    Did you have to bias an internal trim pot as well or just flip the bias switch?

    Thanks for this! Is it just me or did it seem like the bass being turned up full didn't really have much of an effect on the sound? I was hoping for some serious deep tone but it didn't seem to come through. I'm asking because it could just be my shite laptop speakers. I'm trying to decide if this amp would be good for doom/sludge metal?

    • @morellasgeorgios8449

      Just downtune and boost. Then take that piece of shit deep switch and make it a pot and either copy the 5150 or slo depth mod cap values. Then you can kill anything!

      Rubberduck Tech has a really good video on these where he very favourably compares it to a Soldano Hot Rod & Marshall JCM 800 2203. They're ridiculously good amps and are very inexpensive on the used market.

      I have a vh100r and although there is the “bias switch “ like a Mesa rectifier has there is still a bias trim pot inside the amp. Considering this is essentially a single channel version of the vh100r I’d at least consider the thought that the gh100 has something similar if not the same. Best of luck with your Laney. I love my old vh100r and have had it for 15 years and it’s such a sleeper and Marshall killer and has as much if not more gain than a rectifier. I need to try 6l6s in mine. I’ve always loved el34s and wanted to keep that British flavor but since I play 7 and 8 string guitars I’m wondering if it may turn into a wish I did that a long time ago kinda thing.

    Man; this is a great clip of this amp. I have been thinking about picking one up used. Do you think it would be worth it? I am looking at getting some killer metal tones. Paul Gilbert Racer X meets Black Sabbath.

      You wouldn't be disappointed. I'm using one with a torpedo captor and the wall of sound plugin. So many great tones in there! It's a metal amp all the way. Remember to crank it up.

      Paul used a GH100L on his solo stuff and later Racer X albums. I think Get Out of My Yard and Superheroes were recorded with a Laney GH100L. I think you can even find his preferred EQ settings for the amp on some forums.

    Hi, do you know if this amp works with 2 power tubes?

    • @johnparsons441
      @johnparsons441 3 роки тому

      Yes it does, I have this amp, if you remove the tubes one from either end, or the the two centre tubes it is effectively a 50 watt, still loud, but yes it does work

    • @franktriggs
      @franktriggs 3 роки тому +2

      @@johnparsons441 Beware when you do this. When 2 tubes are pulled from a 4 tube amp the output transformer is looking for twice the original impedance. So the 8 ohm speaker out becomes 16 ohm. So plug a 16 ohm speaker cabinet into the 8 ohm socket. Or 8 ohm speaker cabinet into the 4 ohm socket.
      If you forget to do this, the speakers will pull too much current and could blow the output transformer.

  • @furoraguitars

    If you change one cap called c20 in the tone stack this amp will be insanely good. It has 220n cap instead of Marshall's 22n or Splawns 47n, it makes a major difference in EQ for good.

      @@furoraguitars Howdy, it went just fine. Wasn't that drastic of a change, but definitely a tighter bass response akin to a jcm800, nails the early Van Halen sound pretty well. I also removed two 4n7 caps off each channel to tame the high end a bit, it's much more balanced now.

    I have the best sounding GH100L on the planet, period. Not flexing. It just is. I run it through a 1973 Marshall 1932A cab with Celestion G12M 25W 55Hz Creambacks. It can do anything and I love it so much. It's not a stock GH100L and everything has been changed or upgraded in the past. I got it converted to 230W when I emigrated, the toroidal transformer rewound, the input and output transformers have been upgraded, the caps have been upgraded and it's running 6L6GC Black Plates and NOS General Electric 12AX7s. Nothing about this amp is stock, not even the front baffle or covering (it's Rhino liner if you're interested).
    The cab on this amp is vital. Vintage 30s sound dogshit. The 75W Marshall Celestions that come in modern 1960A/B or JCM800/900 Marshall cabs sound dogshit. I've played mine through all manner of Marshalls, Mesa, Fender, H&K, VHT, Peavey/EVH, Laney (both modern and vintage - I had a 69 Supergroup 4x12 with Goodmans, gross), etc, etc. This amp really benefits from the top end roll off and forward bass of the 55Hz 25W Creambacks. Monster sound.
    Anyway, name a mainstream amp and I've probably played it, maybe besides Dumble, Diezel or some rare exotic brands. My Laney just does it for me. Your miles may vary! :)
