As well as the nostalgic joy of (SPOILER ALERT!) that catchy "Nestle Alpine White" commercial jingle at 5:12, which I recall someone aptly describing it as "a Calvin Klein ad for candy bars set to the best single Roxette never recorded."

I loved this movie so much when I was a kid. This, the Dark Crystal, Legend, Labyrinth, The Never Ending Story, and the cartoon version of Lord of the Rings (both of them) all cemented my love of fantasy. But Krull was the one I watched to death.

I used to love this movie when I was a kid (still do) and now as an adult I understand that a big part of that was because of it's beautiful sets and costume design, as well as for some solid cinematic and good acting (Freddie Jones and David Battley in particular). It's unusual and bizarre and I love it all the more for it.

FINALLY someone gives a halfway decent review of KRULL! I loved this film as a child and still love it, flaws and all. I don't think it's nearly as "bad" as some reviewers make it out to be. All of the points you make in your video are spot on. You also have a very good grasp of movie dynamics which most hipster-critics don't. Bravo!

I always liked the story of the cyclops.. he knew his fate lied with the band of heroes and knew how he was to die, is why he hung around them it was his destiny to die helping them. Yet when it came to fulfilling his destiny and accepting his death that was foreseen, he told Colwin that his time to die had come but it was elsewhere and tried to escape it only to come back and help them get into the castle and get crushed to death. In a way, the beast deal with the cyclops helped to seal his own fate by allowing the cyclops' to see into the future even if it was only seeing their deaths..

One of my favorite films from the 80's. I don't know why some people say this is a bad film even watching it now I still enjoy it.... great characters, acting, story, music and villains. Just some of the special effects that are dated I see as a negative. I think a film like this would be perfect to remake or maybe a distant sequel.

Great review of an heralded flick. Krull is truly one of a kind..At first I didn't really care for it..but as the years went by and I saw it on cable more often, I fell in love with it. The SFX are fantastic for 1983 standards, and the score by James Horner is a pleasure to the ears. You can hear a little of Star Trek II in there though..And the Glaive is one of the most bad ass weapons in movie history. If they were to do a remake, Keep the story as is, make the slayers more bad ass... and keep the Glaive until the later part of the film so that they don't end up wasting the best weapon for most of the movie!!!
Yes it has its tropes, but dear god what movie doesn't... When people moan about the predictable plot it annoys me as almost every movie is predictable now... Every Genre has been done to death!!! Its not about what tropes are used but how effectively you use them...
For its time, KRULL was a good film, sadly the tropes were not utilised very well but it is no worse than many others that came out at the time that fared far better!!! To name a few that get more praise than they deserve, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Death Wish, ANY Dirty Harry Movie...
All these films are hailed as Classics, yet all had ONE idea they used OVER and OVER and OVER AGAIN! No one complains about these trope fests... Even though the same tropes are in all the flaming remakes as well!!!

I love this film. One of my favourites from Childhood. What other film do you get that has a pre-kick ass Liam Neeson, An early comedy Robbie Coltraine and Todd Carty from Eastenders. The widow of the web is a great sequence and the Glave is a great weapon.
I knew Lysette Anthony's voice was dubbed but I had no idea it was Lindsey Crause who did it lol
I like your idea for the sequel

i watched this while growing up before cable, it was on FOX, i found it quite awesome, i also wished they used the glaive more, but ehh i'll live with how much they used it, they still made it look like an OP weapon.
i liked how you thought up the sequel in the way you did, would've been good if done right, oh well...

Did you happen to watch the review all the way through? I was poking fun at the movie but I genuinely love it. Towards the end of this (and all my videos) I talked about how hard it was to get this made and all the effort that went into it.

I reckon Krull is part of the Star-Wars universe, the Beast being some minor Sith wannabe warlord who got a rep in a backwards part of the galaxy by hitting a few lost colonies. Colwyn and Lissa use leftover slayer tech to make contact with the wider galaxy and later on, send their beloved -and gifted- little boy Palpatine for an off-world education...

You know, your suggestions for how to handle a sequel for Krull are pretty spot-on, and not at all farfetched. They did it with Tron: Legacy, after all.
Maybe we should get a kickstarter going for that.

I saw this in a theatre when it first came out and loved it so much that I went right back and watched it again the next evening, something I almost never do, and despite the fact that I don't even like this genre of film. Later that year, Siskel & Ebert panned it as one of the worst five pictures of the year because (get this) they couldn't get past the name Krull, not knowing what Krull was. Like, DU-UH, the film makers flat out tell you right at the beginning of the movie...but nooo, that was their "big complaint" about it. Anyway, I had the chance to watch it again last year and yes, it still holds up for me. Enchanting in every way

One of the absolute best fantasy B movies out there. I have loved it since I was kid. The sound track by James Horner is one of his early works and for heroic fantasy movies is glorious and the reason I am a Horner fan to this day. It's really doesn't have any sci-fi in it at all. All of the Beast's and Slayer's abilities even traveling between worlds can be explained by magic alone. The Slayer's weapons are one shot only weapons. If you look at them the part that become the bolt of energy is a physical and after being fired the Slayer's turn the weapon over and its a kind of half pike for hand to hand. I have always felt that after they would go back to some supply place and set an new rod of death into the handle to have an new shot. The only other thing I love about the movie is the on location shoot, the places they picked to film the traveling and wilderness scenes were stunning. All and all a great movie, I will always love it.
