I just watched episodes 4 and 5 tonight and I really liked them.
I didn’t actually realize the prologue happened before. As I was watching I noticed a lot of environment details that seemed familiar but... I just couldn't put my finger on it. My brain was "I should realize something now, but it seems my 2 neurons can't do it".
I am not really trying to figure out every single thing, I am just going with the flow and loving it.

    Excellent discussion as always, gents.
I think an important thing to point out here as well: Robert Jordan frequently used the unreliable narrator device in this series, and did so to great effect, and it appears as if the show writers are employing it as well (as much as they can on screen, anyway). We see this in the Alanna/Warder scenes, as well as pretty openly in the Moiraine/Logain scene.
It’s a difficult tightrope for them since tv audiences may not necessarily catch on to it so it may come off as “bad writing”, but hopefully they can continue with it and how effective it can be right now.

    • @ACriticalDragon
      @ACriticalDragon  11 місяців тому +2

I am glad that you enjoyed it. The visual focalisation was shown in Season One so I am hoping they continue to use it and lean into it a bit more, but you are absolutely right, it can be difficult to communicate clearly enough for the majority of the audience. That is why there is usually a short montage sequence jammed in of the same scenes from a different perspective to shoe the differences and highlight the subjectivity. Blunt, but effective.

Great great discussion as always!! And as always I’m more with Philip BUT AP I get a lot out of your analysis and insights, because you turn my view a little more positive.
Particularly with the Lan stuff. As another commenter said, it feels like retreading ground, and I’m also just bored by it, and I also don’t like how Moiraine is treating him. But whatever - it’s not a huge drag, and your points about Alanna and the contrast between her and Moiraine (and their families) were really really good, stuff I hadn’t picked up on. So that’s some good value
Other than that tho, super strong episode. Perrin, the girls and Liandrin, Rand/Lanfear/Moiraine… so much good stuff this episode!!! I’m excited for a new one tomorrow and then another chat from you guys!!

Just like everyone else, I can only talk about what I see, what I enjoy, and what I don't enjoy.
Everyone has their own personal likes and dislikes, and nothing I say will change that, nor am I trying to change anyone's mind.
What I find curious though, is that often times, if people understand why a change is made or how it can connect that they suddenly change their mind. I find it so weird that a change can be considered 'bad' one moment, but then the individual viewer can have an 'aha' moment and suddenly the change is 'good'. It is the same change.
I completely understand how a change can be disliked one moment and then understanding changes it to liked, that is a perception rooted in personal preference and understanding, but teh evaluative change makes no sense to me.

Rand was sexual enjoyment with his relationship with Selene but I think it went deeper than that. He has had to walk away from his village and all his friends. We know that Rand was pretty sociable in Season 1 but now he can't be around the people he cares for. I think he was desperate for human contact and started developing first affection for Selene and then those feelings grew stronger.

Despite all my issues/criticisms of the show (and at the risk of being labeled a paid shill 😆), this was the first episode (S2E4) of the series that felt, more or less, like I was watching the wheel of time. I think the vision of the show is coming together, and it felt more confident? I dunno how else to describe it.
Maybe its just that stuff is finally happening, or that im happy to see more Rand, Perrin, and Mat 😅 But i thought the direction and pacing of this episode felt markedly different, in a good way, than previous episodes. It also feels like we are getting more efficient storytelling; worldbuilding, character, and plot happening simultaneously in scenes, which is almost always a good thing imo. Seems like we got past some of the makeup from S1, and they got enough foundation layed to kickoff the story. Season 2 undoubtedly has better production value, and i think there is demonstrable/ incremental improvements in pretty much all aspects behind the final product.
In any case, S2E4 was the first that piqued my interest in a few places, and actually left me curious to see next the episode, to my own surprise!
Having seen ep 5/6 (wow madeleine's performance, loved) im, dare I say, excited for the last 2 eps 😄 I hope we can avoid being too rushed in E7/8, here's hoping for a great climax and good start/cliffhangers for S3.

I felt this episode featured the weakest, most repetitive storyline yet in Allan Mandragon’s weekend retreat. @ACriticalDragon I have a theory on this part of the show. I believe Moiraine and Lan know how Alana operates. She is overly inquisitive of what Moiraine is up to, as we saw in her interactions with Moiraine in season 1. They are using this to send the message to the white tower that the forsaken are back. Moiraine can't do this herself as she has been exiled and wouldn't be believed. Siuan is slowly losing control of the tower to Liandrin and the red ajah and the forsaken being free would weaken her further. Therefore they have chosen Alana to deliver the message.

1.) It never even occurred to me that corrupting the Dragon's allies and support system was and is a goal of the dark. It totally escaped my notice that many of the Forsaken had beef with Lews Therin..so this tactic was used before to great effect. 2.) I'm not sure who was channeling on that mountain top when the fade attacked Rand and Selene. I can't tell if it was her or him. I kind of feel like this is a visual representation of unreliable narration. Rand thought he was channeling, but maybe Selene was doing the channeling? In the books I thought most Dark Friends were just power hungry and greedy. In the show we get villians who have other motives (ie. saving a child, taking away a gift that is more of a curse, or escaping the misery of their current incarnation). It makes it hard to know who is a dark friend and to anticipate their next course of action. 3.) Moraine's fatal flaw..she is driven at the expense of everything. 4.) I can understand how Rand goes crazy...you can't trust ppl, everyone is trying to use you, and it's getting harder to tell the difference btwn the waking world and the dream. There are a lot of really good things going on in the writer's room. If I could be a fly on the wall!!!!!
