As the story goes that Clarke gable advised Gary cooper not to work with Burt Lancaster in "Vera cruz"simply warning cooper that this young man will blow you away from the screen, well i think Lancaster would blow anyone from the screen because he was the most charismatic, energetic with great looks and body stature actor ever to embrace the silver screen and probably thats why he stayed at the top till the end of his absolutely amazing career,May god bless his soul

Impressive list. As a huge Lancaster fan, I agree with those films. Good to see The Swimmer and The Leopard get mentioned. My #1 Lancaster performance is his portrayal of J.J. Hunsecker in Sweet Smell of Success. Just off the charts! He has such a solid resume. Besides the ones already mentioned, I'd add Criss Cross, The Killers, Sorry Wrong Number(his wonderful '40s noir run), the western The Lawman, and the wonderfully offbeat, Local Hero. Great actor, sorely missed!
@@madnickmedia General James Matoon Scott! The toe-to-toe sequence vs. the president of the US (Fredric March, superlative, too) is good enough to make this a list of six great performances.
Great picks! always heard mixed reviews on "the swimmer" so will have to check it out. Also great in "the professionals" (1966) and "l walk alone" (1947)
The best five Lancaster movies to me are 1 Atlantic City, 2 From Here To Eternity, 3 The Leopard, 4 The Train, 5 Run Silent Run Deep. I would have loved to see a film with Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum...

He was making the Leopard in Paris. He flew to Washington to speak at the march on Washington, gave his speech, the took a cab back to the airport and flew immediately back to Paris. I was always impressed by that. I loved watching him - so macho and good lookking.
I'm surprised not to see The Rose Tattoo and Unforgiven not mentioned here. 2 of my favs in the old Drive-In circuit of the fifties. I must have watched The Crimson Pirate 50 times on the black and white tv when I was a kid..
Burt Lancaster was in a class by himself. He had no issue doing his own stunts and left a mark on every film he made. From Lawman to The Professionals to Field of Dreams he was a man’s man and a first class act.
Great picks! I'd also say Brute Force (1947) and Seven Days In May (1964) also feature fantastic performances from Burt. From Here To Eternity (1953) and The Professionals (1966) as well. Thanks for this tribute to Burt Lancaster. He definitely deserves more recognition in modern times, in my opinion. He's quite underrated nowadays and seems to only be known to some people as "The old guy from Field Of Dreams"(although he is great in that, too). Hopefully, your list will open some eyes to what an incredible talent he was. Bona Fide Legend of the classic era.

Excellent choices plus mentioning Sweet Smell of Sucess. Burt Lancaster made so many fine films it is hard to narrow them down to a Top 10 or more. 🤔The Leopard was filmed without dialogue which was to be added later. Lancaster dubs his own voice for the film's American version released in 1963 by 20th Century Fox. Sadly, the Italian version which is the most prevalent today his voice is dubbed by a different actor. 😔
As a long time fan of Lancaster who went to my high school-I cannot leave out his supporting roles in “Judgment at Nuremberg” and “Field of Dreams” and “Vera Cruz” and “The Professionals” with an amazing cast in all

Top 5 Lancaster films or the top 5 Lancaster performances? My 5 favorite Lancaster films are The Crimson Pirate, Separate Tables, The Train, Seven Days In May, and Elmer Gantry. His best performances would probably be The Birdman of Alcatraz, Sweet Smell of Success. Come Back Little Sheba, Elmer Gantry and, just to throw in something different, The Professionals. Lancaster was one of those who entered film acting before method acting took over and made acting more nuanced. As his career went along, he changed his style but yet failed to fully adapt.
A number of actors fell in the transitional period of Hollywood acting styles. Clark Gable came along earlier than Lancaster but he would be an example.
1' crimson pirate , 2' ten tall men , 3' elmer gantry , 4' sweet smell of success , 5' scorpio , 6' vera cruise , 7' the leopard , 8' the train , 9' seven days in may , 10' the young savages
Impossible to distill to 5 given he had such an outstanding filmography nearly his entire career. How do you leave out The Killers with Criss Cross not far behind? The Crimson Pirate? His westerns ( Vera Cruz, The Professionals Ulzana's Raid, and Gunfight at OK Corral), gotta pick one. As a film The Swimmer pales compared to some of these.
Have you all missed The Professionals! Lancaster at his finest and a great western! In my mind, one of the most magnetic actors of all time! Elmer Gantry is a masterpiece!
I will say to the viewer seek out one of Lancaster‘s best films & most unusual characterizations: SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS. This is also a key Hollywood film of the 50s & definitely deserves to be on your list. The other films listed here are all notable achievements as well & THE LEOPARD especially.
