Though a product of its time, "Cobra" is still a great action flick. It definitely embraced all the fun with 80s action films. Best line in the film is Cobra's reply when the grocery store killer says he'll blow the place up: "Go ahead, I don't shop here anyway".
I only saw this movie a couple years ago and I thought parts of the movie were missing because of how badly it jumped around. I think an extended cut would make this an action classic
They have kind of the extended cut online. Someone found all the deleted scenes, extras off tv showings and put them together. You'll know when you found it when part of the scenes are clearly VHS quality. It's way way gorey.
@@thrillkill01 Warner Bros. ordered the cuts because they wanted more shows per day of *Cobra* to compete with *Top Gun* which opened a week earlier. This, of course, was before multiplexing. Bad decision though
what's great about Cobra is the car chase .... especially when he jumps through barriers from the top of the car park ... it really doesn't suspend my disbelief
I saw Cobra in the theater twice, and it was violent enough for me. I was really surprised Andy Robinson wasn't one of the night slashers after seeing guys in suits during the synchronized clanging. I don't think I even noticed the changing road conditions. Three things in this movie stuck out for me: the rooftop meeting where Art LaFleur tells Cobretti "Do what you do best"; the crooked cop's reaction to the motorist's question as to whether she was drunk; and Robinson's reaction to the carnage at the end ("I would have used less... extreme methods.")
There was a practice range directly across from the basement lunch room and Vice Squad offices in a precinct a friend worked at long ago. The armory as well. This is STILL one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Another I believe that came off a bit restrained for what they were after. It needed more T&A, guts on the ground, something... still love it. And that '1911' he is carrying is a honey. I am not a fanboy but I always fancied it.
been watching this movie since it came out on video. That cutting the pizza with scissors scene is my favorite. it is ICONIC. there's even a gif of it floating around
Brian Thompson has always been one of my favourite "actor with a particular face" ever. He's been criminally under employed. His depiction of the nightslasher is really awesome when you think about it, he looks always on the edge, definitely psycho and has a threatening voice.
The author of Hokuto no Ken (the fist of the North star) manga said numerous times Cobra is one of the inspirations for Kenshiro, the main character. This and mad max among other things. And Bruce Lee. I mean, imagine a mix of cobra and Bruce Lee fighting in mad max's future and you have a basic synopsis of the series. And it is as awesome as it sounds

Like, that final scare moment that's part of so many horror movies but then "Girls just wanna have fun" starts playing "unironically". I just love those moments. Wish actors like him showed up in more films (as opposed to Stallone).
Those stats were worse than, Mega City One crime, in Stallone's Judge Dredd. I love when Olmos tells him he's gonna blow the place up, and Cobretti says, "Go ahead, I don't shop here." 😜
"Cobra" is like the no name brand name beer you buy when "Commando" is not available; you will still get drunk, but have a worse hangover for drinking it (watching it). Cheers to Cobra! Classic!!
While watching the movie on VHS back in the day, my wife and I counted Stallone’s kills during the finale. It was kind of.....over the top, see what I did there?
When it comes to John Wayne's real name, I always remember this exchange of Hank Hill and a character, whose name I can't remember so I will call him "O.G. for other guy O.G.: "John Wayne's real name was Marion." Hank Hill: "You take that back!"

The only thing I remember about this movie is Cobra cutting cold pizza with scissors and eating it. Out of all the funny and random things in the film, this was something I haven't seen before (or after).

Great review of awesome and all time action cult classic! I used to only like Cobra because i considered it to be a very good action movie but over time i grew to like it more and more and became huge fan of it. I hate when people are putting it down. So what if it has some minor issues (mainly the very obvious choppy editing in places), it is still a kickass and extremely fun. I really think that action sequences are some of the best of the 80's, and great cinematography is one big reason why i think it stands out from many other action films of same time. People give credit to Jack Cardiff for the work he did on Stallone's previous hit Rambo 2 but i think that Ric Waite did a much better job with cinematography on Cobra. Some of the visuals are surpringly good for movie like this one. I think you're right, there was originally much better film which unfortunately Warner Brothers didn't care for and sadly, neither did Stallone. I am a fan of him but some of the stuff he did in the past and present with re-editing films like this and Nighthawks because of his ego really pisses me off, specially when he claims he tried to make his films better but in the end he only helped ruin them. Warner Bros, and many other studios like Miramax and Universal, are infamous for tempering with their films by taking them from directors and re-cutting them. Over the years i did lot of research about WB films and i quickly noticed large amount of reports and official info about their habit of doing exactly that. I recommend reading about some other films which they took away and re-edited to find out more. Here are some examples; Hard To Kill and Out For Justice were originally lot longer and with more plot parts, Demolition Man was originally over two hours long and had more action scenes, released version of Tango & Cash is actually a "butcher's cut" of the film put together by two different editors as a result of constant re-editing of combined footage filmed and re-shot by 4 different directors over 4 months of filming, Showdown In Little Tokyo was infamously re-edited from original 100-some minutes long running time down to 79 minutes, Deadly Friend (which came out the same year as Cobra) was also re-cut and very badly edited with re-shot scenes resulting in another choppy film... Btw, i have a video on my channel that has some deleted scenes from Cobra so check it out if you want to. 7:02 Entire car chase was originally much longer, which explains all the continuity mistakes in theatrical version, including that huge fuck up. Slasher and other guy originally crashed first and jumped out of the car right before Cobra crashed into it. If you notice, when he exists the car after the crash Cobra is looking at completely opposite side from the one where editing makes it look like Slasher's car went.
I had a feeling you were gonna talk about this one and you did it well. This was the first Stallone film I watched and it's always been a personal favorite of Stallone's films for me.
Brian Thompson has been killed by two of the biggest action stars of the 1980s: Stallone and Schwarzenegger; he was one of the punks that got killed in the opening scene of The Terminator.
They have kind of the extended cut online. Someone found all the deleted scenes, extras off tv showings and put them together. You'll know when you found it when part of the scenes are clearly VHS quality. It's way way gorey.
Brian Thompson has also done some voice acting work for cartoons. He voiced the main villain Dreadwing in Dragon Flyz and he is AWESOME! Luckily the show is on UA-cam and I highly recommend it.
Saw this movie not more than a month ago, and I remember seeing this movie when i was a kid, and I remember it was way more violent, So I called up my mom, and asked her what the deal was, and she said that the one that I saw, was a "VHS cut" of the movie that had a lot of the violence from the X-rated version, and a longer runtime, than the 90 (or so) minutes than this version... I have to visit her to see if she stiol has that VHS tape, so I can rip it, and watch it again in it's "intended" form :D
jimmi der I had that same version of the movie myself when i was younger. I still remember some uncut scenes like hook being stabbed into Nightslasher's back and lot more bullet hits during the final shootout. I have also been looking for that version quite a few years now, so good luck to us both then in finding it.
jimmi der If it is an X-Rated version that you have with a longer running time, then PLEASE rip it and so forth. I would beg for a copy, pay money for a copy, or whatever. I'm a huge fan of Cobra (one of my favorite films) and am dying to see that.
George's son Panos is the writer and director of Beyond the Black Rainbow, inspired by George's death and funded with Tombstone residuals, and Mandy about his mother. Just an amazing duology.
He wears sunglasses all through the movie, including at night and indoors - except at the end when they ride away on the bike - in the sun.
Character development.
It’s total shite 😂😂

So underrated that today he goes virtually unnoticed .
Those glasses go great with Stallone’s facial structure.
Stallone has those deep eye sockets so yeah it works well
Sledgehammer! What a great show that was.
"Trust me, I know what I'm doing"

If not for Stallone's massive ego, this could have been a gritty actionfest.
This movie was scary as hell when I was a kid.
Pitch black sequel rules. You keep what you kill. I'm taking the bike
They have kind of the extended cut online. Someone found all the deleted scenes, extras off tv showings and put them together. You'll know when you found it when part of the scenes are clearly VHS quality.
It's way way gorey.
Nobody named, "Cobra," ever turns out to be a, "nice guy," lol. 🤣
Brian Thompson has also done some voice acting work for cartoons. He voiced the main villain Dreadwing in Dragon Flyz and he is AWESOME! Luckily the show is on UA-cam and I highly recommend it.
David Rasche _gets sleaze-slashed in_ Cobra
_gets revenge mocking Stallone in_ Sledge Hammer
Thank you... At least I am not the only one who rermembers the wierd shit ;)
Yeah... good luck bro :D
jimmi der If it is an X-Rated version that you have with a longer running time, then PLEASE rip it and so forth. I would beg for a copy, pay money for a copy, or whatever. I'm a huge fan of Cobra (one of my favorite films) and am dying to see that.
Come to think about it I might have the VHS of Cobra myself. I have to look now.
It's been 3 years man, please tell us if it's the X-rated version or not.
Fucking love cobra it's essential 80s action for me. Stallone got everything right in terms of making a "Hollywood Cop". I wish we got Cobra 2!!!
Night slasher gang doing their axerobics!.. lol that was perfect man..
George's son Panos is the writer and director of Beyond the Black Rainbow, inspired by George's death and funded with Tombstone residuals, and Mandy about his mother. Just an amazing duology.
