual amp for next to nothing...those amps are bad repped because they are 112 celestion seventy 80 combos with 6l6s...you can do el34s and go blackmore or Oliva all day and they are nicely weighted as well...
To my ears it sounds like the Laney GH100L has more gain, truth be told it sounds like a hot-rodded JCM800. Then again the reason for that is quite obvious, the GH100L is basically as JCM800 with one additional preamp tube for extra gain. In easy words the GH100L is a just a JCM800 with the Lee Jackson mod.
That makes the GH100L a great choice for 80's Hair Metal.
Or thrash. :)
@@Admiral_Bongo Yeah, it works for Thrash Metal too. However for late 80's and early 90's style Death/Thrash Metal American high gain amps like the Crate BV300H & BV150H, Peavey 5150, Krank Krankenstein and Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier sound better.
@@TheNocturnalEvil Or the such hidden gems as Peavey Ultra, VTM and Ampeg VH140C.
@@Admiral_Bongo I love the Ampeg VH140C. It sounds massive.
Hey Leon I am seriously considering getting a gh100l or vh100r vs jcm 2000 dsl 50 or 100 I like the paul gilbert/ nuno b type sounds, and the leda (deluhi, undivide, far east dizain type sound) so anywhere from 80's thrash shred to super brutal. what are your thoughts?? thanks
IIRC Gilbert used a VH and Opeth used the GH? The DSL is a tad more modern sounding overall IMO. You can make all of them work for those tones.
Leon Todd So a month later I ended up getting a GH100L, really cool amp. Currently running 6l6's gonna have it serviced and retubed, any suggestions on tubes?
Fantastic! If you want to go the EL34 route try score some NOS Svetlana's or Tung Sol tubes. I've got JJ 6L6's in a few amps and dig those. Try out a 12AT7 in V1 if you want a bit more clarity too.
I currently have svetlana 6l6wxt+ power tubes, I tried a quad of mesa el34's I had lying around after biasing them up I found the amp too congested in the midrange on the higher gain settings, In lower gain settings it was very sweet and pleasant but didn't warrant keeping them in, The 6l6 works alot better for this amp when you want low end detail and a more open sound, I tune in drop b flat on a 6 baritone. I am looking at purchasing some jj 6l6gc's and all ehx preamp tubes, I tried some sovetk lp's and jj ecc803's (not to be confused with the ecc83) in different positions too, the amp just does not like those long plate design preamp tubes.
The jcm has more low mids by the sounds of it making the laney a bit brighter/open. But fairly close for sure.
Laney all the way
My vote goes toward the Laney GH100L; a bit slicker and smoother sounding.
A dude nearby selling a gh100l with the 4x12 cab for 900, should i got for it ? they dont come around that often even online.
What's the cab?
Leon Todd actually ive went for a gh50l, ill be looking for a cab. I dont know much about them but i was thinking a laney 2x12, what do you think ??
All depends on the speakers. Try to get something with UK made celestions and decent construction and you'll be sorted.
Leon Todd good stuff, ill be looking out ! Thanks a lot man, cant wait to jam this amp out
The comparison is skewed by not matching relative loudness. Most people can't make an objective comparison because the ear will gravitate toward sounds that are louder and therefore think they sound better.
Saying that, the Laney is better because I own one.
well, the Laney is a tighter 800,plus a boost stage for more gain.
Does your Laney have E-34's or 6L6s ?
34's
👍
Volume matching is a bitch with comparisons. I feel a lot of people are saying Laney because it's a hair louder. If you go back and forth but bump the JCM800 section up a tiny touch they're near-identical.
0:40 laney
1:40 jcm
Laney The Best
I miss my gh50L : (
Troy has the 50, i wonder if it's the same one?
Leon Todd maybe lol. Also...I may have a spare Laney badge somewhere...ill see if i can dig it up. Unless ya going the sleeper look
Laney for the win.
LANEY
the JCM is very harsh/thin
I am a Laney GH50L user.
Honestly... i am quite boring with Marshall sound. Too much treble and bass.
Laney much warmer and crunchy...
My favorite gain setting :
Gain 4.5
Dist 9
All eq at 5. Presence 8
Can i play gh 50 l at bedroom volumr and boost it with Distortion pedal... Does the drive knob act as volume as i push it further. Lets say set master volume at 1.5
It is single channel amp.
If you want clean sound, you need to set gain and no drive. Then you can add another dist pedal... or add some gain at level 1-2...
But if you want to know the real performance of your pedal... use only its power. Just set guitar-pedal to return input...
Laney is somewhat more middy. Pretty much it. Frankly, don't see the point of paying for the JCM, as they sound almost same.
laney head on laney cab this is the real thing
it has a digital sound surely because of the sound card and the cabinet : i am sure in real it won't sound like that for sure ! but it sounds good
You're listening to a mic on cab, just like every guitar recording ever. It's very different to an amp in a room.
🤓 LANEY....REALLY NEEDS A TREBLE BOOSTER......TO BEAT OUT THE MARSHALL 🎸🔊
Just my opinion, I definitely prefer the JCM.
the laney seems thinner ,
Laney kills the marshal and n engineering quality and tone imo.
Gawd so many amps took the Marsha to another level Marshall never went to.
Black flag mang
Why is laney is sounding so unclear. Marshall is just perfect for this type of music.
Sounds like a toy amp.
What does that even mean? Have you ever played one?
