Oh yeah new Wes video. I love your content man, you've really sucked me into the lore with how you present your content. The story about the sisters brought an actual tear to my eye
That would be pretty cool, but since there are no official rules for such a thing, it couldn’t be used on the tabletop unless someone came up with homebrew rules for it and played somewhere that allowed such things.
I mean if you don't want a rule stick up your arse and you have a spare model to be used as a tech priest that needs to be model to model to the plasma team or else risk explosion
Heavy bolters are kinda weird. Some may say it's a 1 inch caliber, others may argue it's a .998. But ALL official artwork shows heavy bolters having can sized rounds of at least 2 inches or more. In Ephrael Stern comic, a bolter hits and causes an effect very similar to an RPG
That Reddit post I mentioned in the video made some really good points. 100 caliber round is ridiculous, but the astartes are 8 ft tall and their guns are huge, so even a bullet of that size coming out of it just doesn't make sense considering the dimensions of the bolters barrel.
@@weshammer Well, 40k is made with a "rule of cool" I know it doesn't make much sense, like how you fit 30 .75 bolts in those magazines. And artwork, like black library, suffers of the same problem as having so many authors with different visions. Add to that the ONLY size GW has given is about an Astartes bolter, even sisters have no official size.
@@weshammer I always figured that what we’re seeing extruding from bolters isn’t exactly the barrel, it’s a muzzle brake. And that’s the reason for the disparity.
I got to say man since I discovered you on tik Tok I have been a fan ever since, but the pure good-hearted sportsmanship you showed in the video with majorkill sets you apart from most others. It's people like you that give this hobby such a good name, so on behalf of the Warhammer community I just want to say thank you for being such a bright shining star in a Galaxy full of grim dark!
For me I'm torn. On one hand the lascannon. Simple powerful laser cannon. On the other as I look at my ten man heavy bolter support squad I think "more dakka" and the Orky side come out
The truth without some sort of cannon your desire for dakka will be unquenchable. I would never use one lascannon myself as this throws off my perception of dakka. Do I want a dakka lightshow or dakka barrage? The question is always answered by plasmacannons
Hey Wes. Hope you’re doing awesome. Something you should mention when the bolter is explained next time is that it is indeed based on reality. We did make two stage munition in the real world and it turned out to be way too expensive and of course we have a long way to go to perfect it. But something was actually put into production. Unfortunately now famous due to Battlefield V (us tank enthusiasts liked the hipster status of knowing something so badass that not much of the world knows about) the Sturmtiger used two stage munitions. There’s actually footage of it being used in anger in the Siege of Warsaw Poland. Pretty exciting to see a 380mm rocket actually get used. So wide that small men can fit in its width.
This video deserves a few, choice entries from "Seventy Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries," from the Schlock Mercenary webcomic, by Howard Taylor. 😁 #6: If violence wasn’t your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it. #25: If a manufacturer's warranty covers the damage you did, you didn't do enough damage. #34: If you’re leaving scorch-marks, you need a bigger gun. #37: There is no "overkill." There is only "open fire" and "reload." #55: It's only too many weapons if they're pointing in the wrong direction.
8:35 The problem with flamethrowers is our skewed modern perception because of Hollywood. In the film industry, it's illegal to use liquid fed flamethrowers. So all the ones we see on screen and safe, gas fed versions. These pale in comparison to high pressure liquid flamethrowers in stopping power. Imagine a fire hose on full, which can knock people down and push them around like rag-dolls. It's like that, but also burning hot enough to flash-boil blood. In ww2, captured crews of Churchill Crocodile tanks were often executed on the spot.
When I think of flamers, I feel like the prometheum is just a 40k version of Greek fire. Great vid as always Wes! Also, as a budding astronomer/possibly astrophysicist, I can say you did very well at explaining a matter/antimatter annulment. 😎
Thanks for the video. I’m a cook and I routinely listen to your content while I’m in the kitchen prepping. I appreciate the distraction from the monotony.
I'm currently building a Volkite squad. Thanks for the inspiration. Was thinking about how I'd build a heavy squad and BAM!!! Here comes WesHammer with the winning inspiration!!! THANKS!!!! 👍
Amazing video keep up the good work I have learnt so much from your videos and I don't get confused at the lore any more thank you and have a wonderful day
Because the lore has never been 100% consistent if I'm being honest. And most of the artwork in my videos is fan art, So there's always a little bit of artist interpretation
Astartes often fight in situations where there's no oxygen. Presumably it has some sort of internal mechanism since it burns underwater apparently till its all used up, and the igniter is necessary for such situations. As to why they don't keep it off to conserve fuel... eh. Its hardly the biggest waste of resources they do. They probably just think it looks cool.
Keep in mind that not all space marines were the same size or strength, and their armor/ weapons would be somewhat tailored to fit them. That would help make sense of the wide array of gun size and caliber differences within the same weapon platform. For a general foot solider that is different. That would be more "one size fits all".
I like to live dangerously as plasma cannons have always been my favorite weapon on that list. Seeing a whole squad of enemies get blown up, only for your man to die next round is rollercoaster ride.
One weapon no one has mentioned is the Atomizer Cannon. A relic weapon that harkens back to the Dark Age of Technology. It resembles a bulkier version of the Multi-Melta with extensive shielding to its backpack power unit. When fired a concentrated blast of highly irradiated particles will shower and penetrate the target. Boiling it alive from the inside out and rupturing all of its cells in a gruesome violent manner. Armor provides little to no protection as the Atomizer Cannon will set it on fire before disintegrating it completely. In addition to this the land area in which the target previously occupied will blanketed in a sea of lethal radiation. The weapon is both cruel and unusual even by Imperium standards and as such many Space Marine chapters will refuse to use it due to the weapons heretical nature.
Sounds like if a microwave replaced its power cord with a miniature nuclear core. Classic 40k, sounds like the Mechanicus would love it considering one of their units utilizes nothing but rad weapons.
@@Ascension646 It's essentially a nuclear version of a heavy melta gun. So yeah I can imagine the Adeptus Mechanicus taking a fond interest in it. Also when I first read it's description in Deathwatch Rites of Battle page 137, I couldn't help but be reminded of the BFG 9000 from Doom.
@@pulserifleman4538 Warhammerized bfg9k, I can get into that. Now we just need a warhammer game that lets us use such a weapon in it's complete majesty.
Thanks for the interesting, informative video. My classmates at my high school used to call me Heavy Flamer until it pretty much became my nickname. I never understood or knew what they were referencing but, HEY, now I know it’s a badass weapon from WH40K!! Cool!!
The melta might very well be both a microwave weapon and a plasma weapon at the same time. The plasma beam could be riding on a microwave beam that keeps it nice and toasty on its way to the target. Since the plasma from a melta is not constrained my a magnetic field it would need something to keep it from instantly cooling down on contact with the atmosphere.
21:07 the emperor's dandruff missiles reminds me of the comic irredeemable. Spoilers: in some later issues like a little more than half way, in order to beat him or at least contain plutonian who is the main antagonist, a group of aliens use teleportation tech to cleave his skin cells, then 3d print the skin cells and made a straitjacket out of plutonian's skin.
Those automatic bolt machine pistols and the mobile grenade launcher attached to a terminator armor suit was my favorite go to strategy for fighting the bug boyz on Xbox. Fucking love the fact I can completely destroy half the army before it even touches me and by the time they get to me the small guns finish them off effortlessly. Having all terminators that are upgraded just rocks their world
You skimmed over the most horrible part of Phosphex. They call it "living fire" because it is attracted to movement. It's basically fire that hunts you, is hot enough to burn through most protection (including Legion Armour) and can stay inert for very long periods of time before being awakened and coming back just as hot and angry.
I have a question So as I look at space marine armour, I dont see anywhere they can hold their mags for their Boltgun so how do they even get more bullets or mags? And how did the Sister of battle or Commisar use their Boltgun?
The way they store their ammo has changed over time and differs from book to book. Most of the time extra clips are mag locked to their armor. Space Marines often will have utility belts as well, and in older lore the ammo and grenades was stored in compartments inside of the armor. That would eject whenever the space marine needed it
A lot of the sprues now have utility belts and pouches that you can add to the miniatures. As for the non-augmented humans such as guardsmen and the sororitas, they are using Ryza, Godwynn or mars pattern bolters (or patterns made on other forge worlds) theirs are smaller and have less recoil while still packing a comparable punch. Space Marines use Astartes pattern bolters which are made specially to be used in the hands of a space marine, far larger than that of those used by standard humans
I have two points. First, I am very happy with how many references to the long fangs you used. All hail the Allfather! Second, these guns use science that is so far ahead of what we can comprehend today, that there is very little that is explainable about them.
I know I'm a little bit late, but I'd love to see a follow-up about the equivalent weapons of the Chaos Space Marines. The Thousand Sons' Soulreaper Cannon has always been a personal favorite of mine; it's basically an Assault Cannon - fun fact; the 40k wiki claims that the standard Assault Cannon has a rate of fire in the hundreds of rounds *per second* - but this variety fires Inferno Bolts. What are Inferno Bolts? They are a patented Thousand Sons invention; bolt shells that are ensorcelled and infused with the raw power of the Warp. When they explode, they release a gout of literal hellfire that is hot enough to *melt ceramite.* All Thousand Sons bolt weapons use Inferno Bolts, but none are quite as terrifying as the Soulreaper Cannon. If we take the "hundreds of rounds per second" thing at face value, well... you can only imagine what one of these things would do to a squad of loyalists. And it becomes even scarier when you take into account the fact that these things are being wielded by hollow automatons unconcerned with such mortal trifles as "suppressing fire" or "flesh wounds." Good luck putting it down before it puts you down.
My take on plasma vs melta- Plasma is essentially the fourth state of matter. Anything that gets hot enough will turn into plasma. The variety of plasma used in a lot of fiction is "contained" plasma. Usually described as magnetic containment (though it's unclear how the containment functions past the end of the barrel), the plasma is a ball that fires outward. Meanwhile, flamers are technically a plasma weapon as well, in that fire is in and of itself, a form of plasma. To me, that leaves meltas as a bridge between the two. The higher intensity of a pure plasma weapon, with a dispersal pattern similar to flamer. Put another way, plasma guns shoot contained plasma, while meltas shoot uncontained plasma. The lack of containment means that the heat disperses far quicker, hence the reduced range.
You're probably the most informing 40k personality because you don't just copy and paste what the lexicanum or the 40k wiki says. You find the little intriguing points that can be missed and extrapolate new original points too which is awesome.
Thank you for your videos, Wes. I was on a machinegun team in the army back in the day so a heavy bolter is always top of the list. Oh and dont feel embarrassed. I didnt know the difference between rockets and missiles till i was in the US Army infantry back in the 2000s
50 cal range was good times. The SCO happened to walk by with a hard on while I happened to take a turn on it. I have no idea how anyone misses with the 50 or the SAW.
Something I love about heavy bolters is that it can be found very commonly outside the space marine forces, even more so than regular bolters, being a common crew-served and hull-mounted weapon in many imperial guard and planetary defense regiments. Wherever you go in the Imperium, you won't find it too hard to find heavy bolter ammo if you look hard enough. Not only that, but if you take ludonarrative harmony into account, a heavy bolter is the perfect weapon to kill all but the heaviest infantry in the galaxy.
@@CorvusCorone68 Ludonarrative harmony means that what we know of the lore matches what we experience through the gameplay. In the lore, if you hit a space marine head-on with a heavy bolter, it's likely that the marine will be killed or otherwise incapacitated. This matches the heavy bolter having a good anti-MEQ profile in the game.
I think the comparison between flamers and phosphex weaponry is the comparison between napalm and white phosphorus. Meltas I've always thought of like shaped charges, creating a molten jet of metal that outside the effective range is too cold to actually penetrate armour. Plasma weapons use magnets to make essentially balls of plasma that curl around themselves to travel through the air, which on impact release the heat and energy "trapped" inside the outer layer. I've also thought of plasma weapon overloads as the magnetic systems breaking under the strain of combat conditions, exploding as the "round" of gas in the magnetic chamber violently escapes through the weak point in the field. Personally, my favourite to field has always been the good ol' bolter. Back when I played (4th Ed) I ran a Black Legion army that generally favoured Berserkers for assault units, with heavy fire support from a Defiler or two and maybe a Predator, led by an undivided daemon prince who generally existed to wreck everyone's day but not as hard as the Bloodthirster possessed champion with an Axe of Khorne. He could tear through the most heavily armoured units without breaking a sweat, though there was nothing as sweet as running a squad of fairly cheap berserkers into a high-point cost unit of terminators and telling them their 2+ armour save was now 4+.
That particular missile could come in REALLY handy when you need to fight a Chaos Sorcerer or Lord of Change idk i would definitely want at least 1 in my chapter if i was a chapter master :D
Thanks for the content man your one of my favorite channels. Thank you for all of your hard work, I hope good things come your way because you seem like the type that has good karma my brother. Take care and keep us entertained my friend.

For your next orc physic power video consider a thought I had today if the orcs was tricked into thinking and believing the emperor was fully healed and alive again to give them a real fight would it happen?
a bolter is such a interesting weapon move all the sophistication from the weapon to the ammo because the volkite guns needed too much maintenance to be viable (forget that the imperium is using them again now they lost all their supplylines) if a volkite weapon was used as a club mid battle and broke that was a marine without a gun, but if a bolter was used as a club and something broke you reload and it will fire a giant box of sturdy metal for marines to be rough with and lots of replaceable ammo to take all the redundancy
In Eternal Crusade (another wh40k shooter pvp game, god rest it’s soul), Meltagun and Multimelta fires a beam like fire burning through tanks and melts infantry armor(absurdly high damage) also leaving a hot-fiery burning after out of contact of the beam. Plasma weapons in EC has 2 firing modes, normal shots and the regular charged explosive shots, Plasma cannon charged shot acts almost like morta shots and is used regularly in a siege gamemode because how spammable and lethal it is.
The way Bolters work, they are basically delayed detonation, rocket propelled granade launchers. If i remember correctly, Bolters were inspired by Gyro-jet pistols which rather than use a casing filled with propelling smokeless powder, each bullet instead had a few small propellers which were both increasing its speed over distance to reach terminal velocity and aiding in rotating the bullet for stability purposes.
I will always be a fan of the heavy flamer for it melts my graphics card. the assault cannon coming in with a close second because come on, you're just walking around with a GAU-8 under your arm. Though in the tabletop I am quite partial to plasma weapons instead.
I remember how effective was melta weapons in Warhammer 40k Freeblade, the light melta weapon was able to destroy light vehcles instantly and heavy thanks in no more than 3-4 seconds.

Implosion-based? That like how some rockets/missiles punch a hole in armor b4 exploding inside?
Nah its for COKE
Nah its for COKE
Krak grenades are just irl hand grenades, frag grenades are the counterpart to irl fragmentation grenades
@@jasutinborchert4418, krak grenades are equivalent of shaped charge anti-tank hand grenades, such as the Soviet RKG-3.
I will always love Jurgern’s Melta Gun. It may not be as big as a Astartes Melta gun but it’s still awesome.
Appreciate you being a straight up Chad in donating to the sea turtles brother. Finished watching the tag team with Majorkill!
Turtles won!
YEH!
Oh yeah new Wes video. I love your content man, you've really sucked me into the lore with how you present your content. The story about the sisters brought an actual tear to my eye
Now I want to see someone kitbash or model a plasma canon heavy weapons team for the imperial guard
@@weshammer
Well, 40k is made with a "rule of cool"
I know it doesn't make much sense, like how you fit 30 .75 bolts in those magazines.
And artwork, like black library, suffers of the same problem as having so many authors with different visions.
Add to that the ONLY size GW has given is about an Astartes bolter, even sisters have no official size.
And they're useless in the game.
Some say it's a cal 100. Others that it's the size of a fist. All we know is...
It will keel!
@@benoliver5593 wait I gotz a guy idea! Hav em all and have all the dakka!
Why not 2 lascannons 1 optional other weapon and the rest heavy bolters??
Damn I love every image and mention of Catachan and Deathwatch. Just the instant badassery is unparagonged
There’s also the principle of gyrojet weapons that were invented, but never used for anything serious due to their disadvantages.
Please make another obscure monsters and creatures of 40k or an animal of war hammer video I loved the first one ❤️
Can do!
@@weshammer Dinosaurs or anything on Catachan seem like a great start.
Dark Age of Technology weapons would be a such a cool video.
This video deserves a few, choice entries from "Seventy Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries," from the Schlock Mercenary webcomic, by Howard Taylor. 😁

#25: If a manufacturer's warranty covers the damage you did, you didn't do enough damage.

Youu are by far my favorite Warhammer UA-camr. I love your deep lore videos, I learn so much and enjoy watching them.
Brother bring the flamer, the Heavy Flamer.
WE BRINGERS OF DEATH
heavy weapons squad/destroyers are some of my favorite types of squads to command in dow unification mod
Greek fire is just bootleg napalm tho
Thanks for the video. I’m a cook and I routinely listen to your content while I’m in the kitchen prepping. I appreciate the distraction from the monotony.
I'm currently building a Volkite squad. Thanks for the inspiration. Was thinking about how I'd build a heavy squad and BAM!!! Here comes WesHammer with the winning inspiration!!! THANKS!!!! 👍
I love your longer videos! It feels so easy for you to slide from topic to topic, you're a beast my friend!
The video starts at 3:33
all the wepons here are amazing and terrifying at the same time but the emperors dandruff being weaponized takes the cake for me
Amazing video keep up the good work I have learnt so much from your videos and I don't get confused at the lore any more thank you and have a wonderful day
If promethium ignites on contact with oxygen why do most flamers have an igniter under the barrel
Heavy bolter is by far my favorite every faction heavy weapon. But as a Son of Vulkan it's gotta be the heavy flamer.
id like to see a space marine version of a lasgun
Fantastic lore, great dude and an excellent channel that MajorKill lore-off was the greatest
Having all terminators that are upgraded just rocks their world
Just learned of this from majorkill and your contest. Checking out your vids. Long live the emperor.
Saw the MAJORKILL colab. You killed!! Keep up the great art!! 🫡🫶
I have a question
So as I look at space marine armour, I dont see anywhere they can hold their mags for their Boltgun so how do they even get more bullets or mags?
@@ErikVonStrix3 oh ok thanks
@@weshammer Now I'm imagining clips magged all over their armor so brothers can just snag mags off each others backs.
The Answer is..... Warp Fuckery.
I can just see one of the Custodes with a little hand vacuum cleaning all the dust off of Big E now. XD
I thought that one Image in the Multi Melta Segment Was fanart but this was a Model, my god that looked amazing.
I have two points. First, I am very happy with how many references to the long fangs you used. All hail the Allfather! Second, these guns use science that is so far ahead of what we can comprehend today, that there is very little that is explainable about them.
0:23 that terminator looks like a prima ballerina. So majestic.
How do I realize only now and thanks to you how well the phrase _"deus ex machina"_ fits the 40k universe?!
It's enigmatic.. 😅😅
Congrats on the win in the trivia game man
My take on plasma vs melta- Plasma is essentially the fourth state of matter.
Just something about a Heavy Bolter looks so satisfying!
Man if only my eyes weren't dilated else I could know what I was typing and see the nice images you put in the video
Not only that, but if you take ludonarrative harmony into account, a heavy bolter is the perfect weapon to kill all but the heaviest infantry in the galaxy.
by ludonarrative harmony, are you referring to plot armor or plot weakness or something?
@@CorvusCorone68 Ludonarrative harmony means that what we know of the lore matches what we experience through the gameplay. In the lore, if you hit a space marine head-on with a heavy bolter, it's likely that the marine will be killed or otherwise incapacitated. This matches the heavy bolter having a good anti-MEQ profile in the game.
Cool video. My take on melta tech is that it works like the yamato cannon in starcraft. Its like a directional nuclear charge.
Could you do a video on the Manreaper Scythe? Big nurgle fan here
If you watch my recent video on Chaos terminators I talk about it briefly in the death shroud section.
@@weshammer thank you sir. Love your work

Playing Spacehulk: Deathwing with a heavy flamer is the best
Hey Wes, you thought about making a short on the marines malevolent? They’re a great, albeit brutal chapter.
Love the videos you do my friend, would love a lore video on the Minotaurs 👀
Great video as always Wes, though I gotta ask. WHY DOES THE IMPERIUM WEAPONIZE THE EMPEROR DANDRUFF OR HOW IT EVEN POSSIBLE!?!?
That particular missile could come in REALLY handy when you need to fight a Chaos Sorcerer or Lord of Change idk i would definitely want at least 1 in my chapter if i was a chapter master :D
Thanks for the content man your one of my favorite channels. Thank you for all of your hard work, I hope good things come your way because you seem like the type that has good karma my brother. Take care and keep us entertained my friend.

For your next orc physic power video consider a thought I had today if the orcs was tricked into thinking and believing the emperor was fully healed and alive again to give them a real fight would it happen?
a bolter is such a interesting weapon
move all the sophistication from the weapon to the ammo
because the volkite guns needed too much maintenance to be viable (forget that the imperium is using them again now they lost all their supplylines)
if a volkite weapon was used as a club mid battle and broke that was a marine without a gun, but if a bolter was used as a club and something broke
you reload and it will fire
a giant box of sturdy metal for marines to be rough with and lots of replaceable ammo to take all the redundancy
I like to imagine a war during the great crusade when vulkite weapons were a thing. Just lines of fiery blue berms melting anything it touches
Liked the collaboration with majorkill
There are guns that have used rocket propelled bullets before (The Gyrojet) and we have been using explosive small arms ammunition since WW1.
So the Mechanicus taking one out of the Ork play book? Or Tim Howard? " it just works"
Surprised you didn't include the balefire gun, those things are insane
Space marine 2 brought me back to you Wes😍
Imagine the shenanigans that would occur, if a tech priest, or tech marine finding an A10 in some museum.
I like how nearly all of the heavy weapons are either, bigger versions of the "handheld" versions, or the smaller version but ×2.
"So how do these new guns work?"
"Because I said so."- Cawl
Thx man i love your content. I really wanted to know what war hammer is. Thanks to you im having fun knowing the lore and other details.

8:53 it genuinely hadn't occurred to me that the imperium would even still have a concept like "war crime" lol
Didn't think about it till hearing someone say it out loud, but a bolter is literally just a scaled down version of our modern naval guns
Back in the day the Terminator with Missile rack system held a targeter in their left hand while wielding a bolter
