Shoe here from Greenville, NC. Just built a new house and finally have a real shop that doesn't have to share time as a garage. Good info and creativity. I'll surly use more than one idea for my own French Cleat wall. ECU Pirates territory.
I used a backer board like you did, that way I had flexibility and could use more screws along the length of each clear. Backer board is the best idea! I stained the backer board light color and stained cleats a darker color for nice contrast.
I love French cleat system. I used it to mount an old painted surfboard to a wall. Thanks for reminding me of their amazingness! From 🇳🇿 New Zealand (slightly different to the Australian flag 😅)
I"m a new beginner looking to add a french cleat wall in my garage for my tools. This was the video I was looking for to help me build a great wall! Thanks for the video!
Hello I’m from the uk and a beginner wood worker I really like the videos you are putting up on UA-cam specially the one about the modular workbench great idea as only have one room to do my woodworking in and rent my apartment. Keep up the good work and great how to videos Thankyou Zak great channel
Liked the mix of build versus why, support types etc. I had forgotten the paper transfer trick for screw holes on battery chargers and the like. So nice to see you don't have to buy a mountain of cheap plastic or metal hangers. Just spin the wheel you already have in your head. Nice job!
Excellent idea with the flags. I’m from Jamaica currently living in British Columbia, Canada. I’d love to see my Jamaican on your wall. I also really like your French cleat wall.
8/16/24 Hello my name is Fred I am in Philadelphia and I am building a small work shop I am 73,years old I love the idea of the Franch Cleat wow that gives me some great ideas I have a basement reproof with Tung and Grove walls and have a few tools and a short space to work with the franch cleat will work well Thank You...
I’m Canadian (not French Canadian), but I love French cleats(ha ha). I do have some on one wall, but they are spaced a lot farther apart(16”). After seeing yours, I’m going to add some in between. Thanks for sharing your great setup!
One of the french cleat cheats I learned about is using 1x6 planks then splitting them in half the way he did. Just makes for less cutting. Also you generally want to use two cleats, top and bottom, just to make things secure or at least have it brace against the wall. You can actually go smaller on the cleats too. I feel like the best size is ripping 1x4 cause you don't have to jump such a large gap for each cleat. It also makes it easier to measure out, in my opinion.
A great Ida! Especially the flexibility to move holders around extremely easy. Easier than moving hooks not to mention screws. looking forward to more inspiration from a Danish fan. 🇩🇰
Hello Sir, I my name is Zaw Oo. I am from Burma. I am also a U.S Army veteran. you mentioned in the video that you will place the flags from all over the world. That tell me that you are not a prejudice person. Thank you for that. Love watching that French Cleats video. Salute you, Sir.
Another tip for marking screw slots. Put a piece of masking tape across the holes and punch the holes. You can then tape this to your board and drill the holes.
Moving to a new house, mainly so I can have a workshop. I have watched a lot of YT channels but yours is so simple and inspirational. Thanks from Wales (we have the best flag!)
So , yours ideas found me ,here ,in Romania .and it is awesome : my hobbies are scale models ,including SI-FI world ,and electronics . Space and organizing , for any handyman , big problem , but not anymore : scale down your French cleat wall , is giving me the possibility of modular organization . I'm 60-th , and as you see never is late for ... anything . Keep it up !
Hi. I am Dori from Iceland. It is a great video and this French cleat system you made is awsome. Hopefully I can make something similar in my garage🇮🇸👍
That is awesome, I plan to do that along with the latching modular workbench. I'm new to woodworking and want to build all new kitchen and bathroom cabinets and vanities. These build plans are excellent, and very appreciated. Thank You from California.
Great video! Thanks for sharing your skills. Enjoyed hearing your idea to display flags across the globe, I find this both creative and inclusive! Cheers from Texas!!
Excelente y quedo muy bien colocare este video entre mis proyectos porque es muy importante la organización para simplificar el trabajo y aparte de que se ve muy bien. Gracias , Saludos desde Caracas, Venezuela.
You work so smart for such a young guy. I’m twice your age and learning new things watching you. The flag idea is great as well, I admire your inclusiveness.
im about to make a much smaller french cleat wall and I'm glad I watched your video before doing so. You gave me some great ideas on what all I can do with it! I made a 3'x7' workbench based your modular design and it's my favorite thing that I've built in the shop. Really enjoying your videos! Get you a small Texas flag for that wall (if you have any room left by now)!
Minnesota born and raised! Just started my own French cleat wall, looking forward to getting those creative juice's flowing. I may or may not be copying some of yours :)
Excellent videos. I am currently building the modular workbenches. You cant have a flag wall without one of the US's best friends on there - Australia. Thanks.
what a brilliant video and showcase of the ingenious things you can create with the right knowledge and range of tools... totally inspiring to a new wood-worker from Northern Ireland 🇮🇪🇬🇧 (don't have the N. Ireland flag included, so you're getting a great deal on 2 for 1 here 😂)!
Heya Mate, Pat from Cairns, North Queensland, Australia. Watched your video as I am starting my first French cleat project tomorrow morning, cheers for sharing your work
Very nice work! I’m part way through the exact same journey and have plans to add a rolling library ladder to access the upper parts. Cheers. Mal in Australia.
Just discovered your channel, searching for a cantilever lumber rack, and wow, that was really impressive! I immediately subscribed to your channel. And because I saw your giant french cleat wall behind you in that lumber rack video, I searched through your other videos to find it just here. That wall is amazing! I love it, and I will definitely build both projects. Keep the good vibes going! Greetings from your new Belgian 🇧🇪 fan!
Mr. Kimball, I enjoyed your video. I have long set up my shop like yours. to the point where I can pick a tool without looking at it, or if I'm on a job, I tell my wife exactly where to look. I will definitely use some ideas from your show, too. Thank you for sharing your brilliant ideas.
Loving your builds, and have used a couple of your plans already. I have followed your shop build from the beginning and going to use several of your ideas in my new 30x40 shop build. Avid viewer from Mississippi here!
No BS? The music is BS!!! I originally subbed, but could not listen to the music anymore. Cancelled my sub and moved to some other site. If he likes shitty monotonous music then he and everyone else can do it without me.
Great inspiration... I am in the process of having a shop built here in Mexico. We are originally from the states but have chosen to retire here in Mexico... I will be incorporating a series of your build ideas in the new shop... Keep up the good work and you can hang the Mexican flag... Best regards, Roger
Oh my God I don’t own the tools you have. I just have one or two drills and a sawzall but I’m so inspired to build a wall and organize a ton of tools just as you have done! I was searching french cleats, and had no idea I would StumbleUpon that’s awesome channel!! I’m in the USA but when I’m not I’m in Portugal! Add the flag, brother! Thanks for making it fun and interactive!
Hi this is Bear from Kingston upon Hull in the UK what a brilliant idea I wish I had your skills. Keep the excellent videos coming thank you Bear Hull UK
I like this it nice as for the chip board I would have painted it with a light gray deck paint to contrast the the cleats the cleats could be white to give you a consistent wall color a pattern.
@BearMountain Builds this Canadian suggests you make acoustic panels up top since you have high up cleats! It will reduce the noise levels for yourself when using loud machines and improve video audio. Thanks for the lesson
Just a suggestion, I would add a rolling ladder like they install on tall bookshelves in libraries to access the high areas
That would be a good build for YT.
Or a cherry picker !
But it, 6’4” there’s not a lot he can’t reach.
Yeah, was thinking the same once i got a sense of scale of his space there! and I think that would make for excellent YT viewing in his builds format!
@@suzannehofer2541 He's using a ladder in the video....
LOVED THIS! Respect from Canada for my Yankee brother 07
I'm from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I have used French Cleats for years and find them practical and ingenious to store all my tools.
THanks. I have just started a french cleat section on my wall. Starting to realize I may need to expand it. Seeing the different shelves helps a lot.
Thank you, finding the measurement of 5 inch strips with a long side cut of 2 3/4" (for the 45 degree cut) was very helpful!
French client walls are awesome I love mine, yours looks freaken awesome. South Africa is where I’m watching your videos from. 🇿🇦
I love watching things come together like this.. perfect playback speed.
And thanks for teaching me what a gusset is.

Very nice! I do prefer your design and the way you've taken account of weight and torque. Excellent! Rgds Stu - Auckland New Zealand
