  • Learn Why and How to clean your Fuel Filler Door Seal and Filler Neck of your Capless Filler Neck equipped car or light truck. The Ford Motor Company has been using a Capless Filler Neck for a few years now. If you have vehicle with the Capless Filler Neck you need to periodically clean the Door Seal and the Filler Neck to both prevent dirt from entering the Fuel Tank and to ensure both sealing surfaces are clean. Cleaning the sealing surfaces will also ensure your vehicle does not have an EGR or other fault in the future. This is easy to do, but is more involved than wiping down the outside of the Filler Neck. I perform my cleaning on a 2013 Ford Mustang GT, but this also works on many, many cars and light trucks.

    Just a quick note about the video - -
    You have to open the Flapper Valve (the little automatic door) and clean the mating surface. This video shows you how.
    Cleaning the outside is good, but the point of this video is to clean that inside valve that make a vacuum seal to prevent OBDII fault codes! I hope this is helpful - Stiles

      @@donbratton Hey dip, he specifically told you why. The car's computer checks the pressure there. An imbalance can throw the system out of whack. Do you understand that we aren't looking at a horse's rear end and instead an orifice of a machine that needs more than hay to run properly?
      To your question of WHY - the car will check vacuum there. If the vacuum is not correct it will not pass tests. If it doesn't pass tests then in many locations you can't get your car registered. If you can't get it registered, then you can't get it insured. If you can't get it insured, then you can't drive it on the road.
      An easy way to avoid all these problems is to CLEAN THE FLAP, tardo.

    I was having trouble with the gas pump shutting off after getting less than a gallon of gas into the tank. Tried cleaning up the filler neck like you suggested but without using Armor All or WD40. I just used a damp ramp and wiped it all down. Then I used a small amount of oil and rubbed it around just inside the flapper. Seems to work. Now I don't have to stand at the gas pump and continuously pull the lever like an animal.

      Mars, Yes, True, other Sprays may be better for this application, however, I replied to someone else with this, which I still stand by . . . .
      . . . , although WD-40 is not the best lubricant for plastic, it is a good lubricant, and I use it for its cleaning properties on plastic all of the time. The WD-40 website states, "It is 50-state VOC compliant and safe to use on metal, rubber and plastic parts....And it’s safe for use on a variety of surfaces; including rubber, plastic, vinyl, and metal" WD-40 is a petroleum based lubricant and will not affect most general use plastics such as PVC , PP, HDPE or ABS. Avoid using a petroleum-based products like WD-40 Multi-Use on polycarbonate and clear polystyrene plastic.
      Lubricants with silicone or PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) are best for use on plastic surfaces.

      @@ericcraig3809 What? To fuel the car at the Gas Station Pump, the Pump Nozzle is the correct size to open the Flapper Valve. To add Gas from a Fuel Can, you need to use the correct Fuel Can designed with the right nozzle (none of mine are) or you have to use the OEM Fuel Filler Funnel. You may need to ask the question again. - Stiles

      Huilin lI, Don't say never, although WD-40 is not the best lubricant for plastic, it is a good lubricant, and I use it for its cleaning properties on plastic all of the time.

      David, I normally reply to your type of comment within 24 hours, but I wanted to research this more. You need to find someway to seal the Fuel Filler opening, this will ensure if the fault goes away, that this is your problem. I thought that the Locking Capless Filler Neck Cap may be the solution, but I don't think this provides a seal. You may be able to use one and add an O-Ring to it. John, Don't get me started on Fuel Cans, I have a couple of older ones that work just fine. They pour fast with very little spillage. The trick is to get Gas from the new cans into the older ones. I spill a lot, so most of the time I just deal with the new cans. My Cub Cadet Lawn Tractor has a big 4 inch opening and I can just take the Spout off of the newer Cans and pour directly into the tank. But generally, I spill several Teaspoons of Gas to protect the world from a little Gasoline Vapor. The Capless Filler Neck I do like, I have a Shop Tip Video that talks about removing worthless steps from tasks (see link below), but I wish the Filler Neck was designed better, to not get dirty (the point of this video) and to seal for the life of the car/truck. • @StilesAutomotive
      @StilesAutomotive  2 роки тому +2

      Put, I'm not sure there is a question here! I normally address comments with valid questions. 1) Part of the point of the video, is this design will likely cause many problems as the car ages, 2) to replace the Flapper Valve you would replace the Filler Neck Assembly, cost for the part is likely greater than $200 and then add labor, 3) Dangerous? Unlikely, the Door Seal and Flapper Valve would likely cause an EGR related fault, indicated by the Check Engine Light, long before this would leak that must Fuel Vapors. This is not my design, it is used on many, many modern vehicles, yes I was critical of the design in my video, however, I would not replace it. If I were adding or modifying a Fuel Tank under a Pickup Truck Bed, I would probably select a Filler Neck with a Cap.
