I wanted to try something different and challenge myself and see if I could use cheap 2x4s from the home center and make a stunning piece of fine furniture. Even though I was pretty picky when selecting these 2x4s they still had their flaws. None were perfectly straight or flat, and even the best ones still had ugly knots to work around. I went into this woodworking project confident that this cabinet would come out pretty good but I had no idea it would come out as good as it did. I was blown away by the results and nobody in a million years would guess this cabinet was made from the cheapest wood you can get.

My father used to make furniture from orange box wood 2 X 1 planed down ,it was in the 50s in UK not much material to be had ,no such thing as an electric drill etc he had a hand plane ,a hand saw,a hand drill and chisels. He would finish the furniture with French polishing and like you he could create fine furniture from nothing. Built a desk for my older sister that eventually became my pride and joy lasted 50yrs it was destroyed in an accident whilst moving ,broke my heart. Thank you for reminding me of the times I used to watch him work and wonder what he would have done with all your magnificent tools. His favourite joint was dovetailing.

@@lucyferina Having recently built a shelf out of 2x4s using cheap crappy tools, I beg to differ. I would argue that *at minimum* you need a table saw and a planer to accomplish an even halfway decent job(which btw I don't own, and yes, the shelf I built is shitty).

At Lowes I found the 10' 2bys to be the cleanest needing very little picking through the pile to get just the right boards. I am very happy with my results. The piano stand cost about $25 in materials and about 6hrs of work.

In fairness I recently built a small nik nak box using cheap spruce wood and after sanding it completely flat and going through the sandpaper grits up to 400 I was left very impressed. The surface was smooth everywhere and felt like glass to the touch. When I applied danish oil it left me with a box that not only shimmers perfectly in the right light but almost reminds me of maple. I never realised how attractive spruce could actually be

I think it's weird that people comment on how you use a Festool and then switch to Harbor Freight clamps because every woodworker I know, including myself, has a shop full of mismatched brands. What I think is even weirder is that they're commenting on your mismatched tools and not the fact that your shop looks like a techy-type shop instead of a woodworking shop. Yours is one where I would expect to see the tools of your trade being computers and robots ***cough, cough, CNC, cough cough*** instead of saws and clamps. I love that you don't have wood panels for walls and a mostly brown background because it gives us woodworking viewers something different and unique to look at. And by the way, you can never use too much walnut, damn haters 😉. Keep up the good work, man. I also enjoy the banter between you and Daniel. Reminds me of a talk show dynamic where you, the host, talks to the announcer over at the podium. I made 3 chairs as a total rookie woodworker. First 2 were out of pallet wood and 3rd was strictly 2x4 wood. I made them for work so people could have something to sit on at breaktime. They loved my chairs so I got offered the maintenance position and a raise. I just love it =)

@@tjumuc Yeah, stupid one-time-use tools! It's too bad I can't use them for other projects.

I would not say you talk too much -- your yak-yak to whack-whack ratio is much better than average. Clear & succinct without unneeded rambling. Keep up the great work!!

I’m torn whether is your best video, but am confident that that’s the best Squarespace ad I’ve ever seen. Whatever they’re paying is not enough.
