Which is ironic because President Lyman wanted to appease the Soviets, while JFK came the closest to nuclear conflict with them than any president. Makes me wonder really why JFK advocated this novel.
J F - What the hell are you talking about??? JFK single-handedly saved the world from nuclear war by secretly negotiating a deal with the Soviet leader!! The Joint Chiefs of Staff wanted a pre-emptive nuclear strike on the Soviet Union (killing hundreds of thousands of innocent lives!), and their plan to invade Cuba would have caused a full blown nuclear war, because the Cuban troops already had authorization to immediately use nuclear missiles in case of an invasion by the US. The fact that you are trying to smear the president of the USA who saved the entire world from nuclear catastrophy is utterly disgusting and shameful!
The fourth day sounds like the death of Dag Hammarskjold, he told JFK that Moise Tshombe was killed. Shortly after this phone call Dag dies in a plane crash.

the multi-blockbuster film duo of Lancaster & Douglas was the 'best' Hollywood has ever seen,,, better that Gable & Tracy , and 'pretty boys' Newman & Redford, who made buddy buddy films. Indeed the latter duo won Oscars for film score and best picture, and they were pretty boys. But for tough grit, it was Lancaster & Douglas. But for 'laughs' Abbott & Costello, Martin & Lewis, and Lemon & Matheau were the best.
Interesting fact: In one scene, Kirk Douglas -- in mock marine uniform as Col. Casey -- walks up to the Pentagon building. The filming was without authorization, but that was legal because the camera and crew were off property. A real uniformed marine happens to open the door and see what he takes for a real officer, so he flashes a salute. Kirk Douglas salutes back. It is captured on film, but producer John Frankenheimer-Joel, aware that the making of this movie is angering military brass and that technically Douglas could be considered impersonating a military officer, cuts the salutes out. You realize it, but most Americans don't have a clue. But in our day it's the communists working inside the deep state -- the media, Hollywood, academia, Democrats in Congress, Rino Republicans, the FBI, and the CIA -- that are attempting to unseat our President. I sometimes wonder how our President has been able to withstand the onslaught against him for this long. I'm not sure if the good guys will win this time.
The young people of today are just horrible and don't care about anything good or anything else from the world of yesterday only what they hear and think today!!!!!
There were two re-makes, one in the 1970s titled "The Enemy Within" and one in the 1990s with Sam Watterson as Jordan Lyman. I agree with Valentena Upton -- neither remake was particularly good. The greatness of the original can't be equaled.
One month before 9 /11, everybody would have said it was too far fetched. One month before The Capitol Riot the same thing. At the time of he JFK killing, the media, and the populace, had Zero Clue what was going on behind the scenes.

Burt Lancaster was really playing not the Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff but General Curtis LeMay of the Air Force who masterminded JFK assassination and obstructed autopsy.
Just some insights gleaned over years of viewing: Find and read the source novel, then appreciate Rod Serling's adaptation that winds the whole thing tighter than a snare drumhead. The direction, cinematography and production design conspiring to keep things suitably claustrophobic throughout. Part of a stellar cast, O'Brien truly earns his Oscar nomination. The possibility that General James Mattoon Scott instead attempts a coup de sifflet. Finally, read up on the Goldwater-Nichols Department of Defense Reorganization Act of October 4, 1986, signed into law by President Ronald Reagan; in particular what that did to the JCS.
Let’s see… The allegation is that president is playing softball with the communists by proposing another agreement with them (the previous ones they never kept their side on, according to Scott). General Scott believes the country has been taken over somehow by “One-Worlders”, like that president.
