    Weight class exists for a reason, but letting the bigger guy know that before sparring, and asking them to go light and not escalate, takes some humility. Hope to be more like you when I get young Jeff. Great content as always.

      "go light and not escalate" - why does this take humility? This is the norm for sparring. Here in Asia, we are taught that the goal is sparring is not to knock-out your opponent, or to go ALL out; the purpose is to practice/improve form, spacing, timing, and stamina.
      I'm quite surprised by North America and western countries always having a problem with that 1 guy in the gym who is aggressive/has an ego. You never find that in a gym here in Japan cuz that person is kicked out or doesn't last very long.

    • @fllwurhrt
      @fllwurhrt Рік тому +10

      @@Moiez101 it isn't that difficult to imagine why two competitive guys hitting each other can escalate to harder and faster hits. *Edited for typo

      @@Moiez101 Go to an Asian boxing gym bro. It's a cultural thing with Muay Thai specifically and even then Thai fighters spar hard when they're preparing for fights. Thai fighters tend to do less hard sparring overall than say a western kickboxer because they fight way more often starting from when they are kids.

    To answer your 'how would this have played out if we weren't going hyper-controlled' question; It is close imo! Coach def has some serious pressure. He is someone who I would never want to sit in the pocket and trade shots with. Some of those body shots would've really hurt and you even mentioned the volume of punches he throws being a catalyst for you losing vision, and then taking some damage.
    That being said, your flying knee threats and ability to throw head kicks off weird angles def made him respect your space more, so I think at full speed, he would also have to respect that space even more. That allows you to play your game of crisp/clean strikes from the outside mixed with good footwork/head movement to do its magic.
    Thanks as always for the content Jeff and coach G!

    IMO light sparring gives people with a pressure based style a lot more leeway than they would get in an actual fights pace, especially when sparring someone who likes to fight on the outside. When there is no real threat of a dangerous counter it favours their ability to close distance by blindly walking you down, however it’s not necessarily realistic to how an actual fight would transpire.
    Unless you have a chin like Rodtang and can just walk through anything lol

    • @volodiaarnaud599
      @volodiaarnaud599 Рік тому +13

      But it goes both ways, its much easier to have dynamic striking and footwork in light sparring. Surviving the constant pressure from that type of guys in a fight or hard sparring is exhausting as hell, then your footwork and defense start to get lazy and you get cornered or caught with a big shot.

    • @Oll-lg7lu
      @Oll-lg7lu Рік тому +3

      @@volodiaarnaud599 on top of this in hard sparring I can never seem to be creative with my striking. It’s the same 4 combos every time because I don’t wanna get caught out of position and eat a hard shot to the chin.

    • @redsnflr
      @redsnflr Рік тому +3

      yeah it takes away a defensive & outside fighter's best weapon against them in hard counters, just look at all the brawlers Floyd Mayweather would neutralize in his fights, as the rounds would go on even though he's not a hard puncher the sharp counters let them know they'd get ko'd if they kept walking forward and eventually they'd just followed him around the ring, anxious to throw with a much lower output.

    Love your breakdowns Jeff. As a newcomer to Muay Thai coming from a taekwondoe background these help me learn a whole lot. It is not just about the kicks but your punchs/knees definitely can do a lot of damage. I struggle with my defense but have been practicing on the bag and shadow boxing. Weaving/doging is also something I want to add to my game but I got work on my footwork first. Great content Jeff also your sparring sessions with Kevin Lee are awesome to watch too.

I am certain many are giving you advice on this podcast that is negative or counter productive for you and you allow that negative to roll off of your back. I find you to be a professional to the maximum. I for one enjoy all you disclose and that you appear so humble. Your training is differrent than what I am use to; however, I not only find it productive but I think it is awesome to test new waters. Please keep up the great work.

    Very hard to say how a competitive match would go. The coach is very 1 dimensional when committing to his punches i.e stands in one spot, no angles. Your punches are very precise and utilize the angles. The bigger opponent obviously can take you off balance as you set to throw. So, if I were to frame out from covering up, they would push me. Not me push them. That leverage they would create would help push me off to the angle. I hope that makes sense.

(I do think the Thai guy would KO you the combination of size power and cardio would be too much you might able to touch him up for a round or two but I think he’d eventually catch you making a mistake finish you with a barrage of punches)

If you have the cardio and the toughness to do this style, your just simply a tank that keeps moving forward until the opponent goes down.
