2001 Saturn SC2 Fuel Filter Change

  • Katrina, my 2001 Saturn SC2, is having some problems lately. She's been running rough and losing power. I decided to try some routine fixes first- adding gas dryer to the gas, giving her a tune up, etc. Unfortunately, none of that had any effect. I decided that since I've never changed the fuel filter in the 10 years that I've owned her, I'd try that next. So here is the process of changing the fuel filter in a 2001 Saturn S-series vehicle.
    I'd like to add a shout out to Richpin on UA-cam. He's got a great video about this process which you can see at this link:
    • Fuel Filter Replacement
    And just in case you're wondering, no- changing the fuel filter didn't fix the rough running issues. :(

    There was a lot of good information: the bolts are 10mm and you will need a box wrench to remove them and if you do not have two picks, then to short push pins will work to remove the plastic brackets. Also being at the age I am at, it is good to take pictures of how it comes apart. Thank for the video 👍

    This, EGR, and plugs are happening on my 98 SW1 this weekend. She lugs a bit at low RPM if I upshift a bit early. ECTS, clutch hydraulics, thermostat and rad just got done. Then I get to swap the doors and interior from my SW2 I got (bought the two as a pair). I’d fix that one but it has frame damage.
    SW1 has 225k miles and is an absolute rattle trap but is great otherwise

      Wow! Good job! My poor Saturn didn't make it to 200k. CLOSE, but not quite there. Once the engine went, I considered doing a swap, but I decided to take the opportunity to try something I'd been wanting to do for a while, so I bought a totalled 2014 Dodge Charger off an auction site and rebuilt it. It's a little sad though. I loved my little Saturn. She was a great car!

      @@ClayCarlino dude thank you so much for the response!!! After all of the work she still hesitates a bit so I’m going to guess fuel filter, if not I have a bit more to diagnose. EGR was FILLED with carbon, the pintle wouldn’t even open. Plugs were fouled too, but the car burns oil so that was expected.
      How’s the dodge treating you? Super cool that you took on the challenge!

      @@ThatOddGarage Saturn's are notorious for burning oil. Mine burned about half a quart per tank of gas. It might not be a bad idea to do a compression test. The last repair I did on mine was changing the fuel filter. Then after that didn't solve my problems I did a compression test and found my 4th cylinder was bad.
      As for the Charger, it's been GREAT! It's the car I wanted without having to have a car payment. It hasn't given me any trouble (knock on wood) so far either, although I do need new tires. It was kind of scary, and more than a few of my friends and neighbors thought I was crazy when they first saw the car, but there is nothing like the feeling of pulling it out of the garage the first time under it's own power!
      Thanks again for your comments! I hope your car has a long and happy life!

    MUCH easier than the gen 2s, which is kinda buried under the battery. I myself don't even think to remove the bolts as, like you saw, they have a habit of breaking. Could argue that makes it more difficult, but you only need the case tabs barely apart to pop the filter out.

    I just my filter, always had hard starts had put my foot on gas pedal while starting it.
    I changed the starter, spark plugs wires all throttle body sensors.
    Still had starting issues just changed my filter problem went away started up without issues.
    There's has few minor issues.
    Next replacement is coolant sensor and coil packs and either changing ground plate for coil packs or cleaning it.
    Have you changed these or your car is gone.

    • @ClayCarlino
      @ClayCarlino  3 роки тому +1

      Well the car is gone now, but back when I had it, I changed the coil packs, spark plug wires, and spark plugs at different times. Spark plugs usually once a year. Wires twice during the 11 years that I owned the car. Coil packs on 2 occasions as well which really made a big difference at the time. I never changed my throttle body, but I did give it a good thorough cleaning about once every year or so. I loved that car. By the time the engine went it had well over 180,000 original miles on it! It was a trooper of a car, and honestly, if it hadn't have been too small to fit comfortably fit my adult friends in the back seat, I probably would have done an engine swap rather than get rid of it. Still, I did let it go, and instead rebuilt a totalled 2014 Dodge Charger instead. Good luck with your Saturn! I'm always glad to hear that other people are keeping them going! • @ClayCarlino
      @ClayCarlino  2 роки тому +1

      The sc1 has a single overhead cam engine. The sc2 has the dual overhead cam. The Saturn in my videos was an sc2 so it had the dual overhead cam. If your engine looks like mine then you've got an sc2. Unfortunately, I don't think this particular video shows the engine much, but I've got plenty of others. Also a google image search could probably show you what each engine looks like.

    would this be the same process for the 2000 SC1? I got an extremely high estimate from a mechanic who mentioned something about the relay? I can do it myself if it's the same

    • @ClayCarlino
      @ClayCarlino  2 роки тому

      I'm not sure if the 2000 and the 2001 are the same or not. Best way to know for sure is crawl under on the driver's side and look. As for the relay, he was probably talking about pulling out the relay for the fuel pump then cranking the engine until it dies. You want to do that before disconnecting any fuel lines to purge the lines of gas and ensure they are no longer pressurized.
      Whatever the case, even if there are minor differences between the 2000 and the 2001, The process should be pretty similar.
      I hope that helps! Good luck. I really hope you try it out. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting!

      @@ClayCarlino thanks for the quick response. I took the car in to have it inspected last February and wanted to do an oil change and change the fuel filter. The guy gave me an estimate of over $300 to do the fuel filter and I thought he said it had something to do with the relay that made it so expensive, like maybe something was really difficult to reach. Maybe I heard him wrong...but I can't find anything that makes this fuel filter any different than the other Saturns around that time. I'm 66 now and always did my own oil changes, tune-ups, filter changes, etc. But my back won't allow that stuff anymore. the easy way leave the black plastic casing in take end clips out slide old one out slide in the new filter never use a 10mm socket again ?

    • @ClayCarlino
      @ClayCarlino  4 роки тому +1

      You COULD try just leaving the plastic casing in place, but my experience has been that whenever I try to take a shortcut to avoid taking out a couple screws or a part that's in the way, I end up having to work a lot harder and waste more time on the overall job. In this case, the 10mm bolts aren't hard to reach. The easiest way is to remove them. As you can see, if they break off, it doesn't even matter. All the brake lines and stuff do a good job of supporting the filter anyway.
      So yeah. That's my recommendation. If you try it your way and it works for you, that awesome! BONUS!

      @@ClayCarlino The Wix or Saturn branded fuel filters were preferred when they were still available, because this unit has the fuel pressure regulator built into it. That is why these filters are so expensive. They have a scheduled replacement life of 100K miles.
      The best you can get now is the Baldwin BF9851 or Hastings GF380. Amazon and Rockauto sell these. The Baldwin I recently purchased was made in Taiwan. I suspect that the Hastings is the same item. IIUC, Baldwin owns Hastings.

      @ClayCarlino  4 роки тому +2

      So to answer your earlier question, I did NOT disconnect the battery. Obviously you have to have the battery hooked up when you crank the engine to evacuate the fuel lines, but I can see the logic in disconnecting it afterwards just as an extra layer of safety. That being said, I didn't. There's no electrical stuff around the fuel filter, so I didn't feel the need, but on hindsight, it probably would not have been a bad idea to do so.
      As for my tune up, I replaced the spark plugs and put in a new air filter and changed the oil.
