    Looks good!
I rarely pull the driveshaft from the trans. I just move it to the side and bungee or zip tie it to the leaf spring frame etc. I also wrap the universal with two turns of electrical tape to keep the caps from falling off.

Thanks for the video! $10 in parts and about 40 minutes to replace the seal on my 90 Suburban. The shop wanted $150. I didn't pull the shaft out. I just tied it up out of the way. Also used a bit paint to mark the pinion instead of scoring with a chisel. Good stuff. Thanks!

I know this is a old video, but there seemed to be a lot of questions regarding why he marked the nut, so incase someone stumbles upon this. When the pinion and ring gear are assembled, there is a crush washer inside of the differential the sits between the back if the pinion(that you cant see) and the bearing. This washer is crushed during assembly to a very specific tolerance, and that sets the lash between the two gears. If you were to just crank the nut down on the yoke, it will crush that washer further pulling the gear lash out of spec. This is the best way for a do it yourselfer to get it back close to what it was.

Pinion depth is established with the pinion shims all the crush sleeve does is set the bearing preload.

If you, or any viewers were wondering I fixed my problem with the proper seal, i did exactly as you showed in the video except i tied the drive shaft up with some speaker wire. the chatter which I was experiencing was the pinion nut being loose in the rear end, i tightened it as hard as I could with my own two hands and put some locltite on it. shouldn't be coming off anytime soon the noise was eliminated and no more leak!

GREAT VIDEO - THANKS!! Never changed one of these seals (50 years working on cars).. now know the nut needs to be in same position. Done many rear transmission seals, which I'll do when I have the drive shaft out. I see you have what looks like an aftermarket differential fill plug installed... mine's rusted in/stripped, so that'll be the biggest task with this. Will pull the cover and clean it out... curious what the diff fluid looks like after 210K miles - am sure it's never been serviced.

@dkhill27 If you have a service or a Chiltons manual it should show you install everything back together to it's proper specs. The way that we show in the video is the easier way to do it, however one of the repair manuals should have an illistration for you as to how it all fits together, and proper torque specs. Hope this helps you out.

@jahanzebakhter1 The mark is so you can tighten the bolt back up exactly as you took it apart. This insures that you keep the proper pressure on the bearings and the proper clearances between the gears. If you do not do it this way you could wear out your differential prematurely. An alternative would be to use plasti-gauge and re align the entire assembly.

Many times guys think the pinion seal is leaking but it's actually leaking past the pinion shaft and the yoke. It leaks through the spline, you see how easily the yoke came off. I suggest you clean up both parts ( the yoke and pinion) and apply a good sealer to the pinion and yoke splines before assembly.

useful video for something I thought I had to do. My 91 s10 pinion seal was dry. gear oil is leaking out from around the front of the yoke where the washer and nut go???? No one can seem to figure out why so if a new yoke doesnt fix it im going to just get an 8.5 from a 2nd gen s10 and put that in there... stronger and hopefully no leaks...

@jahanzebakhter1 The issue is that there is a crush sleeve on the pinion. If you overtighten it it will pull the pinion out of alignment with the gear, and there is no going back without replacing the sleeve.
There is a very small window that you have to stay in. So when you re-install you want it to be exactly where it was, and then just a touch more.
You can do this by measuring torque before taking it apart, or by marking the position of the nut.

I bought a new yoke that comes with the new seal and washer my question is do I just make sure there's no play and connect the Driveline I feel like having the bolt be marked and the yolk be marked kind of useless I'm working on a 98 GMC K 1500 5.0 automatic four-wheel drive

You need to measure the rotating torque with an inch-pound torque wrench PRIOR to removing the old yoke and nut.

I have a low squeaking sound coming from the rear axle when the JEEP 2005 Cherokee is ONLY in Drive. It usually goes away when the vehicle is heated up or has been on the road for 20 minutes. This has been happening now for 1 month. What could this be as it only happens when the vehicle is in DRIVE.

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota 4x4 and when I accelerate a little bit faster than normal it makes kind of a squeaking noise coming from the rear end. Just wondering if you may think its the pinion seal? It doesn't do it when I accelerate at lower speeds, just when I accelerate a little bit harder.

It could be brake related or possibly a u-joint making some noise. You may want to take a look at them. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

@nico27004 Yeah, use what it says in the manual. Ask at the place you're going to get it at, if you cannot find it.
