Actually he would learn her name by the time he joined the group. Toph is the first person whose opinion Aang asks after he tells Zuko he'll let him join if his friends agree. When he turns to her, he starts by addressing her with her name. And Zuko's standing right there. I don't know if it's the first time he hears it though, so now I've just found an excuse to rewatch the whole show again :)
It's believe it's true actually. I dont think he knew ANY of their names until he heard someone else address them by it (Based on clips ove seen and the little bit of episode script readings I've done when I had this exact statement to prove to a friend). Like, for example, when he had the conversation about Katara hating him with Sokka, he didn't say her name until he heard Sokka say it; only saying "your sister". He'd only ever say things like "the avatar", "the bison", "your sister" etc etc. Almost as if he knows that *eventually* someone will say a name and he doesn't have to go through experiencing how awkward it is chasing after people for about a year and not knowing their actual names despite them knowing his. And when he introduced himself to the gang with his name when he was trying to convince them to let him help Aang, I'm convinced that he made sure to give his name to try in it and facilitate "formal greetings" and have them give him their names from the beginning so he wouldn't have to play catch-up later. But it didn't work. It's cute of him to be honest

As much shit as everyone gives katara for that, hands are softer and more sensitive then feet meaning kataras burn would've felt way worse then tophs
I never realized it before, but when Zuko accidentally burns Toph's feet, she crawls with her palms face-down, just like how the moles taught her. She isn't deprived of her senses when she can't use her feet, she simply has to put her hands on the ground.

Yes, when out feet get hurt and we don't have any walking stick or friends to help us...we would crawl too, BUT Toph need to see to crawl, and she can only see by sensing the earth...which she can't do unless she get down like that since her feet got burned
Probably really "fuzzy" since she doesn't use her hands that way often, and the nerves in someone's feet are more sensitive than the nerves in someone's hands.

At 2:27 I love how Zuko lowers his hood as a sign of trust and interest even though Toph can't see it. It's beautiful

I love the animation in that part, kept on repeating it. Just the way his hair bounces up as he removes his hood and the genuine happiness on his face, I found it very satisfying for some reason

To give him some credit, he had a weird ass childhood. He was raised in the Imperialist Fire Nation royal family and was surrounded by their crazy rhetoric, with the only voices of reason being his mother and Iroh. And his mother is implied to be killed off when he was just a child. He didn't really know love or compassion or really how to be a sane human being, so when he was finally burned and disowned, all he knew was "Win back my father's appreciation."
However, it was through Iroh's presence and wisdom that he was finally instilled with actually good values, and slowly but surely realized that he didn't want to be part of the imperial fire nation family. Though, because he didn't really know how to react or feel other than angry and sad, he couldn't fully shed that part of himself. It was only when he finally fully accepted he wanted to be on Aangs side that his angry outside that he was using to mask his insecurites fell away completely, completely exposing his insecure and broken inside.

Ok but when Zuko found out that Toph is blind and sees with her feet, imagine the heart attack he must've had realizing that when she came to talk to him peacefully, he lashed out and accidentally _burned her eyes._ Imagine what that must've done to him after three years of never wanting to be like his father, who lashed out and purposefully burned Zuko's eye.

to be fair its not quite the same it was a residual burn that didn't come in like full direct contact. Shit hurts and leaves burns but it is not the same as purposeful constant burning to the eye to leave permanent scaring.

It is more a very serious incident, that brought even more character developement to him, since the results were still somebody being hurt and that feeling must have been so bad for him during this time. That is why his speech after about it, is so important.
And hes still comparing it to a completely different action.
Zukos action was an act of self defense because for all he knows Toph could've instead been a fire nation soldier sent to kill him. He made enemies with the fire lord. And he was already enemies with the avatar. And he had betrayed and abandoned Iroh , In that moment he had no allies. And even with that defensive instinct the fire didn't hit her, the heat from it being so close however did leave burns.
In contrast the situation the original post is comparing this scene to , is Fire Lord Ozai purposefully calling out his son to a fire duel because he said that they shouldn't sacrifice their soldiers needlessly. And when Zuko refused to fight his father, his father burned his face consistently. It was dead on and it wasn't just one burst of fire then done, it was constant burning to the face that left permanent scarring.
Yes Zuko felt bad because he felt like he should be more careful with his fire bending because its dangerous. Not necessarily because of what Ozai did to him.
What Ozai did to him and what Zuko did to Toph are clear differences between intended harm and instinctual self defense.

I never said Tophs reaction was wrong , just that Zukos action from his perspective in self defense of potential fire nation soldiers sent to kill him.

The fact that she can literally tell if a person's lying from their Heart beat still amazes me.
There are actually certain physiological changes the body undergoes when it's owner consciously lies (unless they're a skilled, near psychological liar; see Azula)... namely, the heartbeat elevates. She can sense the liar's heartbeat going up through their vibrations.

For those wondering why Toph never went on a life-changing field trip with Zuko, I think it's because she didn't need to.
The purpose of Zuko's adventures with each of the Gaang wasn't just to bond with the characters, but, in a way, to prove himself further.
He and Aang learn the true meaning of fire and by the end of the episode, he is ready to be a proper teacher to the Avatar. And while you could say that Aang already was fine with him in the group, we get a little interesting detail that makes his redemption that more significant. Zuko is Prince of the Fire Nation and the great-grandson of Firelord Sozin, both the causes of the 100-year war. Ran and Shaw could have easily rejected him because of his lineage. But he has proved, on some level, that his redemption is sincere and he really is a member of Team Avatar.
Sokka was more eager than Katara for Zuko to join the group, even if it was just to defeat Ozai, at first. Zuko travels with Sokka to the Boiling Rock to help rescue Hakoda. He and Sokka bonding over their girlfriends is everything and it's interesting seeing them finally interact in a positive way. Zuko proves that he'll stand by Sokka when it isn't certain that they'll be able to accomplish their mission. His time with Sokka also helped him to start repairing things with Suki! Zuko and Sokka showcase their ability to work together as a team.
Katara was going to be difficult to win over. She had trusted him once and he stabbed her in the back along with Iroh. What could he ever do to at least TRY to show her that he's here to help, even if she's still cautious of him? By helping her find the man that killed her mother years ago. During their time together, Katara opens up to him about her mother and Zuko expresses his admiration of Katara's mother. Zuko also finally gets to witness how powerful Katara REALLY is. Those threatening words were probably blaring in his head when she blood bent the replacement of her mother's killer and turned the rain into icicle shards. And at the end of the episode, she claims that while she can't forgive the man who killed her mom, she can forgive Zuko. This episode may show that revenge is not always the necessary way to handle things, but it's an important milestone in Zuko and Katara's (platonic) relationship.
These field trips are all used for Zuko to strengthen his friendship with the rest of the group.
It would make sense that he and Toph never got their own field trip because they didn't need one.
Toph was one of the first to accept Zuko when he tried to join the group and the only one who argued for his acceptance. Even after he burns her feet, she's still fine with him joining the group, and even seems to look forward to it. When Zuko loses his firebending, she's the one coming up with helpful solutions while Sokka and Katara make fun of him. She also probably understands his inner turmoil due to the conversation she had with Iroh. And she might be more empathetic to the fact that he grew up with a crappy parent because she had them too.

- Aang and Zuko had a distorted view about fire in general
- Sokka was the opposite of Zuko, reuniting with his father and girlfriend while Zuko was rejecting them, working against his father and giving Mai a reason to breakup with him
- Katara and Zuko lost their mothers

Plus, don't forget, Toph never actually fought Zuko. Their only previous meeting was when they teamed up on Azula one time, because by the time she joined the Gaang, Zuko had lost his ship and had been declared a fugitive, and couldn't actively hunt them anymore. As a result, Toph had every reason to view Zuko's request to join the team without her opinion being coloured by the bad blood Zuko had with everyone else, and this means that they didn't really need an episode where he proves himself to her.

Toph can't see Zuko's scar, same way she can't see paintings on a canvas.
She can feel his every heartbeats though, using her seismic sense, she can hear his voice and perceive his personality. Her sense of hearing is also developed far beyond normal. However, she sure as hell is blind to his scar and the details of his face. She's blind like that.
I like the moment at 1:07 when Zuko talks about “not burning people unintentionally” and Aang has the moment of clarity from his training in season 1, and I believe it was at that moment he chose to have Zuko be his teacher. Very nice details

1:55 Their whole talk at the theater is great, but I love what they conveyed with Toph's body language regarding her character. At first she's just lounging on the wall all relaxed because she is having fun. But as Zuko gets more serious, she first uncrosses her arms and puts her hands on the wall. And when Zuko says "[Iroh] was there for me", she puts her other foot down on the ground. This isn't just a gesture to show that she's taking him seriously, she *sees* with her hands and feet, therefore extending her field of vision through her seismic sense. And when she sits down, she puts her palms on the ground because her feet don't touch it. She is making sure that she doesn't just listen to Zuko with her ears, but with all of her senses. Putting her feet down is her version of prolongued eye-contact.
The animators really knew how to make these characters feel like real people.

In this scene also they showed how her feet are healing too, which shows how she trusted him again after his bending hurt her. She also takes her feet off the ground which lowers her vision showing that she trusts him enough to to sort of “close her eyes” around him

Toph has very wholesome interactions with friendly firebenders. She is so uncharacteristically sweet and wise towards fire allies, she even almost outclassed Iroh in his own game 🥰
I love the way Toph always grabs the Zuko's arm (and she did it too with Aang and Sokka) I think that's cute, cause even she didn't need them to help her, she can rely on them

Toph literally said she needed one and we see the effects of not getting it by her adult life ending up isolated all her life while everyone else got successful relationships
@@MarvelousMi She said she wanted one, not needed. And it's not like she was isolated her whole life. She still had relationships with her kids well enough to know their families. The worst that happened is she drove a wedge between her kids, and Aang did the same with his kids despite having a field trip. Zuko doesn't fix everything forever, just a lot fot a while.

I could easily imagine Zuko being the protective older brother to Toph's rambunctious, feisty little sister. They would have a bond many siblings would envy.
They really should have had an episode between the two to flesh out their friendship. Their ''field trip'' was an OOC moment for Zuko, and seeing that the Director of that episode was Bryke, it only says a lot of his writing credibility.

Once again, atla being shockingly accurate. That is actually a symptom of someone who was abused as a child, and they portrayed a lot of those aspects in zuko's demeanor (eg hiding emotions, apologizing an excessive amount, expecting to be severely punished for doing anything wrong.) The same can be said about azula, but I don't think anyone needs me to tell them azula had issues lol.

Well Toph didnt experience first hand how relentlessly Zuko hunted Aang during book 1 & the first part of 2. By the time she joined team Avatar Zuko was already a fugitive of the Fire Nation and was just on the run from Azula. So she didnt have this personal hate towards him like Katara, Sokka and Aang did

@@jizou1581 Depends on how good Azula is at faking things. A heartbeat and rhythm that stays too consistent and "perfect" would be unsettling. It's one thing to fool eyes and ears or even a machine that could do the same thing Toph does, but fooling someone that has spent their life "seeing" people the way she does is an enormous feat given that they have a very strong picture of what "normal" is.

I feel sorry for her, because she's trying to show her feelings to people around her, which is a big thing for her raised in such family and being so tough all the time, but u don't see anyone give it back to her. For example here it was really rude and unthoughtful of zuko to shut her that way, when she was talking about her family. And it wasn't that she was repeating something, we know her story, but noone in the team had ever tried to talk to her about her family and her feelings. The only person who had a conversation with her was Iroh
Toph had been with the Gaang for way longer than Zuko but never truly opened up to them about her family, and Zuko just... shit on it. For Aang... sighs*
Yeah, I feel for Toph..but you have to realize Zuko has the worst family problems of the entire gang, compared to his childhood, Toph doesn't really have much to complain about (im sure this is Zuko's perspective), and she was also opening up to him at the worst time. They had a few days before the battle between ozai and aang, and aang was nowhere to be found. The stakes were high and I'm sure he was pretty stressed out
I think it was just that she was opening up at a bad time. Not to mention Zuko’s not exactly a good people person.
She opened up in the third book, when she and Katara had a little rivalry over the right attittude, she even cried in their end dialogue. And also in the episode about their life in Ba Sing Se, when Katara and Toph were just chilling out in the city
The truth is that sometimes Zuko should show a little kindness to the only girl on the team who supports him instead of answering her badly, he should remember that it is already a miracle that the rest of the people on the team tolerate him, taking into account that Katara threatened to kill him, he really should learn to talk to people, especially if he wants to be a firelord.

Yeah. Minus the fact that I have 3 brothers of my own, even if Zuko was like a friend to me and we've known each other for a very long time, I would consider him as a brother to me. Because even though he can be a hot head sometimes, deep down, he's funny, selfless, wise, a gentleman, trustworthy, honorable, has a good heart, and fatherly. That's mostly what every brother has. And I know compared to Azula, I would treat him like any other sister would. With love, respect and not try to kill him. He'd be my brother from another mother

Everyone had really devastating pasts and upbringings, but Zuko and Togh are the only 2 who never really had a childhood.
Zuko never had a childhood due to being a prince who's sister maliciously conspired against him at every turn and his father burned and banished him for speaking out of turn in the war room and lost his mother to exile as a kid too.
Togh never knew what it was like to be a kid because her parents kept treating her like a wilting plant they were trying to keep alive due to her disability and kept her hidden from the world.

When Zuko apologized, and Aang’s eyes got wide....oh man. It was the moment Aang finally saw Zuko’s redemption, it was just wonderful.
I think his eyes got like that because he was talking about controlling his bending better cuz of hurting someone, and Aang has experienced that same thing, he recognised the feeling he himself felt and he gave Zuko an opportunity

@@random-sy7bz When? I've seen him blush from embarrassment and uncomfort once with Katara during the play. I don't get how people ship these two. Katara doesn't deserve him. She takes forever to forgive him. He changes and becomes humble, so she blasts water at him. How romantic or loving. They barely have anything in common. Now Aang and Katara make sense. They have a bond from near the beginning and they help each other grow, train, and stay best friends through thick and thin. That's more relationship material than one hit one time blush between two people who, even in the show, don't seem to insinuate they have ANYTHING together. Of all the ships with Zuko, this is actually one that is so big and I really don't understand where it comes from. Even though I don't ship them because I see her as too young and not as mature; more like a little sister, at least Zuko blushes around Toph and she seems to maybe have a crush on him. Maybe. I see why people would ship them even though I don't particularly care for the ship, but Katara? Why? Is it because he's red and she's blue? Fire and water? Or that one single time she thought maybe he had changed? I would've done the same thing as Katara during that same time they were both imprisoned and it wouldn't have been because I was in love with or had a crush on him, but because I'd be a decent human being, so I don't get the romance in that. I love Zuko. Hard core crush, in fact, and while I like all the main characters, I'd love to be able to look up my favorite character without having to see this weird ship everywhere. It was cute at first because everyone can ship who they want to ship, but it's kinda annoying now because finding Zuko alone without the crazy fan art and Zuko Katara ships is near impossible! If these people like Zuko and Toph together, instead of going against their ships with a, "No, this," you could just say your preference is Zuko X Katara. Annoying or not, at least it's just an opinion rather than a claimed fact that isn't factual because you favor a ship. It's far more ignorable to anyone who may disagree.
