For those who are reluctant to try chapulines, the “crickets” (grasshoppers) are picked from corn fields (not off the ground from random streets lol). Secondly, they roast the grasshoppers in red chile and they add lime and salt. They are toasty, not squishy. They have a light earthy taste. You don’t get sick from eating them. And they’re actually pretty good, especially with a cold beer.
Also very healthy too!
Interesting
Yes! I tried them when was living in Oaxaca and loved them! Would buy them regularly at the mercado, I miss Mexico 🥲
Chapulines are grasshoppers. Grillo is the name for cricket in soanish
Ud sí sabe.
My parents are from Oaxaca and we eat these almost every other week. My family really loves them. The way we do it is get the tortilla and lightly drizzle with water so it would soften a little then heat it up since it’s pretty hard and it could hurt your jaw if your not used to it.
Then we take it off the stove and add our favorite toppings like the beans and cheese Gordon used which by the way it’s called “quesillo”. Some even add cabbage for a bit of bitterness. It’s best accompanied with a piece of meat like chorizo, pork, chicken, or a thin piece of beef called “tasajo”.
What Gordon did was gourmet and oh man it looks so good. I’m glad he visited where my family comes from.

@@AnnaLVajda nah, in the south of Mexico they don't eat insects because they're poor, they eat them because of prehispanic heritage, they have plenty of access to beef, chicken, and pork, and they cook It very good as well, actually a lot of insect products are actually very expensive because they're hard to get, but you wouldn't understand someone willingly using insects as an ingredient because your eurocentered views tell you that it's disgusting. By the way, it's way more disgusting what you put in a sausage.

How are crickets "NICE"???
I'm from Oaxaca, living in Oaxaca, I appreciate your perfect pronunciation on the oaxaca food: mole, quesillo, crema, etc. and your effort on making if not 100 % original but really tasty looking tlayuda mr. Gordon
Fricking Gordon Ramsay sprinkling roasted crickets on a tortilla street food, and I'm like "Yeah, don't skimp out on the crickets!"
Wait, the crickets ARE actually a Oaxacan street food thing. I have eaten them at the Oaxaca main market. They're fried with a bit of chilli, and look reddish-brown when cooked. Edited to add: I'm not sure I'd call them a 'staple', though.
If Gordon Ramsay approves then I approve

Nope. I watch, then open the fridge and try something I saw. One of my favorite dishes (also because I always have everything fresh) are the spicey sausages with rice. Done in about 10 minutes and always changing because of the sausages. And it's bloody cheap too😏.
We Swiss should learn eating more than only the filet of an animal just because we can afford it.

I hope you can make some Peruvian Street Food some day! I strongly recommend Anticuchos
In Europe many people are sceptical about visiting Mexico because of the Cartel situation (atleast that’s my impression). I lived in Oaxaca for 3 months some years ago and I was never in a threatening situation whilst I was there (that being said I lived in a very chill surfing city, Puerto Escondido). I have been to a lot of countries, but if I were to pick one that everyone should visit atleast once it would have to be Mexico. Comfortable climate, very friendly people, the best cuisine imo (Tlayuda is btw delicious and very cheap), all around a great place to stay. Just be a decent human and treat people with respect and you will most likely have a great time!

Don't upset the bug people.
I think the reason why most his Mexican food looks unappetizing is because he tries to make something that is the complete opposite of a gourmet meal, into a gourmet meal. It feels like a whole lot of mental thought went into this, but it’s lacking true heart and soul. This is probably good, no doubt, but it will always fall short of authentic because authentic Mexican food is not gourmet.
