It wasn't done though. I still needed to finish some details to make it even better. I created a French Cleat holder for my table saw, modified my scroll saw to be clamped anywhere, built a French Cleat large paper roll holder, added electrical outlets, and most importantly, built a comfy swivel seat that slides out when in use and hides away when not in use. The seat really makes this a unique workbench. Enjoy!

I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

A suggestion - Attach a dolly wheel to the bottom of the stool to ensure it does not fail in the future. Those slides will eventually fail with extended use.

How would that work? With any attachment directly under the stool, it can't slide in nearly as far as it needs to. Also, it would pretty much ruin the soft puzzle mats he uses. What's the advantage of buying a wheel that reduces how good your workbench is, if you can also just buy new slides in a couple of years? You may even be able to just flip the slides around side to side if they start sagging. It's not like they're going to be extended often, so the only real wear they could have is sag. It'll be many years before those things wear down, so it's just not worth adding a wheel underneath it.

You could add a fold-out foot on the bottom of the swivel stool to support you when you sit on it and take some stress off the drawer slides. You can build it so it folds up when you slide the chair in and drops out when you pull the chair out.

Just want to start out by saying that this is an awesome design. I definitely am inspired to redo my main workbench. Also wanted to say that Rockler sells some amazing workbench casters that mount on the outside of the table legs and will fold out of the way so that the weight of the bench, while stationary, is completely on the legs/frame. They support up to 400 lbs a piece.

would recommend that you update the seat so the 4x4 piece under the seat is longer and extends towards the floor but just short, so when the seat flexes when you are sitting the lower "Leg" piece touches the floor and make the seat more stable and help prevent your sliders from bending or pulling out screws. you could even add adjustable rubber foot ( screw type) to the "Leg" so you can adjust the flex amount.

Wow Ben, sometimes it's little things that you would have never thought of but are super profound once you see it. For me, it was the idea of having a small table saw that can be hooked onto the end of my workbench. I have a large Delta contractor saw with the big table and all that crap and for 99% of my work on it, I am cutting small pieces with my sled or doing some dado work. All of this is going to change now that I've seen your video. I'm going to go find a really good portable saw and do exactly what you're doing and then store my big saw for when I absolutely need it, if I ever need it. Just a fantastic idea Ben. Thanks again for sharing

For the seat - Adding even a small support underneath will help a TON. Give the beam something to rest upon, so you don't need to trust the slides 100%. A short piece of scrap 2x4 right where it extends will give it a place to bear load and give the slides a lot of help by shortening the effective length of the lever arm. Also, simpler than a caster for now.

4:20 great idea for mounting the table saw, but I really think it needs additional support in the bottom, going directly onto your floor. The bend in the cleat becomes very visible when you add the saw, it's just not meant to support that weight. Could have safety issues...

A wooden peg or chair wheel of some kind mounted to a spring loaded hinge on the bottom of the stool base at the back would give you more support and make your stool sturdier. The spring loaded hinge would 'spring' closed when you pull the stool out and force the peg/wheel vertical to point at the ground, and when you push the stool in, the 4x4 base board would push the hinge open, raising the peg/wheel off the ground into a horizontal position or pointing up depending on how far int he stool is pushed.

Nice Bench, I also use my bench as an out feed table, however, my saw is higher than the bench and I use two pieces of 2x6 blocks dogged to the bench top as the out feed supports. The 2x6 blocks are tapered to prevent catching the end of the material as it comes off of the saw. This allows me to continue to rip material while low profile items like tools i.e. hammers, screw drivers, chisels, tape measures, pencils etc remain lying on the bench. The bench doesn't have to be completely cleared off. The 2x6 pcs can be dogged to the bench to prevent sliding or like mine the first block has a cleat and hooks on end of my bench.

Very impressive. Easy to tell that you spent a lot of time designing this. I think the slide out stool is an excellent design. And you can always upgrade the drawer slides, once you find ones that have the load capacity you are looking for.

You are inspiring young-man. Keep up the great work. I will have to consult you as live in a small town home with very tight space in the garage.

Three things. 1st, I like your work and motivation. Before I give u some feedback. I am a licensed contractor and have been building homes for 30 years. That is now my hobby and I am a senior officer for OSHA and have been for 17 years. 2nd, your wiring is ok. However, using an extension cord wired permanently into a box is against the law. No biggie if you are not a business and have no employees. However, the second you do, it becomes a safety concern for your employees. The fine can be considerably large! 😬. 3rd, when wiring boxes, always leave some extra pig tail before entering the box. This allows for any movement without compromising the wire, it also gives you extra if you need to upgrade what's in your box. Glad to see someone who has trade skills. Keep up the good work!

Use a hinge and have a drop down leg support under the seat support to remove tension from the drawer slides, Really awesome build so far.

It would be cool to add a little piece on the back of the seat so you could pull it out with your foot. Not required but the little details sometimes make things so much sweeter
Great work. Hope to see more

Slick work. If I had a full shop table area I might do something like that. But as a bigger guy I'd put a supporting caster or such under the chair seat maybe. I'm planning to redo my small shop area this winter and french cleats are gonna be a BIG part of it. Love the dogs...helping...:P

wow. just wow. this is very cool. For the bench, and more a concern for my 200LB frame, what if you just created a block that is just a hair taller than the under side of the stool when it is extended, you can store it loosely in front of the stool when it is stowed, then when you use the stool, you take the block, place it on the floor under where the stool will sit and your weight is transferred to the block as opposed to the drawer slides.

I _love_ that french cleat system for the table saw. I wonder how many fixed power tools could be mounted like this, allowing for a completely modular shop bench in confined spaces.
Also your dog constantly laying down in your way every time you need to do something with that extension cable cracked me up.

DEFFENTALLY one of the better hand made work table I've seen in a very long time. what about adding a some kind of straight cut razor for your paper roll? like to see how you would accomplish this part...

    • @BenTardif
      @BenTardif  3 роки тому

I’ve just used scissors or a utility blade to slice the paper. The top of the workbench is a sacrificial top, so no worries about making some slice marks

I think your dog is getting more use out of the puzzle mates before you do, hee hee. Bloody GREAT Bench and the idea of the French cleats on the ends of the bench. Will be doing the same sort of idea on my bench also. Thanks heaps, Teddy
