ULTIMATE DIY WORKBENCH BUILD

- Building the heavy-duty workbench I've wanted for a lifetime. I built tool holders with french-cleats. It's the Ultimate workbench for the kind of work I like to do with my kids.
Workbench lights amzn.to/3I2cjIs (amazon) (I have four banks of four lights for a total of 16 lights over the bench. It makes for an incredible amount of light and almost non-existent shadows on the bench.

I think he's a fan of DeWalt
Agreed, there are subtle hints to this.
And French cleats.
Definitely!
Is he sponsored by dewalt??
@@omarriddick4712 No. I wish.
In the process of building my garage workstation/bench with my dad every year. They come down for 3 months and we work on projects. This type of bonding is the best and i hope future generations continue to do the same.
Best. Memories. Ever!
Overall it’s a decent table. If you’re not using it for big heavy projects. Its gets unstable when using my jigsaw and handsaw. Table starts to shake and lifts off the ground. Maybe I’m doing something wrong? Also the folding mechanic works great ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh when setting up, but I can’t get the table to fold down. It gets stuck 3/4ths on the way down.
Try it! It is wonderful
I'm definitely a soft-handed academic type (elementary school teacher), but after building a deck I'm hooked on carpentry. Been watching a lot of woodworking videos and building my tool collection, and I ended up deciding to design something that was basically EXACTLY THIS: the upper storage, french cleat, bench, movable power strips... THIS was my vision.
It's.... beautiful.
Thank you very much. I really love everything about how it turned out except for the floor coating.
If you built a deck you can make this setup. It took a while but I am so pleased every time I walk in now. Except my kids like to leave projects out. We need to work on that.
Power strips and chargers on french cleats.....mind blown.
Sometimes simple things make life better!
WOW!!! What a fantastic job!!! What a wonderful family! I am floored. Oh, and what great animals, too! You are so blessed!
You are so kind!
That is awesome! Teach your children well. That's what it's all about.
Absolutely!
Amazing build! At first I was like, oh I need to build that. Then I realized I don't have enough tools to fill it up..
That might be why I have that many tools. I had a few openings to fill.
Amazing! I'm super impressed. It's very satisfying seeing all those tools organized into neat rows.
Thank you very much. OCD at its finest!
Nice work! Love that you are teaching your kids to work and with safety 😃😃😃 and the bird too 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Awwww. Thank you very much. Benny is my buddy. Never thought I'd love a bird this much.
The Benny self promote at the end was genius!
He loves the attention. Ok, I love it too. Lol
Benny who made the whole set with his awesome tool box..
Incredible talent and workmanship. And it even looks better in person!
Thank you, John!
Nice clean work, even better get the kids involved. Good on you dad.
Thank you very much. It's been an overwhelming project at times but I'm hoping we are making memories and learning some skills. It's a little warm in the workshop right now. Mid summer is toasty.
This is one of my most favorite videos on UA-cam. I’m going to make work bench area in my garage this summer. I’ll send pictures if it turns out nice. I hope you are able to post more wood working videos soon.
Tell me about your plans. I want to hear all about it!
Well done. I had a vision for my own garage, but wasn’t sure. Then I saw this.
It absolutely feels amazing in the shop. I love the feel and function of it.
This is the coolest thing I've ever seen....
Thanks so much! You are too kind.
Really love the idea of all the wood mounting. I would've screwed the shelves in so they never move but thats just me. Sick set up, thanks for the ideas
Glad you liked it. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine now.
You're making me drool over this workbench! Well done!
You and me both!
Great job, love the Dewalt collection
Thanks 👍
Wow!! Great planning! It turned out super good!! I love it!!!
Thanks so much! 😊
Awesome shop in uniform what a great plan layout detail striking appearance and
what a team
Thank you very, very much! I really appreciate it! I love my team/family very much. Working on a project with them today.
I cackled at “is this dual wielding?” And yay Benny!!! He’s being so silly.
Man that’s a really cool work space. Very organized! Tell Benny I said hi! I hope he remembers me.
Benny is the best shop friend, ever!
I'm sure he remembers you. We will have to get together sometime and see how he reacts.
I enjoyed your video buddy it was great to see that your kids help you with projects you shared your pets and introduce your wife into your video the project turned out absolutely terrific
It is so nice to have that done since it is the hub of all other projects in my life. It really makes it hard to get anything done when the workbench is a mess.
It’s awesome how your kids help you with your builds 👌
Thanks so much. Being a Dad is the best part of my life.
I love this im going to copy some of these ideas for my bench thank you
Hope it becomes your dream shop!!!
That’s a really nice build and building it with the kiddos is great!
Building with my kids is really what fulfills my life right now!
That's an awesome bench, so great that your kids help out too!
Thanks so much. It's great working with them.
Really nice setup and well organized. I got some great ideas from this, thank you. 👍👍
Awesome, thank you!
Complimenti, un bel lavoro organizzativo per il tuo lavoro. Grazie per i tuoi tutorials, scoperti oggi. Mi sono iscritto perché sei molto preciso, ma spesso non ci sono misure e/o consigli. Saluti. Modesto
Nice! You're a Dewalt man also. Yeah they get you when you buy the first tool. Drat! Double Drat!
Yep, once you commit it's hard to switch out. I love the ambiance the yellow gives.
Woah, this guy reply to every comment. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I try.
I’m chasing your love of desalt! For I am a fan of the yellow and black as well!
Go team DeWalt
Wow! That's an amazing workbench!! My love of tools also came from my dad, much like your son it seems.
That is awesome. What do you use your tools for the most?
@@SABERTOOTHBEAVER mostly repairs around the house.
That is an endless battle, I'm afraid. This weekend I sanded down a metal shop project I built 31 years ago that needed to be sanded and repainted. Just got it done and it looks really good.
Benny has done a good job in the end
She is a great bird!
The design for the ceiling storage is pretty solid. I just moved into a house and had to take down the one that the previous owner built... Screws and nails going the wrong way, not enough support pieces, screws splitting wood, some joists were simply sitting on a 2x4, not even attached... I was afraid to put a few pieces of wood on it, let alone a few thousand pounds. Build it right the first time, use best practices, make sure you're code compliant where applicable... :)
It's frustrating when something isn't built well. It's even scarier when it might fall apart on you. I didn't want to worry about this holding up for the long haul. I don't plan on moving so this will be the shop I use for most of the rest of my life. I think it's pretty solid.
"I put this French cleat on a French cleat for various French cleats"
Kidding aside...looks amazing!!
Thank you. We can handle the banter! Fire away.
Came from Reddit to check out your build. Wasn't disappointed.
Looking forward to seeing what you post next
Thanks so much. Look forward to going on this adventure with anyone who wants to join us. Let me know how we can improve our channel!
i like this man, good job. u gave me some good ideas for my bench, thanks!
I'm glad you liked it I hope you enjoy our channel! We got some other fun projects coming up
Thanks so much!
It looks great
Thank you! It's been a great project area.
Very nice! I love some of the ideas you've shared.
Thank you!
Would like to see your model paint station build and thank you for sharing your experiences.
I used these paint racks and built a tray/rack to hold them

Pretty darn slick. Thanks for posting the link on FB
Thanks so much for watching. I hope you enjoy our future videos too!
Your original towel holder will work with some locking spacers to go above the holder and pinch it into the cleat.
That is a good solution that I didn't think of. Thank you.
Great video you an the kids did a amazing job keep up the good work...
That is a workbench to be envious of. I like the Yellow and Black touch.
Thanks so much!
Nice vid. Kudos to your son for moving the tools 😝 but nice to see them involved.
You should show more of the making part, not just the installation.
Thank you. My future build videos will be more step by step I think.
Holy crap that's Soo good and all that DeWalt! Wow..
Thanks so much. We've got a really fun video coming on Thursday. I hope it makes you laugh. The whole reason to have a shop is to make things and we made a lot of Christmas Boobytraps. Enjoy!
Very nice good thinking ahead recording it all for a time lapse
It was a really fun project. Now to finish the rest of the shop!
Built a French cleat for the French cleats haha, badass set up 👍🏽
I love french cleats on french cleats!
Baaaaad ass setup...im an octopus worker as well...i need many tools and love the build.
I'm stealing that phrase..."octopus worker" Yep that sums it up right there. Thanks for the compliment. I hope you enjoy seeing the future projects that come out of this shop.
Love the layout and organisation!! Awesome. I see your a fan of the dewalt gear just like myself. I will have to look through your other videos I really enjoyed that one!
Thanks for checking them out I hope you enjoy them let me know if you have any comments or criticisms or things we should do better
Great build man would love a work area like that
Thanks!
Now’s that’s a true dewalt fan boys! Awesome built and collections!
Thanks Jay. I really appreciate it. Hope you enjoy the things we are building in the future.
Nicest workbench I have seen!!
Thanks so much. It's my happy place.
So you're a Milwaukee fan huh! Lol. Seriously this build is awesome!! Im literally in the beginning stages of building out a wall and taking inspiration from this. Great stuff and great to see the kids involved too! Cheers!
Thank you!
Ingenious design.
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks fantastic! Excellent work.
Thanks so much for the compliment. I really appreciate it!
Really impressive build, I love the lighting setup too. Best wishes from the UK
Thanks so much. I love the UK
We just don't have garages that huge unfortunately 😂😭
Hi Rekraps uncle!!
Looks fantastic!
Very nice shop thanks for sharing your video.
Thanks for visiting!
This is very cool! I did something similar and absolutely love it--great job!
Thanks so much. Tell me about what you made.
@@SABERTOOTHBEAVER For sure. I did a rolling bench that has storage underneath and behind it I'm going to put up a french cleat system (probably like yours thanks for that!) I have a MUCH smaller garage so I'm limited on space. I absolutely LOVE all the Dewalt, they should sponsor you hahahaha.
@@SABERTOOTHBEAVER I subscribed this morning and look forward to more of you great content--all the best!
Nice workbench. If you put end caps on the screwdriver shelf and extend them down, the shelf should have the support it needs. I just found you and subbed. Looking forward to many great videos here.
I love the end cap idea thank you very much. I hadn't thought about that. That's what I love about the internet You can get advice from people who think outside of the box that you are in. Thank you very much!
OMG… it is fantastic!!
Thank you! Did you see the Christmas Boobytraps video?
The BIRD WAS AWESOME 🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙
He's my buddy. I absolutely love having him around.
It looks like all your tools are so well Maintained, or real new. ?
Either way real nice bench set-up !
Beat up ones are on my work truck. Most of these are newish.
@@SABERTOOTHBEAVER that's Great...nice work
Great versatile workspace!
Thank you! Cheers!
When you use your tools everyday the workspace tends to end up a pile of tools, lol. Cool ideas though. I may use some in my tool trailers with similar setups
My work truck is thrashed right now I know what you mean.
The bird stole the cake.
SABERTOOTH BEAVER great video!! I’m really interest in kore info on the tool organizer that is holding all the cordless tools and the cubbies above that!
Did you mean it was interesting or you are interested and have other questions? How can I help?
@@SABERTOOTHBEAVER If you draw-up some plans for the bench area, people will use them.
VERY cool build! Well done
Thank you very much!
I don’t know if you’ve changed anything but when you were talking about the screwdrivers and the nut drivers I had an idea of Gluing that foam rubber stuff that goes inside of a a gun case. Have you thought about trying to glue or epoxy something like that underneath.
I like that solution that's a good idea
So nice to see everything organised and neat. Can I ask why you have so many drills?
I often work with my three kids and we need more tools.
SABERTOOTH BEAVER that makes perfect sense. I can see how it would happen the other way as well, as I’ve seen a few good deals for combo drills that are cheaper than the batteries alone. Great video bud
@@o.g.bwoodwork my kids are obsessed with my tools as well. Especially the dewalt 20v blower, it's great for blowing out the truck or cleaning off the tools at the end of the day
Dewalt is one of those brands where you get a few percent better but for quite a lot more money. Their bench top machines are pretty good though
They've held up really well for me. I have some Porter Cable, some rigid, some Craftsman, some Harbor Freight, some dremel, etc, but almost all of my battery 20V stuff is DeWalt. What is your go to brand?
Dude Benny is the bomb. It's not real clear what tool brand you really like though. Lol. Oh yeah the tool wall is awesome.
Thanks so much. I really appreciate it!
DeWalt FTW!
The prize for buying DeWalt! ua-cam.com/users/shortsOs3S9xQmT8k?feature=share
So glad you posted this! It's perfect timing for the build I'm about to embark on. Gonna be using a lot of this for inspiration. Thank you! And now I want a bird 🐦. How did you make those 45 degree cuts on your french cleats?
Thanks for the kind words! Made the 45 degree cuts with a table saw. Stay tuned for the follow up videos on the rest of the garage remodel, it's really coming along! Good luck on your project!
Real nice!
Thanks, John! Hope you enjoy our projects going forward!
Pretty sweet
Can you imagine building this with current prices of plywood? Gonna have to sell my kidney.
I did it right before the price is jumped. That worked out perfectly!!!
@@SABERTOOTHBEAVER я думал только в России на всё выросли а не во всём мире. Всего хорошего вам
Yeah, I picked a bad time to build my first french cleat wall....
To start I just did a 4x8 area of my wall next to my workbench, so one $70 sheet of 4x8 of plywood sufficed, with a decent amount left over for tool holders (one simple shelf down, many more things to go!)
Awesome build! By chance do you have plans for the actual bench itself? Looks real solid but very clean looking. I have made a few out of two by fours but that looks like 4x4s for the legs maybe. Any information on it would be appreciated. Again awesome stuff.
Check out my other video called megabench. I got a little more into the dimensions on that one
Do you have a website for the plans for this project
I love it I’m also a huge dewalt fan!!
I'm working on putting that together but the best I have right now are the description on the other workbench video called MegaBench. I talked about the bench plans a little bit more on that one
I also like Milwaukee
They make great tools too.
Awesome 👍
Thanks 🤗
Very very nice, you should replace all your crappy tools with the superior Makita though like me! But seriously just subscribed, great build.👏🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
Love it!
Regardless....not irregardless
My bad.
Very nice job
Thank you very much
shout out Type1 gang!
Are you referring to diabetes?
Nice job
Thank you. It took many years to get there...
How do you feel about the workbench height you selected (36.5" high?). Also, what about the overhead assembly -- how are you feeling about the depth (elevation) of the assembly above your working area?
I'm 6'2. I wouldn't mind if it was a couple of inches higher. I like the height of the lower shelf so I have room to put things underneath it. And I like the height of the second shelf so that bins will fit underneath it. I completely love how the upper shelf turned out it's the perfect size and shape. Plus it gives me a place to mount the lights and the lights are really like working under a stadium lighting when they're all on. if that shelf was any higher it wouldn't do any good because I couldn't reach any higher onto the back wall than I can the way it is.
I talk more about the workbench design on my mega bench video I built a third bench.
I’m speechless! Are you the Dewalt CEO? 🤔 hahaha seriously impressive
I would love for them to sponsor me. but apparently I'm keeping them in business so that's probably not going to happen
@@SABERTOOTHBEAVER Hahahaha!!! Yeah I think you have everything they make
Very nice!
Thank you!
Just curious to know if you had plans you could share for the tool holder portion of this build. Also wondering materials you used and how did you assembly it? Plywood with screws or nails? Love this build. This is probably the second time I have said that but just going to be building this shortly in my own garage.
There are more pictures and descriptions on my facebook and instagram accounts.

@@SABERTOOTHBEAVER So now that I am in the midst of building this, I am just curious to know if your overhanging storage is built to spec as per the Stanley site. I noticed they have the shelf at 4 ft in width. Is yours 4ft?
Well done and thanks for sharing. How did you end up re-doing the holders for the screwdrivers, and pliers, you were saying you didn't like the initial results(?). I like the bird, he's a funny character.
I ended up keeping the plier holder the way it is. If you keep the tools leaning forward it works nicely. The screwdriver holder I ended up redoing with magnetic plates on a french cleat. This is one of four videos where I show most of the cleats I built ua-cam.com/video/eL62BUgosJc/v-deo.html
How did you account for the concrete lip on the garage at the end of the wall? Did you shorten the back legs by the height of the lip so it could sit flush? You can see the lip I am talking about at 0:25
I built a lip on the back of the bench to butt it up against the wall, but also my bench has 4x4 legs that had 2x4 crossbeams that were higher than the cement lip, so the whole bench was already 1.5 inches (the depth of a 2x4) closer to the wall, plus a small lip on the back of the bench to keep things from sliding off and it works wonderfully!
@@SABERTOOTHBEAVER Thanks. I ended up just cutting my back legs a little short so they rest on the lip partially. Looks a little jank but it works.
Do you have the plans for this build available anywhere? I can do the work. I just need the plans to make it happen.
www.stanleytools.com/explore/project-guides/installing-overhead-garage-storage for the overhead part. The rest I built more or less custom for my space.
@@SABERTOOTHBEAVER Thanks for that. I was hoping for all the things you have along the wall. I recently started buying Dewalt tools and would love a workbench/storage system like that! Great job!
I wish i had this
It took me a really long time to get it
@@SABERTOOTHBEAVER 😊nice keep up the good work
If it's not yellow and black - it ain't going on the rack!
I love yellow and black tools
@@SABERTOOTHBEAVER We can tell.
