Problem is that India's main geostrategic concern right now is containing China. Which they cannot do it alone. They need allies. China is encroaching on Indian territory, making an ally of Pakistan, building ports at the Indian sea, challenging India as a regional power. It has no ally to turn to in the region, that could aid her. Russia will not aid India in a conflict with China. At most it will sell weapons, but that's it. Who else can India turn to? Well, the US and its patchwork of alliances.
So the time has come for India to pick a side. Remaining neutral is an option for sure, but we are gradually transitioning to a bipolar world, with a Russia-China tandem challenging the US-Europe tandem. India will come at a point where it has to trade one of the two: 1) military connections to Russia 2) containing China within a US-led coalition.
Neither decision is easy to make, both come with its wins and losses. But eventually a decision has to be made, because at least one of the players will no longer extend their help. Probably Russia not, but the US for sure will.

70-80% of India's military hardware is imported from Russia. If India angers Russia, at times of conflict with China or pakistan all they hav to do is nothing, really nothing eg. Not selling/delaying spares to India. That's the reason why in 2020 when India and China confrontation happened, first thing Indian defence minister did was to visit Moscow to ensure adequate military supplies. That's why India is hesitant to go against Russia. It takes time to develop indigenous weapons, since 70 yrs india is completely dependent on Russia. You can't change things overnight.

Overall that was an excellent analysis, but it is also incomplete. China's strategic partnership with Pakistan raises the stakes for India even higher. As long as that dynamic remains in place, it is very difficult to see how India could move away from Moscow. Not only is Moscow a direct counter to Pakistan, the close relationship between Russia and China makes it possible for Russia to influence Chinese policies affecting their relationship with India. So long as this continues, this stalemate is unlikely to change regardless of the sanctions. It's far too effective a strategy for preserving the status quo for any of the parties involved to risk disturbing the balance. The consequences would be impossible to anticipate.

We are trying to reduce dependance but it'll take time, and its important for us to meet our national interests in the mean time. The best thing America could do instead of threatening with sactions, is that they actually try to fit into russia's role and actively try to replace russia as the chief supplier of arms. Tbh I personally want to see Indo-American relations strengthen over Indo-Russian relations. This is as black and white analysis as you can do.. it's not just about military equipment.. or s400 as mentioned in the video.. here's just a few ripple effects we will face when we stop our neutrality stance..
oil- this is by far India's biggest import. With the west sanctioning Russia without a back up in place and global crude price increasing because of increase in demand this effects our economy and our currency. We respected sanctions on Iran and Venezuela. But sanctioning one of the biggest producers or natural gas in the world and putting pressure on gulf to increase it's production to meet demand is a stupid move. And we're facing the burn because of it.
fertilizer - a major chunk of people and economy are agriculture dependent. And we import it mostly from Russia.. this is often overlooked by analysts but a sudden cutoff of this supply will have equally crippling effects as cutting of Russian gas to EU tomorrow.. any disturbance in supply chain will put the farmers and produce at risk.
Nation's sentiment - we are an emotionally charged country and we remember how the west , particularly USA financed pakistan for decades and nurtured radical terrorist groups to cause instability in afganistan and eventually take over it.. USA caused the biggest security concern we had for decades and now conveniently wants us to put things in the past.. trust is not bought. It's earned.
Our neighbours - we have a nuclear armed rouge nation which loves to see india fall than its own people prosper. Courtesy USA.
On the other hand we have a relentless ,expansionist nuclear armed regime who has 1.5 billion slaves working for it.. courtesy the west.. outsourcing all its industries for cheap labour and green points..
A stark contrast to us where every 100 kms u drive the culture language People and in some cases even governments are different each fighting their own battles internally.
West is already doing it's best to push Russia into the laps of China.. we wish not to participate and bring another nuclear powered enemy on our doorstep.. we are already have an inevitable 2.5 vs 1 war on our hands..
This ukraine crisis has made one thing very clear.. western policy makers look to serve no higher purpose than protect their own self interests and maintain their Monopoly over world.. we are trying to do the same by being neutral in a war we didn't ask for nor are responsible directly or indirectly..

The war ended in just 13 days, with 93,000 Pakistani servicemen surrendering to Indian Armed Forces.

Having looked through the comments, I've found that getting a good understanding on India's seemingly conflicted response to the Russo-Ukrainian War requires getting a good understanding of the Russo-Ukrainian War itself.
While you could see India as caught between two super-powers, a resurgent Russia and a still-assertive U.S.A., I think it helps to see Russia's invasion as more of a "last gasp desperation" than an "expression of new power".
The conflict exposes how The Russian Federation does not actually have enough manpower, money, diplomatic support, internal stability, and production capacity to fight like a super power. Nukes are *increasingly* the Russian state's only claim to world relevance, and Russia is becoming *very* close to The People's Republic of China, contrary to the outdated paradigm from the 1970s that they are enemies or looking to contain each other. The dependency is so high that Russians are increasingly opening Yuan bank accounts, as they don't trust the Ruble.
The lack of direct U.S. involvement, and preference towards isolation at home, also means that the U.S. is increasingly unable to assert a world order or agenda unilaterally; an aging population is of concern.
In short, demography and economy mean that China and India are probably going to be more like superpowers in the 21st century than Russia and the U.S.A., who peaked in the 20th century. With India constituting a greater proportion of wealth and power in the world, the question is just as much about Russia and the U.S. struggling to navigate Indian interests as it is about India trying navigate Russian and U.S. ones.

I feel that in many ways, the policies of India have been shaped by its struggle to find stability and security as what many in previous generations msy have described as "a poor country with a lot of problems".
While there are still many challenges, India is emerging as a global power, and its unique situation could see it attain superpower status at some point within the next 100 years.
I feel that for this to happen, India should shift it's policies from that of a country investing in being on good terms with nations which are wealthier and more powerful than itself to those of a country investing in smaller countries who would see India as an important strategic partner.
I image that in order to emerge, India would need to stop looking for space between the policies of other countries and start making space for other countries with its own policies. I believe that a shift from looking inward to looking outward would be required, should India ever have a hope of narrowing the gap between itself and China.
When people discuss the hypothetical scenario where a UN security council member loses their seat and is replaced, India is often discussed as a potential replacement.
I don't feel that this is a realistic possibility until we see a shift in Indian policies. I feel that India needs to step out of the shadows of other countries and start dictating terms to other nations in order to be taken seriously.
I'm aware that expansion (beyond regions India claims which other countries dispute) is antithetical to India's ideology, as a country which has suffered tremendously under colonialism, yet there are other forms of expansionism...
