Joe was outstanding to do business with. I purchased a set of knock-off Bowflex 552 which broke after two weeks of use. I found the Average Joe's aluminum dye fix here on UA-cam. The product came and their was slight challenge getting the silver disc flushly seated on the aluminum disc. Emailed Joe and he gave the option to ship the assembly back to him to properly assemble and fix. Joe was responsive and caring to provide me high service to stay the process until my product was fully repaired. Joe is trustworthy to do business with and stands behind his product. Just fixed my dumbbell, used a disc from an old handle that I had gotten a replacement for when they were still available. Replaced the broken disc and it’s good to go! Thank you so much for posting this! You saved me from having to buy a whole new set!!
Video worked like a charm, dumbbells fixed and ready to go! My disk 5 had broken on one of the dumbbells and was dropping the weight. After searching about I couldn't find any replacement handle assemblies and Bowflex had discontinued the parts. The saving grace came by finding 3D printed replacement discs on eBay or Etsy! Cost $15 plus shipping, plus this video to guide and back in business!!
I'm not sure if this has been posted in these comments or not, but something important that made this tougher for me. If you tighten the nuts too much the dumbbell won't adjust when you put it back on the base with the weights. Also, I would not fully recommend looking at your working dumbbell when trying to figure this out. The first time I "fixed" my dumbbell the nuts were too tight - which I did not realize at the time. So my dial wouldn't turn. But I did EXACTLY what the video said. So I figured maybe I attached the metal plate to the dial wrong, since my model (still a 552 but with white numbers, maybe the same model but a year or two newer ) did not have a "tab" on the metal plate that lined up directly opposite of the top of the dial like the video said. So I looked to see where my "tab" was lined up on my working, intact dumbbell. Which didn't work when I put it all back together. So I took it all apart again. Like he said the larger keyway must be facing down (regardless of the tab). So I reassembled it again according to the video only to realize I had it right the first time, the nut was just too tight. Just hoping my stupidity saves someone else an extra few minutes =]
Hey friend I am having some problem with my bowflex dumbbell, the weights sometimes fall off and it’s scary if I do exercise like bench press or shoulder press.I saw someone posted a tutorial about tightening the nut fully so that the weights won’t drop, but your comment seems to say that don’t tight the nuts too much,so how do I go about this?
I just found this out the hard way as well! This video was way better than the first couple I found on disassembling and reassembling, but none of them mentioned this and they really should.
Amazingn video bro, I just bought a set for a dirt cheap price and it had a broken disc and I wasn’t sure what I’m in for but you totally just put my mind at ease thank you so much and have a great night.
Oh man - thank you so much for the directions. If I had not seen your video, I would have lost the ball bearings! The disc repair was 10 minutes with your guidance.
Ravi...use a dab of grease on the springs and on the ball bearings next time. They will not fall out or roll away when disassembling and reassembling your dumbbell.
Joseph, can't tell you how helpful this was. During a move, my plates were put in incorrectly which rendered the dumbbell useless. Using your how-to video I was able to completely fix them. Thanks so much for posting this!
Christopher Brooks Same issue with mine, thought they were ruined after the move but after using this video they are as good as new. Should be on the bowflex website...
Joseph, you, Sir, are worth your weight in gold. I just wish I had some gold to give you. Hadn't put much use on my dumbbells yet and, although careful, one of them jammed and wouldn't turn. Watched your tutorial twice, then went to work. Dumbbells working GREAT now thanks to your instruction. Didn't have to pack them up and send them off for repair. Very grateful. Hope you have a great week. You deserve it.
Thanks for posting this video. My disc's wouldn't turn anymore in the one dumbell. I think the bolts loosened over the years and eventually the ball-bearings fell out and the springs were catching in the ball-bearing holes thereby locking the plates. This deconstruction/reconstruction video was just the thing I needed to address the problem. Thanks again.
Many thanks for this tutorial! I called bowflex and asked for help. They said it’s not possible because only a machine can provide the proper torque to tighten the bolts. What a load of crap! They wanted me to buy a replacement bar for $60. Obvious money grab but I can see why they wouldn’t want to support people calling for help with their own repairs. Anyway I have the series two and only difference is the ends are not a sticker it’s a cap that can be pried off with the edge of a putty knife or six in one paint tool. Tightening the bolts does require some finesse because too tight and the disks won’t spin. Otherwise everything is spot on. Well done.
Thanks Joseph! I recently purchased a 1090, the 15lb would seem to fall off. Watching your video allowed me to break down the handle and I was able to find out the disc 5 snapped in the center radius, resulting in a bend. I wasn't able to identify it as quick because it was a crack that made the disc move when you press on it. Since it wasn't completely broken off it was disguised. Thanks again for the knowledge.
Add me to the list of folks grateful for this video. You make it look easy, or at least easier than it actually is (takeaway: there's a learning curve in play here), but you also make it DOABLE. I did it, after a few false starts. Saved a bundle versus ordering a new handle, which at the present time is impossible because there aren't any series 1 handles availalbe on line. SO thanks much, great job!
Mate you are a dead set legend, I thought I was gonna have to toss these and I saw your video. So you saved the life of a set of weights welldone and thanks
This helped me out a ton. I could not figure out how to get into them. Brand new, one of mine, (series 2, white numbers), was rattling and it was such a high pitched "ting" sound it was eye twitching. Every time you moved it even a little. Turns out, there was a 3rd, extra, ball baring in it. Took it apart following your instructions and it fell out. By the way, for those watching, you can tighten the big stem nut too much and it will prevent your bar from turning in the stand. I thought I did it wrong as it was frozen, but no. I just had it way too tight. Thank you Joseph.
It's almost impossible to make it too tight. I know. I've assembled and disassembled the 552 Series 1, Series 2 and 1090s many many times. They have fixed shaft lengths that actually prevent over-tightening. Your bolts/nuts will come into contact with the end of the shaft and not move further.
Thank-you so much Joseph. The customer service at bowflex is truly shocking, and this video really made my day. Now my bowflex's are fixed and I'm back crushing. Legend.
Hi Joe...this video saved my Bowflex set! I didn't get it done right the first time (its not you, its me) but eventually my repair was a huge success! Thanks very much for posting this....shaft and balls also made me laugh when I was struggling to get everything back together!
Excellent instructions, I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to make this video! I was able to repair my nearly 10 year old 552 dumbbells in minutes so that I can stop cussing at them for "slipping" and dropping plates :) & thanks for having the parts available to ship!
Thank you soooooo much! I was so bummed out. I thought my dumbbells were gone. You and one other video saved me hundreds of dollars and hours of searching to even find a a set. Amazing. Thank you!!!!!
Awesome video! Just repaired 2 dumbbells. Series 2 is like a mushroom cap. Keep prying along the edge until it pops off or slides sort of horizontally under top.
I found a set of these at a garage sale that needed repair. This video worked perfectly - thanks! Mine were version 2, but the design seemed to be identical as far as assembly is concerned. Thanks for the help!
Wow. Great video! I just bought my 552s a few days ago and I love them! I hope I never need to refer to your video, but I just thought I'd take a minute to tell you that you really explained and demonstrated this really well! Awesome job!
Joseph, great video! Worked perfect. I only had to replace disc 2 so before I loosened the nut I put a couple small clamps on the silver disks so the springs and bearings didn't need to be re-assembled. Saved me a lot of time. Thanks again!
Great video! This has solved my issue twice now of not being able to turn one of the dials. I don't know what happened, possibly a ball bearing fell out. Either way, breaking it down and putting it back together fixed the jam issue, and has saved me from buying a new set of dumbbells. Thanks!
Thank you for making and sharing this video. Saved me a lot of time. Note: I ha e a series 2, the I structions are basically the same for it's reassembly.
Great video 🎉 I watched a couple and they were half hour some of that show where to put the springs didn’t tell you the numbers on the plates so great job helped me out
Thanks so much for the video. I am not handy at all but was able to follow along and take my dumbbell apart. One dial wasn't rotating. I took the whole thing apart and I think it was a ball bearing out of place some how. Reassembled it and it works great now. Thanks!
Joseph, thanks for posting this video. Saved me a headache trying to figure out how to take apart my dumbbells to fix them (the locking button was jammed in place leaving the dumbbell in the unlocked position allowing the dial to spin while out of the base). All fixed now. Cheers!
thank you very much. I was able to restore my broken bowflex and its as good as new ! your video quickly showed me whether to go ahead or abort the hole set !
Thank you, Joseph. This amazing video has me using my Selectech dbells back at full capacity again, in no time and for very low cost for the part. I'm back in business with my home workouts, thanks to your vid.
Lol I changed all my exercises to one arm movements for like two years since one was broken. Took all of five minutes to fix these stupid things. Thanks!
Lifesaver, thank you so much for doing this video, I thought I was going to have to buy a new set when the handle grips went, but I spotted replacements on ebay and found this video!
Good video. After watching I was able to fix my dumbbell in 10 minutes with a $10 ebay replacement disk 3. The only thing I would add is that you sometime really have to crank on the endcaps to break the adhesive, and if you reassemble the bolt with too much torque then the dials don't turn. Loosen them up before you reattach the endcaps.
Great explanation... It help me repair my series 2 dumbells. My disk #2 cracked.. The explanation regarding the springs, ball bearing and the bottom / top large key helped. I had issue after initially replacing the disk. The first plate was lose the the ball bearing popped out... And during this fix -- I misaligned the bottom key.. Anyway I rewatched the part about the bottom key alignment and was able to get it fixed. Thanks for video..!!
Thanks for your help, Joseph. My girlfriend was using my weights the other day and the dials got misaligned and we couldn’t change weights. She was feeling bad and thought she broke the dumbbell. Now she feels better
@@cocraic_crypto I just bought a used pair of these bow flex one of the discs was cracked and saw your comment. If she was the one pursue her best wishes and good luck God bless.
The variation of dumbbells is extremely useful for a small person like me ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxP26Tir6n60vUkdtn4mbwhRO8cwuJQNy2 But the dumbbell size being large it's hard to do certain exercises like deadlift ( I have to have my hands and legs a bit wider to accommodate the size of the DB )Otherwise happy with the purchase. No excuse not to lift weight when it's snowing outside.
thanks much - worked great. The hardest part for me was removing the Bowflex logo disks to get to the large bolt head. The disks on both ends were brittle and would not come off with a small screwdriver no matter how much I tried.. I ended up drilling a hole right in the center above the bolt head then used a needle nose to pull it apart one brittle piece at a time. So no disks now, but the dumbbells work fine. I suspect the material of this black disk aged and other people will now start having the same problem - thanks again.
Jack, you had a 552 Series 2. In the video above he's working on a 552 Series 1. His end caps are flat flexible vinyl with an adhesive backing. Super easy to remove with a screwdriver Yours are plastic injection molded caps that actually insert down into the selector dial's cavity. Much more difficult to remove with wrecking them.
this video was fantastic. thanks so much for your help - i managed, on the first time using my brand new 552s, to get it stuck. turns out it i didn't put them on the cradle centered enough, couldn't turn the dial away from 52.5 on only one side. i was able to take it apart and use your tape trick, too! back to lifting :)
This is great. I have a broken disk 3 and have been trying to compensate by setting the dial higher on one side of the dumbbell. ordering a new part right now to get er fixed
Thanks! I have a broken disk 4, and I now feel much more confident that I will be able to repair it once the new part arrives (on it's way soon from ebay)
Thanks a ton for making this video! Saved me from throwing one of my barbells out, which had gotten horribly stuck. I took it apart and put it back together and it works like new now.
thanks for uploading this video it was very useful! I have to replace the part selector assembly Disk and this instructional video made it quick and easy.
Very easy to do. @1:55, Since I was only replacing the third disc, I took out the first two, swapped the broken one with a new one, and just stuck the other two disc in and rescrewed everything and was done. Takes less than a minute. Tighten as according, for it will determine how easy the dial will switch weights
I dropped mine during a move. a couple discs fell off and I cannot turn the dial now. I think Your video is going to enable me to fix the problem. Thanks.
Hiya Joe, complete disassembly in this manner is definitely not required. It overcomplicates the repair. But I understand this is a several year old video so it is what it is...people are lucky back then that you took the time to show them at least one method. If you'd like to see how this is done quickly and efficiently....I've posted a couple videos about it. The video I posted today is what led me to yours moments ago.
Hi Joseph! Thanks so much for the video. Unfortunately I can't get the end pieces off. They don't pop off or peel off and I am destroying them with my screwdriver. Any tips?
Thank you very much. I just fixed my handle with parts from a broken one I had. Even though mine are the newer model the process is pretty much the same.

We made our dumbell because of your video
Thank you for posting. I am confident I can fix now with the help of this video.
This is great. I have a broken disk 3 and have been trying to compensate by setting the dial higher on one side of the dumbbell. ordering a new part right now to get er fixed
Very well done video…..super clear and concise. Thank you so much!
Thanks! I have a broken disk 4, and I now feel much more confident that I will be able to repair it once the new part arrives (on it's way soon from ebay)
this was very helpful. thanks for taking the time to walk through this!
Thanks a ton for making this video! Saved me from throwing one of my barbells out, which had gotten horribly stuck. I took it apart and put it back together and it works like new now.
Just used your video to replace series 2 disk 2. Thank you very much!
Thank you Mr. Dupuis! Another Successful repair!!!
All this talk of shaft and balls is hilarious!
Thanks for the video dude!
Thanks so much, I had no idea how to fix it otherwise. This demo evens works with hpf not just bowflex.
Joseph, thanks man! You just saved me buying a new one.
You are my savior. Thank you for uploading this very thorough vid.
thanks for uploading this video it was very useful! I have to replace the part selector assembly Disk and this instructional video made it quick and easy.
Thank you Joseph! great video.
Very easy to do. @1:55, Since I was only replacing the third disc, I took out the first two, swapped the broken one with a new one, and just stuck the other two disc in and rescrewed everything and was done. Takes less than a minute. Tighten as according, for it will determine how easy the dial will switch weights
Excellent video, thanks for this. I just repaired my Nautilus with disk 2 and they are the exact same as the Bowflex.
Sir you are fantastic and I appreciate you. I had a broken disk 2 on mine and this helped me a lot. Thanks!
I dropped mine during a move. a couple discs fell off and I cannot turn the dial now. I think Your video is going to enable me to fix the problem.
Thanks.
Very detail oriented video, thank you.
Thank you for uploading this video brother!
Back in action. Thanks for the video and couple of laughs along the way ....
Great video! Very helpful and I was able to take mine apart and put them back together with no issues. Thanks!
