Lyrics:
Something has to change
Undeniable dilemma
Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear
Constant overstimulation numbs me
But I would not want you any other way
Just not enough, I need more
Nothing seems to satisfy
I said, I don't want it, I just need it
To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive
Finger deep within the borderline
Show me that you love me and that we belong together
Relax, turn around and take my hand
I can help you change
Tired moments into pleasure
Say the word and we'll be
Well upon our way, blend and balance
Pain and comfort, deep within you
Till you will not want me any other way
But it's not enough, I need more
Nothing seems to satisfy
I said, I don't want it, I just need it
To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive
Knuckle deep inside the borderline
This may hurt a little but it's something you'll get used to
Relax, slip away
Something kinda sad about
The way that things have come to be
Desensitized to everything
What became of subtlety?
How can this mean anything to me
If I really don't feel anything at all? Yeah
I'll keep digging
Till I feel something
Elbow deep inside the borderline
Show me that you love me and that we belong together
Shoulder deep within the borderline
Relax, turn around and take my hand

I'm very sorry for your loss. I lost my mother to cancer in 2017. I feel the same way about Tool.
He's at peace, please heal
@@cassierbutler6073 There is no healing. There is a constant low level numbness with occasional outbursts of crying. For many of us all we can do is cope. It's O.K. It's life. Many people push away the pain. Tool hits the pain head on. Here's a quote by the great French actress, Catherine Deneuve, "Americans are happy, even if it kills them."
@@davidhunternyc1 There is healing but it takes time. Not healing is depression, and if it goes on for that long help might be needed. I have essentially lost everyone I ever loved, couple exceptions but they moved out of state. I am a cripple. I am trying hard to deal with that too, and constant pain. Pushing through illness. There is very little happy in many decades of memories. But I do not accept that it can never ever have better, because even if you tear up a little, some happy comes, and in the end, we none of us live forever. My most sincere condolences for all your losses.

I love music that makes grandmothers weep and children scream for their lives.
To me, the most impressive thing in this song is how Maynard manages to put a subject like this in such gentle words. "Turn around and take my hand" has to be one of the greatest lines in history.
turn around and take my hand 😈🤜🤜🤜🤜🤜👽
It can be taken a couple ways. I've heard so many people call this a love song. Fuckin kills me every single time.
@@tyshred9251 If you really dive into it you'll probably see (at least, this is what I saw) that it is a really clever play on words. The whole song is a double meaning. There's the obvious 'this will hurt a little' 'finger, elbow, shoulder deep' etc etc but if you perceive this song as being about becoming numb to society and just needing to feel something, like a connection with a person, it also works just as well.
It feels like a 'du hast/du hasst' style song. I really believe it's supposed to be a double entendre of sorts.
the song is about introspection and being overstimulated to the point that nothing gives any fulfillment anymore.
@@user-yk9df8gi3k the dragons we chase and the lengths we go to to chase it
Adam Jones has a *terrifying* imagination.
what?
damon swain he’s the guitar player of the band and he directs and produces all of their music videos. Not only is he a ridiculously talented musician but also a great graphic designer, such as this. Even worked on the makeup and production for movies like Terminator 2
Adam is amazingly talented, but my bet is Brothers Quay helped him,or at least gave him permission to use some of their characters for inspiration, but wanted no credit(they are very reclusive),Sober video is an almost exact copy of their character/video,a little too close to be an homage....Chet Zar also for sure helped
He's got a synesthesia
Look through what may be terrifying and find the beauty within it. Humans hate the unknown, so try feeling the unknown and allowing it. :)

Who else remembers seeing this on MTV2 back in the day, and it being called 'Track #1"?
oh my god, did they really named it like that? Hahahhahaha, i didn't knew that
MTV was awesome when they started out. They showed everything also metal, punk even death metal
In Portland, we had a local station that would play RAGE music videos all night. Creepy Tool videos were sprinkled in with all of the other 90's alt & metal classics. *nostalgia intensifies
Do remember Matt Pinfield shaking his fist at the camera when introducing this as 'Track #1' back in the day.
Bruh, I discovered Tool randomly watching a top ten metal tracks list on FUSE at like 3 in the morning, I wanna say 15 years ago. Song was amazing, but video was creepy as shit. Now, this was early internet days and I didn't notice the band name, all I had was track #1, so I waited another week and caught the video again same time. Hard to believe TOOL made songs about constant simulation and pleasure back when smartphones and personal internet were unimaginable.
drugs were simply more in their place, different thing but its all the same
He is saying “constant OVERSTimulation”Constant overstimulation can happen to anyone. Especially if (you have mental health disorders) this one particularly is about Borderline Personality Disorder. I have the same thing. It can be overwhelming to encounter anything that is producing too much sound (especially), too much taste, too much texture to the skin or tongue, or too pungent of an odor. Maybe messiness or disorganization to the eyes? I don’t experience that one so I can’t say. As for not being satisfied with anything pleasurable: like sex, happiness, indulging in anger, substance abuse, people or relationships period, etc... that further concretes and affirms that he is indeed referring to Borderline Personality Disorder. Also he does mention being “finger” “knuckle” “ elbow” deep inside the “borderline”❤️ have a wonderful day

The beauty of this song, as with all Tool songs, is that it’s a sweet ear worm that gets into your brain and swirls around and let’s the listen apply their own meaning.
Hey kids, this is what it sounds like when you're masters of your craft
This is what I heard when masters perfected the art of making music together. All woven together so magnificently. So beyond and outside of what we used to consider the limits. They looked at what Pink Floyd did for music and did it again, exponentially over and again. Far above any. All of Billboard's Top 10 spots were occupied with Tool songs on the day Fear Inoculum drooped. No other band/artist can say that. Tool is the Supreme Ruler of all musicians, imho
They've said in interviews that part of Tool's schtick is stimulating the emotion of 'pretentiousness' in the listener... imagine if they tried that *WITHOUT* being *REALLY* good musicians... 🙃
I mean, I know you have to take *EVERYTHING* that MJK says with a pinch of salt, but...

Aenima may be one of the most played albums in my collection. I have had it since it came out in the 90s and still have it in regular rotation. It is one of my all time favorite albums ever made.
The fact that everyone ignores that this song is about feeling apathetic just as much as it is about a*al fisting just makes it much greater
The greatest thing about tool is if you follow their albums chronologically you can feel them starting from a dark place and gradually evolve spiritually every album after. Their final album will be their souls apex, they will play their final concert and vanish and transcend into the ether.
Haha Haha I like that😊👌
That same thing happened with Opeth too, strong recommendation
@@krige250 very true, you can also see the genre shift, with Opeth starting from a melodic death/black metal sound and TOOL as an alternative metal band, both going into prog rock more and more as time passes. my 2 favorite bands currently :D

This was their creative peak. I’m 43. I’ve been balls deep since Undertow. (I found Opiate after Undertow) if you think Fear Inoculum is their best work, then you’re lying to yourself. The analogy is so perfect here. That human's addiction cycle tends to scramble as far down the rabbit hole as physically possible, or in this case, your arm entirely up your own ass due to desensitization. Most will do anything to get their fix, ignoring all consequences til they reach a point of not caring about anything anymore. Its a passive form of suicide. Hollowed out the insides that make us human by technology and consumerism. Just continues to get more and more true as time goes on.
This analogy is absolutely 100% spot on! Bravo

Best band of the Nineties.... underrated
I haven’t heard this song since I was a teen, nearly 30 now.. still had it word for word.
Adam Jones is not only a great guitarist who brings a lot to TOOL sonically, but he also knows what the hell he’s doing when he makes these videos. The bleak color scheme and dust like makeup on the figures creates an almost claustrophobic feel; very affecting. My favourite shot is when the larger figure looks through the rectangular hole in the wall and sees the skinnier figure reaching out while the lights manically flash. Something straight out of a horror movie. Phenomenal job, Adam Jones. These videos are not only entertaining and fit their respective songs very well, but are also masterclasses in filmmaking.

It any other way
It's not enough
I need more
Nothing seems to satisfy
I don't want it
I just need it
To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive.
Finger deep within the borderline
Show me that you love me and that we belong together
Relax, turn around and take my hand
I can help you change
Tired moments into pleasure
Say the word and we'll be
Well upon our way
Blend and balance
Pain and comfort
Deep within you
Till you will not want me any other way
It's not enough
I need more
Nothing seems to satisfy
I don't want it
I just need it
To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive.
Knuckle deep inside the borderline
This may hurt a little but it's something you'll get used to
Relax Slip away
Something kinda sad about
The way that things have come to be
Desensitized to everything
What became of subtlety?
How can it mean anything to me
If I really don't feel anything at all?
I'll keep digging till
I feel something
Elbow deep inside the borderline
Show me that you love me and that we belong together
Shoulder deep within the borderline
Relax, turn around and take my hand
wait is this song about anal fisting?
NST Kr3w yes
@@ryansalyinglion3683 The more you know
If you believe this song is literally about fisting then you are sorely mistaken. It is being used as a metaphor, people who have become numb to the point they are willing to go to extremes just to be able to feel anything. "I don't want it, I just need it, to breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive". You do something that gives you any sort of satisfaction eventually you become numb to it, then you go one step further, maybe you feel a little something again.. and then it's gone. You can always push the boundaries further but in the end you will just become numb to it.
@@djinngeist114 yeaaa but why is the song called stinkfist tho XD
This song always reminded me of when I was struggling with addiction. Not enough, I need more, don’t want it I just need it. I hated my addiction but wanted so much to sober up. 5 years drug free!
Hell yeah Kimberly! Same here, this song helped me rationalize the thoughts I was feeling after withdrawals. It made me realize how I obsessive I was just to feel something, dark times... But the future is looking bright! 9 years clean! Never going back.
Good job sister!!!!
I LOVE ART! Perfect visuals for the song. I love it. ❤ Pure art.
This song Has made me cry numerous times. It perfectly describes the feeling of isolation and despair coupled with intense drug use. Both of which I am struggling deeply with.
same here man, just stay true to yourself and remember who you are don't get lost and forget who you are, from someone who's been lost to someone in the particular situation I've been in, it gets better my dude it just takes time, remember you have a purpose here
Hang in there, you got this
We believe in you. You can make it. From one junkie to another you got this.
As a person who came from that, keep pushing forward, you can make it 💪🏼
Yeah bro, it’ll feel that way, even later in life. The high fades but not as fast as your social life / family life if you don’t get a hold of your addiction. Been there too bro, too many times.
Everything about the symbolism in this video is very urban based.
Ex: Eating the nail; becoming the nail; hitting the nail on the head.
Meaning being the ugly truth and having to live with fitting a stereotype. Whether that is addiction, abusive tendencies, povert, etc.
Everything is covered in a LAYER of DUST. Layers of meaning. Once the cover of the dust is swept away, the characters are naked, no longer having the crutch that masked their inner appearance to themselves and to each other.
The room full of mirrors represents the type of 'empathy' or 'love' the characters have for each other; they don't see the other person (the reason for the barrier of the wall that is broken by the female's touch) but instead a mirror of themselves.
Mirrors also tend to represent grooming, which suggests the relationship between the characters revolves around sex/personal gratification instead of a genuine compassion.
Alex Jones is a gifted artist through and through.
Haha ur gay
Over thinking over analyzing

@@trevorgoodchild8266 many of their songs and videos have that level of complexity, so there is much to uncover
This music video changes every time I watch it I swear
I know!!
I’ll tell you why I have a been a life long Tool fan! One my sister bought me Anema for my 18 birthday 🥳 as a gift 🎁! Best gift I ever got. I still have it the weird photos moving behind pretreated plastics. Tool reminds me to step up my fucking game! If I write ore play anymore I know make sure I’m doing something that pushes the limits of what I can do!
Never heard of Tool before but this song is amazing.
Welcome to the rabbit hole my friend keep going it goes way deeper
They don't have any bad songs.
listened to them more since then?
I call bull...
Beyond incredible. Ironically, this one does seem to satisfy...
U must be highly educated. I just started college and this would of never been literally as meaningful in the past. Thank you 🙏
this vid is like hellraiser and skorn combined and the song is amazing. Excellence all around
STILL my favorite Tool song... Yes you have to get used to the subject matter. Underneath it all? Its a finely crafted rock song with spectacular drumming🎵🥁🎶
I'LL

Sounds really powerful like you are trying to feel something by breaking your head against the wall.
I kept scrolling down the comments and found yours right on this part of the song :) I'll keep digging now

What a F’kin masterpiece this song is….
When Tim Burton remakes Kubricks' "A Clockwork Orange" it will be Tool videos that Alex is forced to watch. 😂
This is exactly how I dream after returning from deployment in Afghanistan.
I stopped dreaming all together.
This is how I dream ever since I came into this physical matrix
Your comment is funny and sad & disturbing at the same time. I hope you're doing as good as can be & thanks for your service.
If I were a couple's counselor, I'd play the musak version of this in the waiting room.
Cynce you reflect what you are doing, thinking, and being 💯💯💯
The peak of rock videos occurred in the 1990s with groups like this. The comedy of the 1980's gave way to the sophistication of this and other efforts. After that, there was basically nothing much.
In 2020 this is still one of the most visually stunning videos ever.
Have you seen Peter Gabriel Sledgehammer?
The video alone is better (more disturbing) than 90% of the horror movies and video games I know, that's saying something.
@@lmeza1983 Yeah I still view these music videos have lore outside of lyrics. Like this one having mutated beings fed up being hidden away or are demons living in a abandoned place tolerating eachother.
Adam Jones, lead guitarist is the visual creator of these stunningly disturbing images your vicarious self is viewing.
I don't think you know what vicarious means
@@Sinoops Experienced in the imagination through the feelings or actions of another person. Used in the song Vicarious the lyrics "Vicariously I, live while the whole world dies" your experiencing the earths death through the other.

Adam Jones didn't do the video for Vicarious though.
