Good video, like the template for the waves. Your flag dimensions are off just a little though - the stripes should be 36 inches long not 40. Length of US flag is 1.9 x Height, height is 13 x stripe width, so using 2x4 for your stripes the actual stripe width is 1.5 inches, therefore Length = 1.5 in x 13 x 1.9 = 37.05. The waves in the flag would further shorten the length a little so cut length of stripes only need to be 36 inches long. The size of the Union Height = 7 x 1.5 in = 10.5, Union Length = 0.76 x Flag Height (19.5 in) = 14.8 in. Amazon has the Union stencil in a 10.5 in x 14.8 in size.
I think this is the best looking wavy flag I have seen. The waves look very natural.
Thank you!
@@diydallasHI I love the flag I am going to try and make this myself. What is the exact acrylic paint you used and what countersink drillbit did you buy. Sorry just new to woodworking and not sure if there is a certain size needed. Thank you very much!
NICELY done sir. One question. When cutting the 2x4’s into stripes, can you use the secondary pieces to make a second flag? I’m talking about how you essentially cut each 2x4 in half. I’m wondering if the remnant pieces will assemble for a second flag.
I saw another video where the UA-camr used the offcuts to make a second flag. I think the key is to make sure the wave template goes down the center of the 2 by 4
Made one, working on another. Only change I made was a light coat of white stain on the white areas (bare wood on yours). Painted the field white, added stars then sprayed the blue. Great video for instruction, wasn’t sure if above my paygrade (am no carpenter). And my bench top band saw didn’t like cutting the length 2x4 so clamped on one end and used jig saw, worked fine. Thanks again.
Fantastic build and very creative technique for the waves! Well done.
Thank you!
Absolutely awesome. I'm not a woodworker or don't have any tools but I would pay to go to a class to be able to make this. Great job, best I've seen so far.
I'm late to the game, but I want to thank you for the video. I've watched multiple waving flag build videos, and this is by far the best way I've seen to do this. Great work.
Thanks for the video. Best one I've seen so far. Really like the jig you made to make it easy to make the waves on the flag.
Sir I have got to admit of all the processes in making these flags that have seen you have got it down to a science,
Thank you!
My absolute favorite wavy flag tutorial! If I understand this correctly, if you cut each of the 40in 2x4s along the stencil line, you would get 2 flags worth of stripes right?
Yes
Quite tedious, but beautiful!
Thanks for sharing!
beautiful! Can you please help me understand the union process more? How exactly do you get the stars to "tattoo" the piece like that? Thanks
Is the spacing on your template 1 inch apart? Also what's the size of the union you put on your flags and where can I buy those? Thank you
I run my boards thru a planer but still have space at times in between the stripes, even using an extra screw to secure them along with the glue, do you not get or mind the lines between the stripes. I’ve made a lot of them but still have to go back and fill the gaps at times, usually with glue, wiping off the excess. Thanks
On second piece marked. Did you line up with 2 inch mark? Thank you. Best flag on youtube youtube
Agreed. Best method I've seen. Just beautiful
Great flag! Do you measure the 14 3/4" following the waves or do you measure straight across?
I try my best to measure with the waves!
@@diydallas Thank you .
This is fantastic! Question: in the video you call your marks "1 inch marks" but your template has them spaced at 1.5 inches. Does this matter? Do you recommend 1 inch or 1.5 inches?
With the Kutzall Shaping Disk, which grit did you find works best for this?
I went with the medium disk. I haven't tried any of the others.
Love this flag and the video. I printed the wave stencil but it only measures 40 in. Did I miss something because it looks like you are using a longer pattern piece to allow for the movement of the 1 inch increments. I have cut all of my 2x4 ‘s but I’m afraid to start cutting the waves until I’m sure I understand.
looks like it needs to be min 53 inches, just continue pattern on a longer board.
Great idea cascading the curve at inch intervals for a repeatable design - much faster than flap sanding from the squared stock.
Doug, absolutely!
Dude. Definitely the best waving wooden flag I’ve ever seen. Awesome work! 🇺🇸🦅😎
Using the Cricut to make the vinyl stars was brilliant, that really is _the best_ way to do the Union. Nailed it, dude.
Zach
I'm with you concerning the stars. I wish that I had a cricut.
Great video. Thanks.
Thank you very much for the video and the pattern! Beautiful flag.
Can you tell me what style blade you used on the Bandsaw to cut those curves on the 2x4 material (Hardback, Flexback and tooth count). Thanks, getting materials ready to make one.
I printed out the template and it is only 41” long it seems to me yours is longer that that?
He cut his boards to 40", so they are the same size.
That is phenomenal craftsmanship!!! This is a wood project I am going to attempt!!!! Thank you so much for sharing..
Merry Christmas from my family to yours
Awesome video. What are the dimensions of the union?
@diy dallas for the last steipe on top did u take your stencil 1 step the other way?
Great video. I particularly liked your method of putting the stars in place👍
How did you create the first initial stencil? Just wing it till it looks good or was it a pattern or stencil from somewhere?
Where do you get your stars from, one of the nicest flags I've seen.
Nicest most realistic looking waving wood flag in UA-cam! Nice job, learned a lot!
Much appreciated!
Fantastic! Just Fantastic! Great work!
Just wondering , don't know if i missed it in your video... but the waves in the pattern piece, are they the exact wave down the length or does it not matter, and you can make what ever wave each their own shape?
You can make the wave each there own shape. It takes a bit of experimenting.
Hey bud, quick question? I use stains mostly and never experimented with the acrylic paint.. what color blue and red is this?
I have experimented with different reds, but this is true navy and dark red. They also have flag red, which is a bit more vibrant.
Wow! Probably not in my skill level but certainly not in my patience level ("five hours later" and that was just for the easy sanding part!).
Satisfying to watch with such a beautiful result!
Thank You!
Very Nice! Can I ask what kinda Vinyl Mach and or Model do you use? Thanks. And does it require a monthly subscription?
And what size it the Union? Thanks Again.
I used a Cricut Explore 2 to cut the vinyl. I think design space does have a monthly fee, but it isn't outrageous.
@@jamesbarlowjr.3762 14 3/4 x 10 1/2
@@diydallas Thanks so much for all the info. I’d love to make one but I don’t have a printer like that. How much do they cost? Thanks Bud! Love how you did this! It’s Awesome! 🤝
Please tell me where you got the background music??? I love it. So calming
You know when you cut the wavy lines what do you do with the cut off part do you get two flags out of the timber
I've been making these using flap discs and was wondering how long the kutzall disc lasts?? How many flags can you get out of one?? I use about one disc per flag, they wear out pretty quick.
Good question. I have done about 7 flags so far. No signs of slowing down yet. After going through plenty of the flap discs, I think its a relatively good investment.
DIY great video! I appreciate the perfect mix of "how to" without having to watch a 60 minute video.
Do you sell these? If so, what is the price?
Have you ever put a frame on one of these bad boys?
I appreciate it! I do sell these. I’m working on my website right now, and it will hopefully be up soon. I have been selling them for $175. I made 2 with frames, and surprising people like them better without.
What's the size of your flag? Also the size of the union. Beautiful peice friend 🇺🇸
Finally about to start this project, been wanting to for a while. Quick question, since you cut each 2x4 wave pattern similar (but off set) could you use the other half of the 2x4 to make a second flag?
Never mind, i just found the same question below and your response, thanks!
Yes absolutely. It’s the beautiful thing about this process. 2 for 1!
Thank you, I will attempt with my son
I made this as a belated Christmas present. It is beautiful! I did notice that even though I screwed the pieces together, there was some accordion style bending. I went ahead and used a couple thin pieces of wood to reinforce it from the back so there was no movement to the pieces. I will hang some heavy duty sawtooth hangers on those pieces of wood to finish up. Thanks so much for the idea and instructions.
Yea, I have definitely had that happen to me as well. It's tough finding straight lumber, which doesn't help at all!
I built a jig to help me keep it flat when I screwed it together.
Jig = plywood 25” X 42” plus a 42” 2x2 on top side and 23” 2x2 on left side (make sure it is square)
This allows me to butt each board next to each other
@@BigDaadee that is actually a great idea
VERY nice! My only complaint is that the video is a bit dark. Totally love the build and I am looking forward to trying it myself!
Very nicely done. I envy you having a place to do that kind of work.
Would be interesting to see an inverse flag from each cutaways. If you use 2x6 you can get 2 flags from the boards. The offcut would be your second flag.
There is another guy on here can't think of the name that did that gets 2 flags out 1 set of boards
I personally like the music - GREAT job and don't listen to the few haters - they have nothing better to do. I'm working out in my mind the best way to do the star field, but I will probably end up following you route. Again - GREAT JOB!
Much appreciated!
Are the scraps from cutting the wavy part sufficient for creating a second flag?
So this is probably a dumb question. But I’ve been watching a lot of these different wavy flag videos and no one explains what they are doing in regards to how they are hanging them. Any suggestions on the best way to mount them on a wall?
You Could put 2 screws into the back and then go to Home depot or Lowes and use piano wire( i think that's what they call it) or just tell the employee you're hanging a sign that weighs probably 15-20 lbs. I'm actually going to make one this week. Ill weigh it once I'm done.
Beautiful craftsmanship !!!!
What do charge for a small wavy flag? Can you also do the USMC FLAG?
watched your video and a few others. Yours is definitely the best and you do a great job. The repeating music is annoying, but your flag and craftsmanship is by far superior!!
Thanks! Yea, sorry about the annoying music. First video 🤣
Great video and project! Question on the template. When I printed it out it seems a little small. At the tallest point it was only 1-1/2" Am I supposed to print this out at a larger scale? What should that dimension be at the highest point of the curve? Yours looked just a little short of the 3-1/2" Any clarity here is appreciated. Thx!
Hey Donny. So I have experimented with the height of the template. To get a bit more height, I usually just use the one provided, but hold it about 1/2-3/4 inch higher on the 2 x 4 before I trace the line to compensate. Hope this makes sense.
@@diydallas I'm hoping you see this! I've tried both of your links here, and I've gone to Fisher's Shop and tried their links, but, those files don't seem to exist on google drive anymore. is there another location to download them? Alternatively, is there anything special about the curve template that I should be keeping an eye on if I were to make my own?
Very nice work. Gonna have to try that. Thanks for the lesson.
I noticed that you matched the end of the template with the end on the first piece then the instructions say to line the #1 mark up with the edge for the second piece but the video shows the template was moved two inches to the #2 mark, This is very confusing. Should the offset between the first and second pieces be 2 inches?
Yes, this is exactly how I thought I would do it after seeing it done on Fisher's Shop's youtube channel. Did you make the vinyl cutout svg? Are you willing to share the file? Pretty please. 😀
You seem to have marked your first piece at the end of the template then moved to the number two, so not sure what is the right way? Beautiful flag.
I noticed that you cut off a significant thickness off the 2x4 making the waves. Can’t you use those offcuts for another flag?
Yea, absolutely! Took me a few to realize that. If you are relatively careful with your cut, you can use the off cuts for a second flag.
Great video… but am having issues location proper stain for red and blue!
I would love to try to build one of these flags for myself. Where can i purchase the stars of the correct size to fit this flag?
What is the actuall width and thixkness of your lumber? Is it actually 2inch by 4 inch?
Yes 2 x 4 which is actually 1 1/2 d 3 1/2
Beautiful work. I love it ❤
That's perfect, amazing, awesome, and omg
God bless you. Brother
Thanks for sharing your video!!
🇺🇸❤🇺🇸❤🇺🇸❤🇺🇸❤
Like the song lol . Relaxing who is that . Great job on the flag !
Thank you! I just make loop some samples together as far as background music. Most people hate it. It is a bit much 😂
Awesome video!!!! Do you by chance have an associated video on here somewhere on how you set up and made the Union Stars using the cricut? Did you have to design the Union Stars yourself?
I don't, but that may be a beneficial video to upload. I purchased a svg file from Etsy, and scaled it to where I needed. Super simple process.
Thank you. I ended up buying my vinyl stars off Etsy for now.
The first flag, I applied directly to the wood. Not sure if I used too much pressure or what but small slivers of wood came up when I removed that I had to repair.
Since then, I put down a coat of poly on the surface in the Union area and that solved the problem for me.
Anyway, I think using the vinyl stars is definitely the way to go vs trying to hand rout them with a dremel. Looks so much nicer.
Thanks again for putting this video out there
I'm a bit thrown by the stencil. Line up flush on the left for Board 1. On Board 2, line up stencil flush on the right? Set me straight.
Can you tell me where you purchased the Union Jack it looks like it is a peel & stick vinyl ( outstanding work )
I actually make this using a Cricut Vinyl cutter and design space. I think they can be purchased on Etsy.
I’m sure I’m missing something obvious but the video has the plank lengths at 40” but I see comments below at 37”? The template is 40”?
Could another be made with the off-cuts I wonder?
Absolutely!
Looks awesome what does something like that go for
I usually sell them for $200 in my area.
How long was the stencil that you used
AWESOME !!!! Would you mind telling me the dimensions of the union. I would really appreciate it. Thank you ! For a great video.
Did you ever get the measurements?
14 3/4 x 10 1/2
@@jamesbarlowjr.3762 You can also do a Google search for flag dimensions and get all you need.
Thank you very much have been wanting to make a wave flag
Sorry I'm so late to the party. Amazing work!! You dumb it down enough for us beginners and inspired me to do it. Is the stencil about 1 inch at the lowest point? Or did I print it wrong?
Thank you! It has been a while since I printed that first stencil. From what I remember, I had to improvise slightly.
Very nice job how long did it take you in total? Seems like that was a lot of work. But very nice and product.
You are the best!!!! Like ur utensil, what are the dimensions? Almighty!!!!
That is AWESOME thank you for sharing. Once I get my shop finished this is going to be one of the projects that I make.
👍👍👍🇺🇸... Pride for Perfection
Excellent job Dallas why not brads instead of screws to save time
Brads would definitely be quicker. I've just had problems with warped 2x4's, so I used screws to really pull them together to prevent gaps.
Awesome work. How big is the union on the flag?
14 3/4 wide
Thank you so much for sharing this video 👍 Best Flag I ever seen!!.. Definitely made me a subscriber
Awesome tutorial! I’m going to give it a try. Thanks!
Beautiful, I’m going to try this 😅
where did you get the template from every time i try to print it it comes out to small and when i make it bigger it cuts half of it out
If I remember right when I printed it out, it came out multiple pages and I cut and taped them together. Hope this helps.
Make sure your printer is set to 'actual size' and not to 'fit to page... that was my problem
What type of acrylic paint do you use? Awesome video thank you!
I believe it is Apple Barrel acrylic paint. You can pick it up at Walmart or Hobby Lobby.
Thank you
What color of red did you use?
This is a cinematic masterpiece
I'm going to try and make this cool flag, one question I printed out the stripe template and it comes out each inch is 3/4 inch, and not a ture inch. am i doing something wrong?
Hmmm. Not really sure. If it isn't exactly an inch, you will still get a great result. I have experimented with different spacing.
Just made it and came out great. Thanks for the video and template.
Great to hear!
Have made a few of these myself using the same method except for the stars in the union, love the effect you got how do you do these and what machine or do you sell these?
Amityfd1, I've just picked up some tips here and there from videos on UA-cam. Put my own spin on it. I sell these for $150.
@@diydallas beautifully work and patience but 150 seems very low,iI mean you spent 5 hours carving and sanding alone
@@johnosullivan8068 Yeah that’s the problem with wood working no one seems to appreciate what goes in to hand making something! It’s sad! And a lot of times when I make some it seems I break even! Which is not the way it’s supposed to be!
Companies don’t survive by “Breaking Even”. But it’s gotta be the market and where your at.
But I totally agree with you Dallas’s work is Stellar and if I were him I’d definitely try and get more for it. No one should undercut themselves! 🤝. I don’t have a Cricut Mach. so I’m not to sure how I’m gonna do it! If you have any ideas on that for me please let me know. Thanks!
Is there any way you could put a link in to where you bought the vinyl cutout?
Cody, I actually cut the union vinyl myself with a cricut machine. It's pretty simple if you know someone who has one. I believe Etsy may be your best bet if you would just like to purchase a few.
Love this video and really like the music!!
Is it possible to achieve the wood burning with a heat gun?
Nice work.
On my list.
Thanks for the reminder.
were did you get vinyl cut out for stars, it would be a great help thank you
What is the size of the union template ,like measurements
14 3/4” X 10 1/2”
It's Monday morning ..this is just what I needed to motivate me ..great video..keep up the good work ..
Thank you for watching!
I've had that exact same bandsaw for 30 years
DIY Dallas... Such a great job I think everyone should have one. Have you put a price on reproducing for sale?
Thank you for doing this and sharing it with us!!
Of course!!
Did you leave the length 40 inches ??
Yea, I've experimented with different lengths and that seemed to be the sweet spot.
