@Steve Sherman You'll find that Mac power users are more adept at the command line and keyboard than windows users. You HAVE to know what you're doing on a Mac as in order to get proficient you'll spend more time in the command line. I'm proficient in Windows and Mac and I can tell you that for the regular consumer for both machines is about the same intelligence level... but on a Mac you'll often need to know your way around the command line. In Windows you can just click around preferences until you find what you're looking for.
Steve Sherman people like what the like. Why is that so hard for you to understand. Does an person using a Mac affect you personally? If not, why are you so pressed about it?
@Steve Sherman My sincere apologies for my part in your terrible emotional suffering. Should Apple users be required to pay reparations to Windows users? Might as well complain about how the existence of Whole Foods drives up costs by normalizing organic food production. The fact is, some people just like a straight forward interface that isn't going to get completely overhauled with an unstable and unrecognizable replacement every random integer between 2-5 years.
@Steve Sherman Whole Foods existed for almost 4 decades before being bought out by Amazon. I guess they were pure for 37 years, and are now completely evil. But you do forget, Microsoft got saved from being a totalitarian monopoly only because the Department of Justice stepped in and told them they had to fall back. That, and their product was getting so terrible at that point (well, after) people started looking for better options. Apple, as you correctly point out, is too small of a player to have that level of market control. Beyond that it's just "influence", but not truly monopoly except over those who prefer them (in the same way that Ford has a monopoly on people who will only drive Ford trucks).
Snazzy, you are the only youtuber out there that gives actual tips & tricks. Loved all of those videos. The hot corners tip just blew me away. Here are some of my tips from over the years: - in every file select prompt, press cmd + D to go to your Desktop. Easy for quickly navigating to that single-purpose screenshot you just made. - in Terminal, enter defaults write com.apple.dock mineffect -string suck to activate the "Suck" minimize effect. - in the Dock preferences, set "Prefer tabs when opening documents" to "Always". Work those tabs! - Spotlight sucks. Download Alfred. Set cmd+space as your Alfred shortcut. Forget about Spotlight forever. - Go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Keyboard and set a shortcut for "Move focus to the menu bar" (i like to use cmd + alt + space). This will allow you to navigate the menu bar with keystrokes, which is wayyyy faster than moving your mouse over there and going over all the menu items. Also, makes you look like a magician. - Speaking of menus, toggling alt with a menu open will show you alt-ernative shortcuts. - in Finder, when in List View, press cmd+J. This will allow you to make the icons in your list bigger, which I find to be more orderly. - you probably knew you can alt-click the green button on any window. Works on the new drop-down menu as well. Full screen sucks, we all know it. - cmd + Tab for the app switcher. Press Q while still holding down cmd to quit the selected app. Quickly quit apps you dont need. That's all I can think of right now.
YourMJK yeah I worked this out when gen 2 Spotlight first hit the Mac back in Leopard. I think first gen Spotlight in Tiger was totally different as it had its own window view separate from the Finder. But yeah it’s pretty obvious... Return to open the file and just Command + Return to show in Finder.
2:01 - In regards to window management: you can also hold down the Option key while hovering over the maximize button. That reveals options that allow you to snap a window to the left or the right without it switching to the iPadOS-esque full screen mode. I much prefer this over the very stiff feeling iPadOS method. Might be a Catalina thing. I don’t know.
Quin please don't stop making these videos. I like to think myself as a power user and these tips; 40% of them I didn't know before. Spotlight to browse, merge all windows to tabs, stationary pad, move files holding command, DOCK toggle, command click app on dock to browse install location. These are pretty cool.
2:30 If you hold option you also get the option to resize the window to half the screen instead of it being a pseudo fullscreen type thing. I'm real glad mac finally has this natively but it would be a lot better if it were a lot easier to access like how windows does it.
The switching between windows within same application tip is a life-saver! It drove me crazy even after years of using macOS after switching from Windows and Linux that the Dock doesn't show all the windows I opened. Thank you sooooo much for this!
6:48 Snazzy, on Windows you can just CTRL C the file and in the Choose File window (or Open window) you just CTRL V and in the File Name section the full path to the file you copied will be there.

I copy browser links a thousand times per day. That Command+L tip saved my life! Also, it was one of the old Mac Tips videos that brought me to your channel, about 2 years ago. Love those vids!
I've known about the Save/Open Dialogue box trick and I tell people all the time is it THE key functionality that I choose Mac over PC for my daily driver. I love everything else about Macs too but that one feature saves me the most amount of time, at least from what I perceive. I love it and thank you for pointing it out, Snazzy!
# well tbh i miss having quick access to the file path in finder maybe it’s just because i’ve used windows most of my life but there really should be a file path up there...
Great tips, Quinn, Thank you. One thing: Re what you say @ 9:35, I always use command-backspace whenever I need to send files to the trash. Isn't it command-option-backspace to get the warning dialog and option to immediately delete? Also, when you are command-tabbing to switch between apps, changing to command-tilde, without releasing the command key, reverses the direction.
I think you could do them over and over again. They are super useful, and not all of them are easily remembered, esp. because not all of them might have immediate usecases. With youtube not suggesting old videos all that often, having a mac tip video recommended to you every now and again would be very useful. And may be even fewer tips in one video. Thank you for them.
Omg I’ve cursed apple so many times for not just showing the location of the file in spotlight...why don’t they just show it without a secret function like having to press command??!! 🤨 Thanks for the tip!! My quality of life just improved significantly!
- cmd-enter works in spotlight too for opening in finder! - you can drag files into the "choose files" button in all browsers on both macOS and windows!
If you're like most Mac users you simply invoke the screensaver by moving the cursor to the hot corner, thereby locking the Mac with a flick of the wrist.
The Spotlight path and browser URL key combos are pure gold! Both will be seriously useful for me, and I had no idea they existed. Thanks for more awesome tips!
Started soft with the first two then went hard. Haha. The file drag for the path is so genius one of my favorite. If you click a volume on / desktop finder it'll open a new window. If you command-double click another it'll open the volume in a new tab so no new window.
Glad to see you highlight the "stationary pad" feature! The recording services department at my college uses that for Pro Tools so that we can create a whole new file faster than using a template. It's super helpful!
My internal monologue still says "Apple-Shift-3" and "Apple-Shift-4" etc, for screen shots, because in the olden days my keyboard had what I thought a of as "an apple key", a key not present on other systems. Occasionally I say to somebody "press Apple Shift 3 ...." And they don't know what I mean...
6:40 What you can do on Windows is copy the path from the address bar of the File explorer, then paste it into the "File name" field at the bottom of the file chooser dialog. This will navigate you to that path. You can also hold down Shift while right-clicking on a file, select Copy as path, then paste that into the chooser dialog and press Enter - it will choose the file you specified as a path. In programs like Microsoft Office, you can also paste an internet URL into the file chooser dialog for a picture and it will paste the picture into the document. During this video, I noticed that macOS has lots of additional little details that are very handy for superusers, especially the one where you can hold down a modifier key for the hot corners, whereas Windows either has some relics from the past or simply nothing (modern apps don't really have any tricks aside from being able to full screen any of them with a keyboard shortcut).
I usually watch these tips & tricks videos and already know most if not all of them... More than half of these I did not know. Thanks for being a wizard.

I thought this was going to be a video of the same old tricks everyone uses.
6:55 - With Windows 10, it is possible to do the drag and drop method on the upload window, just not with icons. In the window where you have your file, select it, go to the top-left of the ribbon where it says "Copy Path" --> go to the upload window's "File Name" field --> paste the path --> "Open". I hope this helps.
Quinn, you make my mac life that much better every time you release one of these. I don't know what I'd do without my (virtually) instant dock hide/unhide and now you solved one of my long standing annoyances with Spotlight-being able to FIND the file, not just open it! Thanks man!
I know almost all of these tricks (except for two) and they are certainly the reason I use a Mac. Great that you're making a video about it. It makes life easier 👍. I didn't know about stationary files btw... Pretty handy!
Useful tips, thanks! Just need to mention that in Windows, you can copy a folders path from the address bar, and then paste it to the address bar of the Open File Dialog.
Great!!! Never knew how to delete a file avoiding Trashcan for years, after switching from Windows! And how to find a path via spotlight!!! So happy! Thank you 🙏🏻
Excellent video. Been using a mac now for some years, and even now at work! But don't know half the 'time saving' stuff you pointed out on this video. I need to watch again as half went in one ear and out the other.
Hey, great tips. I'm a Windows guy but I use Macs regularly. Little great Windows thing, if you drag a file with the right button, when dropping the file it will ask you what you want do with it: create shortcut, move or copy.
I seriously doubt this will be your last in this series Quinn. You make great tip videos and there'll be more tips you'll find and share with us. Thank you sir.
PS you can also do that option trick for BlueTooth. It will show you more options. It also shows more options under the volume button, you can switch output source. ALso CMD lets you drag around those icons in the topbar
Thanks so much! I've recently ventured into MacOS via a 2019 Macbook Pro 13" from a Dell XPS 13", I love the fresh look and how snappy things operate and seamlessly with my iOS devices as well. However, there's these little learning curves I'm currently struggling with and your video has solved a bunch of them. Thanks!
I've been a long time mac user and this is the first time I've heard about dragging a window with cmd-click. Absolute life changer, thanks for that one! btw: when uploading a file via a browser you can also simply drag the file to the "Choose File" button, instead of clicking the button and going through the choose file dialog.
I'm not sure if you've shown it in another video but if you press and hold on the green gem you can drag the window to either side of the desktop to snap it to that side just like in Windows.
9:48 You can also just... drag the Applications folder to your dock next to Downloads? Then you have access to all apps (right click menus and all) without opening a window. You can also set the display method depending on the number of apps (list, grid etc.).
- Cmd+L will become handy; - Cmd+` , Man… FINALLY a real window switcher on macOS; - Stationery pad: Never knew what it is about and now I know; - Drag file to 'Choose from file...': I always use that and it's really awesome; - Cut and paste, I use XtraFinder to gain this functionality using Cmd+X, among many other features; - Option+Cmd+Backspace] No more using the trash (useless for myself); - Good to see you using MacUpdater, such an amazing utility. The guy who gave you this tip is really nice 😄 - I always used Ctrl+Shift+Eject for locking + turning off my screen but learning Ctrl+Cmd+Q… 🤯 - And the correct Dock is in bottom AND always visible! Period! 😌 Awesome tips, as always, Master Quinn! For the next one, do a video about utility apps (1st and 3rd-party ones): OnyX, TinkerTool, hidden tricks in Disk Utility, Network Utility, Wireless Diagnostics and so on...
9:35 I do this all the time but the result you got, really surprised me. I've never had it work like that. When I command backspace (delete key) I never get a dialog and it goes to the trash. It doesn't delete it from the trash. I've never seen it work like you show it.
Hover over the window zoom button to snap left or right but hold the options key will get the same but not full screen ipad mode. Also double click title bar to extend window top to bottom.
7:28 drag file to destination folder, easier than cntrl+x, it moves the file from original location to the new one if both the folders are in same drive and it copies if both the folders are in two different drives on windows...
Shift - Option Arrow Keys for selecting text word by word used in tandem with Command A and Command Arrow keys is how power users edit text. There are lots more short cuts for text editing but thats the best goto one I use the most
It's actually amazing how many head scratching features, or lack there of, windows and MacOS both have, its like they got together and divided up useful features as to not make either operating system too good
7:10 yeah, Windows doesn't paste the path correctly, that's true. But it's also not necessary since you can just drag and drop an image in the search bar anyway if you have it open. Works with google images, twitter, facebook, most sites that enable image uploading of sorts.
The shortcut for Delete Immediately is Command *and* Option and backspace (labelled on Mac keyboards as Delete). Command-backspace as you narrate is the regular Move-To-Trash
Mac has so many hidden features that sometimes I click on something while my hand is unintentionally pressing one of the modifier keys, it just does something that saves time when learnt.
The copy, cut, paste shortcuts in mac are not stupider for me. I find it more useful that we can chose to paste as a copy or move the file while pasting it, instead of deciding what to do while copying. It is pretty handy, for me.
Trick is when go into the file menu always press alt to see other options available. This also works for context menus. If you for instance right click a file and choose copy but press alt/option. You then copy its path instead of the file itself. Very handy!

I feel like a superhero with all this knowledge and power
Useful tips, thanks!
Just need to mention that in Windows, you can copy a folders path from the address bar, and then paste it to the address bar of the Open File Dialog.
I'm considering myself a power used but I still learn new things every time you make a video like this. Thanks man!
Mac user since 1984 and I rarely learn something new, but once again, you taught me two new things. Thanks.
Cheers!!
Great Tips! Please don't stop with the Mac Tip series.
On a non-US layout I had to rebind the key above the tab, but then it works. This is a game changer.
keep these mac tips and mac apps coming they are so clutch
I'm not sure if you've shown it in another video but if you press and hold on the green gem you can drag the window to either side of the desktop to snap it to that side just like in Windows.
Around 6:40, in windows you can use DirectFolders, it does the same thing as Default Folder X
Thanks for the video. I learned quite a few new tricks. Your video was perfectly executed. Just the right pace, excellent content and length.
I've been using a Mac for years and there was basically ONE thing in this video I knew. Thank you! Excellent stuff!
9:48 You can also just... drag the Applications folder to your dock next to Downloads? Then you have access to all apps (right click menus and all) without opening a window. You can also set the display method depending on the number of apps (list, grid etc.).
Quinn, I’ll buy you a burrito to continue these Mac tip videos. They are super helpful!
- Cmd+L will become handy;
- Cmd+` , Man… FINALLY a real window switcher on macOS;
- Stationery pad: Never knew what it is about and now I know;
- Drag file to 'Choose from file...': I always use that and it's really awesome;
- Cut and paste, I use XtraFinder to gain this functionality using Cmd+X, among many other features;
- Option+Cmd+Backspace] No more using the trash (useless for myself);
- Good to see you using MacUpdater, such an amazing utility. The guy who gave you this tip is really nice 😄
- I always used Ctrl+Shift+Eject for locking + turning off my screen but learning Ctrl+Cmd+Q… 🤯
- And the correct Dock is in bottom AND always visible! Period! 😌
Awesome tips, as always, Master Quinn! For the next one, do a video about utility apps (1st and 3rd-party ones): OnyX, TinkerTool, hidden tricks in Disk Utility, Network Utility, Wireless Diagnostics and so on...
Good ideas! Thanks!!
You can use control and shift too with the hot corners! Great video!
I find myself wanting podcasts from my fave youtubers more and more these days. Cant always glue my eyes to a screen during the day
Cheers! Hope you like mine. 😃
Omg- this really helped me. Especially the command and r key with spotlight
I've only seen the first tip and this video is already worth a thumbs up!
Wow! One of the best Mac Tips I've seen around UA-cam. Thanks for sharing, brother!
Just the first spotlight trick is worth the watch! Thanks dude.
Definitely going to use the merge all windows tip as well as the path shortcut for spotlight
I'm gonna miss these...
As soon as I go through all of them and develop muscle memory for everything I use. Thanks man, adding years to my life!
Very handy!
out of all mac tips videos that you made this was by far the most useful one, thank you :)
Thanks for control-command-Q. Always loved Windows-L and wanted same on Mac, and now, 9 years later, I know what it is!
Loving your videos, I've watched like five tonight. Awesome stuff.
I love that Mabel's 'High Expectations' is in your recently played. We love a king with eclectic taste 🙌🏼
I like your videos. Very informative, simple and straight forward. Keep up the good work. 👍
These are some of my favourite videos! I genuinely see myself using some of these tips as part of my everyday! Thanks!
