Actually, in Russian - “Siloviki” means “enforcers”. The true meaning behind it are the people who come from the security services such as FSB. It used to mean the law enforcer but now the “law” has been dropped and just “enforcer” remained to signify the only characteristics they possess.

Exactly. The entire Russian apparatus is made of thugs and bullies. They exclusively use and understand brutality. To them, what Ukraine is doing is a concept entirely alien.
And do you break bullies? You show everyone else that beyond the veil of appearance, they are *weak*. They have no talents, no skills, they're completely disconnected from the world. It shows that they are, after all, humans... and humans bleed and die too. Also, put sufficient pressure and tension on a pack of orcs, and they will eventually start tearing themselves apart out of paranoia, uncontrollable anger and fear.

That doesn't make it dysfunctional. A better of case of political dysfunction in Russia would be during the Gorbachev or Yeltsin eras, when the country was falling apart internally rather than sanctioned from outside.

The political system is dysfunctional if viewed from a Western or broadly democratic perspective. Russian political history is neither Western nor democratic. The closest was a short period under Gorbachev, maybe. But that moment spiraled into the truly dysfunctional shock capitalism of the Yeltsin era. In function, the current system guards against that type of chaos. And is a return to form of a powerful political-security apparatus that answers to one man.

    1. Siloviki in Russia are all people engaged in police, army, FSB, rosgvardia and other special forces
    2. We call a silovik every man who serves in police or army etc. Not only the elites
    3. Peolpe like Rogozin, Lavrov and Sechin technically are not Siloviks
    3. Siloviks are usually opposed to so called System Liberlas (technocrats in fact)
    4. Besides this two groups, there are also oligarchy, and the majority of Putin's friends who are in power now are very rich buisnessmen or the CEO's of state companies, like Sechin, Rottenberg brothers or Chemezov. We call them oligarchs too, or Putin's oligarchs
    5. Please stop spreading this stupid theory about the influence of Dugin. There're no proofs that he had or has any influence on Putin. He was a bit popular in army in 90's, and he was allowed to build a "Eurasian Youth Union" later. A pro-kremlin organization, that had even less support from administraion than some other similar movements (like "Nashy")
    6. And the whole western view on place that Dugin has in russian public space is overestimated. I can name a dozen of russian conservative or right-wing public speakers who has or had as much influence as Dugin
    7. Of course some russian elites read some books about the Supremacy of Russia, how russia is destined to be an empire and so on. Especially the Siloviks. It doesn't mean they have somewhat similar to a strong unifying ideology. I understand this longing to explain the evil, but at the end they are just obssesed with greed for power and control, and money, and career achievements. And don't give a shit about other people lives. FSB might be the most corrupted structure in whole russian state. In spare time they can think whatever they want, but there is only one man in country who makes strategic decisions.

It would also be great if you expand further and tell about FSO (basically personal elite guard of Putin) and Zolotov's Rosgvardia. Overall there is an interesting dynamic where Putin tries not grant too much power to any one of siloviki group, so they do not overthrow him

Shirvan, "siloviki" means "the people that hold the force". In short, the "siloviki" means "ministries of force". You said "members of the siloviki have enrolled into offices throughout all branches of governance in Russia, with a particular focus on military and security-related agencies".
That goes the other way around. They are the siloviki BECAUSE they run military and security-related agencies. They are all old members of the Putin's clan, ex-KGB, ex-GRU workers, etc., that have been given more and more power by Putin.
They did not "enrol into offices". They were appointed by Putin, because Putin made them his core "tower" in the Kremlin.
Although thank you for telling the world that no, the oligarchs do not run Russia. I mean, the siloviks are themselves crazy rich, but not the oligarchs that the West think they are.
Also, Sechin is probably the most prominent of the siloviki, I do not know why you mentioned him last.

    • @jout738
      @jout738 2 роки тому +8

This Russian system is like Hierarchial system where Putin stands top of it alone and these olgigarchs stand in the second floor in the hirarchial system in second level, so Putin speaks down to them to tell them what Putin wants to do, when they also got a lot power on money over their own region and so these olgigarchs speak down to their small bosses also what they want and so I dont know how long the speaking down goes, unitil some small boss speaks down to their ten workers, so it is hirarchial power system and so Putin puts trust on these olgigarchs, when Putin wish them to be loyal to Putin, when Putin does not want them have some cheeky personality behind all of it and betray Putin, because then Putin never going to be that olgigarch friend again, when Putin drops him out of power to never reach again the same level of power he once had, when Putin cant trust that person, but can be overthrown, if all the olgigarchs together stand up to take Putin down, but I dont think all of them want to do that, when they friends with Putin, got a lot power and money already and so Putin typically rise up the men in the hierarchial power system who Putin personally likes.

Great video, that part where you mentioned that the members of the Siloviki can protect their backs when threatened by Putin, you should have mentioned about Zolotov, Viktor Zolotov is also a member of this "inner circle", he was previously Putin's body guard and later went on to become the chief of the National guard of Russia, Rosgvardiya. The Rosgvardiya has been specifically tasked with taking down any form of protest that might pose a threat to toppling of the government, Zolotov personally leads 365,000 personnel in that national guard. It came into existence after the 2011-12' protests against Putin.

Good analysis as per usual, but I'm not sure they resent the way the Soviet Union surrendered. They were the first ones to benefit from its downfall. We have to stop seeing modern Russia as an extension of the USSR; the later was a confederation of republics, something which Putin has criticized repeatedly. To be clear, he criticized the USSR for being too lax. If we REALLY need some sort of analogy with the past, they're most like modern boyars.
