  • An underrated film of Adam Sandler's career.
"When the Twin Towers went down on that fateful morning in 2001, Charlie Fineman (Sandler) lost everything important in his life. Five years have passed since Charlie's wife and daughters died, and now the once-successful and sociable man has become a withdrawn shadow of his former self."

Were they insensitive to Charlie’s method of coping? Yes but from what I seen from the film they didn’t exactly seem malicious. They just misunderstood Charlie’s way of grieving because they too were grieving.
Grief makes you do stupid things. Especially when it seems like the closest thing to that person you lost doesn’t seem to care or want to grieve in the same way. It doesn’t make what they did right but I don’t blame them.

Then that world trade center movie with Nic Cage that also felt a little gross. I never got that "exploitative" vibe from this movie. I think they had a story about dealing with grief that they genuinely wanted to tell and that's why the 9/11 aspect comes off a lot more respectful and not like it was shoe-horned in for some cheap sympathy points.

It did quite poorly in the box office, $22 mil on a $20 mil budget. I think the distributors didn’t know how to handle the movie in all honesty. This was Adam Sandler’s first fully dramatic role when he was primarily known for stuff like Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison at the time. He’d done stuff like Punch Drunk Love but that still had comedy elements whereas this was way more bleak and emotionally charged. I genuinely think people just weren’t ready for it. If the movie was made today, it would’ve likely done way better thanks to stuff like Uncut Gems proving he was perfectly capable of handling a dramatic film as the leading man.

You’re correct, he did that because he and his wife had an argument about the kitchen remodel and he didn’t want to do it all over again. That’s also the reason why he continues to remodel the kitchen time and time again, because he had no idea what his wife and the girls would have wanted.

Remove the traumatized person from what is the source of the trauma - sounds simple to me , and to most. . That's the first step, believe me , do not expect any progress until that is accomplished. The experience of trauma has taught me that much , funny to my observers , my "handlers ", that message is lost .

I love this movie but there is literally no way this premise would happen in real life. It seems as if the in-laws purposely interrupted this mans life, where he was coping with life the way he could, to put him through hell because he wasn't grieving the way they wanted him to. It's just an insane premise to have people from the ordinary walks of life determine another persons freedom when there is no grounds for it other than the difference in the grieving process.
