Reign Over Me - Charlie's Breakdown and Confrontation

- An underrated film of Adam Sandler's career.
"When the Twin Towers went down on that fateful morning in 2001, Charlie Fineman (Sandler) lost everything important in his life. Five years have passed since Charlie's wife and daughters died, and now the once-successful and sociable man has become a withdrawn shadow of his former self." - Розваги
'I get that you're in pain, but you got each other. You got each other.'... This is my favorite line in cinema. It's so much worse to be sad and alone than to be sad and with at least one other someone.
But he didn’t HAVE to be alone, they all could’ve had each other & that was their point.
@negtype13 well they didn't respect his wishes. They wanted to bring up his wife and daughters which obviously was a trigger for him.
@@negtype13having people that care and love you is definitely supportive but not in the same way a significant other is. They each still had their person while he was robbed of his and his three daughters. It's not up for one person to tell another how to grieve. We just all get through grief in our own way in our own time.
@@briankinyon2043
Oh I completely agree!
I was just stating that while he was choosing to be alone, their point was he didn’t have to be.
Even though they didn’t get your point.
I prefer being alone. People are different
"I don't know how they can't see it, he's just got a broken heart, it's so broken his poor heart" gets me every single time I watch it. Shit makes me tear up
The in-laws are acting in a way where they resent that Charlie can't mourn with them and are angry at his pretending their daughter didn't exist as well as hurting at how broken he is. What a mess!
That's only what they perceive. They have no idea exactly what Charlie's fighting on the inside because he doesn't tell them why he doesn't speak or try to reminisce. The whole movie is about his inability to face the truama and it culminates into him finally being able to talk to them and tell them exactly why he doesn't need to mourn the way they do or with them. It's not an easy solution and divisive but it's him finally taking a step back towards the light.
@@ShaDHP23 I totally get his perspective. It's because we get to see it and his music throughout is identifying his inner turmoil. But the in-laws can't see it. They feel robbed of another person they love.
@@Oddbisket fair enough.
@@ShaDHP23 Beautifully described.
@@ShaDHP23 its really messed up imo to try and force someone to grieve in your way
Although brief, Donald Sutherland was perfect for the judge.
Absolutely
Played it perfect. He's a judge recognizing that this is a family issue and shouldn't even be in front of him.
@@stephengrigg5988If I was a judge, I'd have the same opinion of a similar case in real life.
@@thomasshort1784 Well, he's had experience with traumatized and broken families. Look at Ordinary People. Also, Mrs. Templeman was in Prince of Tides, also a with a broken traumatized family. Perfect casting for a movie like this.
Trauma does crazy things to your head, I still see my abusers face in some of the people on the street, causes flashes, it’s just a constant reminder, and can also tell you from experience dealing with it alone is the worst thing to happen to me. Take care of your loved ones
This was the first movie that dealt with the emotional aftermath of 9/11 in an intimate and personal way. Some folks weren't ready for such an emotional movie to star Adam Sandler, but this is some of his finest work.
I loved him in this film and my heart truly broke for the character.
I watched it on an off chance flipping through channels and man it floored me. Adam was amazing in it
When Sandler does drama it is just superb. The movie is great
This is a very underrated Sandler movie. Often forgotten about, but it was an incredible movie!
That lawyer sliding the photo infront if adam sandkers character was a real slime ball for that.
Sucks how people like him actually exsist
That was a low move!! He should be disbarred for that.
In my country they use as a trump card just to instigate them
The German Shepard line made me laugh so unexpectedly. That’s the best part about having an all time great comedian as a lead in a drama. When there’s time for a joke they fucking nail it even if you’re all choked up you still laugh.
It’s funny in a sad way
I felt it on a personal level and so that’s the part where I broke down 😢 I couldn’t emotionally handle that scene, especially once that hit my ears.
When he kisses her on the cheek..... man. Death causes so many feelings that wind up beung misinterpreted.
It's so insane that a person can suffer this type of loss, this type of burden and pain, and be expected to mend as everyone else does,as everyone who hasn't suffered as he does be expected to move on as everyone else does...
I love how when he goes and talks to his in-laws
It’s not anger in his voice
He’s not mad
He’s destroyed
He has no room for anger or hatred or anything other then pure pain
He can’t be mad at them
But he lets them know the truth, with no resentment
Even how he stands
He’s desperate
But not intimidating
Just
A dead man walking
"I look at a German Shepherd I see a god damn poodle!" That's one of the most saddest, and funniest lines I've ever heard.
“Our” god damn poodle, in one scene he says their family dog is a poodle that’s named Spider and that his family took him with them onto the plane.
“If you pull that crap again, I will have hardened inmates using you as a dress-up doll.”
The lawyer and the parents both. That was beyond fucked up. No remorse at all for the three of them, they should all burn.
No I feel bad for the parents. After all it was their daughter that they were grieving as well.
Were they insensitive to Charlie’s method of coping? Yes but from what I seen from the film they didn’t exactly seem malicious. They just misunderstood Charlie’s way of grieving because they too were grieving.
Grief makes you do stupid things. Especially when it seems like the closest thing to that person you lost doesn’t seem to care or want to grieve in the same way. It doesn’t make what they did right but I don’t blame them.
The lawyer on the other hand is a prick who openly weaponised a man’s crippling guilt and grief to make him look psychotic just to win a fucking case. He did this shit for a paycheque and nothing more. That man deserves no sympathy.
The parents wanted to be a part of Charlie's life
"They should all burn." Listen to yourself. That's a terrible statement. Horrific. WTF are you thinking? Is that your answer, if somebody acts out in pain, just burn them? The lawyer, meh, but the parents? Really? That's f****d up.
Thats harsh
They shouldnt burn
@@matthewmason7792 Agreed, I wanted to reach into the screen and slap the shike out of the young lawyer guy.
One of his best movies hardly anyone ever talks about... this one... this one is my favorite.
Yeah, everyone gives Sandler props for Punch Drunk Love and Uncut Gems. He doesn't get nearly enough recognition for this. His performance is superb.
Movie isn't that great.
@@nikolaimyhre1187what brought you here to this clip then?
I went through a situation where something happened and for first 2 weeks was in denial like it never happened and then one morning it set in life was never gonna be the same, and inside I snapped and I couldn’t eat, didn’t wanna think, watch tv, see other people that made me think of the person, because things would make me think of the person. I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t just get over it. I would cry and I couldn’t sleep. I’d wake up in middle of night and cry. Was a deep anxiety filled depression. It sent me down a darker path cause I didn’t know how or where to go to get help. So this movie I understand this movie on another level. And I have more better days than bad now, but took a long time
@@Itsmy2cent ... I am so sorry you went through that... when my mom died... a part of me died as well... I had realized she was my motivation for trying every day... I had to learn to do things for myself... still trying to learn.... .hugs.
If Adam Sandler wants me to cry I'm gonna cry.he is such a good actor
Seeing him act I can feel the aching sorrow and hollowness in my chest from that loss.
The rising anxiety throughout the scene was incredible.
I haven’t watched the movie but watching this clip is enough for me to bawl into tears
You and me both man
this made me laugh he just started singing
Sssooo...Until the last couple years I never cared for Adam Sandler's entertainment style. Never really cared for his stand-up. But then, on a whim, I watched, "Fifty First dates". I was blown away by his skills as an actor. Then I watched, "The Cobbler"; excellent movie. "Pixels" was awesome! and a couple others. This clip is all I have seen of, "Reign Over Me", and once again, I am blown away at Sandler's intuitiveness and skill. As he confronts the Templeton's, the body language alone is absolutely amazing. The vulnerability, and brokenness before he even says a word is absolutely astounding! Having lost two sons, a 13 year old, and later and adult, I understand the raw, visceral grief expressed. I now have to see this movie!
Oh man, when he approaches his in laws at the end, that scene makes me choke up
This movie made me tear up when it originally came out. The clip still gets me. It is one of the best movies he ever made that no one talks about because it isn’t a comedy.
I think it is his best work. He was incredible in this. This is also maybe the saddest movie I have ever seen but, also one of my favorites.
This is why Pam doesn’t like you, Ryan.
Being in pain, alone. Is the worst thing to emotionally and mentally deal with. You have no one to lean on. Truly, unapologetically, able to be vulnerable and hurt with them.
You don't have any shoreline or anything to push towards.
Movie captures it so damn well.
Sandler should have won every award for this movie
He’s never even been nominated not even for this or Uncut Gems
I find it funny to see Ted Raimi in this knowing that the same year he was also in Spiderman 3
Adam Sandler’s greatest performance! I don’t know if a movie has ever made me cry harder.
Donald Sutherland is always a W, From Oddballs to President Snow and any other roles he’s done he is an amazing actor
"Don't bring sugarman"😂😂 I have never laughed so hard right before I cry. The way he explains he sees their faces in other people is so heart breaking and moving
Ok, Adam and writer(s) did an amazing job at showing us heartbreak. 😢😢😢😢 I am a cryer too.😭😭😭😭
The only thing he saw in that picture was his family burning alive. Sandler should've gotten an Oscar
This is my favorite movie of all time, I ball like a baby every time I watch it.
Everyone laughing at the "German Shepherd" quote, but I keep giggling at the 4:05 "First off, you ever pull crap like that in my court again, I will have hardened inmates use you as a dress-up doll". Donald Sutherland managed to deliver that with such sincerity as well. Great stuff.
The in laws are such pieces of garbage. Is it really so hard to understand he's so destroyed that he just doesn't want to deal with the loss?
How have I never heard about this movie? No previews, nothing. Wow
It's been a favorite of mine for years. It's incredibly underappreciated as it is a great movie and the cast (Don Cheadle, Adam Sandler, Liv Tyler, Saffron Burrows, Jada Pinkett, etc.) are each perfect for their roles. It's not just sad, there are many parts that crack me up every time.
It did quite poorly in the box office, $22 mil on a $20 mil budget. I think the distributors didn’t know how to handle the movie in all honesty. This was Adam Sandler’s first fully dramatic role when he was primarily known for stuff like Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison at the time. He’d done stuff like Punch Drunk Love but that still had comedy elements whereas this was way more bleak and emotionally charged. I genuinely think people just weren’t ready for it. If the movie was made today, it would’ve likely done way better thanks to stuff like Uncut Gems proving he was perfectly capable of handling a dramatic film as the leading man.
People don't take the time to understand the pain some people are experiencing, they are right beside you, the Judge said it
He's going through something Profound,
In tears 😭 I understand 😅
Heartbreaking film that just was wonderfully done .
Funny to hear Melinda Dillon get so passionate about a lamp…
It was not just a lamp. It was a major award. From Italy.
They had to have done that on purpose
I loved the scene from the judge's chambers, the judge told the DA that he made a big mistake in court put him in his place for sure
Doesn't Charlie say he pretended to be asleep while his family was leaving for the airport? I think about that quite often and I never let my wife leave for work without saying good-bye and I love you.
You think it's best for someone to express their feelings. But it isn't. Their pain will be a lot worse than anyone can ever imagine. Will they be lost forever. Clearly yes. But it isn't up to relatives to fix them. They can only fix themselves. And only they are allowed to let people in.
4:56 - 5:36 I'd trust Donald's judgement there; he's had experience with traumatized families and loss of loved ones.
(Ordinary People)
Also Don't Look Now
Extremely sad 😢 scene
It is clear this man is going through it and grieiving. People are so egotistical that they want you to react how they would. Thats not how it works. People think they own the copyright to emotions. I haven't watched the movie yet and its obvious he's broken.
This is sandlers best performance ever. He should have got an Oscar for this.
This is a very deep, emotional and intimate scene. Well fuking done Adam. Great Job.
This is such a good movie
Supposedly, this movie was based off an actual Dentist who Really lost his family on 9/11. But this movie…Reign Over Me…This was a hard movie and it’s the only one where Adam Sandler played an Emotional Role…I mean, not even Spaceman, which dropped a few weeks ago on Netflix could top it.
Adam Sandler had a few dramatic rolls this was just his best one
I agree with more serious roles from him. But what no one else mentions is this guy has an amazing voice and should also do more serious music. His feature with Deftones is also quite amazing.
Mrs Templeman aka… Ralphies mom in Christmas story
An amazing movie
Agreed
I love Adam Sandler's movies believe it or not. I've gotten a lot of laughter and fun from them and however I can laugh makes my life better. This movie was hard to watch but imo it's a masterpiece. It shows a completely different side of AS and it's brilliant and beautiful. "Don't bring Sugarman."
The lawyer is purposefully triggering Sandler’s character
The parents only wanted THERE SIDE OF GRIEF, not his. They harassed him, but all they wanted was for him to break down and be hospitalized... Its like they NEEDED to see how fked up this made him and the parents are happy with it? They were selfish pos in this movie..
It’s actually THEIR not THERE- just so you know. You’re an adult and you should know this.

He sees them everywhere he goes… what a tortured soul.
The last 60 sec😢
The use of Jackson Browne really fits.
God Damn!!! I'm tired of hearing Sandler is a comedic actor... Guy is gold in this!!!
How the fuck didn't Adam Sandler get an Oscar for that performance ffs?
I don't understand what they would expect from Charlie.. I don't understand how they can't understand that he lost his whole entire family that day, but they still got each other. Why would the parents be so dumb as to wonder what's wrong with him? Nobody just gets over losing their entire family. That's why he shut down! Then they got the nerve to browbeat him for it? You're so stupid. If you don't go to Cancun for a week or something and get over it...
A LAMP????
The parents should have supported him rather than scolding him.
Everything he said to his parents should have been enough for them to leave Charlie the hell alone. He faces life changing trauma, and they want to put him away for it? What kinda crap is that???
so they torture him in the court, and the judge punishes him?
It made me so mad too. This is a perfect example of narcissistic abuse.

Sandler's wigs are truly terrible in every film.
Appreciate continuity
The plot of this movie makes zero sense. His in-laws are upset that he doesn't want to talk to them about his family that died in 9-11...So they sue him......
average American argument
Well it's deeper than that.
Charlie has ptsd and crippling depression from the events of 9/11. To escape this profound pain, he runs away from the memories of his family and their deaths. He doesn't talk about them, he doesn't want to acknowledge their existence. It hurts too bad. He drowns himself in things like video games, food, and music to drown out the pain and ignores everything else. Nothing is enough, so he attempts suicide by cop by pointing his wife's empty gun at a cab driver in hopes of being shot by the cops. This doesn't work, and Charlie gets put in psychiatric care. His in-laws are fighting in court to keep Charlie there permanently, resulting in this scene.
of course they had a poodle
so not cool man
I thought they wanted to get him help because of his violent episodes?
Oscar bait. It tried.
gotta say, Adam has made alot of awful movies. but when the dude wants to act, boy howdy he can compete with the greats
