I don't really like the SS Uniform style, its just too much black for my taste (not enough colour accent such as white and red). Nonetheless, i love the video. And looking forward for another video on military uniform style, their history, along with whatever symbolism they represent.
I liked it. Don't know if it's for everyone. I believe all discussions of fashion and style must begin with sociocultural context, and that means history. Why do U.S. residents think cowboy hats look cool, but sombreros look silly? It's the sociocultural context. Most AMCITS don't even know that their most iconic image -- the western cowboy -- is mostly a Mexican invention. I think understanding that context makes fashion and style more interesting and relatable. Everyone knows the swastika was the NAZI logo, but what of the NAZI brand? The NAZI brand was inevitability, ruthless persistence, and invincibility -- if those are your core beliefs and identity elements, then black is your ONLY choice for representing the brand. Camo -- such as our modern Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines wear -- represents ... what? It sure doesn't keep a sniper from whacking you, so why do we do it, and why do we change it so often? What is the U.S. military brand? What is our message? Unlike the NAZI's we no longer project our brand in our uniforms because we don't always want to be the same thing -- sometimes we are peacekeepers, sometimes we are bone-crushers, sometimes we are liberators, and sometimes we are unstoppable destroyers. So where's our brand, now? Not in our uniforms -- that's for sure -- all camo looks the same, at a distance. Our uniforms can no longer promote our brand, because the U.S. brand has become "tactics and technology." The SS was optimized for operations OTHER THAN WAR, and the stylish black uniform, so eloquently speaking to the NAZI brand, gave the SS the power to influence through fear. Fashion is ALWAYS about communication, and we all want our brand to be strength, confidence, honor, and integrity, tempered by generosity, self-sacrifice, and compassion. That is why a Marine makes a good men's style channel host: you already embody the brand which invokes the desired response in high-value women, and which commands the respect of all other men.
The fact they still look good today is a major indication of how good of a design it is when things can go out of fashion within a few years or even months.
Honestly, I think 1930s and 1940s fashion was very stylish in general. I can’t think of a single badly dressed man in the 1930s and 1940s. Women had some very stylish clothes in that time frame as well, but the men were especially handsome.
Two majors things contribute to that: 1. Pride, prior to the counter-culture revolution of the 60's most people took pride in their appearance as dressed as nicely as possible in public 2. No Fatties. Fat people are ugly. No amount of 'body positive' propaganda will change that fact.
@@jacekbojanowicz3828 Don't compare rock time's patch job with swing era's feathers and Disney's era suits. 50s was when fashion basically died and became a commoner thing. You can't compare a stereotypical pinstripe gangster look to anything after that. 50s was when that bland fabricated candy color stuff started coming. When you can hear every single damn video from that time starting with "the average american household" When plastic came and house commodities were big and tv dinner in a microwave was said to beat out a whole kitchen. And everything was round and colored plastic or wood. Disgusting awful time.
I do think the SS uniforms were superb! Probably the black color, definitely the silver accents, the armband added a touch of very distinguishable colors... but also: The boots! The hats! The leather coats! The capes! It all worked very well together.
The young soldiers got severely reprimanded if they did not have all their uniform bits . Even when they had to retreat from the Russians before the horror of the Eastern front

There's a reason George Lucas used the Nazi uniforms as inspiration for the Empire. He even used the term "Stormtroopers" as well. The black, white and red colors used in Star Wars was purposeful and meant to bring the Nazis to mind when you saw them. Even Darth Vader's helmet has influences of the Stahlhelm.
the fact that it's so readily admitted is especially impressive. The fact that the uniform can drag a complement from many unwilling lips simply because it goes too hard to be insulted, even if the people it was worn by were literal monsters, locks it in as the certified look.
100% agree. You know it's the pinnacle of uniform design when even the jewish guys you know will go "Yeah, gotta admit the uniforms were god-tier". TBH, I think we should bring back 30s-40s clothing fashion in general. They had timeless style and class when it came to clothing (not so much with hair styles tho).
@ordinaryopinion4081 doesn't have to be, would be nice to see more men pick no iron slacks and a turtleneck over a hoodie and sweatpants as their "comfort wear".

Honestly, I think the leather these guys wore contributes a lot to their appareance. The high and shiny boots look elegant while the long coats are intimidating but stylish.
I agree, high boots, duck walk in tandem, very intimidating......also very predictable in a recon perspective....would be easy target durring their flamboyant displays......and they were to the s.a. and "basterd" recon and attacks.
My grandpa won one SS Coat in a Card game. Shortly after the war. He didn't trow it away. To good in shape. The Coat is in Our dent. After so many years, the Coat, is still brillant and wonderfull to Look at.
As a historian I’m pleasantly surprised by the accuracy provided by a non historically based UA-cam channel. Usually videos such as this mutilate the historical accuracy or give middle school information. I’m very impressed.
@@Ludwig_Perpenhente well there are inaccuracies in the video like the Waffen-SS being footsoldiers only ..... ignoring the fact of a giant bulk of armored , mechanized , motorized units , artillery pieces and so on .... all direct assets of the SS.
I live in New Mexico. And our state police wear a uniform very similar to this. Right down to the hat boots and belt/straps. They won’t admit to inspiration but you can’t deny they replicated the look. It does make our state police intimidating and taken seriously. @real men real style
@@LAZARUS6179 that’s interesting. Did u know that the “gas” that was a pesticide the American government would spray on Mexicans entering America, to kill skin lice they said, this is in the early 1900s the head of German Nazi propaganda and camps he was inspired by this, and he used that same chemical and concentrated it into a chemical gas that could kill you, that’s why they called them concentration camps, they were killing them with a concentrated version of a American pesticide that was sprayed on Mexican immigrants entering America. Black is indeed powerful. Marine Corps dress blues are stunning, but a General with black trousers instead of blue with the same uniform looks even better.

I have to respectfully disagree. To me, a USMC general with the black tunic and black pants doesn't look as sharp as the other officers with the black tunic and blue pants.
@@miguelcastaneda7236 BOPE in brazil, the guys who invade favelas in Rio wear black too, top brass tried to change it because it was too hot and intimidating but the officers were against it.
Marine Corps, Army or or the NAVY dress slacks look terrible. In order to keep the tradition the US military branches have completely forgone the style that evolves over time. The main poroblem with US military slacks is that they are not even close to being tailored as the Nazis tailored their paints. The wide, even cut on the pants was a style 100 years ago when you could easily mass produce pants for the military and THAT became the tradition, that had no style at all. The bright red line and the bright blue pants just looks atrocious . You can see how much the BDUs have imporoved over time and how slimmer the pants have become, because they become easier to operate in. But dress slacks require no ease of use and therefore have never been improved.
Aesthetics have a profound psychological effect on morale too. It doesnt seem obvious at first that fancy uniforms and symbolism would make a big military or political difference but it does. Just think about how confident you get when you get a fresh hair cut, look in the mirror in a sharp outfit or get a new tattoo. It might give you the confidence to go talk to that girl, or take any risk. We overlook that in the west.
The color Black, when it comes to uniforms, is especially powerful because when worn with military ribbons, it enhances the ribbons ( which are colorful).
Nazi Party, byname of National Socialist German Workers' Party, German Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP), political party of the mass movement known as National Socialism.

I’d say the iconic uniforms are, the Royal Navy around the time of the revolutionary war, the nazi ss uniforms, Vietnam era American uniforms, and then modern us special forces. To me those are iconic uniforms
@@firefightszz I always preferred the SAS and SEAL equipment and uniform style, so badass and every one of their different uniforms have purpose and look great, like the Seal delivery wetsuits, the HALO jump gear, the SAS gas mask and black suit with MP5s (Embassy siege operation, 80s) , the Vietnam era SEAL attire, casual american attire mixed with tactical undertones
One thing that is not mentioned here is that to get into the SS you had to be at least 180cm tall. This obviously added to the whole "master race" mystique and made the uniforms look even more impressive. The irony is that many of the high ranking officers did not actually meet the height requirements of their own elite club, yet demanded this from "lesser" mortals.
As someone swinging by from the historical dress community, I would like to add that across the vast majority of history, it was very difficult to dye fabric black and to ensure the colour didn't fade. Making it extremely expensive, thus only available to the rich and powerful. Eventhough at the time of the nazis it was more accessible, there was still this subconscious association that they where wearing black and thus must be of high status and rich. With synthetic dyes and fast fashion, everything is now easily and cheaply available, so it's easy to forget how costly some things would have been before all of that A source: Medieval fabrics and the use of colour, part 2. @@mansanayanaranjado yes, flaunting their wealth and status is something rich and powerful people like to do, as a matter of fact it was so bad, during some periods of time in some places there where laws that forbade people to "dress above their status". @@Cora.T you mean sumptuary laws. I know. They stole any wealth. The German currency was in the toilet before the war. They were flaunting their theft.
I agree that modern society doesn't understand that certain colors were inherently much more expensive because of using rarer plant, animal(purple) or insect ( orange-red) dyes. Yet there is still a legacy of the cost factor in the preference for certain colors.

I’m a Marine, love my Dress Blues but I believe the Nazi German uniforms are the best looking. Not only the SS, but the classic gray field tunic uniforms that they fought on looked pretty amazing
I cannot separate the uniforms from the actions they represent. The uniform that I admire most is the US Marines olive green dress uniform. That and the US Army WWII period uniform. I'm a buck civilian boomer, and I have some comprehension of the sacrifices made by people wearing those uniforms. They made the western world safe for my soft civilian ass, and my whole generation. Note: I edited out my error about the Marines' Class A uniform.
FYI Himmler DID have military experience just not COMBAT experience. He was in the German army during WWI. It’s usually glossed over by historians and the public because that time of his life wasn’t very notable
He was born in 1900, which makes it easy to know his age, but his time in the military in WWI was limited due to his age and his desire to be an officer. He jumped between service and school and had training as an officer but it was too late in the war. By 18 he was discharged and began to be involved in post war Germany.
"Reverse Propaganda" Just like Leon Trotsky was a Frontline Commander in WW1, which lead Stalin to resent his powerful intellectual platform. Trotsky was referenced by Will Rogers as "I never met a man I didn't like."
I’m a Marine who was issued my Blues at 8th & I, but I gotta say the Allgemeine SS and the Waffen SS dress uniform (black also) are the most striking of all time.I heard one person who was German and a child in the 30s say that they looked at the men in their black uniforms as if they were “knights”.
Just discovered your channel and quite glad I did. Can’t wait to see some more. That being said, I see the schultzstaffel (SS) uniforms as one of if not the most iconic military uniforms of the 20th century. As they seamlessly blend style, class and sophistication with a foreboding sense of terror and ruthlessness. Again, really enjoyed your video. Quite informative stuff. As I too was under the impression that the fashion house Hugo Boss was responsible for the designing of said uniforms prior to having watched your video. Anyways, thanks again and look forward to seeing more of your work.

my grandfather was forced into the Croatian SS as well, he diserted. But he had the blood type tattoo and the Aryan looks. The Croatians were fascist allies of Nazi Germany.
Himmler actually did have Military experience. He was in reserve units during the first world war. His unit was even called to the front, but recalled at the last minute. He continued to serve in reserve status until after the war. Once his time was fulfilled re went back to his family home. His main regret was not ever seeing combat. This was one of the driving forces that lured him to the Nazi Party. Mark Felton has a great video on this subject.
@Pojka Yeah, people are always diminishing the nazis as insecure and over-the-top characters, that always seemed shallow and childish to me. Most young men from all countries involved wanted to seek adventure and fame in the War.

The Germans also created a focus group who's responsibility was to observe and evaluate the attractiveness of uniforms which were being developed for the German soldiers under the Nazi Reich. The evaluators were women, since the uniforms were also to be used for purposes of recruitment from German citizenry. I have worn these German uniforms (Wehrmacht) as a WWII reenactor and understand their appeal as a propaganda tool. They project efficiency and masculinity as part of their design, not only intimidation. The arms are shorter by modern standards. The sleeve cuff terminates at the wrist, not below as in modern suits. Also, the belt line was raised to about the naval. The effect was to make the soldier appear taller that he really was, an image of strength.
That's really interesting, especially with reagard to the fact that the post-war uniform of the "Bundeswehr" (another very un-sexy term) was designed to be utterly ugly, up until this day. from the cut to the colour of the tunics. They look like a caretaker's frock:) Another really sex uniform I find is the officers' uniforms of the British in WW1, but this might be just my personal preference.
GDR uniforms were ugly as well, up to the point of lookin ridiculous, especially the helmets. Never found the russian uniforms really pretty either, which goes for the entire Warsaw Pact factions.
Even if Hugo Boss didn’t officially design their uniforms, the connection to such a historically high fashion brand, it's clear that the design and craftsmanship are there in timeless classic pieces.
Hugo Boss was not the designer his company is just the producer If you are specifically mean the black SS uniform it was designed by Karl Diebitsch, a senior SS officer. He designed the infamous uniform with help from graphic designer Walter Heck and input from Adolf Hitler
Hmm. I’ve never thought about that. The fact that the uniforms were usually worn by fit young men adds to the appeal. And you’re right. When I picture the SS uniforms, I don’t usually picture Himmler, I picture the 6 foot plus, blond haired, blue eyed picture of the ideal Aryan male. The Nazis demonstrate again how they were the masters of propaganda. They trained you to see the SS uniform and immediately associate it with pure Aryanhood. Clever.
SS uniforms/SS style can't be mentioned without discussing the Iron Heart. The REAL SS model was not Himmler but Reinhard Heydrich. The Blonde Beast made EVERY SS uniform.
Small correction: Himmler did have some military experience, he wanted to be an officer and went through some training, but he never saw combat during the war. Awesome video!

As a younger adult, seeing the uniform fit so well and look like a wanted style. I can see how the Uniform would encourage more "enlistment". Just like the marines, in just about every commercial, ad, photo. They always include the Dressed Blues. Drags the eye to "Damn, they're badass and they even dress as such". I believe that's also the reason for the SS uniforms. If that makes sense
I don't know, the Marine uniform just looks tacky and mismatched cause the white cap looks out of place with the black tunic and the blue pants. If they wore jackboots or darker peakcaps and pants then it would look more less tacky.
Something to keep in mind about Germany of that era, is that: 1. Nearly 90% of society wore a uniform of some kind, as every organisation had a separate uniform (Hitler Youth, NS Motor Corps, Police, etc). Even mailmen had a special uniform which looked badass. 2. German society had a huge militaristic ethos. Being in the military was considered the highest honor, above other civilian careers. 3. People were not "invited" to the SS. Before WW2, it was elite organisation which turned away 90% of German men. They had strict educational, physical, and even genetic requirements (proof of German ancestry at least back to 18th century I believe).

But at that era, Hugo Boss were still only textile firm who receive government contract, and not yet enter into high-fashion, which happen much later (i.e. not their design)
I think they're the most stylish uniforms ever, easily #1. The hairstyles were also very nice looking imo. Ralph Fiennes in his SS uniform in Schindler's list looks so freaking handsome, especially in the picture you chose as the thumbnail for this video. The overall style coupled with his incredible acting performance were so effective in creating a stylish and intimidating character that was so easy to hate. Disregarding the fact that the real Amon Goeth was in fact incredibly ugly, it made for such a powerful portrayal of that absolute monster.
@@robd1329 For his awesome portrayal of the "Harry Potter" series's Tom Marvelo Riddle, aka Lord Voldemont, and maybe since then. What will never change are his fantastic ice blue eyes.
What I found striking about these Nazi uniforms is that the way they were designed created a dazzling style that gave officers a level of superiority and respect towards their leader. I always had these flashbacks about their power and it fascinated me about their history.
And Hitler played on the uniform design by deliberately contrasting himself with the personnel around him. The Third Reich had a wide range of awards and decorations and uniform details to show an individual's place and performance, but while the period still had generals and political leaders festooned with awards, Hitler would wear only his second and first class Iron Cross medals, his black wound badge, and the NSDAP party badge.
I don’t find em particularly more stylish than other uniforms of that time. The fact he used a picture of a modern Hollywood playboy and not Adolf Hitler’s or Gobbles or Himler’s in the thumbnail proves how vapid this video essay is. Even if you look at pictures of random Nazi soldiers, their being uniquely "stylish" is very subjective

I was going to say exactly the same! They had the best equipment and were fully motorized. Even in Russia, they were the only ones that had worm clothes for the snow. The Das Reich Panzer Division for example...
Yea lol I thought the same. They definitely had mobilized units. Panzergrenadiers and ss panzer divisions. The waffen ss were also lousy and sloppy in tactics. The wehrmacht kinda looked down on them because they were tactically ignorant and did stupid shit I heard. They didn't have the proper training in combat. Not to mention the wehrmacht didn't approve of the r@pes, the torture, executions. Those immoral war crimes and such. The SS was a separate animal
I appreciate your boldness to separate talent and ability from what those aspects can be exploited for. It takes balls to say Nazis were snappy dressers
Really. I’ve always found it very clear. Nazis we’re stylish af. It’s probably part of what made them so attractive and seductive. That swastika looks dang good on the red flag and those uniforms and peaked military hats must have made the wearer feel legit and important. Even Hitler’s half cut look with the hair and tiny moustache looks pretty good, and then handsome, young looking Ralph Fiennes just looks so suave as Amon Goeth in Schindler’s List. They sure were snappy dressers.
I don't think anyone ever actively denied the fact that Nazis are well dressed. Just cause you're a bad guy and a shit human being doesn't mean your fashion sense are shit as well. I mean look at all those well dressed bad guys in fictions. They be dripping
This Nazi look, and Leni Riefenstahl's visual style were the inspiration for George Lucas's creation of the Empire, and it's stormtroopers in Star Wars.
The Empire stormtroopers’ helmets do resemble the iconic German stalhelm. I’ve always thought calling those soldiers “stormtroopers” was a bit of a misnomer. Stormtroopers are a specialized band of shock troops. These guys were pretty much regular infantry. I suppose calling them stormtroopers has more dramatic effect. I also get a laugh over their body armor. Sure it looks badass but it doesn’t seem to offer much protection. One ding with a peashooter and bang! Another stormtrooper bites the dust.
@@georgelush1998 The empire had a larger Army force. Stormtroopers were essentially the marines for the empire. They only seem common because they fight the protagonists and strongest of the rebellion, which is where the movies, shows and books focus on with few exceptions.
Honestly when the Waffen SS was formed they were equipped with the Heer's "junk". since they were seen as a rival. It wasn't until the war in the east that some of the divisions were upgraded to full panzer units. Like I've stated before I'm going by what my great grandfather told me.
Paw Paw said that whenever they captured a German soldier all muddy and dirty in OD green uniform and camo they would offer him a cigarette or something to eat. Whenever they captured a guy in a sharp black uniform, boots, riding pants and skull and cross bones on his cap they would just shoot him in the head.
Our brains, and this goes to a majority of cultures, associate sharp edges, geometrical patterns, and broad single colors to neatness and symmetry, and symmetry is a major key to understanding our idea of beauty. The lines and broad strokes in the collar also look like they were influenced by the art deco style if not totally imitate it. Art deco is already considered a major aesthetic preference at the time so I think it also contributed to the view of the uniforms being stylish.
@@markthrasher6770 mmm... I dunno it seems 2 me like ur stroking that Asian guys Ego because ur both just awestruck by all those sexy Nazis.... Hard pass 4 me thx
Also note symmetry is desirerble but not to much of it, that's why you see in uniforms (and suits) some elements not be completely geometrical. It has to do with our nature, a geometrical and balanced body gives us a sense of health and strength.. The kind of person you want to have children with, but a completely mirrored on both sides body/face it's unnatural and almost scary,. After all we're just super evolved monkeys

I’m into it
I don't really like the SS Uniform style, its just too much black for my taste (not enough colour accent such as white and red).

Two majors things contribute to that:

There's a reason George Lucas used the Nazi uniforms as inspiration for the Empire. He even used the term "Stormtroopers" as well. The black, white and red colors used in Star Wars was purposeful and meant to bring the Nazis to mind when you saw them. Even Darth Vader's helmet has influences of the Stahlhelm.

With synthetic dyes and fast fashion, everything is now easily and cheaply available, so it's easy to forget how costly some things would have been before all of that

Himmler actually did have Military experience. He was in reserve units during the first world war. His unit was even called to the front, but recalled at the last minute.

Something to keep in mind about Germany of that era, is that:

The Third Reich had a wide range of awards and decorations and uniform details to show an individual's place and performance, but while the period still had generals and political leaders festooned with awards, Hitler would wear only his second and first class Iron Cross medals, his black wound badge, and the NSDAP party badge.

I don't think anyone ever actively denied the fact that Nazis are well dressed. Just cause you're a bad guy and a shit human being doesn't mean your fashion sense are shit as well. I mean look at all those well dressed bad guys in fictions. They be dripping
I was gonna say that
@@topdog5252 Yes I always thought they had the best looking uniforms ever.
The silver belts and the silver / iron colors on the black I think makes it so good. That contrast is so damn good
This Nazi look, and Leni Riefenstahl's visual style were the inspiration for George Lucas's creation of the Empire, and it's stormtroopers in Star Wars.
@@georgelush1998 The Emire in star wars is the "Empire" - The British Empire. But not many people get it.
Funfact: The heavy Blasters of the Stormtrooper are old MG34s
@@georgelush1998 The empire had a larger Army force. Stormtroopers were essentially the marines for the empire. They only seem common because they fight the protagonists and strongest of the rebellion, which is where the movies, shows and books focus on with few exceptions.
They're basically space nazis soo
"They didn't have tanks...." So you've never heard of the SS Panzer Divisions? They had THOUSANDS of tanks. And they were the elite.
Don't take serious on UA-camr, man.
@@TheBalibull ofc you shouldn't expect him to be a history prof. But that was really a big mistake
Must need a true affectionado from Bitchute to do the passionate research required on that subject, Haha.
Well he's a fashion boi :3 not a history UA-camr. We can forgive him for his lack of knowledge on this :3
Honestly when the Waffen SS was formed they were equipped with the Heer's "junk". since they were seen as a rival. It wasn't until the war in the east that some of the divisions were upgraded to full panzer units.
Like I've stated before I'm going by what my great grandfather told me.
The German Military Uniforms are some of the best designed of any Uniform ever designed, although many others are very good Military designs.

Hugo Boss design 👌
Mexican military uniforms look really cool and similar. Check out their parade in China they look so badass
Putting general Goeth from schindlers list as the thumbnail was such a good move.
The Uniform is very Sharp and most memorable in military history.

Ps
British Redcoats called.
@@TheGuitarReb that’s good to hear, after all monsters need to be extinguished from this world to make it a far better place for everyone.
It’s definitely one of the more memorable ones, however the Roman battle uniforms were by far more memorable and perhaps even more intimidating.
Would be interesting to see you analyze fashion from movies like The Godfather, goodfellas etc.
Goodfellas collars, wtf was that all about?!
The Gentleman's Gazette has had that as a topic.
@@jmbpinto73 that was the first thing I noticed about the gangsters in that film. They’re so fucking large pointy and so tight they look comical
Your probably thinking of detachable collars , they’re al over the Peaky Blinders tv show too
Interesting
Our brains, and this goes to a majority of cultures, associate sharp edges, geometrical patterns, and broad single colors to neatness and symmetry, and symmetry is a major key to understanding our idea of beauty. The lines and broad strokes in the collar also look like they were influenced by the art deco style if not totally imitate it. Art deco is already considered a major aesthetic preference at the time so I think it also contributed to the view of the uniforms being stylish.
It's an aesthetic and concept the world owes to Asian art!!
@@markthrasher6770 mmm... I dunno it seems 2 me like ur stroking that Asian guys Ego because ur both just awestruck by all those sexy Nazis.... Hard pass 4 me thx
yes, now we discussing design. Thank you
Sharp edges, black...equals power and masculinity.
