At 6 foot 3, 195 pounds. Would this bike be to small for me in your opinion? You mentioned you felt cramped. What modifications could I possibly do to help make the bike more comfortable? Thanks
At your height you will feel cramped, it’s not necessarily uncomfortable, but seat to pegs is closer than a DRZ 400. I would search for a seat with higher foam than factory. I did a higher seat on my CRF 250L when I owned it, it made a big difference.
Hey I have a question about the ignition switch. Its orange and its behind the number plate. My broke on my 2020 KLX300R and I've hardly used the bike. I saw a few people online with the same issue. My question: Have you heard anything about these being a bad batch of parts? Have they fixed the part? Do you recomend any other aftermarket substitutions? At this point I'm not sure I trust Kawaski OEM, which should be the best. Thanks a lot, Gene
Hi KC, Is your KLX300 the dual sport? Where are the rear view mirrors? Anyway, I was curious if you can easily hit 70mph on your bike? I struggle to hit that speed and I'm 5'10", 200lbs. I've watched other videos on the KLX300 where they say they can easily hit 70mph. Do you know how to check the engine size from the engine serial number? Thanks, - Sam
Yes it is DS, I have folding Double Take mirror. With stock gearing I can do 70 easy. On the head of the motor just under exhaust exit, it will be stamped 292 if it is a “300”.
The KLX300 will hit 70 but there a few things to keep in mind. 1) It takes a while, not terribly long but a while. 2) It goes along better if you tuck over the tank 3) The speedometer runs a little fast. About 5-6 MPH in my experience so 70 is probably really 64-65. 4) Changing the gearing will affect top speed and how long it takes to get there; also changes the RPM range and fuel consumption. And lastly, 5) if you put in rim locks, the wheels better be balanced good or the front wheel will oscillate like crazy and you won’t go over 55 anyway out of fear of death!
Hey KC, I have another question for you. Behind the clutch there is a little pin that comes out of the box the clutch cable goes through. What is the purpose of that little black pin? Also, what does the cable adjuster screw do? I know if you turn it one way, it makes the clutch flush with the black mount. And if you turn it the other way, it separates from the black mount. But how does that affect how the clutch works? By the way, every time you squeeze the clutch, the clutch lever presses on that pin. Thanks... -Sam
hey whats up///I just bought a 2022 model///Question= what size alan wrench does the spark arrestor and seat removal take to get off///and one more question///what kind of wrench would you need to get out the spark plug
I’m sure you’ve had to answer this at nauseam . Are all the green plastics you substituted factory Kawasaki? The green looks like a perfect match . Sweet looking ride !
How much additional $ did the dealer charge you on top of the list price? I don't mean tax and tags b/c that varies from state to state. I mean, what did they charge you for "dealer prep", "destination charge", "admin fee", whatever they tack on? I ask b/c I'm trying to get an idea if I go to a dealer, what is a reasonable amount to pay for all that stuff on top of the price of the bike vs. what is a rip off.
I was $5800 + $348 tax + $150 tag/document fee. $6298 total, even that is too much , I bought a lot of atv/bikes/SxS’s From 2000 up to COVID, I never paid over mfg. retail price out the door, until the klx. No dealer should charge freight & set up! There are dealers in my area that advertise “no freight & set up charges” if 1 dealer can do it, so can the rest! COVID just scrambled everything! So I’d say $5800 to $6500 OTD is fair. Getting above that, dealer is starting to put it in your back side! With limited stock they got ya.
I don’t have the link off hand , but I have a video up that does a direct comparison. The DRZ has much more low end torque & better power for light adventure riding. The klx is lighter & more nimble for technical stuff. If you think you’ll be doing more light adventure stuff go DRZ, if not I’d lean toward klx. It’s a very fun bike to ride, plus EFI is nice!
Noticeably more power than the CRF, more power & torque down low than the WR250R. DRZ still has much more torque all around than the 300. I change oil in all bikes once a year. Air filter I clean after every dusty ride, I only replace if filter begins to deteriorate or tears or separates at seams.
The overall power is very close, the KLX has an edge. The KLX has more power down low , the WR has better power in higher RPM. The KLX is heavier, but to me it feels more nimble off road. The suspension on the WR is better, but only slightly. The klx has a slimmer profile. I had my WR 3yrs. & I’m at a year on the 300. I still prefer the KLX especially off road. Thanks for watching!
I'm really enjoying your content, KC! I was glad to hear of your broad experience with all the dual sports you've owned. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts as to how the KLX300 compares to the XT250? I'm tempted to go with the XT because it's air cooled, but your videos are making me second guess my choice.
I had a carbureted 2009 XT, it was jetted with FMF powercore. The XT power was right in line with the CRF 250l. The suspension was terrible, at that time they had no available upgrades, now procycle.us has a few reasonably priced suspension upgrade options. For me at 5’10” the peg to seat area is very cramped on the XT. It’s was a great bike, I never had any issues with it & I did enjoy it a lot. That being said, it is no match for the KLX. The advantages of XT are lower seat height & air cooled simplicity (no rad or water pump to worry about). It is a lighter bike to handle off road. The XT will easily go anywhere the KLX will go, but the klx will do it better & be more fun if you want to ride fast off road. Thank for watching!
I have a question on the gearbox of the KLX versus a CRF 300. Some have mentioned that the CRF gearbox ratios may be a little better thought out, especially between first and second. Any thoughts? Also I've heard reports of the KLX plastics being more brittle than MX type plastic and prone to cracking. Has that been an issue? Is the CRF any different?
I have ridden a CRF 300 yet , but they do say it has a little more down low grunt, but the KLX has a little more mid. I went down 1 tooth on front sprocket, it lugs fine on tight trails & still cruise at 70. There is definitely no truth to the brittle plastic IMO, they are as good as Acerbis, polisport & UFO.
I bought a new WR250R back in 08, unfortunately sold it a few years later, but I was surprised to hear you say the 300 KLX was your favorite, meaning beating out your WR. Is it as fast as the WR? Suspension as capable as a WR? Just wondering how the 2 compare. One more thing, does that silencer, slip on, whatever give you a big enough gain you can feel it seat of the pants? I like a quiet bike, but if it makes a difference?
WR suspension has more adjustability, that being said the klx suspension performance is very close to the WR. The 300 has slightly more power overall. The WR built power in higher revs, the klx has more bottom end right off idle. The klx is slimmer & feels more nimble off road. Road manners are very similar. The slip in provides a slight power increase overall, I put the stock pipe back on occasionally, when I need to be stealthy & power is still good. I have a lot of time on the bike know & I still love it!
From my experience, the WR250 suspension is slightly better. I still prefer my KLX because of power delivery. It has power in the mid-range. WR250 was like riding a mini sportbike. It's good for a road but offroad a KLX is better.
Thanks guys. I can definitely see that. I had an 08 WR250r and like stated, you had to rev it to the moon! Then I’d jump on my 700 Raptor, click it up to 3rd and trail ride all day, still on the pilot jet lol
Hey KC, Got another question for you. Did you make any adjustments to the gear shifter or rear suspension? I'm 5'10" and my toes touch the ground when I'm sitting on my bike. So when I'm riding around with my feet on the pegs, my thigh is parallel to the ground and my knees are almost at right angles. This makes it impossible for me to use my dirt bike boots because I can't get my boot under the shifter. Do you ride with dirt bike boots? Did you have to make any adjustments? I tried rotating the shifter clockwise but then I had to lift my leg to upshift. Appreciate any tips. Thanks, -Sam
I do ride with boots, size 11. On that bike I use my O’Neal Sierra boots which are well broken in, I stand 90% when off road, which makes it a little easier to shift. I have Gearne boots for strict off road, which would probably make it tougher to shift, since they are stiffer at the ankle. I haven’t moved the shifter. I did turn the pre load rings a few turns to stiffen rear up a little. I adjusted rear brake lever up a little so I didn’t have to press a far when standing,. You may want to try an aftermarket shifter, they usually have a more comfortable bend.
My horn stopped working do you know is it fused or do I need to open it up and check the switch. I have side bags on and dont want to deal with them unless its fused, Thanks
I’m not sure if it has a separate fuse, you can remove seat & pull each fuse to check if blown, that being said, I’ve had horns on dual sports go bad for no apparent reason. Switch my be faulty.
@@kyledufresne6861 I'm 5 foot 8 inches 145lbs. I ride the klx300 no problem whatsoever. I also own a tenere 700. You have to worry less about getting your feet down, and more about keeping your feet OFF the ground. It's really not an issue for me at all. Just keep the bike moving through the uneven technical terrain. And be mindful of where you stop the bike, avoid low spots where it will cause issues getting your feet down.
Curious, what should the spark plug look like if the bike is running correctly? I just put a Delkevic exhaust on last night and noticed that my O2 sensor was black running the stock exhaust for 450 mi. Sounds like that could be a fuel pump or filter on the fuel pump.
Reminds me of my old modded kdx 220. Will she wheelie on throttle in first or second?
Add a little clutch it’ll come up, no clutch in first could b possible. I’m not a big wheelie freak! 👍
Looking to upgrade my KLX300 Dual Sport exhaust, but I’m not sure what length of exhaust to get. Does the exhaust length make a difference on the sound or performance? Any help is appreciated.
The short Delkevic pipes e are definitely louder than the 14”.
@@kcoutside7143 thank you, I was thinking a seat modification would surely be needed.
What are those green things on the wheels I would like to get a bike like yours
Hey I have a question about the ignition switch. Its orange and its behind the number plate. My broke on my 2020 KLX300R and I've hardly used the bike. I saw a few people online with the same issue. My question: Have you heard anything about these being a bad batch of parts? Have they fixed the part? Do you recomend any other aftermarket substitutions? At this point I'm not sure I trust Kawaski OEM, which should be the best. Thanks a lot, Gene
I have seen this issue pop up on Facebook threads, it seems like everyone just replaces with OEM Kawi. I’m not very familiar with the R model.
Hi KC,
Is your KLX300 the dual sport? Where are the rear view mirrors?
Anyway, I was curious if you can easily hit 70mph on your bike? I struggle to hit that speed and I'm 5'10", 200lbs. I've watched other videos on the KLX300 where they say they can easily hit 70mph. Do you know how to check the engine size from the engine serial number?
Thanks,
- Sam
Yes it is DS, I have folding Double Take mirror. With stock gearing I can do 70 easy. On the head of the motor just under exhaust exit, it will be stamped 292 if it is a “300”.
@@vidthusiast yes , that’s it , 292 is the actual cc. It’s not a full 300cc motor.
Thanks for the help, KC. I guess my engine is a 292CC.
@@vidthusiast I’m a 200lbs. Guy, my bike gets to 70 & cruises, that being said it takes its time getting to 70mph. It’s not quick by any means👍.
The KLX300 will hit 70 but there a few things to keep in mind.
1) It takes a while, not terribly long but a while.
2) It goes along better if you tuck over the tank
3) The speedometer runs a little fast.
Hey KC,
I have another question for you.
Thanks...
-Sam
Nevermind...I know what it is. It's the clutch switch. Funny...I broke the plunger and it still seems to be working the same.
Oh...can you tell me about the cable adjuster?
hey whats up///I just bought a 2022 model///Question= what size alan wrench does the spark arrestor and seat removal take to get off///and one more question///what kind of wrench would you need to get out the spark plug
5mm Alan on bottom of exhaust is only a drain bolt, can’t remove spark arrestor. Seat 8mm socket. Plug is 16mm plug socket.
I’m sure you’ve had to answer this at nauseam . Are all the green plastics you substituted factory Kawasaki? The green looks like a perfect match . Sweet looking ride !
Front fender is Acerbis
Rear fender is Maier
Shrouds are factory Kawasaki
Thanks for watching! Thanks for the comment!
I'm going to pick between klx & drz help me choose
I don’t have the link off hand , but I have a video up that does a direct comparison. The DRZ has much more low end torque & better power for light adventure riding. The klx is lighter & more nimble for technical stuff. If you think you’ll be doing more light adventure stuff go DRZ, if not I’d lean toward klx. It’s a very fun bike to ride, plus EFI is nice!
How does the power of the Klx300 compare to the other bikes you have had, how often do you clean your air filter and change your oil.
Thanks
Ross
Noticeably more power than the CRF, more power & torque down low than the WR250R. DRZ still has much more torque all around than the 300. I change oil in all bikes once a year. Air filter I clean after every dusty ride, I only replace if filter begins to deteriorate or tears or separates at seams.
Can you comment on how the klx compares to the yamaha wr, particularly how the power delivery compares. Thanks
What rear fender is that? Don’t really like the 2 piece rear fender on these.
Maierusa.com 2006 klx300r rear MX style fender. I believe I do have a vid posted pertaining to it.
Hey KC,
Got another question for you.
Thanks,
-Sam
I do ride with boots, size 11. On that bike I use my O’Neal Sierra boots which are well broken in, I stand 90% when off road, which makes it a little easier to shift. I have Gearne boots for strict off road, which would probably make it tougher to shift, since they are stiffer at the ankle. I haven’t moved the shifter. I did turn the pre load rings a few turns to stiffen rear up a little. I adjusted rear brake lever up a little so I didn’t have to press a far when standing,. You may want to try an aftermarket shifter, they usually have a more comfortable bend.
An aftermarket shifter, huh? Ok...thanks.
@@vidthusiast I had a KLR 650 a couple years back, I had trouble with boots, the moose/msr brand was longer & worked much better.
How tall are you
5’10”
@@kcoutside7143 bike is way to big for my Im 5.9 I’m just gona upgrade my pit bike even more why not right
@@kyledufresne6861 I'm 5 foot 8 inches 145lbs.
I would rather ovoid getting a fuel controller if the bike doesn't run lean with the new exhaust. I have not opened up the air box yet with the KDX snorkel.
I also have the snorkel , I’ve had my o2 sensor out several times with stock & Delkevic pipe, it always has a black coating on it,, my plug check video should show the plug, it should be on Instagram also @kcoutside.pa
So no chance for me with my 6’3 and 240 and 34 inside….😭 so which bike for me ?

HELLO, WATCH YOUR IMS TANK INSTALL, OVER THE TIME YOU HAVE HAD TANK, OIL RING, NO LEAK?, THANKS, DAN.
No leaks, everything is doing well.
Long time moto/enduro rider here, plastic tank (get rid of the metal they rust). Prices on parts is doubling/tripling. I wish Yamaha would build a 'WR300' or something, I doubt it with the 'regime' in control - be lucky have parts and fuel.
