      honestly, maybe he doesn't. remember, he's an airbender and he grew up with airbenders. it possible that he's never been around people who aren't airbenders long enough to really understand things like "if someone gets thrown off a cliff they can't airbend to slow their fall" aang is 12, few 12 year olds fully understand how the world works, and its fully possible that aang hasn't really grasped the concept that people die if they fall from too high a drop or get too cold. because airbenders also could control the air temperature around themselves so they never got too cold or too hot and like waterbenders, could dry themselves off easily should they become wet.

    • @abiean222
      @abiean222 8 місяців тому +55

      @@DavidSonofDavid i'm pretty sure that non-benders didn't go to the air temples. but the thing is, we are making assumptions, and one of those assumptions is that people told aang that falling from a great height will kill you. i wonder if aang's non-airbender friends even considered that aang didn't know that. and again, aang grew up in the air temples surrounded by airbenders, because everyone in the air temples was an airbender. the thing about growing up with things is, you think its normal. many people have given testaments where they say that they thought that everyone did things a certain way, and it wasn't until they grew up and moved away from that environment that they learned that their upbringing wasn't universal.
      if no one thought to tell aang that people die from falling from great heights because they assumed that the monks taught him that, and all aang knew was that people can survive getting thrown off of cliffs, why would he question that? yes he is out in the world, but he is still a kid - kids don't question reality like an adult does.

    • @wickedblade4751
      @wickedblade4751 8 місяців тому +59

      @abiean222 dude that's a pretty weak argument as you yourself are also making assumptions. First off Aang isn't an idiot and very aware that non-benders/other bending types have different limitations than his own. Had he not ever left the temple I could maybe see where you are coming from but he was pretty well traveled (well enough to understand physics are different for him) prior to the show. There is literally no way that even as a 12 year old he didn't know yeeting people off cliffs killed them as we've seen plenty of times in the show where he rescued falling people. Also explain how he isn't aware that dumping an avalanche of snow on people kills them too either by wait or suffocation. We've just scene so much evidence of Aangs familiarity with non-air benders for this to be something he is unaware of.
      It's simply inconsistent writing brought on by the need to have a moral/pg ending for the show. As with the other situations while his actions most definitely resulted in deaths they were assumed and never exactly "on screen deaths" like Ozai's would need to have been.

    That's why the scene where Aang kills the buzzard wasp in the desert is so important, because it's the first time Aang *CONSCIOUSLY* takes a life (not in avatar state) and even more important because it was completely unnecessary. Momo was already free, but he still went back in an act of rage and killed it just because he was so triggered by the potential of losing Momo - his last physical connection to his culture since Appa was already stolen at this point. It's such a great moment of character development for Aang and gives him levels. That was Aang at literal rock bottom.

    I believe that Aang's denial is a coping mechanism. He was supposed to be the Avatar first and an Airbender second but he wasn't mature enough to understand the weight of his Avatarhood when he was told and so acted rashly and never really got to adjust.
    The first season alone is mostly about him taking long detours on his journey as a means of avoiding going north where his freedom as a nomad would end and he'd have to fully commit to his waterbending lessons.

    Aang gets a pass for the bodies littering the Northern Water Tribe and the sea bed out front since not only was he not in control of the avatar state, but was being directed by the Ocean Spirit.
    The writers may not have been thinking about the avalancheS at the Northern Air temple, but that would indeed have a high probability of killing people under realistic physics.
    Most writers treat getting thrown into the water as fine, but that was possibly high enough to hurt, and he was wearing armor that would pull him down.
    The sand skimmer was not occupied when it was smashed, though that did seem to be intent to cause at least medium bodily harm.
    Aang did straight up kill that buzzard wasp, which wouldn't be a big deal if he didn't make a big deal about sanctity of all life.

    For anyone still holding out hope that literally all of these people survive: what really matters is whether he could have killed someone. His whole goal is to never take a life, and so doing something that puts someone in a position where they could reasonably die is against that rule. And even for the ones in the Avatar state when Aang didn’t have full control, he would still need to address that his lack of control got people killed, and that blood is still on his hands whether he meant to do it or not.

And even then, I think you could make a convincing case for a difference between "I've defended myself and in the process possibly killed someone" vs. "I am willing to set out with the explicit intention of killing someone" (the thing he has trouble with in the finale).
