  • Can you have too many new AMGs? No, you can't. This estate-ish, low-roofer probably answers a question no one has yet asked. But it goes like a randy rabbit and looks superb.

Shooting Brakes are awesome. Especially the classic Shooting Brake converted Astons. I wish they would bring Shooting Brakes to the 'States. I don't know what it is, but having massive power with that sort of shape is just, well, awesome. Car companies: More Shooting Brakes!

This has four doors, a hood that is relatively short compared to the cabin, and the driver sits well forward of the rear axle- in my opinion it's not a shooting brake, its an estate with a cut roof line. Mercedes are just calling it a shooting brake for marketing reasons, without seeming to have any understanding of what the term means.

This car really reminds me of the Mercedes R-Class (Longversion). That car we had was not a car it should be called a sedan chair. Very jaw-dropping highspeed autobahn cruising machine. Always a headturner where it was parked and passes buy. I believe the CLS shootingbrake is very much similar to this.

In this case it simply means a car category that is non-mainstream, with little to no competition.
A car that is not one of the classic types like a 3 box design sedan or something the like.
Generally, niche has a meaning similar to gap.

No, Mercedes-Benz has not made manual V8's ever since the 300SEL 3.5, with a 4-speed floor-mounted manual transmission. There are some exceptions however, AMG/Brabus-tuned W124 and W126 coupes could be ordered with 5-speed Getrag transmissions. RennTECH also made a 6-speed manual for the 500E W124, but it was a one-off. Other than that, Mercedes-Benz has made/used weak manual boxes for a long time, so they only mate them to smaller/weaker engines. It's a shame but their automatics are not bad..

Hey Chris, good segment. I urge you to look around your side of the pond for what we here in the US call a "Maggie"... particularly the SRT8 guise. Since Chrysler didn't sell the Dodge brand over there, it would be the Chrysler 300 Estate SRT8. This LX-platform vehicle is from the Daimler-Chrysler days & should be given some homage for the Shooting Break. Then you should check out the Caddy CTS-V wagon; another car that pays homage to the "Maggie"! You'd love them all!!!

At 2:40 he makes the remark that this could be competition for the E-class Estate, I guess Mercedes Benz thought of the same here, but that could be a huge mistake.
It's interior space isn't comparable with that of an E class estate, and E Estate buyers will be dissatisfied with this car. I would personally target for people who drive a sport sedan (like the CLS) in the first place; mid thirties, no children and preferably yacht owners (because they might need the extra space)!

I think the confusion comes from the fact that most SUV's are not really SUV's anymore, even though they are marketed as such. If you can remember the Bronco, compare it to a current SUV such as the Venza, or the Compass, or the *shrug* Escalade. SUV's are (or were) meant to go where minivans or estates can't, while retaining some practicality. The examples I mentioned are merely minivans in a two-box disguise.

How long does it take to fully recharge a Tesla Roadster?
And where does the power come from? (last time I checked the answer to that one was Coal-Plants which are actually the worlds largest producer of CO2)
Sorry you may have had me had you gone with bioethanol (2nd gen which comes from straw, not that 1st gen corn starch b/s) like the Bowler Nemesis or the Koenigsegg CCXR but you just had to go down the dead-end that is battery-power.

A shooting brake is NOT just "a high end estate/station wagon", a shooting brake is a two door, two seat, wagon, or a wagon variation of a sporstscar. An argument could be made for a 2 door 4 passenger wagon, but even that is pushing it. This has 4 doors, and is just the wagon version of a sedan "4 door car", it is a normal station wagon, nothing more. An SLS AMG Wagon, now THAT would be a shooting brake.

  • @thelastdeadmouse

I don't understand why people would want a car like this anymore.
Instead you could buy a Tesla Model S Performance, save $50k up front, $3-4k every year in gas, god knows how much in maintenance cost over 5 years (AMG's aren't exactly known for being reliable or cheap to fix), be quicker, have a lower center of gravity, never go to a gas station, and even seat two more people, have more passenger space AND more cargo space than this station wagon, while driving a sedan.

Hm, as far as I can see you are testing that cars on public roads. I don't know, but I find it kinda inappropriate to drive like that on what are clearly and evidently not even empty roads, let alone private. I like your reviews, I really do, but it really don't approve such kind of driving.. Little to moderate speeding is something, but street racing and powersliding every corner when there are another cars on the road... Wouldn't commentate if that was for the first time, but it's every time.

You'll be hard pressed to find a merc with a manual other than the odd few such as the 190E's. After about 2001 I think they reduced the amount of manuals massively.
Also, they aren't designed for massive amounts of driver involvement, they're there to every now and again blast round a mountain road and do a few slides, but then they can go back to being a calm motorway cruiser.

  • @bmancodgta4
    @bmancodgta4 12 років тому

Altho I agree manual versions would be great for a lot of their cars, the problem is Mercedes doesn't do the greatest manual transmission's because well, they never make them, and although WE would love it, we're not necessarily the ones BUYing the cars. They would be wasting time and money developing manual transmissions because no one would buy it. Think about it Ferrari even stopped making manuals because only maybe 5-10% of customers were buying manual, and thats for a FERRARI, not an estate

How many cars can you perform massive sideways hooning, kill 911s with your family and luggage in the back at once?! Nothing else like this besides the E61 M5 (which by the way I would buy if I ever saw one because its close performance and much cheaper. V10 sound scares people off the sidewalks)

ps. they won't do that, cause theire engines produce to much tourge for driveable manuel anyway, at least by german standerts. the m3 e36 has no tourge at all, and uses a stronger getrag transmission then the supra jza80, to just give you an idea how german build cars ....

Okay now MB is just going after the edgy appeal of the CTS-V Wagon. I'm sorry, but the price is just not worth it. Yes you might get a vastly superior interior design and quality...yet your also paying a lot just for the name. The second GM puts their new CUE system into the CTS-V Wagon the cost of the Shooting Brake will be very hard to justify!

To be quite honest electric vehicles aren't good enough yet, and even when you can get one that will do 3-500 miles on a charge and they all do 0-60 in 4.something seconds for the majority of car people this wont be enough, noise and a spiky power-band is part of what makes a car exciting !

You see, Chris Harris knows cars, and he likes AMGs. AMGs are so great, I think, by now, it's a fact that they are better than M. What does M have? The M3 and The M5. What does AMG have? SLS, C63 black, the 65 models, and an 63 AMG variant of just about every Benz model.

...well have fun with that in 10 years when its fallen apart. my dad has owned a caddy from the 70's, 80's, and 90's. They have all fallen apart mechanically and cosmetically and none of them ever rode as good as my 85 Mercedes turbo.

the cls shooting brake is the new "eierlegende wollmilchsau" (german expression for a solution trying to include everything) you can drive up businesslike, you have space for bag and baggage and race track performance all in one.

Great Show... thumbs always up to Chris Harris... I think only people that like the panamera or understand appeal of these big fast cars are going to like this car.. I think its great but you should drive a CTS-V Wagon for fun...

definitely looks better than a Porsche Panamera and the Ugly Ferrari FF. It'd be a three way tie for me between the CLS Shooting break Panamera and CTS-V wagon. but drop the word "Hennessey" in the mix than I've made my decision lol.

Nah, 200 and 240 CDI is enough for people who want the luxury but don't really care about überpunch. Don't underestimate 200hp even in a big car like this, the Germans are known to deliver good punch from the smallest of engines :)

hell why wait. Sack the lot of them and let him run it. Given the salaries of the current team mean we only seem to get six episodes each year now nothing it would represent a good use of our licence money as well.

Nah, then we are going to be missing out on this kind of stuff. Top Gear doesn't drive enough in their show. Way too much boring "comedy" stuff.
Chris Harris should do what he does best, bringing us the worlds best car show.

For humanity sake, Mercedes, please don't ruin CLS class with ugly station wagon. Please please please... just NO! CLS is the sexiest car out there, if Shooting Brake is released, I'll never be able to look at CLS the same way.

DSG is by far not as strong as an automatic.
The automatic is also a bit more refined to work with. A double clutch needs a reset for the ecu every 15.000 kms. It's just not as good as people say in my opinion!

I do agree I'd love more cars to be manual, but personally a big barge like this I wouldn't mind being an auto, just as long as I also had a proper sports car with a knob in the middle. Unfortunately manuals are dying.

I think they should copy top gear a bit and take Matt Farrah to a track and have a famous racing driver try and slash his laptimes. I say this as it looked like he had a lot of fun in the Turner Motorsport vid.

Mercedes and manual gearbox's is not a very good combination. And, many people actually use these cars to go to work, or shopping, and truth be told a automatic/robotized gearbox can be as good as a manual gearbox

Drift folk may not appreciate it but if the CLS Shooting Brake was to be a seriously practical car it would come with four wheel drive. RWD is still a pain in a snowy winter, no matter how much electronic assist it gets.

I would like to see this car compared head to head with Panamera Turbo or maybe with Panamera S.

The RS5 is basically just an RS4 Coupe.
So the RS5 compares perfectly with the M3 Coupe.
And if it were my choice I'd take the one that also works in snowy winters(i.e. I'd have the Audi).
