- The video explains how to reset check engine light, and how replacing my gas cap with a Stant gas cap solved the problem when the yellow check engine light stayed on and I was unable to clear check engine light.
This car is a 2014 GMC Terrain.

@colegreen1291 Auto Zone does free diagnostic testing on 1996 and newer. (Double check on year) just in case you ever need that.

This happened to my 2009 Subaru twice already and I have had it for a little over 1 year now; and it runs pretty well too at 178,000 miles or so. When this happened, I unscrewed and screwed it back on, and restarted the car twice and it never came back on again. The only other times this dreaded light came on while driving was once due to a spark plug issue and then another time because my E-brake needed fixing. Otherwise, it has been smooth sailing and 2 out of the 4 times, it had to do with my gas cap. Now I make sure that I hear it click 3-4 times and not loose whatsoever before taking off after pumping gas. lol. Very good video by the way.

You just saved me today from spending much on diagnostics. It was not working at first but had to make sure the new cap is sealed tight (till I heard that clicking sound), did the reset, and boom. Never move your gas cap while the engine is on else it will trigger the check engine light on the dashboard.

Are you driving a 2013 chevy Cruze? Because I am. I got the evap code and everytime I fuel up. My car shakes and seems to stall for a bit. Then it will rev down for a bit.
Been driving for a good 25 years. Never had a gas cap go bad on me. Other day engine light came on. Hooked my reader up and said small leak. Stopped at the gas station on my way to work and noticed my gas cap felt loose with no resistance at all (I remembered what it felt like before). Ordered a new cap from amazon and cleared the code. Problem solved.

My mechanic friend told me to replace my gas cap because my check engine light kept coding for EVAP and then turning off for a while before turning on again. Annoying. So I'm watching this video to see if my symptoms fit yours, and yeah, the only difference is that my check engine light doesn't turn on immediately after refilling, only after maybe a half mile away from the gas station.
The same here shit. My engine light code P2402 EVAPORATED. I went to buy the NEW GAP GA FROM AUTOZONE. NOW MY ENGINE LIGHT IS OFF. THANKS GOD😂
This happened to me with my 2014 gmc denali. Except afterwards my oil levels dropped and it said engine power reduced , turn off engine and started beeping. I made it to an oil change place..even tho i just paid 2 mths ago for a full service oil change. The attendant tells me theres oil and no oil leak. I made it home and my husband looks at it and he also said theres full oil and no leaks. He reset the button. My oil level went back to normal too. Is this anything to do with the gas vapors and air getting into my motor over time bf i got the new cap? Bc its running fine now.

me too..just solved my TRC off light signal with replacing my petrol cap..my car cannot go higher than 1500 rpm when pressing maximum to the accelerator. First, I thought the gearbox torque pin was broken. I sent it for auto transmission checking; it was not faulty.

I have a 2019 Nissan Murano I replaced the gas cap the light is still on I will try what you suggested. I sure hope it works I need to pass inspection 😢

Replaced my gas filler cap about 4 months ago after the engine management light came on amber.
Same thing happened two weeks ago. Fearing the worst checked the gas filler cap which was screwed up very tight.
Removed the cap & screwed back in until I heard two clicks.
Problem solved.
Appears that a gas cap that is also screwed on too tight with very limited free movement could also trigger the engine management light to show amber as well.

This happened to my Toyota prius 2015 twice. I brought it to the Toyota service and they charged me $120 to diagnose & enter the code to turn off that light. They told me my gas tank cap wasn't closed tight and caused it, and I guarantee that I closed it very tight until I hear many clicks, not sure why 🤔😒
Well, if it happens again you might just try replacing the gas cap on your own. It might be the necessary cheap solution.

I like the reasoning, methodical! But what about vehicles without a gas cap? My truck just has a gas flap/door.
My Terrain is a 2014 model which is built to California emissions standards, the strictest in the country. Consequently there are quite a lot of interconnected sensors that control the OBDC and affect its reporting. Not every make nor model country or world wide will necessarily act like a California emissions vehicle. But the atmosphere around the world would be so much cleaner if all vehicles were built to this standard.
Does a lose gas cap can make the car run differently or unresponsive?
An improper seal mean fuel and recirculation system pressure are incorrect. So yes, depending on your vehicle type, performance can definitely be affected.

I had engine light come on a few times in the past and it was code P0202, so they fitted a new fuel injector. It was fine for a while, but same code came up today. It came on when i'd filled up with fuel, so i'm wondering if it's the fuel cap.
Replacing the cap is an inexpensive thing to try.
Does the three times turning to ACC works on every make? My one is vw jetta 2017 and I failed to reset check-engine light this way. Any suggestions?

The 3 times ACC doesn't work on my Audi TT also. CEL is on with no error codes, I've had plenty errors before and did the repairs, mainly sensors, but I am changing my gas cap and resetting the CEL with my VAG tool.@@ItsFixable
From what I could see on the video it looked like your cap was ok, but it looked like you had some crude on the filler neck lip (goes to gasoline tank). So maybe that was the issue, and you did not need a new gas cap after all. The check engine light you mentioned could go off simply by fiddling with the gas cap and temporarily making a better seal, and could reoccur if the crude on the filler neck lip is really the thing causing a bad seal. Suggest you clean the filler neck lip, etc. Further, you have the most reactive check engine light I have ever heard of. Usually check engine lights take awhile to react to a gas cap issue (a day?) and takes awhile to clear when the problem is solved (another day?).
I fiddled with that old cap any number of ways and was unable to solve the problem; light remained even after the reset procedure. As you saw, as soon as I installed the new one, the light extinguished. Yeah, it's the first car I've owned where the light responds so quickly. I like that :) The error code remains in memory though. I did the jumper trick to check the flashing sequence.
@@ItsFixable You might still consider cleaning the filler neck and flange where it contacts the gas cap seal even if your check engine light has gone away, as a preventative measure if nothing else.

Not sure. You cannot start the car. He turned on the accessories three times then started/turned on the car.

Past few months I was getting intermittent ECL, scanned as P0456 very small evap leak, replace gas cap. So I bought the auto zone suitable replacement (duralast) and it didn’t fix the problem. I checked the entire evap system it all looked good. So I thought before getting a smoke check I would try a different gas cap.. Amazon China special.. it worked no more ECL.
I took apart the original cap to see why it failed… it was the vent valve.

I have a 2013 Chevy Equinox. My check engine light can on and stays on. I had a new exhausted system put on, a new converter put in and the check engine light continues to stay on. It is getting very costly and the garage can not inspect my vehicle because of the light. What are they not checking or doing to get the light to stay off and get my vehicle inspected? I was stopped by a cop due to the inspection. Please help!
Has the mechanic checked for the error code (or codes) using an OBDII scanner? Those codes should tell what engine system is causing the fault. Then the mechanic needs to follow industry standard troubleshooting to narrow it to the specific component problem. If he (they) have done all that work without scanning for the code(s), take it to a new mechanic!

a $20 scanner will read the code & verify the gas cap is likely the problem, large leak.

I bought a new gas cap and problem solved......until a few days ago. Maybe the cap wasn't high quality?
Maybe a vacuum leak somewhere else in the system. Suggest checking the OBDC code and go from there.

Well, if you've changed the cap and the light came back, it's likely a different issue. You need to check the OBDC code to identify the problem. You need someone with a code scanner; or learn how to hotwire (jumpper) to have the check light flash the code.
How would you know if the valve in the gas cap is bad

I have a duralast gas cap I does not indicate how many clicks. I don't want to overnighter it
With any brand, if it doesn't seal after one or two clicks it should to be replaced.
My car got to where it wouldn't have power taking off. My son put new calls. New spark plugs when it was done. It still wouldn't go off and stay off. It would say numberof jet stopped. Got back under the hood and found out. It was just the number 5 that popped off. He had to put it back on top of the spark plug and that solved my problem. But not really because I need a new gas lead won't stay tight and you don't drive it for a little while and it's loose. So they just fall open and I don't know how it does ithanks for the info it let me know. I need a new gas cap because the light came back on after everything was correct. Drove like a brand new one and then I drive it again and the stupid lot comes back o

I will try it. Auto Zone code came up gas cap. Bought one today, light still on. Man said it does not go out immediately to run the car 50 mins. I’m retired and do not drive mush. Lol
With the price of gas now, its a good thing you don't need to drive much.
Buy an OBDII and erase the code yourself , they’re cheap
